Him wanting his friends to live a long life was a wish. Him wanting to save Paradis was his GOAL and his MISSION. There is a difference. His friends were necessary sacrifices to attain his goal and his peoples freedom
And the only reason he'd even have to kill them was because THEY CHOOSE to fight him had they stayed on the island none of that would happen.

I just feel like its such a waste of potential to just have them all killed over something like that. Moreover, if he wants his friends to survive, nothing stops eren from showing his friends the future in paths.
The whole point of that train scene where Eren says he wants his friends to live long lives was supposed to be ironic. He wants to save his friends but he cannot and he is forced to kill them or see them die AND that's what would have made the OG intended ending cruelly ironic and tragic. Had his friends died it would make that train scene hit home and be so impactful.
I was thinking about something like this yesterday. This is facts!
I feel like there would be some sort of crazy foreshadowing where out of all his friends, only armin would survive. Since in the train scene, he's the only one standing outside of the carriage that everyone else is sitting in. Also it wouldn't make sense for armin to die since he got sent to paths when that pig titan ate him. Why would he get sent to paths and not just die there and then?

I will admit I liked how Mikasa was portrayed in initial chapters, she would call out Eren on his bullshit and even got some compelling back story but after that we get nothing interesting from her. She barely even has anything to say. I wish we had gotten more of her pov, I wish isayama wrote about her motivations, dreams and wishes that weren't tied around Eren such as what it was like to be Ackerman and Hizuru, her relationship with other scouts/trainees, her overarching goals etc. There was so much potential with her character. The ova gave her so much more depth than isayama could.

People say how in AnR ending Eren kills his friends and apparently that goes against his character lmao. How Eren killing his friends goes against his character? He literally said "if someone tries to take away my freedom, I won't hesitate to take theirs." He never said "but if they are my friends, I might hesitate." He's just doing what needs to be done, he already said sacrifices are necessary, and if his friends try to stop him, what other option does he have? To sit back and give up and embrace death? Isn't that what actually goes against his character? Cuz that's something only Zeke or Reiner would do. Eren? Never.

Some people say we, ending haters, should just stop dealing with their stupidity but why should we let them be vocal? Why should we stop with the debates? Why should we stop spreading the truth? She's a Mary Sue. It's easy to "project" yourself on her somehow. She had no personality outside Eren. Like an untuned TV showing white noise has more personality than her.
Whats sad is that Mikasa in s1 when eren first "died" she took erens death head on went a little bit insane, was in her feels, and was able or close from moving forward from Eren and was gonna take his resolve to live, her character just went downhill from there but not that much, it was only after s3 she kinda had a problem
Not to mention Eren took a massive gamble by letting them survive all of this anyway. Eren basically granted them long lives full of PSTD flashbacks and night terrors and the looming fear of the possibility of war and death. The significant emotional and mental toll that the alliance experienced from this entire ordeal is insane. The ending doesn't work because it's not based in reality. It's just a cheap Shonen ending where many horrible tragedies can occur and the characters will just walk it off as if nothing happened. Realistically, the suicide rate would skyrocket after the Rumbling, nothing will ever be the same. Everyone would have PTSD. I'm shocked that no one in the alliance or anyone who survived the Rumbling in general didn't just immediately commit suicide. There is so much a person's mind can take before it breaks.

I agree that Eren should have done 100% Rumbling and killed the Alliance alongside the rest of the world, because, at that point, it would be better for them to leave that hell and reunite with their fallen comrades and dead loved ones!
The channel Video Books (formerly knows as The Eren Denialists) said the exact same thing. Eren's friends had to live in a fascist dystopia, under constant fear that they or their families could be killed.
Eren literally let Paradis down. They put their lives, hearts and souls all in for Eren, he was basically their savior. He tells them that he’s gonna save them and even though the rumbling is fucked up, I’m sure the people of Paradis didn’t wanna get decimated, especially for no reason. He was the protagonist of Paradis, RIP Eren.

Well, Eren said that the world see them as monsters who can transform and this is correct. They are a threat, BUT the only way they can do that is being injected (which Marley did) or transform at the command of the Founding titan. Without those two happening they are humans. So, yeah, they are not that much of a threat because even they don't want to become titans. It's always the enemy who fed the world the danger.

Eren cares about his friends. But he also cares about his freedom and Paradis. He said he wouldn't leave Paradis to fate. Yet that's exactly what he does. (also he indirectly killed Sasha and Hanji so I guess they aren't his friends. Also a million people are more important that half a dozen people.) His friends die in AnR because they went after Eren even after Eren told them he would not stop the Rumbling. Eren didn't want them to die, but he had no choice.

They must have missed those panels. No one said he doesn't care about his friends, but his duty and goals are way bigger than "only cared about his friends" .
Ch 139 defenders probably only cared about the alliance not being dead and that's how they're fine with it. But If they really want a friendship power tropes then there's plenty of animes out there which it focuses on friendship, but do not make the aot we grew up with about friendship and defending it. If Eren loved Mikasa so much, then why didn't he make his captains imprison her somewhere, by any means? The 139th chapter says he had no idea, if his friends would survive. Sasha died on that mission in Liberio, and Eren allowed Mikasa to go after him, save him and fight in the enemy's area. WTF? Love? You gotta be kidding me! Historia was the only one to be safe, not only because of her status but also because Yeager made the whole plan to protect her, and you still think he cared about Mikasa more than anyone else? Pf

The problem with the original ending is that it just ruins Eren's character as a whole. I mean, he is all about freedom, being born in this world, friendship, revenge, ending the hatred cycle, but we got in 139 him just reduced in a puppet who rejects ALL his ideals for his friends, even letting some of them dying. It was all meant to be "I carry my ideals all along with some sacrifice (his friends)", but he just kills billions of people, including his family and himself, for his damn friends. The same friends who instead to letting him save THEM, they kill him!
Than he rejects zeke's plan because children are important and special and they have to live free and not pay for the sins of their fathers, and in the end in order to save his 6-7 friends he let the future children to live in war and sufference.

Only to have the second person to continuously emotionally abuse you and rebuff your advances. That's not love!! It's an unequal and unfair power dynamic that leads to abuse. And people should never settle for people who aren't into them. You're Setting yourself up to be treated like crap because it's human nature to take advantage of people as much as you can. And then when they're over you they dispose of you. Most people aren't attracted to desperation a lot of people are turned off by that. These are the lessons you learn as you grow up. My only Cope, Hope, Rope, theory is that Isayama purposefully made this ending as an Alternate outcome. That’s why he said as he got closer to the last chapters of AOT, he was going through forums trying to find theories about the ending. I think he choosing one that would make the most sense as an alternative. The Anime will get the Original ending since more people will see it. It would also explain why he is so quiet and vague about the ending.

3:26 one problem with this argument is that right after revealing his goal to the people of Paradis he tells his friends that they are free to stop him but the only way to do so is to kill him. Ending defenders say that he was lying during this speech and that his last line proves that he in fact wants his friends to kill him. This is a plausible argument from ending defenders imo.
But then again, there are numerous other panels where Eren literally showed that he doesnt want Eldians to go extinct. Remember the panel where he looks at Freida with rage because she suggests that Eldians become extinct. Not to mention, in his inner thoughts he says that he cannot accept a future where Eldia doesn't survive. Also in 139, the very same chapter that these ending defenders love so much, he says that he wasn't sure if all his friends would survive. Like dude why would Eren go through all this trouble he wasn't even sure if he would accomplish his supposed main goal according to ending defenders.
And if his friends were all that mattered to him, maybe he should have used the 50 year plan or Zeke's plan. Certainly better than genociding 80% of the world right?

They threw 138 chapters with Eren mentioning freedom and protecting paradise and then goes "his friends are his priority" bs. They believed one chapter which it is has no buildup story-wise and characters-wise. Everything is different and everything looks off. Why they can't except that it's a bad chapter and bad ending?

The arguments of 139 i discussed on internet are..." after all Mikasa was the real protagonist she moves the plot and bla bla" " they had to kill them to destroy the the power of titans " so during10 years the whole fandom didn't know really who was the protagonist and idk this other person knows about the tree saying us that power of titans didn't disappear, idk what how they interpreted this story at this point bc as you said Eren giving a damn for his friend's families makes feel the rumbling pointless, he went to protect his people's future to just 6 persons(his friends)
I find it ironic that Eren called Zeke's euthanasia plan "messed up" but his plan of murdering over a billion people and leaving survivors who are sure to come back and kill the future descendants for an action done by their ancestor (Eren) isn't.
Eren caring about his friends is no excuse for the death and suffering that the future Eldian people are going to experience.

eren saw the future so he knew that armin and mikasa would survive the marley arc. Also, the jaegerist bombing wasn't eren's doing. That was the people that were choosing to follow him, and again he knew they'd survive that since he saw the future. (btw im not defending 139 i know that its garbage)

I haven’t read the entire manga yet but I’ve seen enough to truly understand. I am an Eremika shipper but I understand Eren’s true motivation. His path was set in stone ever since Titans were brought into this world.

I originally thought the 139th chapter was mediocre personally, but I think the added pages made it more decent ^^'
Eren's plan was shitty but he could not see infinitely in the future. He only knew about what would happen until his last breath. Imo he gave too much importance to the titans existence and thought destroying them would be enough to stop war. Paradis would be strong enough to be the number 1 nation and not getting attacked by any dangerous opponent.
The thing is that he did not know that technology would go far enough for the island to go to waste in a century. And he did not know that the titan curse would keep existing. War and global conflict can't be totally avoided, especially not by a genocide. The main character being wrong and failing is not a bad thing imo.
The ending is not great at all but it fits with the overall story to me, especially with the new pages.
The only very weird and bad stuff in the chapter is the writing in the end of Eren's dialogue with Armin. Everyone thanking the guy who caused the worst war / genocide / disaster to have ever happened was kinda terrible. Just let everyone say Eren is a douche. Armin saying goodbye to his former best friend in a moving way is cool, but thanking him for his actions...
The ghosts saying goodbye was also kinda cheezy to me, but I guess the paths disappearing could explain it.

The sad thing is after reading his interviews, I don't think 139 is a retcon. All his choices regarding the dialogue & the framing of particular scenes, show that he's capable enough write something that seems logical on the surface. By his own admission, when he's in the flow he can make connections & write well for "sidestories" that are unimportant to his main story. But when it came to telling the actual story he wanted to tell, he admits that he bottled it. He was too cowardly to challenge himself, to do work necessary for his intended story to make sense. That's why he didn't permanently change the Eren Mikasa dynamic in chapter 50, with a kiss, becos he was afraid he couldn't develop the relationship, even though their romance was the entire fucking reason for this story, allegedly. This is unsurprising when you reflect on all of the romantic relationships in AoT. The best he could do was show how the relationships & bonds were formed but he never delved deeply into the intricay of the love in any of them. E.g. Mikasa is meant to obsessively love Eren like how Casca original adored Griffith (from Berserk), but when you compared both, the lack of depth in the writing of Mikasa's love (and her entire character tbh) becomes painfully apparent.
So I'm not surprised an author who would run from his main challenge would write 139. He used "only X knows" & time skips for critical parts of the story becos he's been skipping the key challenges required to make him a better writer, capable of concluding his story in a logical & satisfying way for all of his audience. Especially for the fools interested in the deep message he was trying to express, by tackling such weighty themes & exploring dispicable human acts such as the holocaust & genocide. Turns out that was just an aesthetic he borrowed to tell his romance flick 😐
I'm not surprised he readily discarded Eren's character just to enjoy drawing him whining & wrap up EM "romance", becos he cheapened the weight of sacrifices made by the scouts when he brought them back just to blatantly force an emotional reaction from his readers. So they'd be manipulated into think this was a satisfying ending, & ignoring all the inconsistencies & bad writing. Which isn't new, becos after the time skip it becaming more & more obvious that characters were behaving out of character or unintelligently, whenever he wanted to get a reaction or needed to it for the plot, irrespective of if it made sense.
From this and all the memes he includes in his story etc, imo he just likes drawing to get a reaction, rather than to tell a meaningful story.
