Train Climbing Steep Grade With DPU Helper Pushing, Hidden Pedestrian Railroad Crossing, USA Trains!

  • Helper locomotive pushing heavy mixed freight up steep grade at top of hill. Listen to her climb the grade! There is a hidden pedestrian railroad crossing at the top of the grade that has been here since the 1940s. I caught a heavy mixed freight with steel coils and distributed power unit on the rear. Then a long double stack intermodal drops down the hill under me. This is an awesome hidden location that not many railfans know about. Homes and businesses are on both sides of the tracks and the pedestrian crossing is hidden in the trees. This is the Norfolk Southern main line from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Cincinnati, Ohio known as The Rathole Line. The city of Cincinnati owns it and the main road channel is 160.950 and end of train devices use 452.940. I filmed this on October 14, 2020. Thanks for watching!

    Nice to see your autumn (=fall) colour as well as the trains. I wonder about the last stack track with all those empty flats and the loaded containers on the rear. If this was rendered in model RR terms, it would be prone to 'string-lining'. Is the same problem not translated to full size railroading?

    Just think of how many 18-wheelers would have been needed to carry that load of steel coils, as trucks would have been restricted to just one coil each because of the weight per coil.

    • @ut000bs
      @ut000bs 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, those coils weigh probably 55,000 to 60,000 pounds each. Add the truck weight and you might have to leave a tool box behind and some clothes. 😉👍

    Last time I was there, we shot Southern GP30s and GP35s on the southbound "spark plug."
    About the hottest train on SR ry.
    1976.
    Sparkplug was a Detroit(B&O) to Atlanta auto-parts train. I have some literature from the 1940s and the train was listed back then.
    The train does not run anymore, for one thing both Ford and GM have closed their plants in Atlanta.
    These 2 plants at one time made the Ford Taurus, and the GM Lumina(dust-buster vans).

      Hi Gerry, I asked about this last week and got a useful reply: left hand and right hand running can depend on the source of investment to build the line (eg LH for British funded), while others can switch sides or even try dual running (which I’d find terrifying) from time to time.

  • @dennispersson9466
    @dennispersson9466 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's an almost perfect spot for getting videos, and the chain link fencing has the perfect sized openings to allow the right size lenses without interference with the images. It also protects the engines from overhead vandalism. The only problem I noticed, is no side views up close, but hey, most ground level vid's can't show any overhead info.
    1 to10 rating of 9.9 !
    P.S.: I do N scale, and your shots of the steel coils gave me an idea to use 55 gal. H O barrels painted silver, with the barrel bands painted black, for banding. Thanks for giving me the idea! I'll have to send you an attaboy, instead of cash, because my Christmas shopping is using my spare cash this month.

    Interestingly, those types of pedestrian bridges are very common over here in the UK, perhaps being a much smaller country we have much less room for over- and under-passes. I guess too that you guys in the US of A drive your cars/trucks more often, so have less need for such bridges.
