It's a Loram rail grinding train. It grinds the rail surface to the proper profile, prolonging the life of the track. The black tanks hold water to spray the area after they pass to prevent fires. What you thought were weights are the extra grinding wheels. If you can catch it working at night its quite a light show.
Rail Grinder to smooth out the tops of the rails. The yellow cars have and control the grinding wheels, and the black cars contain water to quench the sparks/any fires.
@@northeastrailwayproductions cant get much better. These machines do reprofiling the rail, if the head is worn and battered, but not yet so battered that the rail needs to be replaced.
That’s the Loram Rail Grinder, looks the same one that was grinding rail by my house earlier this year. They stopped on a sump siding in a community to refill water tanks off a fire hydrant.
its a rail grinder, with use the rails wear out, so the top surface must be reground periodically to restore it to proper shape the tanks likely have water so they can sprinkle over the tracks they just ground. often there will be a small hi-rail firetruck following behind with a guy in the back who can use a water cannon to put out any fires this creates which got past the sprinklers.
I never knew they resurfaced the rail like that. I just thought, (when one goes bad, replace it). It makes sense now because the Rails are all welded to one single piece, no more joints.
It's a LORAM rail grinding machine. The Yellow Machines do the grinding and profiling of the railhead to eliminate flattened railheads and to allow trains to roll along with less rail to wheel friction. The tank cars all contain water that is sprayed out onto the ties and surrounding track area to extinguish any fires that might get started due to the sparks created during the grind process.
@cawalshx2 I've yet to see one in person but there are some videos on TH-cam showing them in action. They are very impressive in the night videos with the sparks flying everywhere.
Not everyone runs across these... they repaired the railroad next to my work. I have never been around an active railroad every day nor paid attention. Most people won't know what it does. And if you read the comments, I left it up to viewers to tell me vs. just Google it. It's called "Interacting with viewers.". Lol
LORAM Rail Grinding train. Grinds worn rails back to specified profile to prevent wheel wear and potential derailments. On busy transcons, may be done annually.
I have never seen one of these at all. Didn't know there was such a thing. I wish I got it coming by my house at night working. My gf caught it coming back. Thanks for the comment!.
Yeah, I didn't bother to Google it, I wanted my audience to interact with me. They did lol, some people are a little snarky, but hey, that's the internet, lmao 🤣.
They bring that machine behind my house about every 2 years grinding the rail head, there 2 csx mainlines runing behind my house coming out of the new castle yard in pa im west of it in youngstown ohio there also 2 siding tracks that gets used switching out pipe and gravel and empty cars coming in all the time
You must be new to rail fanning; it's a rail grinder to restore top shape after being worn down by movement of the cars. They carry a lot of water to suppress fires started by the sparks. Owned by private contractors, but monitored by railroad inspectors.
Not that new, I've done it on and off my whole life. Loved trains since I knew what they were lol. Got a set every year for Christmas, HO scale and a couple G scale sets. The past 2 years I've been pretty heavy into it and decided to post on youtube. In all my 37 years, I've never come across a rail grinder, lol.
And it wasn't only until last year that (if memory serves me right... never does), that they start doing 40+mph through my area. Before they upgraded, the track speeds were around 25mph tops, maybe a little less. I've never seen so much equipment until the end of last year and all this year.
I was a chance to work on one, But unfortunately I couldn't because of my mom and aunt were in bad health care and I was the only one who was taking care of them.
You said in the video let walk over to see the front of it and you walked towards the bridge that is actually the back of it the front of that machine is towards the back if those stores to your right
Amazing how some people look at something yet see nothing. Cannot make a decision even with signs on it to read. Why would any one grind ballast ???? All those grinding wheels underneath put the original head profile back on the rail so the wheels roll with the proper contact, less drag, less fuel used, less horsepower required. Maintenance !!
I put it up to let people interact with my channel. I was more looking at my phone screen and talking than paying attention at the time. I could’ve easily looked it up and played it off but I didn’t, I let the viewer interact and tell me. Like having a conversation instead of bashing someone for not knowing something. There’s this saying “you learn something new everyday.” Maybe you’ve heard of it. Lol

I saw it in action tonight. Came by then backed up, then kept going headed towards ayer.
Not even hard to look up either. Wtf kind of rail fan wouldn’t even know this.
It's a rail grinding train. It removes the surface imperfections from the rails.

Rail Grinders. Giving the rails a manicure.
Best description yet lmao 🤣
I was actually surprised at how much of a difference it makes. You can hear it as well as the trucks roll over. They make a different tone.

She's a Beast, Try and Catch Her at work Tonight, Best spark show you will ever see!!
I saw it!, it was AWESOME. Sadly I didn't have my camera on me.... I had food in my hands lmao
Something I'll never forget though

Rail Grinder, Brings the Rail heads back to Specifications.
I just saw it in action... so cool at night
Resurfacing crew , you should see that unit in operation you wouldnt want to be near it but its cool
I have, at night but I didn’t have my camera on me. Really cool sparks flying everywhere, then the water tanks came behind it.

Thanks. Seems like a lot to grind rail, Ive only seen small and simple. Would be cool to see in real time. Its great to be corrected. Thanks again

@@robertdoss7513 Well its on my road trip list.
Looks like one of those trains that smooth out the rail heads grinding the surface
A giant compressor. Those are pressure tanks. The round things on the yellow cars are air filters and
the yellow cars are compressors.
Ive stand corrected. Thanks Much. God Bless.
Well, for anyone older than ten and seen more than one train should know that's a rail grinder.

Never seen one of those. Cool!
It grinds the track, I saw it come by.. the glowing red sparks flying. I didn't have time to record it sadly

Hello there!
It's a rail grinder. 🤦🏻♂️
😂😂😂😂😂🤷🏽♂️ I didn't know. There's a first time for everything my man, lol. Thanks for commenting lol

Rail Profiler(Rail Grinder)
I find it hard to believe he's never seen or know what a train is😊

Well... I was going to tell ya it was a LORAM, but it looks like a few folks beat me to it.

That would've been an awesome job to have!. Family comes before everything though. Good man right there.

I realized that later on that night when it came by working. Thanks for the comment 👍
TRACK REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT
Not even close to being correct.
