You are a class act Dustin. Great demonstration. You manage to get deep into the machine without losing the viewer. You're video just sold one more TR-8s :)
I'm a total beginner, but this is helping to make sense of things! Such a powerful machine and great addition for dj sets / entry to production (whilst not being an entry level machine at all!) Thanks for sharing
Great deal! Our used TR-8s typically sell for $599 - $899CAD, which is between €400 and €600, so yours for €530 is right in the ballpark. We hope you love it, thanks for watching!
Guy behind camera: "Okay Dustin I think we got enough video footage we're good to go!" *Dustin still in-depth* : "Huh...what did you say?" Guy behind camera: ". . .Nevermind." TR-8S is a win! cant wait to grab one.
Need some help….thanks to a very understanding wife and Santa- we have a TR8s! However have an issue with sound from channels- certain channels- BD, SD etc are really quiet- barely hear them. Only way to change is going into the Shift/ Inst mode and go to PAN and adjust up- can hear then, but as soon as you change pattern- no sound again……. I am bewildered!!
This drum machine is awesome! It looks like you could get so much out of this. Do you think I would be able to connect this to my tascam DP 24; Through quarter inch input And possibly record beats on to my tascam?
I have never used any kind of production equipment how easy is this to use from a complete beginner point of view plus if I make something am I able to record and export as a wav or mp3 file?
Thank you for this video. My english is not so good but I have a question. Is it possible to make a melody that is longer than 16 steps? For example: My Kick 1 5 9 13 (Loop) My melody 2 4 11 14 15 21 27 32 (Loop)
Yes you are able to make patterns up to 128 steps long by chaining variations A-H. If there are any instruments you wish to play a 1 bar loop while your melody is longer, simply copy, for example, your kick pattern from A to any other variation to have the same pattern on each, then you can write the longer melody on another instrument with different programming for each variation.
Hi! Thanks for a brilliant demo. Have you figured out how to get the STEP REVERB to work? I select an instrument, press down a step and turn the REVERB LEVEL knob, but it changes the reverb for the whole kit! Clearly this is not meant to work this way?
To achieve this you have to set the CTRL knob for the desired track to “REVERB SEND”, then you can control the level of reverb send for that track per step. You can access the CTRL knob settings through the KIT edit menu.
I have a tr-8 and I just now have the tr-8s in front of me. The tr-8 sounds slightly better, however, the tr-8 is much easier to play. Firstly the tr-8 slopes downward where as the tr-8 is completely flat, which means you will need to tilt it, unless standing. And the whole point of playing live is to be able to change the kits quickly and easily, to something similar but different. With the tr-8s I am having to turn a knob for kit change as opposed to doing it more simply and quickly on a tr-8 pad, and you might change genres if you aren't careful. Also the tr-8s pads/knobs are much heavier, and this may be personal preference, but I like the lighter tr-8 pads. All in all though, all things considered, the tr-8s is a better value. Haven't tried the custom samples yet but I am crossing my fingers.
Okay - here's my big question - Can you hit record and play a beat out (between different pads) on the step sequencing pads live? Or are you only limited to playing live rhythms via the single pad next to the tempo knob?
For $700, the TR-8S is a great option for up and comers and\or taking on the road. But no professional or audiophile would prefer it to either the TR-808 or TR-909 in the studio. As many have noted, the Kicks aren't as warm or round, and the snare\clap\hi-hats aren't as crisp. Where you really hear the difference though is when full patterns are played, the vintage machines have a natural sounding 'groove' that isn't recreated in the TR-8S. This is due to the vintage machines having real Analog Step Sequencers. When a pattern is played, the spacing of the notes isn't 100% accurate and microscopic inconsistencies occur that actually makes it sound + feel more organic. On top of that the sound sources themselves are Analog which introduces similar inconsistencies in the audio itself. Together this is why playing a pattern on either the TR-808 or TR-909 over and over again doesn't sound like a loop. But if you sampled a pattern directly from either machine, looping a measure of it would sound like a loop because its exactly the same every time. Likewise, the TR-8S has a digital sequencer that's perfectly quantized and plays back exactly the same every time... making it sound like a loop. Although the TR-909 has Midi, no professional sequences it that way, it sounds better to sequence internally and sync via Din Sync. The market never lies- the price of vintage Minimoog Model D's has dropped dramatically in the last two years because Moog's re-release of it is literally Exactly the same. On the other hand the price of vintage TR-808's and TR-909's have skyrocketed to around $4,000 each, this is because they simply sound and feel better. Roland has released multiple 808/909/303 emulators over the years and within a short period of time they sell for a fraction of the retail price on Ebay. I have zero faith Roland will ever release proper 100% analog drum machines in the future. Even if they tried, they'd find a way to screw it up by adding a digital controller + sequencer or whatever.
Nobody cares, holy shit. There are no shortage of analog 808/909 clones out there for the people who want them. Even if Roland made an analog "remake" of either machine it would still just be another clone.
Please show me where you can buy a boutique for a fraction of the original price? You've over exaggerated to make a point. The originals sound warmer but the differences are not that significant. The new gear sounds fantastic and has many added features not found in the older gear. The Boutique ju06 cannot be got for less than 500 quid second hand as it's been discontinued. The same will happen to the other gear as Roland stops making them too.
The maximum length of a single audio file that can be imported is approximately 180 seconds (3 minutes) at 44.1 kHz / mono. Stereo files or higher sample rates would shorten the maximum length the TR-8S can load.
I was looking at several different role and models. Are these from where regularly updated? Or is there a newer model for 2021? I was also looking at the mx1 and the vt-4. I play with rolling decades ago and would like to get back into learning about the newer models and their differences.
The outputs are just 1/4", either mono or stereo. So you could connect it to anything you want. Direct to an amp, into your mixer (presumably going out to an amp/speakers), straight into an audio interface to your computer, etc.
Thanks Eric! There are no options to manually sequence a fill unless it is using a variation slot. If you don't want to use a slot A-H for a fill, you will have to use the auto fills or the scatter effect.
Long & McQuade Musical Instruments thank you so much for your reply. So in that case, how does the device “decide” what the pattern is for fill 1 and fill 2?
Sorry Eric, we misunderstood your question! We thought you were referring to 18:47 when Dustin shows how to use a variation as a fill - we didn't realize you meant Fill 1 and Fill 2 under buttons 14-15. Each pattern has 8 variations A-H, PLUS two fill-ins. To sequence Fill 1 and Fill 2 under buttons 14-15, Hold Shift + AUTO FILL IN, there you will be able to select Fill 1 or 2 to compose/edit. You program them in the same way you would program a variation A-H. On that note, Scatter type and depth are settings found under PTN SETTING. Hold Shift + PTN SELECT.
I've been trying to find a beat machine that's close to or similar to the "E-MU SP-1200 Beat machine" Would you say that the "Roland TR-8S Rhythm Performer is that machine? Thanks!
We wouldn't say that the TR-8S is a direct replacement for the SP-1200, but since you can load in your own samples, you can get it to sound pretty much exactly like one.
is it possible to like create Rhythm and make them as Styles for the Yamaha keyboards? I own a PSR-280 and a YPG-235. I read that with Genos and SX900? You will have to make the beats by hands and I am terrible with it. This Device I'm watching seems pretty cool!
Love tr8s! Anyone know how to set up the individual outs globally? Ie, setting it up so all kits and patterns go out thru the individual outs? Currently I can only figure out how to do that for each kit, but would love to set up so the individual outs is the master default as opposed to the outs defaulting to the “mix” stereo outs. Thanks!
There is no global option. The channel outputs are assigned per kit to allow more versatility. You can set up the outputs in a blank kit the way you would like and quickly save it across as many kit locations as you want, creating your own initial template. System output settings are used to set the behavior of each assignable output - Normal, Boost, or Trigger.
you can't chain patterns to create a song? Like programming to repeat A three times, then B two times, go back to A, then C two times, etc, then hit the play button to have it played, like in the Stepper Acid? If so none of the tutorials I've watched or the manual says how. The manual is somewhat lacking at times forcing the reader to get more details on Roland's website, how much harder could it be to include all pertinent data in the manual?
is there a nudge or microtiming function in this wonderfullthang and i missed one point... can i tune the sounds to a specific Key, would it show it to me in what key i tuned the sounds?
We rigged up a small electrical current through Dustin's TR-8S before filming without telling him. We commend him for keeping it together for the whole video.
The tr8 grown up, you really make me want to buy it! Just one question, you mention the trigger outputs for cv but can it also sequence external drummaschine/module....,I believe so, but just to be sure. Good video 👍✌️
Those are promo items available for pickup only at the Roland Inspiration Centre in Toronto, and quantities are very limited. If you're in Toronto and are interested in getting one, visit them in person at 1179 King St W.
Fancy technology there! I as a guitar player in a metal band would love to experiment with stuff like that. Is(n't) there the oppurtunity to attach some headphones? Would help to create some new stuff on your ears before launching it, or?
@@user-gi6ee8vj1y well its not a bass machine but a drum machine. But it is possible to place some bass drums and use the tuning knob to emulate as if it were a bass guitar hitting different notes. You should search on tr8skreamer for a simplyfied method of using this machine for melodies.
@@noordholland648 thanks for the suggestions. I want a drum machine with somewhat realistic bass guitar sounds. I want to use it to create a foundation for old school pop songs like, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Davie Bowie, etc. Later, I can add keyboards/ strings. I think I'm looking for a more traditional sound.
Where can I p/u Roland t'shirts in Canada ? They're sold online in the US, but no where to be seen in Canada. Roland Canada employees wear the swag, how about all us Roland loyalists too ?
whow, what a cool tool that tr8sl!! makes it sense to couple that machine to a tb 3? could you show that in an video? i would love to see that roland inspiration center traveling to toronto ;)) all the best from berlin germany
I want a sampler that plays sequences and that can replace a sample by sampling from an input in real-time holding one of the pads and a big orange rec button.
This is a dumb question, but I'n going to ask it anyway. I'm a big fan of the R8 mkII, does the TR-8S contain any of those old samples? If not, is it too early to, as a feature request, to ask for these sounds in any update sample packs? By the way, I'm still patiently waiting on my backordered tr-8s.... i can't wait
Now I was in the Virginia Beach base Roland store and I saw they came back out with the classic Roland Juno-60 keyboard but the new one is called the Roland Juno-60 XS
TH-cam does a really good job showing me thing I want but can't afford.

For example:

Long & McQuade Musical Instruments omg thank you!! This isn’t listed in the manual and was driving me crazy.
Looks great for producing old school 90’s hardcore music!
you can sample...open world.
Awesome Demo!
I've been trying to find a beat machine that's close to or similar to the "E-MU SP-1200 Beat machine"
Would you say that the "Roland TR-8S Rhythm Performer is that machine?
Thanks!
We wouldn't say that the TR-8S is a direct replacement for the SP-1200, but since you can load in your own samples, you can get it to sound pretty much exactly like one.
this is amazing
Tanx for your DEMO. Very understandable!!
Glad it was helpful!
is it possible to like create Rhythm and make them as Styles for the Yamaha keyboards? I own a PSR-280 and a YPG-235. I read that with Genos and SX900? You will have to make the beats by hands and I am terrible with it. This Device I'm watching seems pretty cool!
I wish y’all would come back out with the TR-808 and TR-909 like a 35 year anniversary addition
They won’t, but Behringer will.
The layout looks very intuitive.
The manual is somewhat lacking at times forcing the reader to get more details on Roland's website, how much harder could it be to include all pertinent data in the manual?
ah you're no fun anymore@@Kierant2010
Great demo thanks!
Glad you liked it!
is there a nudge or microtiming function in this wonderfullthang and i missed one point... can i tune the sounds to a specific Key, would it show it to me in what key i tuned the sounds?
No there is currently no way to tune sounds to a specific key, you can only increase or decrease the pitch of a sample by +/- semitones.
How do I set up 3/4 or 5/4 beat ? Thank’s
Will there be an Editor for this similar to the one for the Integra_-7?
that is one beautiful instrument
why do you pull your hands back really fast from the buttons?
We rigged up a small electrical current through Dustin's TR-8S before filming without telling him. We commend him for keeping it together for the whole video.
It just came out of the oven.
Very nice demo!
I've seen in some shops that it can play 32 steps patterns but never actually saw it in a demo. Is it a real functionality?
Yes, check out 13:51. 1 bar is 16 steps, and Dustin goes through variations A through D, which results in a 64 step (4 bar) sequence.
The tr8 grown up, you really make me want to buy it! Just one question, you mention the trigger outputs for cv but can it also sequence external drummaschine/module....,I believe so, but just to be sure. Good video 👍✌️
So - it kinda does P-Locks (not sure of level/depth - ANY parameter...?), but can also integrate motion sequences on a per-pattern basis?
where can we find those woody keyboards for the Boutiques? never seen those before.
Those are promo items available for pickup only at the Roland Inspiration Centre in Toronto, and quantities are very limited. If you're in Toronto and are interested in getting one, visit them in person at 1179 King St W.
aargh. I wish. I'm in SF.
Does the input go to a dedicated channel fader?
Can I sync the TR8s with my Pioneer XZ?
I just bought this with a awesome pa system..cant wait to create some beats to jam ny guitar with
Did you already sell it or is it just catching dust?
Roland TR-8S or Elektron Model:Samples or Novation Circuit Tracks?
Perfect demo
Can you layer triplet and 16th note patterns simultaneously on this machine?
Fancy technology there! I as a guitar player in a metal band would love to experiment with stuff like that.
Is(n't) there the oppurtunity to attach some headphones? Would help to create some new stuff on your ears before launching it, or?
Can I create my own drum patterns with realistic baselines and other effects? It seems like this machine is full of preset beats.
Its fully customizable
@@noordholland648 so, it's equipped with bass guitar sounds? I would have liked to hear him create a drum pattern with realistic bass guitar.
@@user-gi6ee8vj1y well its not a bass machine but a drum machine. But it is possible to place some bass drums and use the tuning knob to emulate as if it were a bass guitar hitting different notes. You should search on tr8skreamer for a simplyfied method of using this machine for melodies.
@@user-gi6ee8vj1y like old school bass music bass lines are created with tr 808 BDs in this way
@@noordholland648 thanks for the suggestions.
Excellent tutorial
HELL YEAH !!!! AM GETTING THIS SHIT .....THANK YOU FOR THE DEMONSTRATION.
with this machine can i compose some glitchy drums like aphex twin or squarepusher?
machinedrum is probably what you're looking for
Yes, especially with the new FM update.
Torn between this and the mc707.
More tempted by this to be honest
Is this more for like techno music/ electro, should I get this model or the 16 patterns one?
Can I use this in a DAW?
Yes
If you get familiar with the hardware you could make hip-hop, RnB, funk, etc. It's a powerful tool that I would and will definitely add to my set-up.
Great demo
Where can I p/u Roland t'shirts in Canada ? They're sold online in the US, but no where to be seen in Canada. Roland Canada employees wear the swag, how about all us Roland loyalists too ?
Contact a Roland Inspiration Centre in Toronto or Vancouver. That's where we got ours. ;)
whow, what a cool tool that tr8sl!! makes it sense to couple that machine to a tb 3? could you show that in an video? i would love to see that roland inspiration center traveling to toronto ;)) all the best from berlin germany
Here is a question: WHat kind of sound file does the sample have to be, to be accepted into the TR8S?
WAV
or AIFF - in mono or stereo, upto 96kHz
Got me. Want this beast.
By the way, I'm still patiently waiting on my backordered tr-8s.... i can't wait
you can load your own samples
How does one go about visiting the Roland Inspiration Center?
One would simply go to 1179 King St W in Toronto between 1pm - 4:30pm on a weekday.
HI THERE. CAN YOU CONFGURE THIS TO PLAY IN 11 different channels on ableton?
Now I was in the Virginia Beach base Roland store and I saw they came back out with the classic Roland Juno-60 keyboard but the new one is called the Roland Juno-60 XS
Where can i find more of ur music?
Love it getting one
