I love my TR-8s. I'm a guitarist first so rhythm programming has always been a challenge for me. After owning the unit for several months I became determined to learn it and create drums I could use. It's a great machine. No more scrolling through my loop folder to find something that fits the occasion.
Audiopilz could make videos that are 30mins long, instead chooses to make 9 minute videos that you have to pause every 5 seconds to get every joke/meme... epic! Thank you for making this
Got my TR-8S a month ago and love it. the "TR Editor" companion software is also amazing for crafting your own patches on the fly and eliminates the menu diving.
TR-8S is probably the best drum machine ever made. I have owned it quite a few years now and I it never stops amazing me how great it sounds and how fun it is to use. No other drum machine has ever given me the same experience.
That's the reason I bought one (second-hand, mint). I was looking at an R8M before, because, you know, rackz'n'stuff. But as a friend pointed out: it's the last drum machine you'll ever need. And yes, I like it that it looks like a Christmas tree, or something that will upset your conservative neighbours who'll think that you've gone all woke.
6:00 By the year 2027 you will end up having to zoom soooo far out just to include all your 280 TB-3s in the same shot, that we won't be able to see your hands anymore
These videos are always so enjoyable!!! I actually got a TR-8S about a year ago for the first time and I love it. It's a cool "Roland Drum Sound Classics" box but for me the real use is that it has a Control Surface Mode where it can be used as a midi controller. All the faders and most of the knobs send midi CC info in this mode. The sequencer is also still functional so I use this to program software drum machines or to just do single note triggers in my DAW. As a DAW accessory it's a brilliant side machine to have!!!
The Editor is a win, you can literally see everything TR-8s can do and structure Jams quickly. It is a performance machine and not a computer like DAW kinda similar to the MPC one. It's a great tool, a classic IMHO. Faders alone make it so much fun to play.
I just want to know which part they made fail this time. Microbrute = sequencer, Microfreak = started with shotty encoders, Drumbrute = failing noise source, Drumbrute impact = failing bpm pots . . and the list goes on and on 😂
Oh dear. Now there's 3 of them! Despite the limitations, this drum machine seems like a blast to use. You really went all out on the drums in this! Great video! :D
I upgraded from TR6s to TR8s a couple years ago. glad I did. When you need THOSE sounds it's hard to beat since the ACB sounds so good. The extra outputs makes all the difference, need them for sidechain. I pray that the next Digitakt has more outputs.
@@AudioPilz I realize that you could use it like a groove box but why would you put yourself through that? That’s what a sequencer is for. My workflow: get a burst of energy to import a bunch of samples and assemble some kits. Then some time in the future, get another burst of energy and make whole banks of patterns using the new kits. So when I’m working on a new song, I’ve got patterns I’ve haven’t used waiting for me.
@@rhill109 I've been following this idea for about 4 years now. I am at the step of making whole banks of patterns now. Should be using it for new songs soon. 😅
I have mine for 4 years now and have a tb3 but also 2 behringer 303’s. A crave and a ko2. More to come. I like to do it the oldschool way without a computer. It’s so easy to lose track of time when jamming on the gear and create some Acid techno. I love it!! Great video👍👍
Years ago I left you a comment where I said I was really happy you were enjoying the TB-3 so much because it was one of my favourite synths and I never saw anyone else talk about it. I got mine used for about £80 ages ago. When I saw you had 3 I couldn't help myself, I had to look at the used prices. £600! How could you? You made this thing I keep playing with my nose for a laugh into a legendary piece of gear.
I bought one used in mint condition, and it quickly became one of my favorite studio pieces (I wasn’t expecting it to). However, I DO hate its limitations: only 50MB of samples, or 300 pcs, whatever comes first; no sample management or bulk tool - it’s one by one, folks; the menu diving is typical Roland but passable; audio over USB sucks, it’s way too quiet when running as an aggregate device. Inputting melodies or bass notes is pure hell. And it definitely has an identifiable sound of its own, that doesn’t sound like a real 808 - it sounds like a TR-8S. You can hear it on the last demo jam here, for instance. Also - Florian, don’t ever stop doing the ”delay-y-y, reverbbb” FX - those are always still hilarious 😄
Having this drum machine has always been my dream, in 2022 I managed to buy it. I'm very happy with this machine, it's become the main piece of my set up and the one I care most about. Powerful tool if you know what it can do. Many times I just use the TR-8s to make a complex track. My opinion is that the TR-8s is already a classic, I see many artists that I admire, both new and old school, also using it as a centerpiece or auxiliary in their setups. A classic that Roland hadn't been able to make in a long time. I understand some complaints from some users, but for me it works completely. I have nothing to complain about. The ACB engine is great, the FM engine is also very versatile and not that difficult to use, a very interesting effects chain that allows you to create a very complex and unique sound design, the possibility of configuring multiple channel outputs, also compatibility with modular equipment /qlanalog with Trigger output, even being able to convert audio outputs to Trigger outputs, midi configurations that can integrate well with older equipment that tends to be problematic. There are many details that make this equipment exceptionally usable. Sensational equipment, I hope it has many years of life on the market and that more updates come.
how dare you?!? this is my set up's heart and soul, when you reminded us it was released 6 years ago it made me think is time to update, but to what? 🤔 hmm still waiting on Uli's linn drum 🤦🏻♂ that finale beat you made....Respect son!

Great episode, I almost felt as if you like this one. Considered selling several times and then fell back in love after ditching USB, relying on the analog outs, and treating it like a late-80s/early-90s beatbox that would have been built if they had access to technology from the future.
Modern classic. Not ashamed to admit that I use it more than my MIDIfied 808. The 808 still carries the weight but the TR8S is a rock solid daily driver.
I had one of these and like everybody else, I loved how it sounded. Shame there is SO MUCH menu-ing with only a tiny 2-line LED and a single knob to navigate it all.
There is an app but it doesn’t help with samples. It’s great for everything else though. But the problem for me is once you’ve got a computer and an app involved why not just use a drum machine plugin in your DAW. Unless you’re gigging out a lot and don’t want to take a computer with you i suppose.
@@jdrukman I hear you re. the "umbilical cord" to the computer, but nothing wrong with sample management over USB and then being able to take out your TR-8s for a gig with the samples you want loaded on it. Thanks to another YTBer, I've learned one more use for the Roland TR-8S. works as an awesome drum module. Waiting to see what Elektrons going to do with the "retirement" of the Digitakt.
I sold mine, no regrets. I just never got along with the buttons and the interface wasn't as useful as all that. Sliders get old after the first thrill wears off. In the end, the core Roland TR sounds on the MC101/707 are great enough and you get 3/7 extra polyphonic channels extra.
The drums sampled on 101/707 aren't nearly as good, sorry. Not even close. They don't breath, just static samples. You are only fooling yourself, anyone with an ear can tell the difference.
Had to decide between TR8S and MC707, got the 707 and I'm happy with it. Mainly using it with own samples anyway and as a drum machine it serves its purpose quite well. The synthesizer part is also quite capable. Does it have some annoying limitations? Sure! A lot of users complain about the missing sidechain compression btw. Looking forward to the video!
I enjoyed the TR-8S as my first drum machine, but after a while I sold it and never looked back. I found that I wanted more punch and grit to my percussion - I just gotta have EQ on my drums, top that off with compression, distortion, and scenes, and well... I love my Analog RYTM!
@@DNGMaestro It's a pretty standard Roland synth in many ways, it has one foot in the 70s sound wise, in the 80s IMO. The strength of it is the rich sounding VCOs and the filter is really good. But apart from that, it's all pretty much a standard synth, standard waveforms, you've got crossmod which is nice, but other than than it's vanilla as it gets!
YES YES YESSSSSSSSSSS. MORE AIRA! And I've waited so long for this one! I absolutely love my TR-8S, after being a MPC user before, I was enamored with the ability to do so much stuff live (all them knobs and sliders!), and so the TR-8s got me started collecting AIRA gear so that I could do just that. To this day I think it's my favourite piece of kit, and running it alongside my two TB-3s or System-8 can make me lose interest in the entire outside world for hours :D [watching] Oh wow, you're playing with THREE TB-3s? Now I have TB-3 envy!
Nice video! I actually don't know why the TR 8S gets so much flack! Actually....I kind of do, I ended up selling mine, but I bought another one back again because I missed it! LOL. I think it's just an aquired taste to those who may be looking for more of a groovebox, the 707 may be more suitable. But for a drum machine, I think it's right up there with just about anything out there especailly now that they've incorperated a TR-Editor software to save us from extensive menu-diving. Where I think it really shines is the expansive sound design features. I have fun creating a lot of one-shots and unique sounds with the Roland FX and tone shaping capbility of the FM Synth engine it has. Looking forward to more videos from you!
Had them both, sold them both. Now have a Perkons. I'd have another TR8S for when I need regular drum sounds and don't want to cause minor earth tremors locally! 😂
Lol love how as episodes progress, you just happen to have one TB more. Now we are at 3. PS machinedrum/syntakt meme killed me lolol together with the pincher.
So now the matter is crystal clear. Mr. Pilz has placed a hidden camera in my studio. There is no other explanation why 90% of my arsenal has now been recognized by BADGEAR! Including the TR-8S of course!
I worked at Serato on the integration of the TR devices (we spent a lot of time getting it to be as good as it is in terms of staying in sync). You do need to have the driver installed for it to work. But you also need a 'Serato primary device' or a 'Serato DJ Pro software license' (with a Serato compatible soundcard) in order for it to have any effect with the software.
Welcome to the weekend with a little bit of Roland❤ .. surprisingly this is still one of the top drum machines on the market currently in production. Elektron they make one as well, you know a flagship drum machine. The only way for Roland to go from this point is to make an all Analog drum machine with maybe a few sampled high hats and percussion… Oh wait a minute did they already do that one?😮

I must say... I did trash the TR8 (and S) when they got out... Then a friend got it... and it was kicking ass in the mix! Great machine! Now I have the Tr6s (can be USB powered). Great video as always!
Thank you so much!!!
Can't believe this wasn't the Astrolab, I'm disappointed in you Florian!
So hard to get if you're not a real synthfluencer;)
@@AudioPilz The Astrolab 'stage' keyboard seems perfect for BG. It fails in features as a stage keyboard and if you're doing your own material live, you're stuck with presets. It MAKES NO SENSE!
Yea, Astrolab is boring. However, it's a big step to their own workstation (the software internally runs on Linux now). In that sense, it's not BG.
Synthfluencer: when you sell your soul to shill overpriced products.
@@treetopjones737 Synthfluencer: This device was sent to me free of charge so you can never, ever see it on the channel ever again because I'm only reviewing it to sell it. I've never released anything longer than 45 second demos but if you're stupid enough to buy the device despite my personality, I'm more than willing to take your money for it through the affiliate links. Like and subscribe!
The jams this episode were especially *chefs kiss*
Thank you!!!
Both this channel and TR8S is 10/10
Except for the 16 step sequencer😭
@@htechdance x8 variations + 2x fills and the ability to chain patterns.
@@htechdance What ftc said plus you can also change the last step of instruments to create polyrythms.
❤️❤️❤️
Thanks to another YTBer, I've learned one more use for the Roland TR-8S. works as an awesome drum module. Waiting to see what Elektrons going to do with the "retirement" of the Digitakt.
Just dropped;)
I sold mine, no regrets. I just never got along with the buttons and the interface wasn't as useful as all that. Sliders get old after the first thrill wears off. In the end, the core Roland TR sounds on the MC101/707 are great enough and you get 3/7 extra polyphonic channels extra.
That sums it up nicely
The drums sampled on 101/707 aren't nearly as good, sorry. Not even close. They don't breath, just static samples. You are only fooling yourself, anyone with an ear can tell the difference.
Had to decide between TR8S and MC707, got the 707 and I'm happy with it. Mainly using it with own samples anyway and as a drum machine it serves its purpose quite well. The synthesizer part is also quite capable. Does it have some annoying limitations? Sure! A lot of users complain about the missing sidechain compression btw. Looking forward to the video!
AudioPilz, Your videos always brighten my day, so I subscribed!
❤️❤️❤️
I enjoyed the TR-8S as my first drum machine, but after a while I sold it and never looked back. I found that I wanted more punch and grit to my percussion - I just gotta have EQ on my drums, top that off with compression, distortion, and scenes, and well... I love my Analog RYTM!
Analog RYTM - I want one so bad!!!
@@AudioPilz I've seen enough of your jams to know you'd make bangers with it! Just don't let me see you badmouthing my baby on bad gear...
@@spaceemanspiff watch out - it just needs enough haters on the internet to qualify!
Your synth gear reviews are the best around ❤
Thank you so much!!!
Amazing drum machine! Still waiting for the Jupiter 8 in the channel!
J-8 moving up my list;)
The JP-8 is trash... thing can hardly stay in tune, doesn't even have a velocity sensitive keyboard. Boring vanilla analog sound design- yawwwwnnn.
@@lundsweden clearly you have a lot of experience with it.
@@lundsweden like i said, you clearly have a world of experience with it.
To this day I think it's my favourite piece of kit, and running it alongside my two TB-3s or System-8 can make me lose interest in the entire outside world for hours :D
[watching]
Oh wow, you're playing with THREE TB-3s? Now I have TB-3 envy!
It's the three decks version of acid synths
IMO, the best drum machine currently available.
👍👍👍
Patiently waiting no more. Thanks!
😀😀😀
Thank you so much!!!
It's the best drum machine , BEST Drum Machine.
👍👍👍
Nah this seems like exactly what i need. THANK YOU AUDIOPILZ
Just the Novation KS rack to go and you've done all my gear! :-D
I'd love to have one of these!
@@AudioPilz It's currently in storage as I'm renovating the house, if you cover shipping, you're more than welcome to borrow it for a month or so.
Awesome music again! The second jam and the last track were superb!!!
Thank you so much!!!
Can't wait for the MC707 edition 😆
You know too much;)
@@AudioPilz please mention haw bad the zen editor integration with the 707 is. the editor for tr-8s is godsend compared to.
I was about to ask if the 707 has made an appearance.
@@AudioPilzany chance you can do a duo - mc707 and tr8s as nature intended?
Man you just keep churning it. Respect!!
Thank you!!!
Had them both, sold them both. Now have a Perkons. I'd have another TR8S for when I need regular drum sounds and don't want to cause minor earth tremors locally! 😂
Mmmmmh, Perkons...
Yes a Perkons. Still saving for that one. But most probably the best ever!
Great episode. I think the 8S is the last of the great Roland drum machines, and I will never sell mine.
Thank you!!!
02:58 THIS!!!! SO!!! HARD!!!
I feel you!
NOO My favourite cherished drum machine! 😭😭😆 (Epic video as always!)
Well, I am labelling my 8S "The Dark Knight" now.

loved this episode. I have a TR-8S and absolutely love it.
Thank you!!!
Review the Waldorf Iridium!
Great suggestion, thank you!!!
This Astrolab meme at the end.... Mmmmh, future video ?! As always , thank you for the hard work ! ❤ The friday audiotools candy !
Moving up my list
Oh no your TB-3's are replicating 😂🤣
I have a secret deal with Uli
I love my TR-8S! I’m not smart enough to use the hidden features but it gets the job done when I need reliable drum sounds
👍👍👍
TR8s is a top unit! Bad gear? Have you run out of crap to slate?
I think that' statistically implausible...;)
@AudioPilz Why not just review Behringers cheap, unreliable crap. Now that is bad gear!
07:47 Finale ( Footwork / Juke ) is such a nice and groovy vibe Florian
Thank you!!!
Sounded thin I sold it.
….and all the drums sounded the same.
👍👍👍
Dang I bought one of these like a month ago and now theres a bad gear episode on it? This is a win.
😀😀😀
TR8s is the absolute NOt Bad Gear.
Lol love how as episodes progress, you just happen to have one TB more. Now we are at 3. PS machinedrum/syntakt meme killed me lolol together with the pincher.
Thank you!!!
Aaa here it is. It’s good. I am writing this before your review.
❤️❤️❤️
So now the matter is crystal clear. Mr. Pilz has placed a hidden camera in my studio. There is no other explanation why 90% of my arsenal has now been recognized by BADGEAR! Including the TR-8S of course!
You know too much;)
@@AudioPilz what i know is, that next episode goes on to my next BG device
That finale chune is proper good. Asa and Sorrow energy.
Thank you!!!
Welcome to the weekend with a little bit of Roland❤
.. surprisingly this is still one of the top drum machines on the market currently in production.
Elektron they make one as well, you know a flagship drum machine.
The only way for Roland to go from this point is to make an all Analog drum machine with maybe a few sampled high hats and percussion… Oh wait a minute did they already do that one?😮
;)
