After a 52 year hiatus from skipping rope I recently started “doing the thing” again. I’ve incorporated it into my daily two mile walk at a local playground with the padded material around the playground equipment. Jumped one session on the concrete and quickly learned that my 70 yo knees didn’t like that. Still relearning, I only jump three days a week but it’s coming back to me! I refuse to be a fat, slow old man😎

I am 39. Back to jumping rope after experimenting with different sports and martial arts and still think that bodyweight exercises (pullups, pushups, squats) plus jumping rope are the best for me and better to stick with it. Because it is free, it is efficient and you can do it till you are old. And important is that you dont need to go too hard: 100 pushups and squats with pullups every other day, plus jump rope 5-6 days a week for 15 min is the best protocol. For me, at least. I came to this after my own experience with experimenting. Oh yeas, sometimes I incorporate kettlebells into my routine 😅. And don't forget stretching and mobility. Thank you, jump rope dudes. Salut from Kazakhstan 🎉

    1 - watch tutorial videos
    2 - start slow / be patient
    3 - use heavier ropes
4 - Don't jump rope on concrete, try a mat
5 - use weighted ropes, instead of weighted handle ropes
6 - bring elbows in while jumping rope
    7 - keep hydrated
8 - don't jump rope while lifting weights (do it separately)
9 - work on developing your flow before doing tricks (skate example)
    10 - nothing (?)

Two more things I think are very useful :
    1) Jump in front of a mirror sometimes, say every other day. Helps to correct your form.
    2) Try to tape your jumping and watch it in slow motion. Again it helps to correct your form.
#1 I've done very often. #2 still have to buy a Cam Tripod and organize the space to do it.

I was glad to hear you say that jumping rope is frustrating. I used to jump rope all the time as a kid. When I started jumping a few years ago i expected it to be like riding a bike; just jump, on and go. But it wasn't. In fact it was so frustrating for my husband and I that we really hated it for the first year or two. We would try to jump for a few days or so and then just hate it and quit for a while. We did that for about two years. We have finally gotten to the point where jumping is our main exercise. Even though we still aren't great at it we finally like it. 🙂

When you suggest a 1/2 lb rope for beginners, do you mean the rope itself is 1/2 lb? Or the handles + the rope add to 1/2 lb? I'm seeing plenty of options on Amazon for 1/2 lb ropes - but for most of them, the rope itself is closer to 1/4 lb, making the whole package 1/2 lb. Just want to make sure I'm getting the right thing to start, thanks for the advice.

I need an advice. I don’t live in a house with much space. Just an Appartement and the height of the ceiling is 2,5 m. I am 1,54 m tall. So I wonder if I could jump without a rope. So I can also jump during wintertime or if it’s raining.

    • @JumpRopeDudes
      @JumpRopeDudes  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Sure! If it's your long term exercise plan you might want to get the ropeless by crossrope, not only does it provide many of the same benefits, but it will feel so much like a real rope that if/when you do jump with a real rope you won't feel like a beginner! If you want to learn more about the ropeless: th-cam.com/video/YdpIcaA7jy8/w-d-xo.html Hope this helps!

@@JumpRopeDudes thank you 🙏 I want to do it longterm. Of course it’ll make much more fun with a rope but well… apartments in Germany are small but expensive. No garage. No space. Autumn with a lot of rain and winter will start soon. 😮‍💨

    Key Takeaways:
    - Watch TH-cam tutorials to learn proper jumping rope form and fundamentals early on
    - Start slow and be patient when learning - it can be frustrating at first before you build up the skill
    - Use heavier ropes (0.25-0.5 lbs) to better feel the rope and match your footwork
    - Avoid jumping on concrete to preserve the ropes
    - Opt for weighted ropes rather than weighted handles
    - Bring your elbows in and keep your hands closer to your hips for better form
    - Stay hydrated during intense jump rope workouts
    - Do jump rope and weight lifting separately, not combined in the same workout
    - Focus on developing your flow and rhythm before learning tricks
    - Appreciate the journey and process of learning jump rope - don't change anything about the experience

Rope with weight is good, well, my handles have weight in them, not much but enough that i can tell and its made it nicer to jump with.
Edit: i realize you dont like weighted handled ones, but obviously i got it before this.
It helps more than not having the weight there, at the very least.

If you’re not specifically into intermittent fasting, I’d recommend having a quality pre workout meal about 1.5 hours prior. Even if it’s just a protein smoothie or whatever.
I used to jumprope fasted. But when I started having a smoothie beforehand, the quality of my workouts went through the roof. WAY more energy for the workouts and I can recover far faster too. No longer feel like I’ve been hit by train afterwards lol.
