I watched this movie at a drive-in theater on the roof of my parents car. My dad would put a blanket down and my brother and I would lay up there. One of my favorite childhood memories.
I was 5 when this movie was released. Was down visiting my oldest Aunt in a town we didn’t live in, my youngest Aunt who was 13 and my oldest cousin was 6, we all got together on a bus to go to the local mall that had a theater in it to see this movie. On way to mall we were not sure if we were on the correct bus so they sent me up to ask the driver and make sure this bus was going to the mall. It was and we did see the movie. I don’t remember how we got back to my oldest aunt’s house.
Remember a time in Grade School, there was a movie night with this. Right behind the old radio shack, and they had a lot of pizza and had this movie playing there outside. It was probably 2010, and it was an awesome time because its such a classic movie
Fun fact Erik. My mother grew up in Astoria when this movie was being filmed she got to be an extra in the shot on the beach and it’s actually in the movie.
Amazing how much a young Aston and Brolin look like actual brothers. Great casting. It’s truly amazing how much this ridiculous pirate fantasy has stood the test of time.
Because it’s archetypal. The Hero’s journey. The descent into the deep dark cave, get the gold, rescue the girl and save the town from the devouring Dragon. It’s all in there. 👍

This movie was the anthem of my childhood. I was 12 when it debuted. As a 50 year old Gen X'er I can watch this movie anytime and it still gets me. Thank you so much for diving deeper into this classic! ❤
@soundguydon Absolutely! Since you're a Goonies fan, have you watched the more modern movie Super 8 or the Netflix series Stranger Things? Both would never have happened if not for Goonies in my opinion.
I was about 9 when this movie came out in a tiny twin screen theater on a rainy afternoon visiting my grandma in Sanford, Florida. And I REALLY identified with mouth about taking my wishes back😂❤ it is a well written, superbly acted scene. Feldman does not get enough credit for just his raw talent. Whatever anyone may not like about him, they cannot question his acting talent.🕶️🖤✨
As an 80's kid, this was one of my favorite movies growing up, and still holds a special place in my heart. I can't tell you how many times I wished I was a Goonie, to be able to go on adventures and come out with a pirate's treasure.
This movie is such an important part of my childhood. The first time I saw it was when my family was on a road trip when I was 11. It was the dead of night and all my other siblings were asleep (except for my older sister) while my parents were driving. My sister and I were in the back of the car covered in blankets watching it. We laughed so hard when Mouth was translating instructions for Rosalita. Though we did try to quite down since my other siblings were sleeping. Now every time my sister and I see each other we quote the movie! I had so much fun and it is one of my favorite memories. I am a massive 80’s fan and this was around the time when I was really getting into the era. I was already in love with the music from the 80’s what with growing up listening to it and delving deeper into it around the time I saw the movie. I even tried to style my hair like Mouth. My dad always likes to tell me how when he was a kid he and his friends were literally like the Goonies in which they actually all rode their bikes to go see it for the first time. This movie is such a big part of my childhood and I love it so much. Every time now I go on a trip I make sure to watch this movie. (Also kind of random question, but has anyone noticed that the actor who plays Troy in this movie also plays in the Jessie’s Girl music video? I could be wrong though.)
Greatest movie of all time. It's got everything: adventure, comedy, drama, romance... I was worried it wouldn't hold up watching it as an adult, but I still adore it.
As a kid we rented the vhs so much that the folks who owned the video store eventually told my parents we could keep it. Love your breakdowns of these classics!
NGL, had tears in my eyes by the time you got to 18:57. Just such an incredible movie, my sister and I grew up watching it, and is still a family favourite 30 something years later. You know a movie is special when quotes become part of the family vernacular, and "Hey you guys" from Sloth is something we regularly quote to each other.
One thing I noticed when watching Goonies years ago that I couldn't believe: In one shot there's a calendar on the wall (I believe it's when the kids are in the kitchen and Chunk says "God, I'm depressed" after Troy's father leaves), and the calendar is dated October 26, 1985, which is the same date that Marty goes back to 1955 in Back to the Future. Also, Mrs. Walsh was played by Mary Ellen Trainor, Robert Zemeckis's wife at the time, who also played one of the 2015 police officers in Back to the Future Part II.
@@palmsquad4 I noticed it as a kid in the early nineties before TH-cam existed, and I think other videos corroborated what I had assumed at the time was just wishful thinking.
How grateful and proud i am that i grew up in a generation that could handle an opening scene of a kids movie that featured a character faking a suicide. I honestly pitty kids today. They have very, very rough lives ahead of them!
This is still one of my favorite movies ever! It ignited my desire for wonder through visual storytelling. Side note: certain televised airings actually showed the octopus scene and I always died laughing at it dance-flailing away! Loving these deep dives - on to (finally) watch The Fablemans!
This was the first movie I remember renting from the video store. My parents were so excited to show it to us. It’s amazing how many of Spielberg’s movies were the background to my childhood.
I got my 6 year old daughter to watch this movie, she loves it and now she runs around saying "Rocky Road" nonstop. Now she wants to build a "Pirate Fort" and put the TV inside to watch it again. It's freaking awesome. I can't wait to watch all the best classic movies with her.
This movie is very special to me because when I was about 10 my group of friends and me were obsessed with the 80s/70s/90s we loved everything about it we loved thinking of living in a time without much technology and just hanging out with friends and playing arcade games for example instead of playing on PlayStations we played pac man and donkey Kong and we loved rock music so much we even had a band and one of the key things that started that love of the 80s/90s/70s was this movie the goonies every time we had a sleepover we always used to watch old movies but our favorite was the goonies we loved it so much because it was just the story of a group friends hanging out and finding treasure whithout any phones or social media and that why this film will always have a special place in my heart and I still continue to wish that sometimes I wish I would have grown up in the 80s because it reminds me of a simpler time in which you could just hang out with your friends and have fun without caring about anything
From one Erik to another...I Love your content sooo much! The Goonies has and will ALWAYS be 1of my top 5 favorite movies of all time! And the Easter eggs you've explained has got me wanting to rewatch it all over again. Keep up the Great work E ❤❤❤
@@DeepDiveNR I was right, this was a fantastic video! I didn't know they actually had to battle an octopus in a deleted scene, I thought Data was just making that up in the end for fun!
As a person of color who grew up in the 1980s, “Data” is iconic. In both Temple Of Doom and Goonies. What kid didn’t want to go on treasure hunting adventures with Indiana Jones or their neighborhood friends? And the fact that he is not just a stereotype or a sidekick, but an actual hero with real stunt work in both films in so friggin’ awesome. We love him!
I think it'd be fun to bring everyone back for some sort of a reunion to Astoria and then have them decide that they're going to go scuba diving to find the pirate ship. Now that they're all much older, it'd be along the lines of a mid-life crisis movie where they want to relive their youth by going on "one last adventure". I'm not a writer so I don't know how you'd make it fun with different twists and turns, but having them finally recover the treasure would be awesome. It'd also be incredible to see all of the cast together again.
Sadly, I don’t feel any writers have the freedom to write like this anymore….like they did in the 80s and early 90s. I like your idea a lot. Let’s say I love what it could have been
My friend and I sometimes refer to whether or not to “ride Troy’s bucket,” which has so much more connotation than just giving up or throwing in the towel. It means you are aware that this is your time, this inflection point in your life, and you have to decide whether to accept defeat and abandon the path, or persevere instead. And if you don’t ride Troy’s bucket, you continue your path with renewed vigor, confident that you have committed to your choice. I love that when we tell our other friends that it’s a Goonies reference, they instantly understand the meaning.
It's so hilarious that Chunk is like, "You are going to live with me now Sloth" .... lol, Doesn't ask his parents or anything. It's not even big deal... Well of course you can have this mutated human that barely speaks English and live with us 😅 These kinds of movies back then had some really silly and funny moments. I remember seeing this in the theaters so many times.
I have very fond memories of the Goonies. Perhaps even wishful thinking of a spiritual connection to being a Goonie! Thank you Eric and deep dive team. A must rematch movie with the whole family this summer and experiencing all the feels again!
For the love of One Eyed Willy PLEASE let this be the end of the adventure. We don't need a Part II or a remake or a reimagining, or a prequel, or a crossover with old actors. It's done and the story was set off to sea with The Inferno. We forget the things from the past are so endeared to us because we enjoyed them in our youth and they became a special part of it. We don't need the next adventure because we were supposed to go make our own.
One of my all time favorite films. So much heart, plus I have been obsessed by pirates and treasure since I was 4 or 5 years old! Spielberg for the win...again! What a fun series Erik, thanks! ☺👍
When chunk catches up with the Fratellis on the side of the road, watch the side view mirror as chunk is dragged away. Jake Fratelli is heard singing while in the mirror, You can see him taking a drag on his cigarette. He can sing and smoke at the same time
My favorite movie from my childhood. I actually planned a birthday trip to visit Astoria and the filming locations of The Goonies and have been back several times.
Brolin revealed the blunder during an Ask Me Anything session yesterday on Reddit. “They didn’t show us the ship that was being built, which would now be CGI I’m sure, so this was long enough ago that everything was practical (which made things much more fun & fantastical),” he said. “So it was on a stage, the stage was a massive pool with a practical 110 foot boat built in it. And they backed us up into the stage, into the water, had the camera set up so that we could have an ‘organic’ reaction. “I came up out of the water, turned around, we all came up out of the water, I turned around and said ‘Holy sh*t!’ which ruined the whole take. And the surprise. “So we had to resort to acting in the end.”
Thank you very much for the video. I learned way more about the movie. I saw the movie when I was 9 in the theater and has been my favorite movie of all time.
This movie came out when I was a kid, I liked it, probably watched it ten times, but it did not hold a place in my heart. Thank you Erik Voss and the Deep Dive team for strengthening my emotional connection, I need to watch this again.
When this came out when I was a kid we didn't even have a vhs-player at home, we had to rent a moviebox and could only keep it for a day before we had to return it, so naturally me and my brother watched the movie 5 times before we had to return the thing just in time for the video store to close. Fond memories!
Thank you so much for doing these videos... they remind me and support just how pivotal and truly special the movies of my childhood really were! It's one thing to say that when you're a kid a pirate movie like the Goonies would be appealing to any kid, but the themes of community and perseverance and survival were on full display in Goonies... themes that would later shape this adult and even to this day think of Goonies as not just a classic but a masterpiece of adventure and rights of passage ;)
When I was in 3rd grade, this came out on video. I watched it once per week for at least a year. Over the summer, my friends and I watched it usually once per day every day or every other day. No matter which friends house we ended up at, everyone owned it. I've probably seen this movie north of 150 times in my life! My friends and I used to have it completed memorized, and I still remember quite a bit 40 years later.
Yes!! The one movie I'd love to see a modern sequel with the surviving cast. Not a remake, I'm getting tired of our iconic childhood films being butchered.
@@rockero1313 I think a sequel with the age of the original actors would turn out more like "The Hangover" lol ;-) Seriously though, The Goonies is one of my all-time favorites. I loved it then & love it now: Of course now I see it through the lens(es) of a 50-something guy, and for me it just totally gets me in the 80's nostalgia feels :)
I just saw this last week accompanied by the Grand Rapids Symphony. It was incredible and I got to share the experience with my daughter. I adore this movie.
This was the first live-action movie I remember watching and enjoying. My sister and I watched it while we were sleeping over at my cousin's house. Her husband picked it; spot on pick.
When I lived in Portland I went to Astoria to see the house from down the street. Tons of signs to not go up the street. Had a giant blue tarp to try to block photos. The docks by the sea lions really give a great photo opportunity to see the house.
Wow I love this! I have been trying to my damndest to dive into the world of writing lately, and Goonies (thanks to my amazing brother who grew up loving this movie) is such an inspiration. Thanks for doing these :)
Erik, that could be an interesting sequel, the grown up kids trying to find the pirate ship to get ALL the “rich stuff”! To save something important in their current lives, like they did for the Goon Docks.
GREAT BREAKDOWN ERIK ! Thank you for this . (Btw huge fan of NRS and your coverage all these years) This ,by far , is my favorite movie of all time (I’m aging myself a bit 😅) Little Tid bid: the deleted scene with cassette player and the octupus had a song playing by The Goon squad (name of a freestyle/80s pop dance group created by producer Arthur baker specifically for the film ) entitled “eight arms to hold you” - that’s why it’s on the official soundtrack seemingly randomly - which became a hit on its own even tho it didn’t make it in to the movie .
Watching your Deep Dives take me back, not just to the movie, but to the FIRST time I saw it. You breathe new life into them, make me appreciate them on a deeper level, and give me the same chills as that long ago first viewing. It may be out of left Feldman, but possibly The Lost Boys for a Deep Dive?
I love this movie. Fun fact; a friend of mine was given the nickname Chunk due to The Goonies and now, 35yrs later, that is still the name pretty much everyone calls him.
As a child of the 80s this whole month has been an amazing walk though my childhood. "HEY YOU GUYS!" was such a staple of pool parties and birthday parties 100% because of this movie. It was probably also the cause of quite a few broken bones as kids stupidly jumped off of stuff.
MY MAN, MR VOSS!!! You're such an inspiraton! When I was young, I made spoof Siskel and Ebert videos...Most of them look like the ones you make now, without the cool editing! LOL Anyway, I think your breakdowns are super cool and I hope to have a channel like yours, in the future
A. Sharp and B flat. I watched this movie before I became a musician and so I didn't realize at the time that those were the same note. Good catch on that Voss!
Another fun detail, at 18:02, when Sloth opens his shirt revealing the Superman T-shirt underneath, we hear the Superman theme from the movie Superman by John Williams.
At the end, Data spoke in Cantonese, “Wow, this thing is really strong”. It meant a lot growing up in the US to hear Ke Huy Quan speak my native language in Spielberg films.
Not exactly audio commentary - but I like what they did on the (standard) DVD with the cast and director watching and giving their thoughts on Goonies (I'm surprised more DVDs didn't do this method than just the standard audio commentary)
I watched this movie at a drive-in theater on the roof of my parents car. My dad would put a blanket down and my brother and I would lay up there. One of my favorite childhood memories.

When this came out when I was a kid we didn't even have a vhs-player at home, we had to rent a moviebox and could only keep it for a day before we had to return it, so naturally me and my brother watched the movie 5 times before we had to return the thing just in time for the video store to close. Fond memories!
I've been waiting for a video like this for a loooong time! Thanks Eric
Amazing stuff. Ive seen Goonies a hundred times and new a lot but you still taught me many new things. Love your channel so much
Thank you so much for doing these videos... they remind me and support just how pivotal and truly special the movies of my childhood really were!
This movie is still my favorite 80s kid movie. Absolutely amazing
Thank you for this video. Parts I've heard before, but this was a fun trip down memory lane with new information and energy.
One of my favourite YT accounts, keep up the great work Erik!! We need more films like The Goonies.
Ah, this reminds me why I have always loved this movie. One of the first times I went to see a film more than once as a kid! Good times...
Outstanding. This has been the best video from this channel I have seen.
I have seen this so many times, but never noticed any of these details, thank you!
Yes!!
The one movie I'd love to see a modern sequel with the surviving cast. Not a remake, I'm getting tired of our iconic childhood films being butchered.
I always thought a proper sequel would be about the Original (with the same actors) Goonies' kids, going on some kind of adventure by themselves.
They og characters would be sidelined for a more diverse younger cast. 😮
The Goonies meets The Big Chill?
@@slktool 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@rockero1313 I think a sequel with the age of the original actors would turn out more like "The Hangover" lol ;-) Seriously though, The Goonies is one of my all-time favorites. I loved it then & love it now: Of course now I see it through the lens(es) of a 50-something guy, and for me it just totally gets me in the 80's nostalgia feels :)
Goonies is one of my all time favorite movies. I'm the same age as them. All my friends and I wanted to be just like them.
God i love this channel voss is the boss when it come to breaking down films keep it up deep dive love from uk ❤ .
Great job to all who helped making this! 👏
I just saw this last week accompanied by the Grand Rapids Symphony. It was incredible and I got to share the experience with my daughter. I adore this movie.
OMG I would LOVE to see this with a live symphony!
@@RodneshaGreen It really was incredible. I believe next year they are also doing Black Panther as well so that should be pretty interesting.
This was the first live-action movie I remember watching and enjoying. My sister and I watched it while we were sleeping over at my cousin's house. Her husband picked it; spot on pick.
This was my favorite film as a kid.
So many good memories.
When I lived in Portland I went to Astoria to see the house from down the street. Tons of signs to not go up the street. Had a giant blue tarp to try to block photos. The docks by the sea lions really give a great photo opportunity to see the house.
No cash sampled the goodies for their song "a better tomorrow". Always gives me the tingles when it comes up in rotation.
Wow I love this! I have been trying to my damndest to dive into the world of writing lately, and Goonies (thanks to my amazing brother who grew up loving this movie) is such an inspiration. Thanks for doing these :)
Goodies is such a great movie. It gave me so much imagination as a kid. I still watch it at least once a year.
Fun fact: I've never seen the Goonies. Maybe I should.
You definitely should it’s good even to this day
You absolutely should if you like anything adventure/action and pirates
My all time favorite childhood movie! Goonies never say die!!!
Erik, that could be an interesting sequel, the grown up kids trying to find the pirate ship to get ALL the “rich stuff”! To save something important in their current lives, like they did for the Goon Docks.
Sean Austin is my favorite actor in The Goonies, Lord of the Rings and Encino Man.
I loved this movie when I was younger great work the Deep Dive
@@DeepDiveNR I love the channel and also the New Rockstars
GREAT BREAKDOWN ERIK ! Thank you for this . (Btw huge fan of NRS and your coverage all these years) This ,by far , is my favorite movie of all time (I’m aging myself a bit 😅)
Little Tid bid: the deleted scene with cassette player and the octupus had a song playing by The Goon squad (name of a freestyle/80s pop dance group created by producer Arthur baker specifically for the film ) entitled “eight arms to hold you” - that’s why it’s on the official soundtrack seemingly randomly - which became a hit on its own even tho it didn’t make it in to the movie .
Ahhh the nostalgia! I still love this movie. Just reminds me of my siblings and I watching and loving the chaotic scenes! 😂
I knew most of this, as I still have the novel. Signed by Sean Astin.
As a child of the 80s this whole month has been an amazing walk though my childhood. "HEY YOU GUYS!" was such a staple of pool parties and birthday parties 100% because of this movie. It was probably also the cause of quite a few broken bones as kids stupidly jumped off of stuff.
Thank you for this deep dive Erik!
Great video! Love this content! Also, 15:04 sloth calls the sheriff? Lol...
THANK YOUUUUUUU!!!
One of my favorites. I love how dark it is.
A. Sharp and B flat.
I watched this movie before I became a musician and so I didn't realize at the time that those were the same note.
Good catch on that Voss!
I loved the electric company reference. Watched that as a young kid all the time and it happened to be my introduction to Spider-Man…
Such a fun video. Keep it up!!
another amazing deep dive !!
One of my most cherished childhood movies. Superman and Goonies were on repeat. Basically, Richard Donner was the greatest.
12:00...
"It's a Stiff!"
The Goonies is still fun to watch now in 2023. And I remember the Cindy Lauper Goonies song.
Oh! MY NOSTALGIA!
This was so fun! Thanks.
Not exactly audio commentary - but I like what they did on the (standard) DVD with the cast and director watching and giving their thoughts on Goonies (I'm surprised more DVDs didn't do this method than just the standard audio commentary)
