I'm still have a hard time accepting this, we finally found a Tom Petty song we love? My one daughter watching silence of the lambs with me and my wife her first time seeing that. She was maybe 15. We all know this movie is intense but Tori was mature. One part the girl who is kidnapped who ends up in the house in the well well before she gets kidnapped she's driving and singing Tom's American Girl. My daughter stops the DVD and goes who's singing this,it's great. First time she heard that but she knew , like we all did. More than I can say for these 2 guys. They are pretenders. Sure some they never heard. But. TP. NAH don't believe it. Unless they were Amish

Tom Pettys explanation for "Refugee" is someone who jumps from one relationship to another, never feeling at ease.. Always searching for love and acceptance, even amid abuse and alienation. He has words of wisdom in his songs.

Refugee is still my favorite Tom Petty song just because I love it musically, but also, it's the first one that really resonated with me. It came out when I was in high school and I had one of those ubiquitous clock radios that you could set the alarm to wake you up with whatever radio station you set it to. So sometimes I would set it to pop music stations that I mostly hated because that actually did a better job at waking me up, but for some reason, I had it set to a favorite rock station, and I came up out of my dreams very groggy and sleepy to this song. And it immediately wormed its way into my consciousness and I have loved it so much ever since. I went out and bought the Damn The Torpedos Album the very next day.

At the risk that Alex will hate it, “You Got Lucky” is ESSENTIAL among Petty’s early 80s output. I happen to think Petty transitioned his sound extremely well to 80s productions…not unlike ZZ Top’s transition but a bit less commercial. You have to do this one.

I might have mentioned this to you, or someone else, I like John Mellencamp's music now more than I ever did before, and I'm way older than these guys. When you listen to more and more, and you become familiar with the background of an artist, song, or processes involved in making music happen, you get a better appreciation for it. You start to look for things you've missed, and sometimes you also go back and hear a song you once liked and it doesn't sound the same. Their ears are getting more finely tuned.
