this is from tom and the heartbreakers 3rd album, DAMN THE TORPEDOES, and it put them on the map. they had some success with earlier hits "breakdown", "american girl", and "listen to her heart" but DAMN was the LP that brought them to the national forefront. it is my favourite album of theirs and most every song is great!
"don't do me like that", "here comes my girl", "louisiana rain", "even the losers" - all bangers!
my most favourite song of tom's was from these sessions but didn't make it to the album. "casa dega" was the b-side of "don't do me like that" on 45 single. it's moody, plaintive, evocative, and drips of a mystical place and time - FANTASTIC ❤

What first drew me to Tom Petty, as a 15yo,was the Angst in his voice in This song!
    I was hooked till now..as a 58yo.
Also learning what the man stood for, the utmost respect went his way. A true beautiful human being ❤
I heard of Tom's passing whilst at work in the early morning here in Australia. I somehow managed to keep it out of my head for the rest of the day. When I was finally at home I went for a walk around my backyard and then let myself come to the realisation... I then fell apart 💔
Living in West Australia, which is known as the Wildflower State... He certainly belongs amongst The Wildflowers 🌻🌸🌼

You should do "American Girl", Petty wrote it in the style of one of his greatest influences, the Byrds, specifically Roger McGuinn. It was recorded on the 4th of July, 1976 and was on Petty's first album. When McGuinn first heard it he said "When did I write that song?" and the following year he covered it much to Petty's delight. Tom Petty was very famous not long after. It was often his encore song when playing live and it was the last song Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ever played. I had heard McGuinn's version first and that lead me to Tom Petty's music in 1977. He is truly one of the great American songwriters and will be long remembered.

Not even close. Tons of takes on most of the songs. And as TP was going through bankruptcy to get out of a bad record deal, they had to record surreptitiously and then their roadie would take the tapes and hide them so, if asked in court, Tom could legitimately say he didn't know where the tapes were.

"Refugee," a timeless rock gem birthed amidst the artistic synergy of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, defies categorization as it seamlessly weaves together defiant lyrics and Campbell's driving guitar riffs. Released in 1980 as part of the legendary album "Damn the Torpedoes," this anthem of resilience finds its power in the captivating juxtaposition of upbeat energy and emotionally charged storytelling.
An intriguing fact behind the creation of "Refugee" lies in its humble origins-a chance jam session between Petty and Campbell. Initially discarded by the band, the demo resurfaced, engendering a fierce debate over the music mix. Fortunately, Petty's unwavering spirit prevailed, giving birth to a song that would push boundaries and scale the heights of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 15.
Petty once revealed that many of his compositions delve into personal relationships, and "Refugee" is no exception. Yet, the track transcends the personal, digging deep into the essence of tenacity and bravery. It refuses to let the listener succumb to pain and hardship, urging all to defy their circumstances and not merely exist, but thrive. Unleashing a rebellious spirit that continues to reverberate across generations, the resonant refrain, "We don't have to live like a refugee," serves as a rallying cry and a reminder of our enduring capability to rise above our circumstances.
"Refugee" remains an indelible testament to Petty's songwriting genius, forever etched in rock 'n roll's hallowed hallways. Its magnetic pull and timeless resonance are a testament to its enduring appeal, showcasing the band's penchant for crafting anthems that strike a chord within the human spirit.

Teen Angst is exactly the vibe/emotion Tom and The Heartbreakers cashed in on. LEARNING TO FLY, YOU WRECK ME, and SWINGIN' are a few I think you still need to hear (official videos, of course). Comedian/actor Garry Shandling and Tom were good friends and even neighbors. Garry passed away about a year before Tom, but managed to interview him at Tom's Malibu home & studio, and Tom eulogized Garry at his funeral (two guys you'd never figure to have much in common but really enjoyed each other) - but that 20 min. interview can be found on You Tube and would be good for your personal edification, and catch a glimpse of what Tom likened to Two Old Farmers on Acid. Tom was a regular guest on Garry's TV show "The Larry Sanders Show". I generally have to watch that interview at least once or twice a year when I'm really missing my brother (and check out the link to a clip of the last episode where Tom mixes it up with Clint Black - Hilarious).

"Here Comes My Girl" has always been my favourite Petty song, but Refugee was my first introduction to him. I remember buying this 45 record and wearing it out when this song first came out. LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers! Thanks for another GREAT reaction and stroll down memory lane Jay & Amber!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I have been waiting for this reaction since I started watching your channel over a year ago. This album "Damn the Torpedos" might have been the album that put TP and the Heartbreakers in front of the world. The entire album is wonderful and full of fantastic lyrics, killer riffs and the full might of the Heartbreakers. And hey, there aren't many guitars that sound better (or look better) than a Rickenbacher 12 string.

Great song by Tom and great guitar work by the underrated Mike Campbell. Don't Do Me Like That from the same album, Damn The Torpedoes, is probably his best vibe song but it's too short always leaving me wanting more.

I was stationed in Korea in the '80s and my favorite bar in the 'ville has a DJ playing records. I bought him a beer and asked for this song and every time I walked in that bar for my one-year tour he played this song immediately.
I won a lot of bets when I took new troops to that bar and told them I could guess the next song to be played.

Amber, I think you would identify with his song "Southern Accents." (Live version) Also, on a song called "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around' (Official Video) he duets with another one of your favorites-Stevie Nicks.

So sad I won't have the chance to see these guys in person just pumping this stuff out live, but man, what a catalogue and legacy Tom's left the world to enjoy, think and talk about for years to come. Tragic loss to the music world in particular but to the world as a whole with his passing. This stuff won't ever die, just great to see people like your excellent selves discovering all these incredible artists and bringing your own audience to the party.

I love Tom Petty! When I was 13 back in 1978, I sent a letter to their fan site and they sent me back a Heartbreaker necklace! I still have it :) Then I got to see them live in El Paso, TX. It was so amazing to finally be able to see them live!! Great reaction video!

Thank you for picking this up. This album (Damn The Torpedoes) occupies a large part of my college soundtrack. Fast-forward 37 years, and I take my son to see TP in Boston in August of 2017, during the Heartbreakers' 40th Year Anniversary Tour. So blessed we got to see him once before he passed... just a few months later. Heartbreaking indeed. (If I may, I recommend testing out his "solo" album Wildflowers. And a little bit after that was an occasionally played "Swingin'" track from the Echo album. Very interesting story. I know you'll like it!)

This is one of Petty's coolest rockin songs. You MUST play my favorite by him, "You Wreck Me", featuring Howie Epstein on the guitar. It is top-notch rock and roll as Tom tells another story while the instrumental blend is the BEST!

Tom surely has that unique voice. It’s a pleasure to listen to him sing. I missed my chance when he played at the Jazz Festival the year he passed away. I was invited to go, but didn’t and I regret t to this day. He is surely missed. I’ve never heard a bad thing said about him at any time. He was a down to earth cool guy from what I’ve been told by people who have seen him live. 💯💕🕊✌️

You are correct - this was out 79-80, and "Don't Come Around Here No More" (the Alice in Wonderland video) was from 1985.
You still gotta get to "American Girl", which was featured in Silence of the Lambs, when the senator's daughter was about to be kidnapped by Buffalo Bill. I can never hear that song now without thinking of that point in the movie! It was another early song of his that I think you'd like, as well as "Don't Do Me Like That." Those all came from the mid to late 70s when he was just really getting started!

This song solidly takes me back to the Coast Guard as we are entering the estuary at Kodiak, Alaska. This song cemented itself in my memory back then because of its intensity and how it gelled so well with the intensity of the island and the cold, gray skies and silky clouds, wet mountains and the Kodiak bears we listened to off in the distance as we explored the wild there.
    Such an outstanding song.

I can’t even suggest a song from Petty, cus you can’t go wrong with any of his songs. I’ve said it before and I’ll never get tired of saying it.
