When I was in middle school, we did not have a bell to end classes. Instead, this song, or "Black Betty" would start playing . . . we'd leave the class and move to our next class listening to the music. When the song was over, the next class began. It was a small piece of heaven in every day!

Simmons cites the song's opening section - see Quote Box to the right - as "my childhood imaginings of the South from reading Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer" while the lyrics subsequent to the first chorus draw on his actual experience of New Orleans: "going down to the French Quarter as often as possible and going into the clubs and listening to Dixieland":[3] the lyric Well if it rains, I don't care/ Don't make no difference to me/ Just take that street car that's goin' uptown was jotted down by Simmons while riding through the University District on the St. Charles Streetcar Line en route to the Garden District in Uptown New Orleans to do laundry: "the sun was shining while it was pouring rain the way it does down there sometimes. And the lyrics just came to me there [on the streetcar]."
Like I told you a little while back: You WILL find yourself randomly humming "that funky Dixieland" groove for the rest of the day!! Next from the Doobies needs to be Jesus Is Just Alright, and Taking It To the Street--whichever order; they're both bangers.

Just keep goin'. Love watching you guys discover stuff.
I agree, great choices. But, "Can't you see" is one of my all time favorites!! Every time I catch it on satellite radio, I just have to crank it up. Drives my family crazy!!
Finally a song I've urged them to experience. Agree that "Without You" should be next. And then, for more finger-pickin' goodness, go back and listen to the title track to "Toulouse Street."
I'm 69 years old, and to hear you guys discovering the Doobie Brothers is amazing. this is the best music ever produced compared most of what's out there today, and I say most, not all.
69 in July and love this reaction! I have a better appreciation for it now for sure. It’s like hearing it all over again and headphones make a big difference. 😊👍🏻
It's funny you said they are the Steely Dan of this vibe. The two bands routinely used each others studio musicians. Before Michael Macdonald was lead singer for Doobie Brothers he was a background singer for Steely Dan. Listen to the song, Peg. You can't mistake his voice in the background.
I've told them about Hatchet a couple of times. I thought they would enjoy some bangers from some fellow Floridians. Whiskey Man should be first, it has everything they like in a song.
This comment reminds me of 70's radio and one mainstay I remember them not hitting yet is Jackie Blue/Ozark Mountain Daredevils. There's still a lot of Southern Rock on the vine.
The 60s and 70s, what a flood of incredible music! So glad I grew up in those times. The unfortunate thing is there are many extremely talented musicians around today, but they can't make money as a band. They hang out on TH-cam and do their thing. The industry badly needs to figure out how musicians can monetize their work in this digital age. I believe great bands will reappear if that happens.
We used to cut 1st hour, drive out to the country, smoke a doobie, listen to this song over and over (in the days of 8 tracks when you had to rewind) then get donuts on the way back to school. Great memories! LOL
Didn't see anyone else mention it: That was Mr. Patrick Simmons on the lead vocal. He was a more country-based player than Tom Johnston, the main lead singer at that point in the band's history.
Man. They did some good stuff with Michael McDonald on keys and lead vocals., saw them with all three guys singing lead, Tom, Patrick and Michael. They were all awesome and sell outs ...
Love the reactions guys.. I think the big difference between the current music (which I think is hyper controlled and mostly made for money) is that the old classic songs are real stories, journeys and emotions.. there's a very human quality to them. That's why we still listen and marvel at them. I was in the music business for 30 years all thru the 70's and eighties and nineties, a GOLDEN era my friends... Keep listening to these wonderful crafted songs.. they will make YOUR music that much better. All the best!
There is something strangely satisfying about watching you both digging a song that we have listened to for many years. The interesting thing about this song is that it was originally a B-side song. It was never intended to be released as a single but eventually ended up going #1. I've suggested this before but seeing your reaction to Black Water makes me want to see you react to Lynyrd Skynyrd's "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew". This is another really cool swampy blues tune. Has a great slide guitar part in it as well.
They did a great “isolation” video of this a little over a month ago....one of the best out there...complete with a fan singalong at the end....somehow I made the final cut!
Thanks for mentioning this. I went and checked it out after reading your comment. The video montage at the end was fun...nice job. For anyone else who might want to hear it... th-cam.com/video/4ZLY2ht9iBM/w-d-xo.html
He sure did. Had a mind blown moment. My high school choir did this. That was a challenging yet so fun song to work up and do. The audience reaction fit the song. Great memory!
"Who else sings catfish in a rock song?" Well, Jimi Hendrix did Catfish Blues. Not sure you'd call it a "rock song" because it's definitely blues. Then again, it IS Hendrix, so... yeah... I knew the harmonies in this tune would get you. You really should try the kings of harmony: Crosby, Stills, and Nash - Suite:Judy Blue Eyes, followed by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young - Carry On. Those harmonies will melt the whisky glass in your hand.
Lyndon Brown This has always been my favorite by DB. It’s so sad and I still listen from time to time. Such a shame record execs felt the line “the radio is bringing me down) would affect airplay. They could have played it nonstop every day and I’d still love it.
It’s Pat Simmons singing this. Watching it in concert is amazing with the crowd participating. Pat explained he plays the acoustic fingerpicking Hawaiian style (slack key), detuning the guitar. It certainly helped that they were in Pearl Harbor Naval Station at the time.
I remember as a kid all of this music on regular play on the radio, going to school it played on the bus, delivering newspapers with a small transistor radio tied to the handlebars.
I love watching your faces and the astonishment at what you're hearing. Big smiles here! Can you imagine growing up in this era with SO much awesome music from so many bands and artists? I can. It was amazing, and I so enjoy sharing these discoveries with you guys for the first time. Cheers!
@@jeffreywilmot3798 right? I was lucky. The youngest of four during the mid sixties and seventies. I got a really wide range of exposure and they already had the albums or 45's or 8-track tapes. 😎
I was hanging out in Waikiki in a Park in 2012 During the Super Moon hoping to get a picture of it over Diamond Head. I Just got the perfect picture of it right over the top and I heard someone start to jam this song....... Then I realized it was Them LIVE at the Waikiki Shell in a private concert. I started full on sprint across the park when I reached the fence line of the Shell. I stashed my 40 in my cargo pocket and began to climb. Fucking Magical Night. It was one of their last Performances.
Watching your reaction makes me feel really glad I grew up in the 70’s. To me Black Water was just one of the songs on the radio I liked. Seeing it through your eyes makes me appreciate it more.
'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes' was a startling song when it came out. There's really nothing like it, with brilliant acoustic guitar and vocal harmonies. Play the longer album cut, please!
Almost 50 years ago - and these guys were totally FUNKY! How can that be, you might ask. WE (I was there) started all of this shit - I love it, love it.
Grew up on this song. I have been on the Tennessee River dead of summer, with boats tied up floating and partying at night. With EVERYONE singing this. And they're all feeling the whiskey and still get all the words right. Eveb the chorus.Yep. It's the river rat anthem. It is a masterpiece you guys♡
SO glad you guys did this one .. especially on a Friday! S tier song for sure! I've heard this song I don't know how many times, and never get sick of it .. definitely sang along! Cheers, fellas! Have a great weekend
"Who else sings 'catfish' in a rock song?" Exactly! Thanks for pointing out the true achievements of this song! And thanks for having me think anew--with fresh eyes--about a tune I've been singing along with since I was a wee kid.
Oh my! Inna bar in the French Qtr of N.O.called Maxwell's Plum all night, corner of Burgundy and Conti. Leave to walk straight due east the few blocks to the mighty Mississippi to watch the sun come up and the moon go down. Sitting on the rocks on the river bank watching the black water carrying barges and ships on down the line. Gives me chills to this day. The only place every single cell in my body relaxes. Whatta song! Was a super hit back in the day. Saw the Doobies open, along with Van Halen, for the Stones in the Stones' World Wide Tour in 1978. So, yeah guys - the Doobies were awesome. Now, if you'd like to try this one: Listen to Tom Johnston solo (he was a founding member of the Doobies) do "King of Savannah Nights." There is a really great version of this one live on TH-cam. I can listen to that one over and over. Thanks for your appreciation of such fabulous music!! P.S. Another former member of the Doobies, Michael McDonald, has had an excellent solo career. My fave is "Ya Mo Be There." If you don't know it - check it out!!!
I remember when Blackwater first aired. It defined the whole summer. Sure there were other huge hits: Born To Run, Bohemian Rhapsody, Wish Your Were Here, to name a few, but, this song counter-balanced everything, and it aired A LOT. Didn't matter what came on before or after, this song set the mood. What an incredible vibe.
Glad you guys did this one. The sound of my childhood as I grew up on bayous in Louisiana. You should also try Taking It To The Streets and China Grove by the Doobies. You won’t be disappointed. I knew y’all would dig this song. Great review as Black Water is definitely S tier.
Love The Doobie Brothers. My best friend (RIP) and I joined the Navy together in 1984. We went to the on-base bar and played this on the jukebox. By the end of the song, we had bought the whole bar a pitcher of beer. When it got to the final lyrics the whole bar was singing with us. The manager of the bar threatened to close the bar for the night if we didn't stop. So, we said to hell with you and stood up on our chairs and continued to lead the patrons in singing for another 20 minutes. Good times and great memories! Peace
I'm an old man sitting here trapped at home in Columbus and I get to watch to young guys listening to the music of my youth and finding out how good it was. Love your channel guys. Love it.
Old crone, bored to bits with my apartment. This channel and a couple others are keeping me amused. These two are much fun. And I still love this song 45 years later. ✌🏽
So here's the thing with the Doobies, their great songs and production. The man that basically discovered the Doobies and produced the vast majority of their albums is the legendary producer Ted Templeman. I just read his incredible autobiography titled: Ted Templeman: a Platinum Producer's Life in Music. Guys and everyone else, if you love the Doobies, this is an absolute f-in read! Trust me, I couldn't put it down. He talks about the formation of the band, how he recorded them in the studio, along with his legendary engineer partner, Donn Landee. These guys also recorded most of the Van Halen albums as well as the legendary Montrose debut album. That's one reason why the Doobie songs sound so good. What a great band, some of the best tunes ever.....college outdoor parties by the lake with kegs, smoke, girls, frisbees and the Doobies...yeah! 😎 🍺
"Black Water" is my favorite song by the Dobbies without Michael McDonald! "What A Fool Believes" after Michael. Fantastic song you should do! They are soooooo good! Just have that Funk down!!! Get up and dance. Or road trip hoping you don't get busted speeding! Lol. So glad you love this one. It's worth the ride, trip, and journey they take you on!
th-cam.com/video/TaKD1Vdarnw/w-d-xo.html Rare video of live studio recording of "King Harvest." Not one of their top hits, but a great intro to what The Band was all about.
If you ever react to the Band. This song reminds me of some of their stuff and their drummer Levon Helm had an amazing voice Up On Cripple Creek The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
Don't forget "Chest Fever" (best organ into ever) and To Kingdom Come (best guitar solo). Roger Waters called The Band "The second most influential band in Rock and Roll."
"What a Fool Believes" is still my favorite by the Doobie Bros. I heard them in concert alongside Steely Dan back in 2018 and damn they were good. Amazing show.
"Mississippi Queen" "Rocky Mountain Way" "American Pie, and anything from Badfinger had the same effect on me. The early 70's were so much more than just the Stones and Zeppelin.
This song would come on while I was driving my work truck, which had no left speaker, so listening to the vocals only from the right had a hilarious effect while they’re doing call and response.
"I'll f--k up a square dance" that's the best line I've heard in a long fk'n time! Sorry, you didn't copyright it! I'm stealing that one! That made my day, You guys are gradually gaining my full respect(not that you need it). I've never paid for shit on the internet, but I can see it coming. THANK YOU!
For me, I like all of the Doobie Brothers and their incarnations. This one was brought to by my all-time favourite Doobie, Patrick Simmons. He was always there, consistently delivering awesome, heartfelt performances. Doing it to this day. Nice reaction guys🤘
I absolutely adore you guys! It’s so cute watching you jaws hit the floor listing to music I grew up with! It’s like hearing it for the very first time, all over again!❤️
I saw them at this show January 25, 1973 Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (with Rare Earth who you should definitely check out, they had the best opening bands) They were even better live at this point. They opened for Rare Earth. Phenomenal!! So good that when Rare Earth came out on stage the crowd booed and screamed for Doobies. Rare Earth was devastated and grabbed they're guitars and walked off stage. The whole Doobie Brothers band came out on stage and reamed the crowd out big time!! They said Rare Earth was one of the best bands they ever toured with and they owed alot to them, so we should show them some respect. You could hear people in the crowd saying what assholes they'd been. Everyone applauded. Rare Earth came back out to wild cheers and blew everyone away!! The kicker was the encore. The Doobie Brothers came out with Rare Earth and jammed for over an hour. Early rock classics and free form jam. Smok'in Hot!!!! One of my all-time favorite shows.
This song... what we cranked the car radio for on a road trip or a trip to the mall back in the day...it didn't matter where you were going, this song needed to happen along the way to make any trip worth taking. We'd pack the car with our gang, crank the radio, and we'd all take vocal parts. Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo damn good.
The guys got together, in isolation, from different locations and played and recorded this great tune. The vid is wonderful and you should check it out. They STILL sound great!
Another classic. One of the coolest grove tunes that is in their catalog. Love the acoustics and blended voices. Another suggestion would be South City Midnight Lady or Another’s Park Another Sunday. Keep on rockin!
I was a sophomore in high school when this came out. I had an accounting class and there was a pretty girl named Marla in the class. One day I was working on a project with her in class and she started softly singing the chorus to this song. She mesmerized me. Sadly she passed away at a young age. Whenever I hear this song I always smile and think of Marla.
@@michellowe8627 Michael McDonald did not ruin the Doobie Bro. He was brought in by Skunk Baxter after lead singer Tom Johnson became ill & had to stop touring. Michael just took them in a more blusey jazz direction, of which catapulted them in sales & awards. I love both their incarnations, as do many of their fans.
You guys are just a joy to watch getting into songs you haven't heard. You also have great musical knowledge & insight. Keep on rocking. Oh...and your whisky decanter needs topping up!!

It’s New Orleans distilled in audio form.
Doug Kirk “Simmons would complete "Black Water" during a subsequent Doobie Brothers' sojourn in New Orleans; a lifelong aficionado of Delta blues, Simmons had first visited New Orleans for a 1971 Doobie Brothers gig: "When I got down there it was everything I had hoped it would be...The way of life and vibe really connected with me and the roots of my music." I agree, great choices. But, "Can't you see" is one of my all time favorites!! Every time I catch it on satellite radio, I just have to crank it up. Drives my family crazy!!
"The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"
This they HAVE to do.
Good list, they have done Midnight Rider BTW, check it out.
Yes, please. To all of the above.
Without You next? One of their heaviest songs and it rocks. Jesus Is Just Alright is another great track by them.
Without You with the surprise ending. Awesome. Jesus, he's my friend.
Finally a song I've urged them to experience. Agree that "Without You" should be next. And then, for more finger-pickin' goodness, go back and listen to the title track to "Toulouse Street."
Yeah! Do JESUS IS JUST ALRIGHT!
Without You next, totally agree.
Absolutely! Without You! Like traveling to the other end of the universe from Black Water!
Molly Hatchet 'Flirtin With Disaster' (studio version)! Talk about classic Southern Rock bangers!
I've told them about Hatchet a couple of times. I thought they would enjoy some bangers from some fellow Floridians. Whiskey Man should be first, it has everything they like in a song.
Yes can't wait for that one!!
Yes!!!!!!
Review some Molly Hatchet!
I’ve been trying to get them to do ‘Flirtin’ With Disaster’ for a year!
Regular old radio fare for us children of the 60s 70s...Jealous yet?
This comment reminds me of 70's radio and one mainstay I remember them not hitting yet is Jackie Blue/Ozark Mountain Daredevils. There's still a lot of Southern Rock on the vine.
Were we spoiled or what? The 70’s was just one good song after another. That’s why classic rock radio stations are still thriving.
Black Oak Arkansas. Yes, I'm a child of the 70's
@@barriekelley2241 The 60's through the 80's were excellent.
Seriously, I got chills watching y’all hearing this beauty for the first time. Love the Classics! Got to hear, Jesus is alright.
This is a song for listening to on the porch on a lazy hot summer day, with a tall cold drink.
We used to cut 1st hour, drive out to the country, smoke a doobie, listen to this song over and over (in the days of 8 tracks when you had to rewind) then get donuts on the way back to school. Great memories! LOL
Whenever this song starts to play I still get chills 50 years later. Beautiful, dreamy and happy.
Didn't see anyone else mention it: That was Mr. Patrick Simmons on the lead vocal. He was a more country-based player than Tom Johnston, the main lead singer at that point in the band's history.
Yes! and at least it wasn't Michael McDonald.
Ralph Cooper You hit the nail on the head here! The 60s and 70s had the BEST music EVER! 🥰
@@KAH5371 Hi Kim.. yep I agree. There's always good music to be found in every era, but in this era, it's lost in a sea of mediocrity !
My sentiments EXACTLY!!!
The A side? "Another Park, Another Sunday", another banger (went to #32 on its own)
Curtis slo is a definite must review!
If you were at a party in the 1970’s when this song came on EVERYBODY stopped and sang at the top of their lungs!!
This whole song feels like a warm hug from a big beautiful southern granny.

It was the best of the Covid era!
Saw the video that was fantastic! And congrats on making the final cut! 😃

Something a little different from The Doobies. Went to #1 for them. Huge song. Those Harmonies! Yeah!😎🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
"the Steely Dan of their vibe".
You nailed it.
He sure did. Had a mind blown moment.
My high school choir did this. That was a challenging yet so fun song to work up and do. The audience reaction fit the song. Great memory!
Although, I don't think they have nearly as many good songs as the Dan
Skunk Baxter played guitar for both....great sound.
@@HarleysHammocks Michael McDonald also sang for both.
Another 'country-rock' hit from the 70s is "Let Your Love Flow' by the Bellamy Brothers. It's so positve & uplifting.
I'm 58 years old. I grew up with this music. I'm having a blast watching your reaction to this tune. Genuine!
"It sounds like my nana's garden." Love it.
Love Gma! This song made Everyone love wind chimes!
"Back then" most wind chimes were glass and sounded just like that ... I like the gong/pipe type too but the glass ones are 50's kids memories
I caught the hell outta catfish as a kid in the 60s-70s...I LOVED it and thought the same..catfish in a rocknroll song =)
What a great take. CSN's Suite: Judy Blue Eyes(about Judy Collins) is one of my favorite songs with regard to harmonies.
Followed by Everybody I Love You, Wooden Ships.
Not to leave out my vote for the best harmony song (with alliteration, no less) of all time: 'Helplessly Hoping'.
@@sebradfield yeah... they need some CSNY
“Another Park, Another Sunday”. Probably their most beautiful song...oozes summertime.
Totally agree.
Was originally the B side of the Blackwater 45....and yes, it is a very underrated song....my favorite Doobie Brothers song....
Several years ago I saw both the Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan in concert together. The Doobie Brothers performed first…it was unbelievable!
2 of my favorites..I'm jealous you got to see them together
I remember as a kid all of this music on regular play on the radio, going to school it played on the bus, delivering newspapers with a small transistor radio tied to the handlebars.
I sure miss album oriented rock stations.
It’s funny you mention Steely Dan. Guitarist Skunk Baxter was in both bands! 🙂
I love watching your faces and the astonishment at what you're hearing. Big smiles here! Can you imagine growing up in this era with SO much awesome music from so many bands and artists? I can. It was amazing, and I so enjoy sharing these discoveries with you guys for the first time. Cheers!
Love to watch this generation listen and enjoy the music we grew up on
There was so much great music it was tough to decide, while flipping through the LPs, which ones you would buy with the limited funds in your pocket.
@@jeffreywilmot3798 right? I was lucky. The youngest of four during the mid sixties and seventies. I got a really wide range of exposure and they already had the albums or 45's or 8-track tapes. 😎
Good song for sure. I'd still love to see you do Green Grass and High Tides by The Outlaws. A long version please.
YESSSSSSSS!!!!
HELL YESSSSSSSSSS!
That and I’m still hoping for Molly Hatchet “Flirtin’ with Disaster”
My band oped for the Outlaws is the early 90s. Great guys, and one of the loudest bands we opened for. Lol
I kind of think the album version - I seem to recall they weren't too impressed with Free Bird, or thought it was excessive.
Imagine growing up with all of these. We were ridiculously blessed.
Absolutely!!!!!
They’re touring now with Tom and Mike. And they sound just as great. Saw them two years ago in Mountain View. Their 50th anniversary tour.
"Who else sings catfish in a rock song", epic statement!
Vinyl Records jethro Tull. Lol ..
Tony Joe White would!!!!
Janis Joplin. :)
Elton John...in "Dixie Lily". Mentions catfish...

Watching your reaction makes me feel really glad I grew up in the 70’s. To me Black Water was just one of the songs on the radio I liked. Seeing it through your eyes makes me appreciate it more.
You expressed my feeling perfectly!
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young- Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
Can’t believe you guys haven’t yet heard Suite Judy Glue Eyes???
Gotta do some CSN with or without Young
@@HenryInHawaii And also some Neil Young with or without CSN.
Chicago and Love the One You’re With are two more great CSNY song to check out
'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes' was a startling song when it came out. There's really nothing like it, with brilliant acoustic guitar and vocal harmonies. Play the longer album cut, please!
So grateful to have lived through this generation.🎉
Almost 50 years ago - and these guys were totally FUNKY! How can that be, you might ask. WE (I was there) started all of this shit - I love it, love it.
Grew up on this song. I have been on the Tennessee River dead of summer, with boats tied up floating and partying at night. With EVERYONE singing this. And they're all feeling the whiskey and still get all the words right. Eveb the chorus.Yep. It's the river rat anthem. It is a masterpiece you guys♡
Sounds fun but I have a fear of river sharks, lol. But no really.
Pat would love hearing this comment. ❤
Three Dog Night ~ SHAMBALA! Studio version please!
"The Show Must Go On". Love it... them.
Be sure to watch their quarantine version. They still got it!!
Just because I haven't seen anyone suggest it yet, It Keeps You Runnin' by the Doobies.
And yeah, this is the ultimate chillax song!
This tune turns into a massive sing along at every Doobies live show. Great stuff.

"What a Fool Believes" is still my favorite by the Doobie Bros. I heard them in concert alongside Steely Dan back in 2018 and damn they were good. Amazing show.
Yes. Michael McDonald has such a cool voice.
Very first song I remember loving.
"Mississippi Queen" "Rocky Mountain Way" "American Pie, and anything from Badfinger had the same effect on me. The early 70's were so much more than just the Stones and Zeppelin.
That look you guys have when the instruments stop and they bust out the harmonies...yeah that's the look i had when i heard it decades ago. Love it
I've been waiting for you to do this little beauty. So much feel good in this song!
Doobie Brothers are always fantastic! Next song should be One of their early bangers like Jesus is Just Alright or Rocking Down the Highway!
I’ve never seen Andy with his mouth open this much during a song before, lol. Glad you enjoyed it, guys, one of my personal favorites.
"Who sings catfish in a rock song" just had me rolling on the floor!!!!

I saw them at this show January 25, 1973 Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (with Rare Earth who you should definitely check out, they had the best opening bands)
They were even better live at this point.

The whole Stampede album is great.
They did a quarantine video of this, everyone playing from their home...it’s on you tube and it’s outstanding
Thanks for mentioning - I just watched and it was FANTASTIC!
This is the one I keep coming back to over and over. "I forgot drums were a thing!" and "I'll fuck up a square dance!" HA! Love it!
