I've always loved howTom talks through the verses as if he's talking to a friend about his life. Doing so makes the melody-driven chorus so much more effective.

Petty makes the song just by the way he sings "then she looks me in the EEEEEEYYYYYYYEEEEEE"

This is just good songwriting. The verse is frenetic - there's so much going on in the narrator's head; so much noise; but then the chorus comes in (his girl enters the picture) and everything gets smooth and nice (musically too), which lets him see the world as an OK place again. It feels timeless because that weird duality is not something that changes. Ever. "...the fight for love and glory" dontcha know.

Take a run at "Don't do me like that" from this same album. So many high points in that cut, different players stepping forward. "The Waiting", in my opinion, the song features the quintessential T.P. & The Heartbreakers sound. The sound of their first 5 albums. Once you get into the 6th albums, while still solid, you get other outside influences taking hold like Dave Stewart of "Eurythmics" and Jeff Lynn of E.L.O. These first 5 albums are pure. Again, in my opinion.

Must hit songs from 2nd album (You're Gonna Get It): When The Time Comes, Listen To Her Heart, I Need To Know, Too Much Ain't Enough...all bangers (Listen To Her Heart is a classic, maybe Petty's best). BTW: Petty's last album, Hypnotic Eye, just as good as his first (and the only Petty/Heartbreakers album to debut at #1). Also full of bangers: Fault Lines, Forgotten Man, Power Drunk, All You Can Carry.

From late 70’s to the mid 90’s, Petty was one of the most consistent artists of that era. Every album produced classic hits. I saw him in 1991, great concert.

To me, this song is underrated, and the vocals just make it. You feel what he is going through with his emoting. Others to consider, that I don't believe you have covered but seem underrated- I Won't Back Down and Running Down a Dream. Of course, is one of his biggest hits still needs covered- Don't Come Around Here No More.

Time to graduate to the Petty included supergroup Traveling Wilbury’s. Petty, Dylan, Jeff Lynne (ELO), Roy Orbison, and Mr. George Harrison (Fab Four). Hit it hard!!!

I'd forgotten how great this song is. So cool. I love how the music is ominous and the singer is feeling down, then the chords and music change to something happy and beautiful when his girl comes along. I would have gone S. Its something of a masterpiece.

Awesome song choice! The album “Damn the Torpedoes” was pivotal in that TP really started showing what he could do vocally. From the album that followed, “Hard Promises,” check out “A Woman in Love (It’s Not Me).” It’s the perfect marriage of Tom Petty’s angst-ridden vocals and Mike Campbell’s searing guitar riffs!

TP's career started about halfway through my high school years. i followed him all the way until his untimely death, and now i get to see a resurgence in his music just a few years later. there's something very comforting in that.

Thank the gods you finally reacted to "Here Comes My Girl"!! Not that you've noticed, but I've been yelling about it for a year. LOL! A true rock classic. The video of the song is well worth the watch.
To me, the jangly guitar is reminiscent of and a tip of the hat to the Byrds. Tom's lyrics about the working class man feeling like he's never getting anywhere is reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen's many songs of the same genre. Love 'em both!!

Tom Petty, we miss you so much! His death was a dagger to his fans hearts. But what a legacy he left us. So many killer tunes. Fantastic song writer and story teller. A true American Rock icon. Keep exploring his tunes guys. This album is a classic, every tune is awesome. His best album my opinion is Wildflowers....a masterpiece!!
