Such a shame how his career got ruined by drugs, and even greater shame the rest of the band wouldn’t let him come back after he got clean. I swear you two are the only reviewers who don’t stop the song midway for some inane comment.
It’s one of the main things that keeps bringing me back. Along with the musical insights and the sheer joy you both have in discovering new music.
Part of the reason other reactors pause in the songs is because they are reacting to videos, rather than just audio -- and with videos, if you just play it straight through, the video will get blocked.
@@DJHolte virtually all the ones I’ve watched in the past month have been purely audio. They just can’t keep their mouths shut for more than 30 seconds. It’s probably my biggest pet hate.
@@CycolacFan So much of the effect of a song is lost when it's stopped every 10-30 seconds. Music is meant to be listened to all at once. Pausing it so often to add in commentary is like splitting up a movie by watching ten minutes a day over the course of a week and a half. You aren't able to immerse yourself in the media.
MOST I confront about pausing say they interrupt the song to keep it from getting blocked. That doesn't work. If the algorithms detect 3 seconds of Beatles then it will get blocked. Led Zeppelin tracks are strict too.
Other reaction hosts I visit often and who do not pause include "BroAction" and "justJP". Give them a look.

Saw a documentary a while back where they said "Liar" was recorded in a gas station bathroom because the vocalist really liked the acoustics for the song.
There is an old live version of this from a television show that has an extended opening where each of the vocalists take turns singing acapella , leading in to the rest of the song - well worth checking out .

Unfortunately, talent wasn't quite all they were loaded with, and it caused the breakup of one of the best bands I've ever seen, or heard. I saw them in the early '70's and Chuck Negron was so high that he didn't even know where he was. It was sad to witness such a senseless waste of God-given talent! ☮✌

All the singers were great but to me Cory Wells was the best by far.
I never get tired of watching the 1975 live version, it showcases each one's voice so well and then they speed it up and just have a blast with it, it's a hoot. Wish you could react to that one too.
There is a live performance of "Eli"s Coming" on TH-cam that features an extended version of the opening vocals. Each of their three main vocalsits take a turn and each adds their touch and tries to hold the notes a little longer than the last. It is fantastic -- wish I could have been in the audience.

Everyone needs to go out and watch this now if they haven't seen it. BEST song by them. The extended opening showcasing their individual vocals is fantastic - I ripped it to mp3, even though it isn't exactly CD quality, because it's so good. I'm continually amazed how reaction videos continually and skillfully AVOID this wonderful performance!

The people who grew up listening to 3DN are so glad you enjoy their songs. You have a lot more to go thru as well. We were so blessed to have a multitude of groups like 3DN to listen to growing up! "Easy to be Hard" and "Out in the Country" are great songs too.

You need to see this live in their live version to truly appreciate and see their vocal talents as individual vocalists. It blows the studio version away.
They were a hell of a live band. I got to see them in the 70s and it was an excellent show (opened by The Kingsman, of "Louie, Louie" fame). I will never forget being totally mesmerized by the keyboard player, who they introduced as The Wizard, in Merlin the Magician robes. He had a five or ten minute showcase of Hammond prowess that has stuck with me through the decades.

I saw this group as the opening act for the Rolling Stones in 1969 at Forum in Los Angeles.....and they got 3 standing ovations and played another hour before the Rolling Stones came out!!!!!

I'm a friend of Chuck Negron's, and he and Danny had the most amazing vocal range maybe ever! And when you add Cory to the mix, that's what made them the best three part harmony. It's too bad you didn't play the live version. It's one of the most amazing performances you'll ever witness. It's like they took you to church! That's just one of the reasons they outsold every performer and group from 1969 to 1974. And this choice of a song written by the great Laura Nyro was perfect for them. Another great song they did was the Harry Nilsson penned tune "One" which was sung solo by Chuck in 1969. He really showcased his amazing vocal range.

A song I had forgotten by Three Dog Night was "One Man Band" from the "Naturally" album. It only charted to about #19 in the U.S. but I remember hearing it on the radio a lot. Once you get past the top-tier suggestions like "One" and "Liar", it would be a good cut to check out.

You should definitely hear their version of Otis Redding's Try a Little Tenderness. These guys were so great. All three singers had awesome voices but you need to hear the soul in Corey Wells voice on Sam Cooke's A Change is Gonna Come. Sooo Good!!!

"Out In The Country" is a good one for a change of pace. I never knew that was Three Dog Night until many years later!
Talking about blowing opening acts off the stage: Three Dog Night opened for Steppenwolf on a tour in 1969 that was being recorded for a live Steppenwolf album. When the tour played the LA Forum, Three Dog Night's set was also recorded, and was so good that it was released as a live album (Captured Live At The Forum) months before Steppenwolf's live album came out - and it was awarded a gold record.
Back in a the day we kind of took them for granted. They always had a top hit out and we just expected that level of talent all the time.
Check out "Liar" and "Out in the Country". Also try a much later cut from the early 80's called "It's a Jungle Out There".

The organ and piano work well together. I know people dis 3 Dog Night because they didn't write their songs, but they were MASTERFUL interpreters of the songs they sang. I agree, a musician is a musician whether they wrote their own songs or not.
Unlike most "cover bands", they mostly covered songs that had failed to do well on the charts--basically, all-but-unknown songs--and then they adapted the songs to suit their own sound and tap into the zeitgeist of popular music. Usually creating a monster hit in the process.

This is crazy cuz I just recently did a deep dive into Laura Nyro after watching a Stoned Soul Picnic video, she was a great talent.

"Eli's Coming" is definitely one of Three Dog Night's great songs but I like all of them. Some other favorites are "One", "Just An Old fashioned Love Song", "Try A Little Tenderness", "Easy To Be Hard", "The Show Must Go On", "Black & White", "Out In The Country", "Liar" etc.

Laura Nyro was such a great song writer. Guy's if you get a chance check her "Stoney End" , either her own version , Barbara Streisand's version or any of the other covers out there of that great song.
If they ever do check out Barbra Streisand (I say it's OK if they do and OK if they don't), "Stoney End" is the song of hers that I recommend that they start with.

Three Dog Night was the opener for Steppenwolf when they ( TDN) were starting out. After a few shoes, Steppenwolf refused to follow them and actually asked to go on first.
Told ya that was the banger! Just wonderful guys. As mentioned previously, there are many more you’d love. One and Easy To Be Hard are one’s I’d especially like to see.
Yes! Easy To Be Hard from the musical Hair is a must; vocally and lyrically powerful and as relevant today as it was in the '60s.

Having checked out your previous TDN reviews, you've probably now covered their most "banger" tunes. You can't go wrong listening to their softer stuff though. "Liar" and "One" are incredible. Personal favorites of mine not already mentioned or in your reaction catalog include "Pieces of April" and "Old Fashioned Love Song".

Hardly anyone mentions Pieces of April. It's a favorite of mine.
Other 3DN bangers are Liar and Fire Eater, a little known tune from the Naturally album. On the other side, Easy To Be Hard, Out in the Country and Pieces of April are beautiful songs.
This hits on all cylinders. You got the late great Cory Wells with the beautiful and powerful lead, Danny Hutton on the walk walk parts and Chuck Negron on the high parts and all three on perfect harmonies. Plus they had a great band, with this featuring their awesome keyboards. I think I bruised my legs from doing thigh piano back in the day! 😂

Opinions are something everybody has, but Laura Nyro's recording of this song is far superior to TDN. Her soul is totally exposed with her incredible vocal. One of the best performances of the era.
They charted 21 straight releases on the top 40 in the seventies. Best vocals of the era.

One must understand that when the song is stopped . . . for any reason . . . the continuity of the song is broken. Every song ever made is meant to be heard from beginning to ending WITH OUT STOPPING THE SOUNDS OF THE SONG! But you guys are doing it correctly!

When they were starting out, they opened for Steppenwolf. That only lasted a few shows. Steppenwolf said, yeah, we're not going on after TDN. So, they switched spots and never looked back.

You may want to check out their live video of " Old Fashion Love Song" from 1975. Shows their true stage presence and their love of entertaining the audience. Also, a humorous twist at the end which is truly hilarious. You will love it.
Said it before and just have to repeat it: the focus always seems to be on the three singers and yes, they were very good! But the four men in the band behind them were really, really good!
Liar is the next song by Three Dog Night you should check out. It's bit of an outlier in their catalogue in that it's a dark and brooding number with a hard hitting chorus. It features Danny Hutton on lead vocals.
I listened with an open mind.. a spirited, fun recording - not a patch on Laura Nyro's original though. I feel like her version sounds even more intense and unhinged than this. Check it out!
