    I feel framers are don't get enough credit, they are the backbone of every construction projects.

    Still figuring a plan for my overhead door wall. Not only is the header shot from termite damage but the top plate as well. Since breaks must be staggered this makes it a challenge to splice the new with existing top plate. Also can only get to it from one side as house has brick face on front.

    I have to replace a garage header and jack studs because of termite damage. Framing load bearing walls is a new experience for me as I'm a furniture and cabinet builder.

    How is the front of the garage base plate tied down. Or is it just tied in by the sides with the california corner?

    Is the header toe nailed in or are you using metal straps as well?

      To secure the header on the jack, I nail from the side of the jack into the header. I have a video on how to build a door opening that explains this. Check it out!

      That helps! I'll look for that video.

      No problem. And yes I do toenail the trimmers to the header as well.

    So if I’m building a 16 by 8 two car garage. What size should my header be, 16 or 18ft to provide good support?

      I have the same question as I'm converting my carport to a garage. From my research of the garage opening is 16ft then you have to go a minimum of 9 inches so the header can sit on the jack studs. So you can get an 18ft board and cut it to that size or you can frame the header opening to accept an 18ft header which is what I think imma end up doing.

      Yeah I I figured 16 9 too with double jacks and 2x6 door trim. I think I’m going LVL though which only needs an inch or two of support. How is the 2x12 sandwich working out?

    Is it one solid piece of wood? Can I drill through it to mount a light?

    • @TheExcellentLaborer
      @TheExcellentLaborer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The lvl is laminated wood. You could drill though it if you had to but check your local building codes!

  • @Duckywucky92
    @Duckywucky92 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why can’t you use 2x12s to make header?

    • @WilliamVG
      @WilliamVG 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not strong enough. Most times I seen them go with steel instead of wood. Depending on codes.

    How do you find out what size header your need for particular garage without paying hundreds of dollars to an engineer or even getting one to give you five minutes of their time I don't mind paying for their time they just never called back so I'm hoping I could just buy the right size versa-lam or loser being or whatever the hell I need for a 12 foot wide door placed evenly space two of them on a 32-foot front gabled and gambrel garage with storage second floor using trusses

    I 'was' excited to watch this video... but like all of the other videos, this one did NOT do a very good job of explaining. You shouted out rough measurements but did not describe your jack or king stud, why you had your blocking the way you did, and so forth. I have watched 6 videos so far and none of them seem to do a very good job. The only thing you had above the others is you're rough framing was present... albeit already assembled.
