He wasn't more well-known to this day than he is simply because he chose that life. He didn't care to be in the spotlight. If he could have chosen he'd be a guitar player in a band and not in the spotlight. The fact that he barely ever promoted any released albums or tours shows it's a testament to the music and he didn't care about being a famous rock 'n roll has been. He just wanted to play his music and survive off of that and there is absolutely nothing wrong with such a fantastic effortless attitude.
Great songwriter, tasteful guitarist, understated singer, but above all things JJ was sane. He stayed free of the dark machinery of music business stardom and did his unique thing.
He is regarded by his peers as one of the greatest pickers ever. Neil Young mentioned him in the same breath with Hendrix. Knopfler copied him. smooth and subtle. Wrote some of Claptons greatest hits. I do Call Me the Breeze, Lynyrd Skynyrd version in kareoke.

Just found this. I had JJ Cale's NATURALLY, one of the first LP's i bought getting home from Nam and wore it out. This fine collection brings tears of remembrance of being home again.
Saw him in concert 1975 in Munich, Germany, and it was great. He was awesome. Took a lot of stage fotos. Since this day I love his elegant, relaxed and timeless music.R.I.P. Mr. Cale

had the pleasure to have seen JJ Cale play in Dublin in around 1975. most laid back gig ever. no support act, no announcer, JJ just walked on, plugged in, sat on a stool and started played. Still remember it vividly to this day. Had never heard him before, but my love affair started then. This is a fitting tribute to the man and his music.
That is JJ Cale! ! He could get a club rocking with just himself and a guitar!I saw him at a literally underground club in Seattle,in the basement of one of the big buildings there. JJ Cale did a solo set, and it was SUCH a relief to hear JJ's songs, without a stack of Marshalls blaring behind it. JJ Cale was the best!!
Heard Tom Petty and JJ Cale sing JJ's "I want to love you baby, etc" and then listened to JJ's other songs. Truly a master musician one that I'm so glad I found. It's so amazing how so many great musicians/songwriters we never hear about but only find by accident.
I remember J J saying he could not believe when he turned 65... But we have for the rest of time J J... and we appreciate the artists that continue his legend. Thank you. ❤❤❤

The greatest musician ever. Learned about him in the 70s and i've been a great fan of him since. He did not want to be a star, just af musician in a band playing music and have a great time. And make a living of it. Respect, he could have made it to the stars, but he prefer a simpel life doing what he love. And he lived his life like he wanted to. This is such a great record. Eric Clapton organizes an homage to his favourite musician by bringing the best to cover JJ's material. Clapton, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Mark Knopfler.....a whole host of fabulous musicians to play keys, bass, percussion, drums, backup vocals and tops it all off with my two favourite living electric guitar players, Derek Trucks and John Mayer. Bumped into this guy some forty years ago and he's wowed me since, so melodic and yet so "out there" and very inventive. A true artist and foremost musician. I salute you J.J.CALE. r.i.p
I always like Eric's music. Back in the early 80's, I was in Air Force stationed in UK & met a British neighbor in RAF who was a great guitar player. We talked of musical interests & talents, & when he knew I was harmonica player, he asked if we could jam together. He was the one who turned me on to JJ Cale. I was so glad to see that Eric & JJ did an album b4 JJ left us.
JJ Cale: His haunting, laid back, intriguing riffs and rhythmic style flows like water through my soul. First saw him at Convocation Hall in Toronto. His influence still rests deep inside me. Gone but never forgotten….
I’ve been a painter and practicing artist for 42 years and there’s a synchronicity in JJ’s work .. it’s what makes true art in a masterpiece... he will live on in our hearts and minds ... god bless him ...

First time I heard of JJ Cale was when I saw song-writing credits on the Skynyrd album Second Helping for the song Call Me The Breeze and I was like 'damn this is a great song'. Then a friend pointed out that After Midnight was also written by him (I was 5 when he wrote it so I guess I can be excused for not knowing it until I heard EC's version when I was a teenager). Those two songs started me on my journey as a life long JJ fan. I had just started trying to play guitar about that time and his music (and others of course) really inspired me to learn and keep at it. I never became a great player or tried to earn a living at it but it's sure as hell fun to jam along with all the great music that the folks in this video have made. EC was right, what a great american treasure! Thank you and RIP Mr. Cale. (TP too).

Like others commenting, at age 67, I grew up listening to J J Cale and Eric Clapton from the mid 1960s. Both were incredibly creative, and naturally good for each other. Clapton said J J Cale was like an older brother to him. Their bond was deeply rooted, both in music, and sincere friendship. This is a beautiful tribute to J J Cale. Theres a lot of things one could say about JJ's career and his songwriting and guitar playing, for one I'm thankful he gave us so many beautiful songs and that in a special way he got away with being a not so well known musician and probably by his own choice to live a somewhat normal life unlike other artists that sold their souls for rock and roll he didn't so he could have more control of his life and enjoy it with his loved ones, we are thankful to Eric Clapton for appreciate JJ's work and share these recordings with us that we love and enjoy for many years to come.
To my ear...the most beautifully crafted tribute album. The playing and singing is heartfelt and superb. Every single muso is just outstanding. Thank you for making the effort. I hope to play in a band that can play these songs just like this one fine day.

I was playing in a funky little club in Nashville way back in 1979. I had a little 3 piece rock & blues band and I had my eyes closed, playing away and when I opened them, Leon Russell was nose to nose with me and says, "Whar's Nix?" meaning Don Nix. He and J.J. Cale had come to hear us. I only had a drummer and a bass player with me or I would've asked them up. Nix had just gone back to Memphis after staying with me for a couple weeks but it's a great memory in my books!!! They stayed for a set and we had conversation on break but what a night it could have been indeed!!!
this is an album I can leave on comfortably loud when I pull the Softail into a gas station or rest stop and nobody complains. they're instantly caught up in his riffs. they don't know who it is generally, the ones who do give a nod. not for my choice but in common appreciation of iconic talent he left with us.
I was introduced to JJ Cales music in 1975 with his "Really" album. It is a shame that he never received the acclaim that he so richly deserved. Thank God that Eric Clapton finally discovered him and exposed him to the world. JJ's wife Christene Lakeland was probably the best thing that ever happened to him. She always lit up when she was in his presence. They truly loved each other. She still misses him to this day. Good people. My life is richer because of them and the "Tulsa Sound." Vaughn

I was playing this one day and an old friend came bye. She immediately said WHO is this? I've missed it! I told her it was a tribute to J J Cale. In that instant she rediscovered his music and was musically transported back to a much cooler time and place! It was cool to watch!

I always like Eric's music. Back in the early 80's, I was in Air Force stationed in UK & met a British neighbor in RAF who was a great guitar player. We talked of musical interests & talents, & when he knew I was harmonica player, he asked if we could jam together. He was the one who turned me on to JJ Cale. I was so glad to see that Eric & JJ did an album b4 JJ left us.

First time I heard of JJ Cale was when I saw song-writing credits on the Skynyrd album Second Helping for the song Call Me The Breeze and I was like 'damn this is a great song'. Then a friend pointed out that After Midnight was also written by him (I was 5 when he wrote it so I guess I can be excused for not knowing it until I heard EC's version when I was a teenager). Those two songs started me on my journey as a life long JJ fan. I had just started trying to play guitar about that time and his music (and others of course) really inspired me to learn and keep at it. I never became a great player or tried to earn a living at it but it's sure as hell fun to jam along with all the great music that the folks in this video have made. EC was right, what a great american treasure! Thank you and RIP Mr. Cale. (TP too).
Each and everyone on this video is a legend, and they all share the appreciation of this great genius... as we do!

Like others commenting, at age 67, I grew up listening to J J Cale and Eric Clapton from the mid 1960s. Both were incredibly creative, and naturally good for each other. Clapton said J J Cale was like an older brother to him. Their bond was deeply rooted, both in music, and sincere friendship. This is a beautiful tribute to J J Cale. Theres a lot of things one could say about JJ's career and his songwriting and guitar playing, for one I'm thankful he gave us so many beautiful songs and that in a special way he got away with being a not so well known musician and probably by his own choice to live a somewhat normal life unlike other artists that sold their souls for rock and roll he didn't so he could have more control of his life and enjoy it with his loved ones, we are thankful to Eric Clapton for appreciate JJ's work and share these recordings with us that we love and enjoy for many years to come.

I was playing in a funky little club in Nashville way back in 1979. I had a little 3 piece rock & blues band and I had my eyes closed, playing away and when I opened them, Leon Russell was nose to nose with me and says, "Whar's Nix?" meaning Don Nix. He and J.J. Cale had come to hear us. I only had a drummer and a bass player with me or I would've asked them up. Nix had just gone back to Memphis after staying with me for a couple weeks but it's a great memory in my books!!! They stayed for a set and we had conversation on break but what a night it could have been indeed!!!

this is an album I can leave on comfortably loud when I pull the Softail into a gas station or rest stop and nobody complains. they're instantly caught up in his riffs. they don't know who it is generally, the ones who do give a nod. not for my choice but in common appreciation of iconic talent he left with us.

Wonderful album, and a memorable salute to Cale by many of his artist admirers.
First heard him at the age of 14 , I was lucky to have 5 albums given to me , from that point 36 years ago i fell in love with his music.
I was introduced to JJ Cales music in 1975 with his "Really" album. It is a shame that he never received the acclaim that he so richly deserved. Thank God that Eric Clapton finally discovered him and exposed him to the world. JJ's wife Christene Lakeland was probably the best thing that ever happened to him. She always lit up when she was in his presence. They truly loved each other. She still misses him to this day. Good people. My life is richer because of them and the "Tulsa Sound." Vaughn
JJ Cale was asked about this paradox and he said he was happy to have found the balance, and stay out of the spotlight while being able to play music his entire life

I was playing this one day and an old friend came bye. She immediately said WHO is this? I've missed it! I told her it was a tribute to J J Cale. In that instant she rediscovered his music and was musically transported back to a much cooler time and place! It was cool to watch!
