South East Asia’s Best Commuter Rail Line | Bogor Line Explained

- So what happens when you combine JR East Frequencies with Dutch Colonial Architecture?
This is a line that connects the cities of Jakarta (10 M residents), Depok (2 M residents), and Bogor (1 M residents). Being over 50 km/h, and runs about every 5-10 minutes, it's no ordinary commuter rail line and really is more like an oversized metro with too many level crossings.
Actually, your information is outdated. There were three trains both ways, however KA 4000, KA 4002, and KA 4004, which were JAKK-PSE-BKS/CKR all became KPB-PSE-BKS/CKR since 1 February 2024. Meanwhile KA 4101, KA 4109, and KA 4111 still operate as CKR/BKS-PSE-JAKK. Basically, it's a one way trip only
About your information on the intercity trains, it is Kutojaya Utara (Kutut). An economy train that if moved, would be in Pasar Senen instead of Gambir.
It came in 2019, as part of three economy trains (Jayakarta, Menoreh, dan Kutojaya Utara) that were moved (back) to the Jakarta Kota station (which originally stopped serving intercity trains in 2014) due to lack of stabling in Pasar Senen. Jayakarta in 2021 and Menoreh in 2023 have been moved back again to Pasar Senen though
Btw, as per the discourses with DJKA, there's a chance all intercities in Jakarta won't be moved to Manggarai. Thus Gambir would be more like Jatinegara, Bekasi, and Cikarang.
GMR = "Flagship" (Argo and Satwa)
MRI = Non-Flagship/Mixed/"Tektokan" (swapping the trainsets)
PSE = Economy, mainly PSO
"The bottom floor is literally the backrooms"
such a perfect line to express manggarai's bottom floor
FR... Hahahaha try come with the last train here. The low level without people gave a liminal space horror vibes 😂
With a suspicious looking FamilyMart between all the barely done construction
FR FR 🤣🤣🤣
nahhh the old one that goes underground is worse with the flooded hole beside the staircase, thank god they close that tunnel
Did not expect this high level Indonesian train content
yeah i'm really looking forward to this channel's future

As someone who grew up in Japan, it’s my dream to come to Jakarta and ride the trains from my childhood. Thanks for this great overview!
You better hurry, we just got update from the government that they going to stop importing second hand train from Japan and start buying new trains from China...
@@shindoride mantaaaaap 👍🏿
@@shindoride Buset pantesan gaya presentasinya agak mirip wkwkwkwkwkwkw, keren bang
You know you're public transportation. Great script writing in English. Really informative content. I enjoyed it, thanks for detailed info👍
To simplify,
Lower Bogor Line (JAKK - MRI): KAJJ interruptions, street foods, downtown tourist spots
Middle Bogor Line (MRI - DP): rush hour with crowd crush hazard risk journey, office & business blocks
Upper Bogor Line (DP - BOO/NMO): where the overwhelming mass of commuter workers using Bogor Line live
The Nambo Branch Line sounds a lot like the Nambu Branch Line in Japan! The length, frequency and the rolling stock used (the 205 series) are all the same too haha
Checked it out myself, the similarities are uncanny, Hama-Kawasaki station is surrounded by Factories too just like Nambo Station.
Exept they used 205-1000 for the branchline
Both line also operating passanger and freight train
I'm all for high-level Indonesian content. Keep it up! Love the humor bit too.
My first time I ride a train in my life was on this line, back in 2007. Ekonomi Non-AC class was still there. Lot of hawkers, beggars, and street musician jump into the train, heck even some of them bring a big cello into the train. Manggarai station was not as big as right now and there is still many hawkers surround Bogor station.
My first time was in 2014-2015 I think, just after the reforms so I had a mosty positive first impression of it. Clean, has AC, only problem is that it felt a bit slow.
@@shindoride The reform are indeed great. Back then no one thought commuter train will be like this now. Train in AC are considered as luxury as it was only served express service with higher price.
Ekonomi non-AC trains back then were pretty much chicken coop that run on tracks. It certainly smelled like one. But I heard it wasn't as bad as the ones in Rangkasbitung Line where literal chickens and goats were boarding the trains.
@@LV_427 Rangkasbitung Line (before get electrification) was the main hub for vendors and hawkers who live in Pandeglang and Lebak regency and trading in Kebayoran and Tanah Abang market. Many of them are selling farm product from vegetables, fruits, and even chickens and goats, so no wonder why so many passenger bring chickens and goat to the train. Now since the removal of KA Lokal Rangkasbitung the vendors mainly use truck via Toll road to deliver the farm product, although some fruits and vegetables vendors still using the Commuter train and bring their goods into the train, ofc not selling it on the train.
As a Bekasi residence I can confirm the new layout is better 👍
Mantap videonya, keep it up!
Cikini and Gondangdia has some of the best food from the food court located next to the station
Seconded
literally if I don't know what to eat for lunch or tea time I'd find myself going to either of the two stations lol
Yeah, so good that one time my mom and I literally gone from Cibinong to Cikini for a walk, only to end up just eating there and gone back 😂

Mie ayam Yanto for the win.
finally found an indo public transport channel... thank you for your service
rolled my eyes so hard after reading the title given my personal commuting experience, but end up surprisingly impressed with how well articulated and knowledgeable you are with various public transportation in the wider area
thumbs up 👍
I think the Nambo Branch line service should be completely separated from the Bogor Main Line service. I mean, the trains should only run from Nambo to Depok without continuing to Jakarta and vice versa. For the trainset, maybe it's sufficient to use 1-2 EMUs with 4 cars per set. Perhaps that would be more effective?
Yep, il choose that setup over the current one since it can provide higher frequencies
I counted that actually, from Nambo to Depok Baru, itu would be 25~31 minutes each way for one full trip. With two EMUs, like today actually, it would have a headway of 40 minutes after counting 5 minutes of stabling each in the two termini
Hmm, what do you think if the Nambo line gets shortened to Citayam? but with 15-20 minute headway.
@@shindorideCitayam doesn't have enough tracks for that to work. That's why the former Cisaat cement freight train turn around at Depok instead of Citayam
@@shindorideTrue, it only has two tracks and platforms. The shortest it could get is Depok with four tracks and two platforms, but I prefer Depok Baru which while only having three tracks and two platforms, has integration with the bus/angkot terminal.
What a nice overview of Bogor Line!! Subscribing and looking forward to other videos.
Ahh, Bogor Line... Years worth of memories were made, many songs were listened too, many candies were chewed, and many love at first sight were forgotten in here. Living in Jakarta is the best because going home arah Jakartakota is not as crowded as arah Bogor (or the reverse when going to uni/working), it can be really comfy at times too. Bogorbros, you have my sympathies.
Rangkasbitung Line next!
Bogor line/central line has special place IMHO, since it is the only line where EMU rolling stock maintenance depot (Depok) and a branch line to Nambo where electrified single track layout belongs to.
This line frequently used for post maintenance test runs from Manggarai/Depok to Bogor and vice versa, if you're lucky enough during trainspotting there you may see a Commuter Line EMU passing through instead of stopping at the platform (as a hint, the front/rear display of non-regular EMU trains would show one of the following sign: "Percobaan", "Uji Coba", "Test Run" or "Tidak Untuk Penumpang").
Also pondok china's apartment is finished now!!! It's quite cool. Still gotta cross the literal train tracks, no underpass just yet. I guess you can use the apartments if you like exercising
CONGRAGULATIONS YOU'VE JUST GAINED YOURSELF A NEW SUBSCRIBER😍😍..... This video kind of reminds me of jay foreman and The tim traveller (Which i watch daily).

Great stuff, looking forward for more content
wow, such detailed content! subscribed!
Really enjoy your explanations... Keep the great work!
Thank you
Btw also, I came from Surabaya (2nd largest city), and moved to Jakarta in 2012.
Surabaya's public transport is literally nothing compared to Jakarta, even in 2012, and even more so after Jonan tidied up the KRL starting around 2013 and 2014.
apparantly surabaya is set to have its first electrified and proper commuter line system by 2029. suroboyo bus, wara-wiri suroboyo are trying to imitate jaklingko's success tho much less succesful.
Oh yeah I am genuinely concerned with the state of transit in most Indonesian Cities, especially Surabaya and Bandung due to their size and density. Both of them should have multiple MRT lines by now... but they don't.
great effort for this video. you deserve a like
Great research and presentation! I have seen other youtube channels reviewing cities with a similar vibe to this where you insert small quips and jokes while still being informative. I love it! A few nitpick that i had were only the choice of color to highlight some routes. They're too pale, and i didn't even notice them at first. Other than that, great job, may your channel grow!
just stumbled to your channel, i like your explanations and humors xD, keep cooking!
Thank you!
Great video - someone left a comment on my video that I should check you out. Glad to see this kinda coverage on systems that you don't see much content on!
Thank you!
dude has funny delivery/ love the video man
this vid is full of roasts for the JAKK - Bogor line and also informative for the non frequent users of the JAKK - Bogor line.
ah Bogor Line, been using this line since 2014 (even though in recent years, I dont visit Bogor via KRL that often anymore). Had a lot of memories of riding this line during my University days :)
Coming to this video expecting for a rigid review of the rail line, definitely got that.
So I moved to Jakarta one year ago and I swear to god the transportation system is soooooo confusing. The KRL train line is pretty clear, no complain there but the problem lies in the connectivity especially the bus line as information on its schedule is very limited. I would love a guide on this.
When it comes to regular Transjakarta bus lines, there's no schedule. Even the transit agency just says the bus comes every 15-30 minutes for non-BRT lines. Of course in practice this could be anywhere between 0-45 minutes.
@@shindoride God. That's annoying. I can afford taxi so its not that big of a deal for me but this is frustrating.
Bring back Bogor Loop Line!!!
bring back anyer-panarukan line.
nooo, i prefer the current one!
you mentioned the pondok cina apartement construction but it's pretty much done for awhile now. surprised you didn't mention it being a TOD example for future TOD Projects being developed by KAI and their private partners acrross the network. heard they will also connect up TJ/Transjabodetabek once the apartement's vehicle access is finished
As a people from Solo that commute Yogyakarta Line frequently this is so well explain, i would to try if i has a chance to visit Jakarta in tje future....
And I should visit Yogyakarta in the future
Kutojaya Utara (North Kutojaya) is a train with route from Jakarta Kota (JAKK) station to Kutoarjo (KTJ) via Pasar Senen. dunno why it terminates at Jakarta Kota instead of Pasar Senen. Probably because Pasar Senen is pretty crowded at its departure time (8 am)
i'm fortunate enough to live in Priok so when i wanna go to my Uni in kalibata, the train is pretty much empty since the one that crowded is from Bogor, and the other way around when i wanna go home from kalibata to Priok LOL. almost never experience the horror of Bogor Line peak hours except when i wanna do a quick stop at manggarai
Very nice video, surprised to see how well integrated the Bogor Line is with BRT and other bus services at it's stations (albeit the overuse of sky bridges is a bit jarring, would've preferred the BRT shelters to be outside the stations themselves instead of having to walk a bit). Hopefully in the future the line can be equipped with express service, especially with it's fairly straight alignment and long distance. The preservation of Dutch colonial architecture at the stations is quite impressive as well.
Also, as some of the comments have pointed out, your style is very similar to RM Transit which is probably one of my personal favourite transit channels of all time, lmao
Thank you! I watch RM Transit so that explains the similar style.
My theory on why Jakarta tends to overuse skybridges is that the KRL commuterline is a very old system and Transjakarta is a very new system so there's plenty of time for things to get built around the stations making getting between the two harder.
And yes express service in the Bogor line would be great.
So, as a frequent user of this line and someone who stops at Pondok Cina Station practically every time, I would like to correct something about that station, there is an exit/entrance through an apartment building (Now with at least a fully built skeleton, shops and residential stuff meanwhile, doesn't seem to be done yet), but since several years ago and until now there are two exits/entrances which does not go through the building, both of these connects to small roads, each about the width of one car, further deducted by the stalls and online bike taxi service stopping there
Now I dare you to make a video about Bandung Raya commuter rail line.
Oh wait.. It doesn't have any! 🤪
Also the train systems of every other Indonesian city run at very low frequencies making reviewing it a pain in the rear end.
@@shindoride yeah, true. Probably the more feasible idea for the next video is Solo-Yogyakarta commuter line!
What I hate about Cawang-Cikoko is that getting to/from the third floor requires an elevator, unless you don't mind walking far to a separate manual stairs. Just give a straight stairs to/from Bus skybridge and the KRL station man.
Intercity trains used to start / end their journey at Jakarta Kota back in the day, but perhaps because the schedules for commuter trains began to rise and rise, they moved Economy / ( most ) Mixed Class trains to Pasar Senen, while First Class trains and some Mixed Class trains to Gambir.
the only intercity service that's still start / end at Jakarta Kota are the Kutojaya Utara and Jayakarta ( iirc )
From 2019, three trains (Jayakarta, Menoreh, and Kutojaya Utara) were moved to Jakarta Kota. However, Jayakarta in 2021 and Menoreh in 2023 have been moved back again to Pasar Senen. So only Kutut is left
They have two closed stations one is Pondok Rajeg the other one is gunung putri station
can you do a review of public transportation in tangerang
Would love to see the new capital railway system review!
fun to watch
I think you forgot explain Cilebut, but nice channel
7:50 can cnfirm you still have to do this
Going to Kota Tua from Depok (where i used to live) is a hella good experience, i just watch the crowd in Manggarai from a far while i was just being chill on the train.
Anyway, talking about the traffic app, it would be interesting to talk about Trafi, it was very useful for its live tracking for Transjakarta bus and KRL. But now it's gone and the new one isn't that good.
Yep, unfortunately by the time I started using public transport regularly, Trafi is gone so I never tried it.
Imagine if there's a line connecting Nambo to Cikarang..
And to Parung Panjang
From my observation Bogor terminus generates the most passenger in the whole line. At least 10% of passengers begin and end their journey on the line here. I deduce it is due to being a complete terminus unlike Kota which has alternative stations to choose from like stations of Cikarang line, so it has a very wide catchment radius as far as Dramaga in the west and Ciawi in the southeast.
This station also has the largest parking facility than any other in the system. While the local transit of buses and angkots are available they are not very reliable or even accessible to most people so most they still get to the station by private means.
Lack of weather protection is very ironic since Bogor is known as the Rain City but you have to be prepared for an aquatic onslaught if you arrived on a bad day. Definitely prepare an umbrella.
As much as i would love to ride a train to my campus, unfortunately i live in area where its better off to just ride a bike and using the Bogor main road rather than catching train due to distance to a station. Good video btw. Keep up with the English, perhaps practice long enough and you can do western accent like natural.
CIKARANG LINE NEXTT!!
I will make Cikarang line after Rangkasbitung line since I promised that first.
Depok resident, new layout W
bogor mentioned🎉
Jakarta commuter line in the nutshell :
> Ancol - Kota lines : nobody use it, you literally can sleep in the bench.
> Bogor - Kota Lines : HELL ! (Literally you get packed like a sardines in a can)
> Bekasi / Cikarang - Kota / Manggarai Lines = less crowded compare to Bogor - Kota, most people use it if they want to go to Pasar Senen.
Jujur aja bersyukur pas dlu SMA jalurnya masih langsung Bekasi-Jakarta Kota www (sekolah di sekitar Juanda)
Skrg giliran udh kerja, yg Bekasi ke daerah Sudirman, pas banget 😅
please review the rangkasbitung line!! they're low key fascinating
He will make Rangkasbitung line video Soon
Yep though its still a couple of weeks before I upload it.
I gotta say for pasar Minggu: crossing the street there is an absolute NIGHTMARE if it weren't for the skybridge. Especially in the early mornings(←nyampe 5:30 biasanya). Even tho I'm grateful for the skybridge, it's pretty inconvenient sometimes. There's also an older, shabbier skybridge near there but it's quite the walk and doesn't connect to the pasar.
do you know Indonesia or dutch east indies is the first asian country which used electrified train in Asia..since 1924, a century ago, bogor lined or buitenzorg was opened in 1930...when Japan, china and korea just used steam... they had already used electrified train... Batavia (Jakarta) and Bogor Buitenzorg were modern city on that era
Ok, there's no single mention about connection to Blok M. Why???
I did mention that pasar minggu is the meeting point of several non-BRT lines.
But yeah I could have mentioned that 2 of them (6U, 6T) go to Blok M.
But then again the focus here is the Bogor line, not Transjakarta.
My friend was going to bogor but boarded the wrong training and fall asleep, she got isekai'd to Nambo
When are they going to install an express service?
I don't know, but considering how crowded the line is, maybe it's best to focus on getting longer trains and increasing frequencies first.
Aahh... the good ol' Bogor Line. Or as I like to call it "The Spartan Line".
Only ppl who have rusty nails for breakfast can survive the daily commute on this line.
love it
Bang tanya rekomendasi transport apa yg worth it dan murah dri surabaya ke bekasi ? 👀
Wah jujur kurang tahu, gw keluar Jabodetabek biasanya pake mobil.
yeah saikyo sen in SEA
I live in Bekasi and I prefer the old layout, no need to transit at Manggarai if you want to work at Central Jakarta...
Yep, though I guess it depends where your office is in Central Jakarta.
If its near Sudirman station, the new one is better, if its in Cikini/Gondangdia/Juanda, old one better
5 past 4 is 04:05, not the other way around
As a Gunung Putri person who is closer to Nambo than Bogor City, I don't agree if Nambo is no longer used or has to be transited first, because it really slows people down. Those who want to work from here to Jakarta because this transportation is very helpful and makes it easier for people here to leave
True, maybe we should keep the existing direct trains to Jakarta Kota, but add extra service that stop in maybe Depok Baru. So people can still choose the infrequent direct train but those who only want to go to Depok or are willing to transit don't need to wait as long.
So lets hope KAI commuter gets more trains
Awalny liat judul lngsung kepincut pengen komen "waa da best apaan, gw tipa hari mati kaki mulu turun kereta" then realize klo komplain gw cma sebatas efek jam padet aja😅
After to Cikarang, next KAI Commuterline to Cikampek ( Karawang ). Good. ///// 👍👍
My Favourite Indonesian transit channel just posted, LETS GOOOOO
Jogja line is somewhat between pre historic passenger and tourist
Jogja line is like USA/Canada Commuter Rail (without the double decker trains)
That's because we have a shortage of emu Commuter Trains, waiting times are unclear
Not from indonesia but obsessed with transit so subscribed, great content! Def gonna check out more vids from you in the future
your English is so good broo
Thank you
paling padet tp ga keliatan padet krn armadanya plg banyak
Jatinegara bakal rame orang pindah kereta.
@@rakandzakwan6402 ohh oke-oke terima kasih

Bogor line terlalu penuh sesak

Dasarnya apa KRL Jabodetabek jadi best Comuter Rail Line?
Bogor line is missing from Google Maps recently
Yeah, its back now
Masih berharap Karawang tersambung KRL

Just wanna know your opinion, do you think we need underground metro like in Moscow, Russia or underground subway like in NYC? Is it even possible to build such infrastructure, knowing that Jakarta terrain is so much different than Moscow or NYC, not to mention, much of Jakarta is already occupied by residential or commercial area.
From an engineering standpoint, well i'm not an engineer so I can't say.
But from a user perspective we need the network layout of Moscow (ring lines), but the station depths seen in New York (Aka shallow station), deep station is just gonna add costs and make getting in/out the station harder.
@@shindoride That’s interesting. I just hope the new capital have a underground subway system. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, bro, appreciate it🙏.
