A couple small things you missed: - As a couple other people have mentioned, the blooper lowers your handling stat and makes your drifting more slippery. Doesn’t save it from being the worst item in the game though - The coin can be very helpful in first, as if you have a coin in your first item slot and a defensive item in the second, you can use the coin as defence against the boo as the boo will steal the item in your first slot - The boo is by far the best item to dodge the shock, as both the star and the bullet appear when used on the minimap while the boo doesn’t. This means that people who are waiting for everyone to stop being invincible can’t tell if you’re in a boo or not - You can also use the boo strategically, since it steals from the first slot and you can see what item people have in their first slot as they hold it, though it’s still completely random - If you want to get rid of a golden mushroom, you can just tap the button and let it run out, as it doesn’t deplete faster if you spam it - You can actually kinda control where the bullet goes. If you turn your stick to the corner you’re going around, it’ll take the corner tighter Overall I did agree with the rankings though and enjoyed the video!
Yea i agree with it too, after a bit I got confused on some of the placements but then I remembered he said he placed them depending on where you get them/how usefull they are when you pull them. Like it
one other thing is that the item probabilities in this game are not solely based on distance from 1st. for example, no matter how far you are from 1st, you cannot ever pull a power item or a blue shell in 2nd. there are 5 "packs": 1st, 2nd, 3rd through 5th, 6th through 8th, and 9th through 12th. which pack you're on will define which items you can pull, before distance defines the probabilities. there are also certain items that can't be pulled on the first 20 or 30 seconds of a race, such as stars or bullets.

Glad to a see a good take on the coin. Yes the item itself isn't good, but it's a necessary dummy item to keep people not in 1st a fighting chance to hit 1st. Without the coin, 1st place would have no downside to back spamming items before every single item box, then get guaranteed double defensive items. There's also cool strategy with the coin, if you keep it out in your first slot you can force Boos to take your coin and still have a defensive item ready. It can also hide what your second item is from opponents since your third person model will only show the coin, they will have no clue if you have a Bob-omb in storage for them or not.
It doesn’t really affect the use of the super horn itself, yet I like how the horn actually uses the sound of the character’s kart horn; it’s hard to hear in a race over the music and other sound effects, but it’s a really nice touch to an otherwise boring item
A little off topic, but I always find it funny when people use a base boost sound effect in a MK8 video while using the super horn. I see it as a meme item honestly 😅
I think Lightning is better than everything else due to it destroying the items if everyone else as well and losing them some coins. Bringing them together also means they will be attacking each other more and thus you'll be getting even more value.
I think lightning is the best item in the game, it's an item design to make every player closer to each other. The fact that the effect depends on your position makes it the best balancing and chaotic item at the same time. If you're playing casually with friends it makes it so the best player doesn't completely dominate the game and make it boring for everyone else. If you're playing competitive, the whole game is played around it (specially in teams).

One thing you didn’t mention about the blooper that not many people talk about: When you’re hit with the blooper, it actually has a secondary effect and makes turning a little wonky. Ever notice when you’re hit with the blooper, you drift much wider than you anticipated? It’s like the blooper ink makes you a little slippery I don’t expect that factoid to boost its place on the list but I just thought I’d point it out 👍🏻
The Crazy 8 will only give you items that are enabled by the item settings. For example, if you have the Bananas Only setting, it will give you 8 Bananas. The one exception is the Blooper. For some reason, having only the Blooper and Crazy 8 enabled makes the latter give you Mushrooms and Stars as well.
The triple red shell is without a doubt one of the most versatile and useful power-ups. It gives you protection on all sides and because the shells are red, they seek enemies. Overall a really useful power up which I find to be really helpful in most situations
Hopefully the fake item box and triple bob-bombs. The mega mushroom takes up too much of your screen when used, plus the music and item itself is cringy. Nothing inherently wrong with the bowser shell, I just feel like there are better items than it
What about a Dry Bones shell? You could throw it like a normal green shell, except instead of bouncing, it breaks and the Dry Bones’ head, arms and legs home in on other racers and each of them will hit a different target (not including the one hit by the shell because they are still recovering).
Clearly the feather is above the bullet bill simply due to the fact that it’s the most god tier and useful item in the entire game. So good in fact they had to cut it from the main modes just because of how good it is.
shock crazy underrated on this list, when you're talking about every other items' ability to dodge the shock as one of its biggest strengths, you know how important that item is. i would put it at #1 personally, being able to instantly hit every single person in the game, make them lose their items and make them all slower for a good number of seconds while nothing bad happens to you is a power way too great to be beaten by some mushrooms
You can only get it if you are Very Very Far away from 1st place. Its useful but its rarity combined with the fact that you are so far away from the front makes it not as useful for the user than many other items.
Blooper makes your traction worse. And the coin will give you a guaranteed defense item if you hit another item block. And the blue shell does as much damage as a red shell compared to the older versions
Your ranking is really accurate, I just want to add something to it (as I play competitive Mario kart 8 Deluxe). The golden mushroom is ranked too much high, but really too much. Why ? Well if you count how much time you can keep boosting with it, it doesn't last for more than 5 normal mushroom boosts. On the other hand, you can't get rid of it quickly. And that's a big problem considering you will more likely get this item in the bottom 4 spots, or at least very far away from 1st. The problem is that the main goal of being in the back is : pull shock ; or dodge the shock someone pulled (you said it, there is one in almost every race). And trust me when I say that except on bagging tracks, when you get a golden and no shock was thrown yet, it's the end of your race. When in the back, competitive players fear the golden mushroom, they don't want it at all and when pulled we know we are screwed for sure. On the other hand you are defenseless. That means : if you drive past the 8th place you are more likely to die, and if you stay in the back you can be easily hit by stars, bills, or even items that a boo stole, and also you can't chain dodges for shock. The item is not that bad, but considering you can only get it when you are very far away, it is as bad as pulling boo in last place. In conclusion, except on bagging tracks this item sucks and you don't want it AT ALL. For me, it needs to be ranked at least below triple greenshells, which are way more useful in the position you usually get them. The triple mushrooms is well-ranked and is way better because you can pull them in the middle, and you can get rid of them very quickly But overall you did a great job congrats man ! 👏 (Ah yes also in competitive shock is the best item to pull, but in online chill lobbies it's not that good so your ranking is understandable 👍)
Another cool perk with the Boomerang is that you don't have to get rid of it to use other items, as it will, weirdly enough, go into the second slot if you already had an item in the second slot, allowing you to use those items before returning to the Boomerang. It might also be a hindrance at times but I find it cool.

Something that makes the blooper even worse is that if you manage to get and use it in first place (via custom items or smuggling) it will only affect you and no one else
Now I want a version of this based purely on game impact. As much as we may hate coins they fill a very important balancing role to prevent 1st from getting ahead
I think the star should be a little higher because one aspects I think is underrated about it is that it disappears from your roster when you use it so if you are lower in a race you can use it before a double item box and you can be in a star while having 2 very good items all while dodging any items and going faster.

Here's what i would've added Mega Mushroom (Turns User Big) Ice Flower (Freezes Track Behind You) Double Cherry (Clones User) Rock Mushroom (Turns Into a Boulder and Crushes Opponents and Obstacles) Mini Mushroom (Turns Tiny and Speedy) Magic Wand (Inverts Controls Of Nearest Enemy) Propeller Mushroom (Floats Above the Track to avoid obstacles like puddles) Capture (Possess Nearest Enemy Temporarily) Elephant Fruit (Trunk in Front Swats Obstacles and Enemies) Drill Mushroom (Drills Underground to Avoid, Drills Up Underneath Enemies to Stun) Bubble Flower (Encases Enemy in a Slowing Bubble) has a triple variant
FINALLY someon understands the interesting gameplay dynamic behing the coin Item. Its MEANT to be bad, and adds cool syrategy like holding on to it to garuentee a protection item on the next box, or boo protection if you have a better item in your second slot
I really hope Nintendo returns the star to it's former glory in Mario Kart 9. Ever since 7 they heavily nerfed the star's speed boost to the point where it just plays like a boo that let's you drive offroad. In the older games like Wii and Double Dash the star felt more like an invincible gold mushroom.
Shocked that the shock is so low, I thought it would be a guaranteed top 3 at least just because of how much it can change the game and remove other powerful items and coins. Maybe I’ve just been watching too much shortcat ig
I’m not sure if someone else has said this, but the boomerang has other interactions as well. It’s an item that has a count (3 throws), but it has a bit more control than the items with timers. If you use your boomerang and have a second item, it will come back to you and take up your second slot, so you can use the boomerang once to get to those mushrooms or shells or etc. and have the boomerang still if you choose. Also, if you don’t want a boomerang, you can throw it right before a double time box and it will get rid of the boomerang and give you two new items to work with. With boos, if you activate them one of you slots will always be taken up so you have to hope what it steals is worth it. I don’t think this changes it ranking, but i think it’s cool they add these types of things into the game

I like how the music for most of the sections are appropriate to the item being talked about. Really good job on the music selection. Side note: Not sure if this is intentional but the Red Shells having Shroom Ridge could refence the Mario Kart DS mission that you race against the Red Car. Probably isn't a reference to that honestly but it's funny that even one that doesn't seem to have a big connection has one if you think about it hard enough.
As a fairly competitive player, I think I can say if this video is subjective. I'll add more to this as I watch. I think the coin item is better than you're giving in credit for, while it's for balancing reason of course, but on DK Summit, you get like 4 coins per lap while driving optimally, so the coin item is really good. I would argue it's better than the blue shell because it's nearly impossible for you to catch up with only a blue shell, while getting to 10 coins does help catch up or break away, as getting to 10 coins matters more than the speed stat. Also, if you have coins, you go faster in the bullet and everything. I completely agree with your fire though, as green shells hone onto a player if they bounce off a wall. For your banana example, I think it would have been cool if you mentioned that they send you forwards instead of sideways, so if you hit yourself with one before getting hit by a blue shell to dodge one in I frames. I would personally put the boo above the golden because it keeps you invincible for 10 SECONDS. That's longer than every other item disincluding the bullet bill used in certain spots. Also, the shock being so low is a crime, that's a top 2 item for sure. I feel this way because in competitive Mario Kart, you almost always have at least 1 teammate, so if you pull the lightning and dodge your teammate, you pretty much win. Can I say though, you completely nailed the triple Mushroom being better than the golden. And if you want to know the boost you're getting from the star, it completley maxes out all your stats, which I find to be really cool. I do find it funny how high you put the triple red shell, but I would agree that it is the best offensive item (Except for the shock). Overall, your ranking was very respectable, and I've been watching you for years. Keep up the good work!
The Blooper’s slipperyness has actually cost me multiple firsts because they make super tight turns that you’re used to making impossible. It’s actually not terrible at highest level, but it definitely is not good either
Great video Odyssey I agree with most your picks on the list. However, I feel the lightning needs to be much higher. While yes it's rare to obtain, and you can really only obtain it in 12th place, you are almost guaranteed to reach at least the top 7 unless you are like a whole lap behind. Given that stars and other items appear on the map the lightning could also be used strategically to target shock players who are either over a death zone pit or after their defense item runs out. I agree that items such as the bullet bill are superior but given that this is a power ranking video I feel the lightning should be no lower than at least top 3. Again, no hate towards this video at all but I personally feel you did the lightning a little dirty!
Great video! I personally probably would've moved the Boo down a bit lower because it got nerfed hard in 8 deluxe because in the older games, you could actually go on off road without slowing down, that makes it more useful to me and I wish it was brought back in 8 deluxe...
The Super Star is my favorite item in the Mario Kart series, as well in the main series. Keep it up with your "Dry Bones for Smash", I like hearing you say it.
Others already pointed out the important things, but I just felt like saying hi 😊 Actually there is one thing I’d like to point out for the Boo, you covered all the importance of it, but when it comes to item distribution, if not using custom items there can only be one Boo in play, and also if there are no other items available (which isn’t too common) the boo will automatically come back with a mushroom, unlike the older games where it gives you nothing
Also being first with 10 coins feels surprisingly good since you can build up a good lead many times. First place ironically can also be one of the more safer places to be so a lot of the times everybody behind you will not have the 10 coins. Being first and then hit by a blue shell, if you use the coin after that and collect one from your lost coins, it gets you to 10 again instantly. Especially for when playing with friends always try to have about 10 coins :D Also as odyssey already mentioned with a coin in inventory you will get guaranteed non coin item in the next box.
Idk about in 8, but I know in other Mario Karts, the bloopers ink, DOES actually affect the computers slightly. They slow down and swerve back and forth the SLIGHTEST bit.
Something you didn’t mention for the coin that actually made me like it a little bit: if you have a coin in your main slot and a defense item in the secondary, holding onto the coin will essentially be a shield against a boo so that your defense can’t get stolen, so there is at least a little strategy around holding onto coins

While I like Mario in general, I'm not fond of Mario Kart and never have been, but you talk about it in such an interesting way that I've been interested in it while watching this video even if I don't like it.
12:48 always use it on the red. Reds and blues cause IDENTICAL hitstun, the only difference is reds let you tumble forward while blues make you tumble in pace.
I really like getting the coin in 1st place because a most of the time, the coins on the track are not optimally placed, meaning I have to take far wider turns to collect coins. The item circumvents this. I also like that I can refresh my coins instantly after getting hit anywhere
I think the Bob-Omb is a better defensive item then you give it credit for, sure it's not as reliable as a green shell but here's the thing, red shells are probably the most common concern, but since it always travels in the center of the track you can just drop the Bob-Omb in the middle of the track (Same with bananas) and the red shell will pretty much always run into it, piece of cake : )
Something about the blue shell I have to say is when you get hit by anything you become invincible for a couple of frames, so if a blue shell is coming to you, you can just hit a banana, or can hit by any obstacles that are on the track. When you do that, you won't get hit by the blue shell.
I completely agree with the fact that the triple shroom is better than the golden. Being able to space out the shoots make it so much better, especially if you are bad at spamming
19:30 I did something really cool against my friend in Mario Kart 7 back in the day... it was just me vs him, no CPU's, and we were on the final turn right before a jump in front of the finish line (I don't remember the track)... he got the Lucky 7 in first place and I had a green shell in second. The turn was too curvy to get a clean shot on him, so I had to risk a rebound. I shot the green shell, bounced it off the wall, and nailed the shot. I ended up timing it perfectly to hit his bomb in the item ring, it blew him up, and I was victorious! It was even cooler because he said he was one item off from using his invincibility star and breezing to the end for free
Blooper should also make drifts slippery so it actually effects things also it should lower the cpu difficulty when used in single player. Also boomerang should stun for longer slightly
Super Horn (that’s its name, not “sound horn” as you called it) is quite good. Its hitbox lasts a pretty long time and can clear a lot of nearby weapons out. It also knocks away a lot of tracks hazards, including the train on N64 Kalimari Desert or the traffic that appears on multiple tracks.
Gonna quote one of my favorite TH-camrs (cjszero01) regarding the coin which is how I feel about them as well: "Everything thing is now a leader shell to you. You can't attack, you can't defend, and that tiny little speed boost should be ashamed to call itself one!"

Or maybe they could even add the Fizzlit. I can’t remember what game it originated from but I know it was in 3D World. Basically, when thrown, it would move forward a bit, stop, and then wait for a racer to get in a square radius around it, and then expand into the electric square form, shocking racers that drive over them and shrinking them similar to the Lightning power up. Or maybe they could add the Mini Mushroom, which gives you a mush (get it?) larger boost of speed than the Mushroom but also shrinks you like Lightning. They could even add the Builder Hammer, which could be like a combination of the Hammer Suit and Builder Suit from Mario Maker 2, and using it would activate a timer similar to the Fire Flower and throw large hammers in a large arc, but holding down on the D-pad or control stick would make it drop boxes that behave similarly to Bananas.
The fire flower puts you in the least amount of stun of any item. In 7 this actually worked really well as invincibility frames we item dependent not cart combination dependent, meaning you could use a fire flour to put someone into stun for longer if you could tune your shots and keep hitting them. In 8 you always get a fuck ton of invincibility so it does a lot less and you can’t combo multiple shots.
Also, in the boomerang even if you have 3 throws, and a really good item, you can throw it AND then use the good item, keeping the boomerang, unlike some others items like the piranha plant, or the Golden mushroom
This video made me want to get back into Mario kart but when I went to my game collection Mario kart was not in its case, I checked the other cases and found that Nickelodeon kart racers (which I got as a joke gift, emphasis on _gift_ ) was also taken. I know the culprits but that’s getting into some personal stuff so I’ll leave it at that.
The coin is better than people think. You can use it as bait for a boo and if you have a coin, your next item is guaranteed to be either a banana, green shell, red shell, bomb, or super horn which are very useful for protection
I liked the video but I have a different personal ranking that I'd like to share for the sake of discussion... So here it goes xd (Too much text warning btw) 22. Blooper: Only usefull when track is full of shit or when the person has moving obstacles that they can't see 21. Golden Mushroom: Doesn't let you chain in 3rd lap situations and it restricts you from your 2nd item for too much time while it isn't that good of a boost 20. Blue shell: Pretty useless and if you kill someone with triples in front of you, it doesn't break the shells or bananas, so it could end in bad scenarios rather than good ones. 19. Triple Bananas: This will apply to any triple items: It doesn't have any defense quality cause you can't choose when you take them out, so in many situations is not that usefull when you can't controll what you do with them, also for turns they are an awful protection. 18. Triple Green Shells: The same as the bananas, but they can be more usefull for hitting players than bananas. 17. Triple Red Shells: The same as the other, but you have the power to hit multiple oponents, but usually at the spots you get it people has other triples, boomerangs and even stars, so it isn't that usefull. 16. Piranha Plant: It can be taken off when the player prefers it, but it isn't that usefull, a bit of a boost and it can be usefull to hit people but... meh 15. Coin: It gives the 1st player a chance to not get drafted at the beggining of the tracks, doesn't hinder you and you have the power of deciding when get rid of it. 14. Banana: Good defensive and sometimes offensive item, idk is a banana lol 13. Fire Flower: Good to kill easily other players but defensively on turns is completely useless and in some situations the fireballs will jump above the enemy 12. Crazy 8: A very OP item if used well, but the bomb is very easy to detonate by other players the same issue with triples, you don't choose when take it out. 11. Mushroom: Good for taking cuts and it can be used for dodging blue, I like it. 10. Boomerang: It has the big advantage of killing easily triple items and being extremely quickly for short range with the plus of the 3rd throw that is very easy to hit due the fact that the boomerang keeps attached to the floor heigh. 9. Bob Omb: Great for hitting a large amount of people in the right circumstances and easy to hit a single target, literally is a guaranteed hit if used correctly. 8. Boo: The longest invencibility item in the game by default with the plus of another item that even if its a luck factor, you can take advantage of the property that it can only steal from people in front of you, so you can let pass someone with star or shrooms and the chances of stealing them is pretty high, great item. 7. Super Horn: Good defensive item that lets you be safe from any shell or banana for a while and break them, good if you have someone with triples aside. 6. Triple Mushrooms: Very good item that makes great team with another on the top, but it has the downside that in some situations it isn't that usefull when the pack is too disperce, but in many instances it can take you from bottom to top. 5. Red Shell: Good offense and defense but it has the counter that it only works when the next player has no protection and usually you need 2 of them to make them worth, but it can be used as defense or use it to explode the bomb of the person in front of you and make it predictable and avoidable. I know that it works for long distances, but on those situations it isn't that usefull to mess with someone too far from you. 4. Green Shells: It has all the bennefits of the red shells (Except the bomb scenario). Good to hit someone by the side and make their defenses worth nothing (Even with triples that has an awful hitbox). Also in gliders you can throw them extremely fast for a good hit (and in that scenario it has piercing properties, making triples even more worthless). 3. Shock: You literally paralize all the room (except stars) and make them tiny, the only downside is the fact that it takes a slot of your items, but who cares if you can have another item next. Only downside is that you can get hit by stars or dropped items afterwards. 2. Bullet Bill: Complete invencibility by a long period if used correctly, but it has a big downside against the number 1 and is that in many times it'll go extremely wide and wasting a bit of time, but a really great dodge item. 1. Star: Just extremely good, it takes all of your stats at the fullest, makes you faster, makes shrooms even better and is the only instance when the golden mushroom is usefull cause it makes you go almost as fast as a bullet bill but with the plus of having complete controll over what you do. I'd love if they added the Thundercloud from Mario kart Wii For those who dont know what it does: The item is immideadly used once picked up, and spawns a sizzling thundercloud above your kart, wich gives a constant speed boost like the star, for as long as it's on you, but bumping to other players passes the cloud to them. After 10 seconds, a lightning strikes the player and shrinks them, like the regular lightning item. The cloud disappears after this. So it's a risk & reward hot potato. Having it is a good thing, but get rid of it before it f*cks you in the A.
I think it’s a myth that coins don’t affect your speed significantly. Slowest combo (Rosalina biddybuggy) with 10 coins is faster than the fastest combo with 0 coins.
I'd definitely argue the lighting or shock is the best item just due to how impactful it is. Dodging the shock is game determinative, Bullet Bills don't guarantee a win, or even a good placement, dodging the shock or timing one well pretty much does

A couple small things you missed:
- As a couple other people have mentioned, the blooper lowers your handling stat and makes your drifting more slippery. Doesn’t save it from being the worst item in the game though
- The coin can be very helpful in first, as if you have a coin in your first item slot and a defensive item in the second, you can use the coin as defence against the boo as the boo will steal the item in your first slot
- The boo is by far the best item to dodge the shock, as both the star and the bullet appear when used on the minimap while the boo doesn’t. This means that people who are waiting for everyone to stop being invincible can’t tell if you’re in a boo or not
- You can also use the boo strategically, since it steals from the first slot and you can see what item people have in their first slot as they hold it, though it’s still completely random
- If you want to get rid of a golden mushroom, you can just tap the button and let it run out, as it doesn’t deplete faster if you spam it
- You can actually kinda control where the bullet goes. If you turn your stick to the corner you’re going around, it’ll take the corner tighter

one other thing is that the item probabilities in this game are not solely based on distance from 1st. for example, no matter how far you are from 1st, you cannot ever pull a power item or a blue shell in 2nd. there are 5 "packs": 1st, 2nd, 3rd through 5th, 6th through 8th, and 9th through 12th. which pack you're on will define which items you can pull, before distance defines the probabilities. there are also certain items that can't be pulled on the first 20 or 30 seconds of a race, such as stars or bullets.

Glad to a see a good take on the coin. Yes the item itself isn't good, but it's a necessary dummy item to keep people not in 1st a fighting chance to hit 1st. Without the coin, 1st place would have no downside to back spamming items before every single item box, then get guaranteed double defensive items. There's also cool strategy with the coin, if you keep it out in your first slot you can force Boos to take your coin and still have a defensive item ready. It can also hide what your second item is from opponents since your third person model will only show the coin, they will have no clue if you have a Bob-omb in storage for them or not.

It doesn’t really affect the use of the super horn itself, yet I like how the horn actually uses the sound of the character’s kart horn; it’s hard to hear in a race over the music and other sound effects, but it’s a really nice touch to an otherwise boring item
A little off topic, but I always find it funny when people use a base boost sound effect in a MK8 video while using the super horn. I see it as a meme item honestly 😅
I think Lightning is better than everything else due to it destroying the items if everyone else as well and losing them some coins. Bringing them together also means they will be attacking each other more and thus you'll be getting even more value.
Heck at one point, the lightning was much stronger, as it use to competely negate the gliders of other players.
I think lightning is the best item in the game, it's an item design to make every player closer to each other. The fact that the effect depends on your position makes it the best balancing and chaotic item at the same time.
If you're playing casually with friends it makes it so the best player doesn't completely dominate the game and make it boring for everyone else. If you're playing competitive, the whole game is played around it (specially in teams).

When you’re hit with the blooper, it actually has a secondary effect and makes turning a little wonky. Ever notice when you’re hit with the blooper, you drift much wider than you anticipated? It’s like the blooper ink makes you a little slippery

The Crazy 8 will only give you items that are enabled by the item settings. For example, if you have the Bananas Only setting, it will give you 8 Bananas.
The one exception is the Blooper. For some reason, having only the Blooper and Crazy 8 enabled makes the latter give you Mushrooms and Stars as well.
Not even the Crazy 8 wants the Blooper.

The triple red shell is without a doubt one of the most versatile and useful power-ups. It gives you protection on all sides and because the shells are red, they seek enemies. Overall a really useful power up which I find to be really helpful in most situations

What about a Dry Bones shell? You could throw it like a normal green shell, except instead of bouncing, it breaks and the Dry Bones’ head, arms and legs home in on other racers and each of them will hit a different target (not including the one hit by the shell because they are still recovering).

shock crazy underrated on this list, when you're talking about every other items' ability to dodge the shock as one of its biggest strengths, you know how important that item is. i would put it at #1 personally, being able to instantly hit every single person in the game, make them lose their items and make them all slower for a good number of seconds while nothing bad happens to you is a power way too great to be beaten by some mushrooms
You can only get it if you are Very Very Far away from 1st place. Its useful but its rarity combined with the fact that you are so far away from the front makes it not as useful for the user than many other items.

Your ranking is really accurate, I just want to add something to it (as I play competitive Mario kart 8 Deluxe).
The golden mushroom is ranked too much high, but really too much. Why ?
Well if you count how much time you can keep boosting with it, it doesn't last for more than 5 normal mushroom boosts. On the other hand, you can't get rid of it quickly. And that's a big problem considering you will more likely get this item in the bottom 4 spots, or at least very far away from 1st.
The problem is that the main goal of being in the back is : pull shock ; or dodge the shock someone pulled (you said it, there is one in almost every race). And trust me when I say that except on bagging tracks, when you get a golden and no shock was thrown yet, it's the end of your race. When in the back, competitive players fear the golden mushroom, they don't want it at all and when pulled we know we are screwed for sure. On the other hand you are defenseless. That means : if you drive past the 8th place you are more likely to die, and if you stay in the back you can be easily hit by stars, bills, or even items that a boo stole, and also you can't chain dodges for shock.
The item is not that bad, but considering you can only get it when you are very far away, it is as bad as pulling boo in last place.
In conclusion, except on bagging tracks this item sucks and you don't want it AT ALL. For me, it needs to be ranked at least below triple greenshells, which are way more useful in the position you usually get them.
The triple mushrooms is well-ranked and is way better because you can pull them in the middle, and you can get rid of them very quickly

(Ah yes also in competitive shock is the best item to pull, but in online chill lobbies it's not that good so your ranking is understandable 👍)
Another cool perk with the Boomerang is that you don't have to get rid of it to use other items, as it will, weirdly enough, go into the second slot if you already had an item in the second slot, allowing you to use those items before returning to the Boomerang. It might also be a hindrance at times but I find it cool.

I think the star should be a little higher because one aspects I think is underrated about it is that it disappears from your roster when you use it so if you are lower in a race you can use it before a double item box and you can be in a star while having 2 very good items all while dodging any items and going faster.

I really hope Nintendo returns the star to it's former glory in Mario Kart 9. Ever since 7 they heavily nerfed the star's speed boost to the point where it just plays like a boo that let's you drive offroad. In the older games like Wii and Double Dash the star felt more like an invincible gold mushroom.

Starting the video off with a cool bowser meme, you already know this video slaps.
I’m not sure if someone else has said this, but the boomerang has other interactions as well. It’s an item that has a count (3 throws), but it has a bit more control than the items with timers. If you use your boomerang and have a second item, it will come back to you and take up your second slot, so you can use the boomerang once to get to those mushrooms or shells or etc. and have the boomerang still if you choose. Also, if you don’t want a boomerang, you can throw it right before a double time box and it will get rid of the boomerang and give you two new items to work with. With boos, if you activate them one of you slots will always be taken up so you have to hope what it steals is worth it. I don’t think this changes it ranking, but i think it’s cool they add these types of things into the game

Not sure if this is intentional but the Red Shells having Shroom Ridge could refence the Mario Kart DS mission that you race against the Red Car. Probably isn't a reference to that honestly but it's funny that even one that doesn't seem to have a big connection has one if you think about it hard enough.
As a fairly competitive player, I think I can say if this video is subjective. I'll add more to this as I watch. I think the coin item is better than you're giving in credit for, while it's for balancing reason of course, but on DK Summit, you get like 4 coins per lap while driving optimally, so the coin item is really good. I would argue it's better than the blue shell because it's nearly impossible for you to catch up with only a blue shell, while getting to 10 coins does help catch up or break away, as getting to 10 coins matters more than the speed stat. Also, if you have coins, you go faster in the bullet and everything. I completely agree with your fire though, as green shells hone onto a player if they bounce off a wall. For your banana example, I think it would have been cool if you mentioned that they send you forwards instead of sideways, so if you hit yourself with one before getting hit by a blue shell to dodge one in I frames. I would personally put the boo above the golden because it keeps you invincible for 10 SECONDS. That's longer than every other item disincluding the bullet bill used in certain spots. Also, the shock being so low is a crime, that's a top 2 item for sure. I feel this way because in competitive Mario Kart, you almost always have at least 1 teammate, so if you pull the lightning and dodge your teammate, you pretty much win. Can I say though, you completely nailed the triple Mushroom being better than the golden. And if you want to know the boost you're getting from the star, it completley maxes out all your stats, which I find to be really cool. I do find it funny how high you put the triple red shell, but I would agree that it is the best offensive item (Except for the shock). Overall, your ranking was very respectable, and I've been watching you for years. Keep up the good work!
The Blooper’s slipperyness has actually cost me multiple firsts because they make super tight turns that you’re used to making impossible. It’s actually not terrible at highest level, but it definitely is not good either
The only downside to the bullet bill is that it might run out when you least expect it, causing you to slow down a bit.
Great video Odyssey I agree with most your picks on the list. However, I feel the lightning needs to be much higher. While yes it's rare to obtain, and you can really only obtain it in 12th place, you are almost guaranteed to reach at least the top 7 unless you are like a whole lap behind. Given that stars and other items appear on the map the lightning could also be used strategically to target shock players who are either over a death zone pit or after their defense item runs out. I agree that items such as the bullet bill are superior but given that this is a power ranking video I feel the lightning should be no lower than at least top 3. Again, no hate towards this video at all but I personally feel you did the lightning a little dirty!

Actually there is one thing I’d like to point out for the Boo, you covered all the importance of it, but when it comes to item distribution, if not using custom items there can only be one Boo in play, and also if there are no other items available (which isn’t too common) the boo will automatically come back with a mushroom, unlike the older games where it gives you nothing
Also being first with 10 coins feels surprisingly good since you can build up a good lead many times.
First place ironically can also be one of the more safer places to be so a lot of the times everybody behind you will not have the 10 coins.
Being first and then hit by a blue shell, if you use the coin after that and collect one from your lost coins, it gets you to 10 again instantly.
Especially for when playing with friends always try to have about 10 coins :D
Also as odyssey already mentioned with a coin in inventory you will get guaranteed non coin item in the next box.
Idk about in 8, but I know in other Mario Karts, the bloopers ink, DOES actually affect the computers slightly. They slow down and swerve back and forth the SLIGHTEST bit.
Something you didn’t mention for the coin that actually made me like it a little bit: if you have a coin in your main slot and a defense item in the secondary, holding onto the coin will essentially be a shield against a boo so that your defense can’t get stolen, so there is at least a little strategy around holding onto coins

I really like getting the coin in 1st place because a most of the time, the coins on the track are not optimally placed, meaning I have to take far wider turns to collect coins. The item circumvents this. I also like that I can refresh my coins instantly after getting hit anywhere
My favorite troll with the Banana and Bob-omb is dropping one over a jump that passes over a previous section of the track

I think the Bob-Omb is a better defensive item then you give it credit for, sure it's not as reliable as a green shell but here's the thing, red shells are probably the most common concern, but since it always travels in the center of the track you can just drop the Bob-Omb in the middle of the track (Same with bananas) and the red shell will pretty much always run into it, piece of cake : )
Something about the blue shell I have to say is when you get hit by anything you become invincible for a couple of frames, so if a blue shell is coming to you, you can just hit a banana, or can hit by any obstacles that are on the track. When you do that, you won't get hit by the blue shell.
I completely agree with the fact that the triple shroom is better than the golden. Being able to space out the shoots make it so much better, especially if you are bad at spamming
A benefit of the coin is that if you have it in slot 1 and a horn in slot 2 while in 1st it can protect you from boos stealing your horn

19:30 I did something really cool against my friend in Mario Kart 7 back in the day... it was just me vs him, no CPU's, and we were on the final turn right before a jump in front of the finish line (I don't remember the track)... he got the Lucky 7 in first place and I had a green shell in second. The turn was too curvy to get a clean shot on him, so I had to risk a rebound. I shot the green shell, bounced it off the wall, and nailed the shot. I ended up timing it perfectly to hit his bomb in the item ring, it blew him up, and I was victorious! It was even cooler because he said he was one item off from using his invincibility star and breezing to the end for free
I remember playing the wii version with my dad when i was young, and I remember my dad sniping me with the banana item. It was legendary.
Blooper should also make drifts slippery so it actually effects things also it should lower the cpu difficulty when used in single player.

Super Horn (that’s its name, not “sound horn” as you called it) is quite good. Its hitbox lasts a pretty long time and can clear a lot of nearby weapons out. It also knocks away a lot of tracks hazards, including the train on N64 Kalimari Desert or the traffic that appears on multiple tracks.
Gonna quote one of my favorite TH-camrs (cjszero01) regarding the coin which is how I feel about them as well:

Coins, really, what am I gonna do with these? *Bribe them not to hit me?* To get a better understanding of my _abhorrence_ for these, think about it like this: The reason so many people hate the blue shell is because before the Super Horn, there wasn't a power-up that could actually *block* it! Sure, you could outrun it, or find a star on the ground, but that was highly uncommon. For the most part, you were *defenseless* against it! So when you get Coins, *everything is now a leader shell to you!* You can’t attack! You can’t defend! And that pathetic little speed boost should be _ashamed_ to call itself one! I wish I could use these to buy a better power-up, or maybe even pay a toll for a shortcut! Then I could see some potential! But apparently, that never crossed the developer's mind. Even before they came back in _Mario Kart 8_ I had them as my number-one hated item, because you couldn't really _do_ anything with them! Ask yourself: Have you ever said anything along the lines of these three phrases: *_"Oh I hope I get Coins this time!"_* or *_"Good thing I had Coins to get through that!"_* or how about *_"It sure is fun to use Coins!"_* Some people like them, because other players get them and they're defenseless. But what about _your_ experience with having them? You're not the other player, and when _you_ get them, are _you_ happy? I know I'm not."

Or maybe they could even add the Fizzlit. I can’t remember what game it originated from but I know it was in 3D World. Basically, when thrown, it would move forward a bit, stop, and then wait for a racer to get in a square radius around it, and then expand into the electric square form, shocking racers that drive over them and shrinking them similar to the Lightning power up. Or maybe they could add the Mini Mushroom, which gives you a mush (get it?) larger boost of speed than the Mushroom but also shrinks you like Lightning. They could even add the Builder Hammer, which could be like a combination of the Hammer Suit and Builder Suit from Mario Maker 2, and using it would activate a timer similar to the Fire Flower and throw large hammers in a large arc, but holding down on the D-pad or control stick would make it drop boxes that behave similarly to Bananas.
The fire flower puts you in the least amount of stun of any item. In 7 this actually worked really well as invincibility frames we item dependent not cart combination dependent, meaning you could use a fire flour to put someone into stun for longer if you could tune your shots and keep hitting them. In 8 you always get a fuck ton of invincibility so it does a lot less and you can’t combo multiple shots.
Also, in the boomerang even if you have 3 throws, and a really good item, you can throw it AND then use the good item, keeping the boomerang, unlike some others items like the piranha plant, or the Golden mushroom

This video made me want to get back into Mario kart but when I went to my game collection Mario kart was not in its case, I checked the other cases and found that Nickelodeon kart racers (which I got as a joke gift, emphasis on _gift_ ) was also taken. I know the culprits but that’s getting into some personal stuff so I’ll leave it at that.
The coin is better than people think. You can use it as bait for a boo and if you have a coin, your next item is guaranteed to be either a banana, green shell, red shell, bomb, or super horn which are very useful for protection
I liked the video but I have a different personal ranking that I'd like to share for the sake of discussion...
So here it goes xd (Too much text warning btw)
22. Blooper: Only usefull when track is full of shit or when the person has moving obstacles that they can't see
21. Golden Mushroom: Doesn't let you chain in 3rd lap situations and it restricts you from your 2nd item for too much time while it isn't that good of a boost
20. Blue shell: Pretty useless and if you kill someone with triples in front of you, it doesn't break the shells or bananas, so it could end in bad scenarios rather than good ones.
19. Triple Bananas: This will apply to any triple items: It doesn't have any defense quality cause you can't choose when you take them out, so in many situations is not that usefull when you can't controll what you do with them, also for turns they are an awful protection.
18. Triple Green Shells: The same as the bananas, but they can be more usefull for hitting players than bananas.
17. Triple Red Shells: The same as the other, but you have the power to hit multiple oponents, but usually at the spots you get it people has other triples, boomerangs and even stars, so it isn't that usefull.
16. Piranha Plant: It can be taken off when the player prefers it, but it isn't that usefull, a bit of a boost and it can be usefull to hit people but... meh
15. Coin: It gives the 1st player a chance to not get drafted at the beggining of the tracks, doesn't hinder you and you have the power of deciding when get rid of it.
14. Banana: Good defensive and sometimes offensive item, idk is a banana lol
13. Fire Flower: Good to kill easily other players but defensively on turns is completely useless and in some situations the fireballs will jump above the enemy
12. Crazy 8: A very OP item if used well, but the bomb is very easy to detonate by other players the same issue with triples, you don't choose when take it out.
11. Mushroom: Good for taking cuts and it can be used for dodging blue, I like it.
10. Boomerang: It has the big advantage of killing easily triple items and being extremely quickly for short range with the plus of the 3rd throw that is very easy to hit due the fact that the boomerang keeps attached to the floor heigh.
9. Bob Omb: Great for hitting a large amount of people in the right circumstances and easy to hit a single target, literally is a guaranteed hit if used correctly.
8. Boo: The longest invencibility item in the game by default with the plus of another item that even if its a luck factor, you can take advantage of the property that it can only steal from people in front of you, so you can let pass someone with star or shrooms and the chances of stealing them is pretty high, great item.
7. Super Horn: Good defensive item that lets you be safe from any shell or banana for a while and break them, good if you have someone with triples aside.
6. Triple Mushrooms: Very good item that makes great team with another on the top, but it has the downside that in some situations it isn't that usefull when the pack is too disperce, but in many instances it can take you from bottom to top.
5. Red Shell: Good offense and defense but it has the counter that it only works when the next player has no protection and usually you need 2 of them to make them worth, but it can be used as defense or use it to explode the bomb of the person in front of you and make it predictable and avoidable. I know that it works for long distances, but on those situations it isn't that usefull to mess with someone too far from you.
4. Green Shells: It has all the bennefits of the red shells (Except the bomb scenario). Good to hit someone by the side and make their defenses worth nothing (Even with triples that has an awful hitbox). Also in gliders you can throw them extremely fast for a good hit (and in that scenario it has piercing properties, making triples even more worthless).
3. Shock: You literally paralize all the room (except stars) and make them tiny, the only downside is the fact that it takes a slot of your items, but who cares if you can have another item next. Only downside is that you can get hit by stars or dropped items afterwards.
2. Bullet Bill: Complete invencibility by a long period if used correctly, but it has a big downside against the number 1 and is that in many times it'll go extremely wide and wasting a bit of time, but a really great dodge item.
1. Star: Just extremely good, it takes all of your stats at the fullest, makes you faster, makes shrooms even better and is the only instance when the golden mushroom is usefull cause it makes you go almost as fast as a bullet bill but with the plus of having complete controll over what you do. This item is just Kino haha

I'd love if they added the Thundercloud from Mario kart Wii
For those who dont know what it does:
The item is immideadly used once picked up, and spawns a sizzling thundercloud above your kart, wich gives a constant speed boost like the star, for as long as it's on you, but bumping to other players passes the cloud to them.
After 10 seconds, a lightning strikes the player and shrinks them, like the regular lightning item. The cloud disappears after this.
So it's a risk & reward hot potato. Having it is a good thing, but get rid of it before it f*cks you in the A.
Around 13:50 the mushroom actually can be gotten in first, it’s just really rare. I think around as rare as the horn.

I think it’s a myth that coins don’t affect your speed significantly. Slowest combo (Rosalina biddybuggy) with 10 coins is faster than the fastest combo with 0 coins.

I'd definitely argue the lighting or shock is the best item just due to how impactful it is. Dodging the shock is game determinative, Bullet Bills don't guarantee a win, or even a good placement, dodging the shock or timing one well pretty much does

If it can’t steal a item, it’ll ALWAYS give you a Mushroom.
