@Odyssey_Central the problem with the 64 remake being short is that, not only did they make it one “lap”, but they also shortened the track as in removed some parts. I would’ve preferred if they only did one of them, and I’d prefer not shortening the track, while also making you have to go around it 1 time. Or making it 2 laps, like Wario Colosseum. Otherwise it feels to short, and imo, in Mario Kart, long > short. And if they were to make it 3 laps whistle shortening the track, it would be okay because of the visuals, music, and especially normal and drift boosts.
Here are a few more level by level ideas I came up with: 1. All the Donkey Kong tracks 2. All the GBA tracks and their remakes 3. How likely all the battle Stages that aren't in 8DX are to return to MK8DX. Eg, Block Fort, GBA Battle Course 4, etc
It was actually 8’s remake of 3DS RR that made me love the course. I played it all the time as a kid, but never realized how amazing it was until then. It’s since become my favorite course in all of Mario Kart.
Definitely helps that 3DS Rainbow Road remake has the absolute most BEAUTIFUL road design in the series. It looks like a proper road MADE from a rainbow, the only other RR that gets close is Double Dash (Please bring it back in the next Mario Kart! We Double Dash fans were starving the entire pass)
I am excited for the Bowser’s castle video, I always found them to be among my favorite tracks from each game despite being less iconic than Rainbow Road.
@Cojosho97 the Only exception to a wild gba bowser castle glow up/remake was gba bowser castle 4 in Tour which dropped my jaw because it was such a wild glow up
Rainbow Roads are so good largely in part because they all feel like a great representation of their respective game. With some courses, if you were to look at them, it might not be immediately obvious what game it’s from. With Rainbow Road, though, it’s very obvious what games they’re made for. 7 is the only one to use multiple sections instead of laps, Double Dash makes use of a cannon-like section in the first game to have those, Wii makes use of several trick opportunities, you get the picture.
I grew up with Wii Rainbow Road, and man, when I was younger, I used to fall off that map a lot and sometimes avoid playing the Special Cup because of how scared I was. Now looking back and playing it now in present time, I realize I played one of the most challenging and iconic Rainbow Roads in MK History! I also love the song too, it always gives me the goosebumps :’) For another Level by Level, you can do a ranking of all the Bowser’s Castles in the series :) I loved this episode a bunch! 👍🏼

Tour also has its own Rainbow Road, it actually has two! RMX Rainbow Road 1 and RMX Rainbow Road 2, while it reuses assets from SNES Rainbow Road (as is the gimmick with the RMX courses), they still provide unique experiences. RMX Rainbow Road 1 has two massive gliding sections that intersect and RMX Rainbow Road 2 is like a cross between SNES Rainbow Road and Wii Mushroom Gorge. While they aren't fully original, they work as Tour's Rainbow Road in my opinion.
Great video, it was really interesting seeing you cover all of the Rainbow Roads, super excited to see a Bowser's Castle version! I'd also think a Baby Park style Level by Level would be fun to see for Yoshi Circuit as well since that track has changed quite a bit over the years

It really does suck that Tour never got its own rainbow road. Considering how good almost every tour nitro track is, a Tour Rainbow Road could have been the best in the series.

Really splendid video all around. I loved playing MK64 as a kid and I loved seeing the different character portraits in that game's Rainbow Road; that being said, the OG version was really long, and I'm personally glad they changed it to be more interesting + less drawn-out. I would like to see a Bowser's Castle "Level By Level" video someday, as that is another often "late-game" level (aside from Super Mario Kart and Super Circuit), so it would be interesting to see how different versions of that level are ranked.
I feel like the reason why 64's Rainbow Road is the way it is would be to capitalize on the "send off" aspect the track serves. You're driving down a long, beautiful road, viewing the gorgeous light art of all the active participants from all the races you completed to get to where you are now (plus boo 👻). Even the theme feels ceremonial compared to the others. It's like a credits screen within the game's main content! That's just my take on it, though
I especially appreciate how you discussed and ranked each RR from oldest to newest. Ordering it this way is one method that prevents number 2 from spoiling number 1, which happens with these "rank all items" lists when going by the (understandably) popular worst to best ordering. Another spoiler-reducing method I've seen, used in the NHL Draft Lottery, is that number 1 comes immediately after number 3. It feels less spoiled to have number 2 being implicitly given away compared to number 1. Any method of reducing spoilers in such ranked lists is something I always appreciate.
Ahhhhhhh Mario kart content creator didn't cover the RMX Rainbow Road tracks in MKT !!!1!1!!1 Phenomenal work overall, you really made justice to the rainbow roads
N64 Rainbow Road holds a place near and dear to my heart, even though I was a Wii Era gal. In middle school, one of the teachers had a couple old consoles students could use during breaks and special occasions. Obviously, that made his room very *popular.* To compensate, controllers had to be passed around after every Mario Kart race (the most common game played on both N64 and gamecube). Now, when you have a 15 minute break, and wanna make the most of it, what track are you gonna lean twoards? The longest.
In Mario kart 64’s Rainbow Road, there is this shortcut at the very beginning where you can jump off the road so that you can save time and not take you that long to complete 3 laps. You should do a video like this with Mario Circuit and Bowser Castle.
Personally, GCN Rainbow Road is my all time favourite. It's grand, lengthy, challengine, and visually pleasing (I love the giant straw pipe cannon). The music is also abosutely gorgeous.
What I like about Wii U Rainbow Road is the world building behind it. We see ads from REXA there, which is a play on JAXA, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, which would mean that this one means Rainbow Exploration Agency. Which means that this Rainbow Road is a space station/satellite from REXA. This implies that they are looking for different Rainbow Roads out there, and this Rainbow Road is them trying to replicate the more magical Rainbow Roads, most likely for scientific study.
After the bowsers castles, one on the circuit tracks would make sense since they are probably the next most known track type, but there would probably be a lot of tracks, especially in the first few games
I've always seen Mario Kart 8's rendition of n64 Rainbow Road as the intended final track. It's not like Mario Kart Wii, where the last retro course was Bowser's Castle because... some reason. One could argue it was to keep Mario Kart Wii's Rainbow Road from potentially being overshadowed, but I think with Mario Kart 8 they might've intended its new Rainbow Road to be the precursor Rainbow Road, before the grandest finale located in the retro cup. The train magically blowing its whistle as it chugs by in the sky... that's my favorite part of the course, I think.
As someone who Religiously plays double dash still to this day, i can easily say its atleast A, i agree with the rest of your rankings and id think if you were to play it, youd agree with me. The layout and all the cool elements and gimmicks make easily A, however what pulls it all together is double dashes physics, truly a chaotic masterpiece that i personally would put up in S, but A would also be understandable. I hope you get the opportunity to play it and Double Dash someday
There is only one thing I would change about the N64 RR in the MK8 version. Give it two laps. I feel it's just a bit too short, and over all too soon. Having a second lap with the sped up final lap music the whole time would it a bit more staying power and a pump of adrenaline. If Baby Park can have seven laps, they can give Rainbow Road two.
As someone who has played double dash the double dash rainbow road can be BRUTAL. The dd controls can be really slippery so it’s easy to fall off. But it is from double dash so it’s chaotic yet fun
I agree. One time I drifted to hard and let go of the drift button to early and my speed boost shot me backwards of the 1. 180 degree turn. Or if you are shot down the Road because a bob omb or Yoshi Egg hit you at the spiral directly after you take a boost panel on the inside. Good memories
I agree. It's too long with it being 6min. It's like driving around 7's RR 3 times, only that 7's is much harder and more fun to drive around more than once, as you do in some CT versions for MKWii. But I think that 8's version of N64 RR is too short with it only being one minute in 200cc (They also somehow downscaled it a little, since in MK6 it took 2min in 50cc for a lap and not only 1.5min). Should have made it 2 rounds, then it would be better lenghtwise. They did it like that for the CT for Wii and it worked well with the lenght.
N64 Rainbow Road only sucks to the Zoomers whose attention spans are too short to appreciate this track is going for a marathon race. Also, be thankful there are guardrails everywhere because the ones who complain the track is too easy because of them are the same motherfuckers who would complain the track is too hard if they weren't there, especially since falling off the track is the most punishing in Mario Kart 64 than any other game. Mario Kart 8 butchered this track by changing the layout, removing the roaming Chain Chomps with easy to dodge bouncing ones, and making it a sectional track. If you thought the original was too long, the remake has the exact opposite problem. It becomes so short, the music doesn't have time to make a full loop before reaching the third section, so the remake can be best described as premature ejaculation. Nostalgia blind, deez nuts.

@@Gardetrace The only way I can agree 64 Rainbow Road works well, is if you look at it as a competitive grind for consistency on the wild drift mechanic.
@jeepmega 64 Rainbow Road is a bit of a drag. It's Ninty getting carried with emphasizing the new drift controls, when doing something new. The concept of the ribbon weaving through space was fresh. But the flex of linear length was ill-conceived. Sometimes clueless critics get something close to right.
For the ending comment, I do kinda wish there was a lightning round like you did with the 8DX remakes for the Tour Rainbow Roads, but I'm biased as an avid Mario Kart Tour player (the changing content keeps me invested in the game over time, unlike other games which I get bored of after a while)
I'll argue double dash's rainbow road is more difficult, since that game's handling is less snappy and more weighty regardless of your kart, and you cant drag, you have to time using items for defence.
I love 7’s rainbow road for its aesthetic. It’s by far one of the most magical feeling rainbow roads. My only complaint is that its third section is pretty messy.
I actually find it really funny that you mentioned the next Rainbow Road taking place over the sun, since during my speculation for Mario Kart 9 (before I realized Tour was 9, it's speculation for 10 now I guess), I had the idea that Rainbow Road was now a dual rainbow/lava theme, and Bowser's Castle was more similar to the Origami King, being less of a fortress and more of an actual castle that people live in
@@jeremiahhester6408 Especially with DDs controls. If you don't time your drifts and boost perfectly, you can be shot by them of the track, backwards! Or not habing an item to save you when a Yoshi Egg or Fireballs come from behind when you are at fully speed in the spiral section. Or the left-right curvy path before the shot up the pipe. How often you fall down there because you either drift too much or not enough. It's the second hardest RR in MK history after the one from Wii.
@@valeriebreidenstein8362 Exactly. I don't know why this guy decides to do a ranking even though he didn't experience every Rainbow Road himself. B tier is to low for Double Dash.
I would love to see a Bowsers Castle followup to this but it'll definitely take a while because by my count theres 22 of those. 7 of which are Super Circuit
21:32 The original actually wasn't going to have guardrails, but that probably wouldn't have made the course any better for you. The guardrails were added because the CPU players kept falling off of the course in earlier builds.
I've always wanted a GBA remake too. Like you said, they can't bring back the bounce pads, but I did have some ideas for that. On corners, they can make Wii style halfpipes. I think for the narrow shortcut it would also be cool if they kept the course in antigrav, then on the turn approaching the shortcut they add 3 antigrav spin boosters and have it so hitting all 3 opens up a glider ramp in that area (like on Hyrule Circuit). The glider section then has booster rings which, if navigated through skillfully, will let you glide across and skip the last turn.
"Umm actually, the Mario Circuit 2 remake in MK7 has a jump pad at the end and is 3D; don'tforget SNES GV2 in Wii and the GBA BC2 jump pass are rainbow in MKDS." 🤓 Also, MKDS was my first ever videogame I've 100%.
I know people really love 7 but in my mind nothing tops Wii that’s what introduced me to the track and idea of rainbow road being a fun and challenging track
I'll be honest, Wii Rainbow Road, while being one of the best tracks ever, is not really that hard, and I got one tip for anyone struggling. Use any inside drift bike (except the Spear) with manual drifting! This makes every tight turn easier and it's easier to control.
What I would love to see for a future Rainbow Road… It takes place in a snowy, mountainous region with a pine tree forest. The light of the road reflecting off the snow at night could be visually stunning. The road weaves through the forest and goes up and down the mountains. There is a waterfall that goes over the road and that part would be in anti-gravity so the falling water would above the track. The road has the style from the movie and there are the northern lights in the sky.
I am going to ALWAYS be of the opinion that Mario Kart 8 Rainbow Road is a really cool track idea, but it is AWFUL for the "Rainbow Road" for the game. Like.. the space station is SUCH a cool idea! It's just not Rainbow Road!
As a proud member of the prestigious SNES Rainbow Road from Super Circuit fandom, I’m extremely devastated at you placing it in F Tier, I’m still seething rn
I consider Mario Kart 64's Rainbow Road to be the beginner's Rainbow Road. It introduces the concept of if you don't pay attention you fall off while still being beginner friendly to those who haven't played many racing games. Not everyone's cup of tea, but it does have it's share of fans with the music and character faces in lights being the best things about MK64 Rainbow Road. Maybe Nintendo made the track a little too safe in the eyes of many competitive MK racers.
I know your mention of there being a rainbow road on the sun in a future game was meant as a joke. But similar to how Mario Kart 8’s Rainbow Road is themed around a space station, I think it would be cool to have the next Rainbow Road take place and be themed around a Dyson Sphere (a hypothetical megastructure that encompasses a star, which would be used to harness the energy of said star).
The one thing I do love about Double Dash's Raindow Road, is that the road looks like fruit roll-ups. This isn't fruit by the foot, this is fruit by the mile.
In some ways, I get why they decided to cover the entirety of 64 rainbow road with guard rails. I mean, the track already takes nearly 6 minutes to beat. If you added that that on top of the difficulty of say, double dash or wii rainbow road I could easily see the time the track takes to beat going from 6 minutes to 8 - 12 for the average or lesser skilled player. In some ways, it's bad, but I also respect it for the gall. If anything, the track is just an endurance test more than much else, which is certainly an interesting choice.
I know this is my 64 bias here but like, the length is what I love about it. Is it easier than all the other ones yes. But it's not about skill for that map, it's a pure endurance run. And I am so mad they made it a one lap track in the remake.
Is it werid that when I think of iconic mario 'level' this is the first thing to come to my mind. It probably have something to do with me sucking the least in mario kart compared to other games.
The SMK championships (NTSC) are on in Japan for the first time ever at the end of this month. there will also be the normal championship (PAL) in Europe in late August
I honestly love 8's rainbow road because of it's muted colours, especially compared to 7, 6 and double dashes. Like Goddamn my eyes were screaming and I have no idea how you could even see where you are driving.
No wonder they added a version in the Mario Movie, they’re too iconic that they have to include them in a good amount and that’s why we love them
Too bad idiots thought it was something else...
To think we almost had a 3rd Choco Island variant instead of Rainbow Road in the first game is very unnerving to me.
I never knew about that… whoever added rainbow road is a hero….
@Odyssey_Central the problem with the 64 remake being short is that, not only did they make it one “lap”, but they also shortened the track as in removed some parts.
14:19 I also could not figure out how the gliders worked when I was younger too
As someone who Religiously plays double dash still to this day, i can easily say its atleast A, i agree with the rest of your rankings and id think if you were to play it, youd agree with me. The layout and all the cool elements and gimmicks make easily A, however what pulls it all together is double dashes physics, truly a chaotic masterpiece that i personally would put up in S, but A would also be understandable. I hope you get the opportunity to play it and Double Dash someday
Most underrated Rainbow Road is easily Super Circuit’s. Love it to bits.
Same
Double Dash is next
There is only one thing I would change about the N64 RR in the MK8 version. Give it two laps. I feel it's just a bit too short, and over all too soon. Having a second lap with the sped up final lap music the whole time would it a bit more staying power and a pump of adrenaline. If Baby Park can have seven laps, they can give Rainbow Road two.
completely agree
Especially since another track in a past Mario Kart game (Wario Colosseum from Mario Kart: Double Dash) already has 2 laps due to being long.
On a side note, 8 deluxe now has 7 snow/ice themed courses, 9 if you count Animal Crossing and Vancouver velocity
I believe the train is from Mario 3D world. It was a hidden level that always dropped a bunch of coins for you when you went in it.
Finally someone who isn’t nostalgia blind and actually says that N64 Rainbow Road sucks so much

The only way I can agree 64 Rainbow Road works well, is if you look at it as a competitive grind for consistency on the wild drift mechanic.
@jeepmega
64 Rainbow Road is a bit of a drag.
It's Ninty getting carried with emphasizing the new drift controls, when doing something new.
The concept of the ribbon weaving through space was fresh. But the flex of linear length was ill-conceived.
Sometimes clueless critics get something close to right.
For the ending comment, I do kinda wish there was a lightning round like you did with the 8DX remakes for the Tour Rainbow Roads, but I'm biased as an avid Mario Kart Tour player (the changing content keeps me invested in the game over time, unlike other games which I get bored of after a while)
helpful guide if you wanna jump to a specific one:
1:51 - Rainbow Road (Super Mario Kart)
3:43 - Rainbow why-is-this-a-6-minute-long Road (64)
5:05 - Rainbow Road (Super Circuit)
6:35 - SNES Rainbow Road (Super Circuit)
7:16 - Rainbow Road (Double-Dash!!)
8:56 - Rainbow Road (DS)
10:11 - Rainbow Road (Wii)
12:46 - peak (7)
16:12 - SNES Rainbow Road (7)
17:46 - Rainbow Disappointment (8)
19:50 - N64 Rainbow Road (8)
22:01 - SNES Rainbow Road (8)
22:33 - 3DS Rainbow Road + Wii Rainbow Road (8)
I'll argue double dash's rainbow road is more difficult, since that game's handling is less snappy and more weighty regardless of your kart, and you cant drag, you have to time using items for defence.
I love 7’s rainbow road for its aesthetic. It’s by far one of the most magical feeling rainbow roads. My only complaint is that its third section is pretty messy.
I actually find it really funny that you mentioned the next Rainbow Road taking place over the sun, since during my speculation for Mario Kart 9 (before I realized Tour was 9, it's speculation for 10 now I guess), I had the idea that Rainbow Road was now a dual rainbow/lava theme, and Bowser's Castle was more similar to the Origami King, being less of a fortress and more of an actual castle that people live in
when was tour caalled mk 9
@@93ImagineBreaker never, but it's the 9th first-party entry in the series, so the next game would more likely be called 10 or X
some may call it kinda like a spin off type thing@@SamRegan610
like while it did intro a new mechanics it oddly lack mk track staples@@SamRegan610
Double Dash rainbow road deserves S-tier if you ask me. It's really one of the best in the series
I agree, it's definitely one of the hardest. Definitely the most underrated Rainbow Road.
I would love to see a level by level video about dry bones look from each game💀💀💀
"Umm actually, the Mario Circuit 2 remake in MK7 has a jump pad at the end and is 3D; don'tforget SNES GV2 in Wii and the GBA BC2 jump pass are rainbow in MKDS." 🤓
Also, MKDS was my first ever videogame I've 100%.
I know people really love 7 but in my mind nothing tops Wii that’s what introduced me to the track and idea of rainbow road being a fun and challenging track
Great video man ! You've got to play double dash though it's amazing, especially with friends.
shoutout to 7 having the engine sound in the music sometimes
I'll be honest, Wii Rainbow Road, while being one of the best tracks ever, is not really that hard, and I got one tip for anyone struggling. Use any inside drift bike (except the Spear) with manual drifting! This makes every tight turn easier and it's easier to control.
Super Mario Kart wasn't planned to even _have_ a Rainbow Road. In its place was a scrapped Choco Island 3
What I would love to see for a future Rainbow Road…
It takes place in a snowy, mountainous region with a pine tree forest.
I don't like this at all. Rainbow Road is always very high in the sky or in space. Having it just on the ground would feel lame and wouldn't fit.

I am going to ALWAYS be of the opinion that Mario Kart 8 Rainbow Road is a really cool track idea, but it is AWFUL for the "Rainbow Road" for the game. Like.. the space station is SUCH a cool idea! It's just not Rainbow Road!
I forgot it was Saturday. New level by level let’s go!
I love rainbow roads so much and my personal fav is 3ds but they are all great
Mario Kart 8's version of 64's version of Rainbow Road should be S tier 😤
I would 100% wanna see a Bowser's Castle Level by Level!
Does anybody else think the art style of double dash is really underrated?
I love rainbow roads for music and nice colors.
You forgot the one in the movie.
Make this top comment so bro remakes the whole video
The funny thing about the Mario Kart 64 Rainbow Road is... it was better in F-Zero X.
This should also be done I
With the bowser castle tracks
As a proud member of the prestigious SNES Rainbow Road from Super Circuit fandom, I’m extremely devastated at you placing it in F Tier, I’m still seething rn
Mario kart 7 was the first Mario kart game on my own console(I’m a pro in every Mario kart game even if I didn’t play it)
I consider Mario Kart 64's Rainbow Road to be the beginner's Rainbow Road.
You could also say it takes so long to finish a race on N64 RR that your dad came back WITH THE MILK
Your Getting Close To 200K!😮 Can’t Wait For That Video HoHooooo😊
I’m mad you didn’t describe the tour variants so there can be a 5th SNES version💀
I love the rainbow roads. I always love playing them. Except MK8's.
6:25 The yellow bars were in the Mario Kart Wii version of GBA Bowser Castle 3.
If anything, the track is just an endurance test more than much else, which is certainly an interesting choice.
level by level is still my favorite series from you
anyways useless Super Mario Maker 2 facts #4 when?
Rainbow Road is so evil and I love it. SNES rainbow road was the second track I made my friend play when I taught him how to play.
Can’t wait until pink gold baby peachette is added to mairo kart 10.
i think you should play on the game cube man! its great, it feels very different from the other mario karts
Don’t trust the people who think Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival is good
