    I want to take a moment to appreciate Captain Raoul de Beaudean, of the Île de France. While there were financial concerns about turning his ship around, he knew his company would not question his decision to turn around if the ship's services were needed. I've read so many accounts of disasters where financial concerns exacerbated the situation, so I want to recognize Captain Beaudean's courage to make what would turn out to be a lifesaving choice.

    My mother, her brother, and parents were all on the Andrea Doria when it was hit. My mother, her father and brother were thrown into one lifeboat and my grandmother was thrown into another. Those lifeboats were picked up by The Ile de France and The Private Thomas, respectively. My grandmother is seen in this documentary at 22:37, very stoically searching for her family.

    It’s nice to watch one of these where the people get some luck on their side, even when you have the area it would still be hard to find a small lifeboat in a vast ocean 👍

    Excellent! Thank you Mark. The Andrea Doria and her sinking is fascinating. I’ve only found three or four videos/documentaries on TH-cam about her. I have not seen this one! I hope all is well, and again, glad you are back. Thanks again Mark

    I remember watching the news footage of this as a kid back in 1956. Why was there no mention of actress Ruth Roman who was on board with her son also and they survived?

      Yes they survived, but they were separated in the evacuation. Dickie was put into one of the Stockholm's lifeboats, and onboard he was looked after by another passenger. His mother and nanny were rescued by the Ile de France

    A part of this story that isn’t often told is:Much of the crew behaved abhorrently and were amongst the first to board lifeboats…it was like the exact opposite of titanic where British civility and chivalry were upheld to the last by near all of the crew, even the band. That said the ships officers and engineering staff weren’t among these cowards, who were mostly service staff like cooks, stewards and the like. The officers and engineers only left after the last (except one straggler) passengers were off the ship. The captain, of course suicidal at the time wanted to remain aboard and go down with the ship but was talked out of it, thankfully, as his testimony would be invaluable in telling the events of the night and morning of the accident. Many of the Brits, especially titanic enthusiasts look at the cowardice of over 3/4 of Doris’s crew as proof of the superiority of Edwardian British values, culture and breeding and I partially agree with them. I’m interested to see what everyone else here thinks, please reply.

    • @cayasta1970

      Yes, those superior Edwardian British value that let die most of the people from the Third Class, drowned or due to hypothermia. In the case it was not "much of the crew" but only some people aborard the first lifeboat reportedly were from the kitchen staff: they decided to descend into the boat since most of the terrorized passengers refused to do so or were strongly hesitant to abandon the Doria to get into the dark sea. Also, most of the passengers who descended in the first two lifeboats wore lifejacket that some of the stewards handed over to them: these life jackets for the staff were grey (those dedicated to passengere were bright red) and thus added confusion about how many of the rescued were actually passengers or staff.

    • @yrooxrksvi7142
      @yrooxrksvi7142 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What a disgustingly chauvinistic comment. The "superior Edwardian values" lead to more than half of the people who were on board the Titanic to be left stranded due to the ineptude of folks such as 2nd Officer Lightoller, twisting "Women and children first" into "Women and children only", leading to countless men deaths, or the demonization of J.Bruce Ismay for simply getting into a lifeboat while there was no other passengers left. Or boarding half empty lifeboats, or resorting to firing shots to disperse the panicked crowd, or leaving 3rd class passengers trapped inside the corridor maze of the ship. Cease your blatant racism and take off your nostalgia rose tinted glasses.
