It's fun. Well-paced. Doesn't turn my brain into complete mush. And Duke Su is pure eye candy. What more can I ask for after a long day of work lol

He is pure eye candy in this and I love the floating hair/ribbons etc.. No matter if a guy or a girl being admired by someone intensely they do that dreamy thing to emphasize how the other person feels about seeing their love interest and I find it so much fun.
I think the most appealing thing about The Double is the main couple. He is a MAN, she is a WOMAN, both of flesh and blood. Not static plaster figures like we see in other dramas. They don't need to touch: they are both ATTRACTED, there is passion there, and you can smell that on the screen. The plot will be predictable, but it has a rhythm and action that other dramas do not have. Let's not ask for more: as entertainment, it is well done. It was released without much promotion, and has achieved an unexpected Click " in the audience. OK.

I totally agree. Drama is not real life. There sometimes a lot of creative license taken, continuity and logic errors. It is make belie a for that reason, the only thing that matters is if it engaging and entertaining. the script should be well written and characters developed and progressed. The director interprets the story makes a lot of choices on the design and look of the drama ss well as directing the actors. The actors should portray their characters to "bring them to life. I understand that some compromises have to be made to please the sensors and the backers. With so many moving parts there are bound to be errors a careful eye will catch. Avenueex gives an insiders opinion of what she sees as good and bad. I actually, am less concerned about things like dubbing, unless it is out of sync. I think almost all dramas are using unnatural lighting. and sometimes costumes and makeup can be over the top. However, I don't care that much about these things. I just care if it is a story that is well told.
I think bc it's a costume drama, I let go the small details. If it was a period drama like Story of Ming Lan, I expect things to be realistic and more accurate. The double is just a good fix for me.
I disagree with some of the review. The drama is totally addicting to watch. The dialogue between FL and ML is sizzling, full of double entendres and hidden meanings. There were no filler side plots--everything went bam, bam, bam and the director did great ending each episode at a point that had me craving the next episode.
The drama's theme is also about Chinese opera plays--the ML is always talking about plays (and his favorite play is watching the FL's revenge show, so it becomes quite fun as he moves around manipulating her like a director). Even the evil people are caricatures like a Chinese opera, twirling around like they're doing Chinese opera steps on stage, waving arms and quoting lines from operas. Note the sleeves-folding movement by SYR as he moved more, e.g.--that's a Chinese opera move. The closeups make them look like Chinese masks, doing soliloquies of their existential condition.
This is my favorite new drama since last year's Lost You Forever. And, in many ways, I kind of like it a bit more because of the revenge factor. The FL definitely stayed smart and cunning before and after the change in identity, unlike, ahem ahem Xiao Liu after she became Princess Xiao Yao.
TL;DR: Highly recommended!

In the early stages, we (viewers) are just given a few facts--that she is related to the previous emperor and is sister to Cheng (the general at the border) and that she was given as a hostage to some other kingdom near the same border. The current emperor appears to tolerate her because of these two things, but of course, there's more to the story. Hope this helps!

@@tashaonly thanks for the explanation. Netflix hasn't loaded all episodes yet so still watching. I reached the part where the doctor says she is pregnant and some back story is shown. I see the emperor is tolerant of her since he punished her. I felt sorry for her backstory but still looking forward to her getting hers.

It captured my heart from the opening scene. I was like THIS IS THE ONE! It gives me goosebumps. I love the actors. I like wu jinyan's face she's not a typical beauty but shes beautiful non the less ..Urgg i love the drama so much.
Me too! Within 2 minutes of watching I said : this is going to be the best drama this year! And it was! Highly recommended. I have come to the conclusion to trust any Wu Jinyan dramas. I want her to act with Wang Xingyue again, not just because they're a couple irl but also because they were able to portray sizzling chemistry and sexual tension between their characters.
I don’t agree with your criticism. This has been one of the better dramas produced in a long time. The storytelling pace is good while most dramas drag out too much. The CGI scene was a visual metaphor of her internal grievances and combined with the music was touching. The identity switch logic wasn’t too bad compared to some other drama like Nirvana in fire (good drama btw) where the main guy gets a whole new face after bitten by a bug. We just accept these explanations for the sake of the story. At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal enjoyment and I’m totally enjoying this show. 🙂

The eeriness of the way fml is in those shots is one of the best parts of the drama for me because from the scenes in the mountain and how she haunts her ex husband it gives me the vibes of she's a ghost that came back from death for revenge. Dressed in white flowy outfits, black loose hair that wind is blowing around her snow white skin, big eyes with eerie expressions
i think the eerie expression on her face is on point of the story. she is supposed to be eerie.

Well said. And very important - for everything in the drama. There was a scene around ep10 when she freaks out her former husband that really gave me goosebumps. Also I begin to comprehend what she went through, things like this happen in real life, during wars for instance. Yet at first we try to skip over those scenes. So it's good to repeat them. Here the plot comes straight from Shakespeare cf. Othello.

I've also watched 17 episodes and would gladly give it 2 gold mines and I'm definitely having fun with it. Can't wait for more episodes where I will totally enjoy the wind in their close-up faces, the petals blowing around them, their voices, their non-expression, the costumes, the usual historical drama tropes of plots trying to get females in compromising positions at the palace and so on.

Honestly, I feel like is You Are My Glory can get 2 gold mines, so can this. But that's just my opinion of someone else's rating system. Still like another poster said, "it somehow works."

In drama, he have lil bit human emotional n feelings for FL in drama from almost on earlier episode where it will be not found in novel, where he just enjoying the FL "play" as if as he watch her action like an opera, and he is just the audience. He never help the FL even she is in dire situation, just simply enjoy to watch her struggling n pretending. Until FL make a deal and death contract agreement with him, then he willing lend to help. His character is more intriguing, unpredictable, interesting n unique in novel. Not just cold n cool like in drama, but he just simply dont have human emotion on him anymore, all peoples he treated like a players on opera. coz he have been used to life to not have any human emotion. It's really a long process when he have his called 'weakness' again, a human emotion that he dont want have n try to kill.

I thought Wang XingYue uses his own voice. That is HIS voice if I'm not hearing wrong. And Youku/ the production team or his team idk who exactly posted his dubbing session for the drama.
There's a also nothing new in the review, it's all the raging complaints I've been seeing on reddit about the drama. The plotholes that people keep complaining about, I don't really see them. It may be too fast-paced, camera wise not too great, dialogue wise too eloquent, but the drama is fun and a very good watch.
I’m just here to watch and enjoy a drama after a tiring day. This drama is good so far in my opinion and most of us are loving it a lot.
I’m a professional classical musician…and the music competition is really like the big music competitions…there are hinky judges and judges who favor their (former) students and then there is the judge who is honest and true (who they ignore). The CGI was a little over the top but I like the idea that they wanted to convey that the music told a story in such a powerful way that the audience could experience and understand the story. One of the reasons that the Four Seasons by Vivaldi is so loved is that it has very specific renderings of what happens in the seasons (birds in Spring, people slip on ice in Winter, etc…and in fact these comments were put in the score by Vivaldi himself). All great music works are actually telling a very human story of some kind…that is why they are so deeply felt.
I love the story. You can’t take it as a realistic drama. You have to like it for the story.
I'm so glad you are reviewing this drama! It really caught my eye, and it is very entertaining for an idol period drama. Although there are some nonsensical points, as there always is, I'm able to overlook them because of the entertaining storyline and cinematography. It's shot much less dramatically than many other idol dramas too, which is a huge plus. I do wish that the color grading was more stylized and the shots were cohesive because if they pushed this drama further artistically, I think it would have done really well.

LOL i like the drama at the moment but I'm glad i wasn't the only one who was bothered by the extreme close ups. The close ups just makes the fact some of the actors/actresses eyes are lopsided. I'm speaking from someone who also has uneven eyes and it definitely just sticks out like a sore thumb up close.
I have square jaws, and with all the close ups I noticed that the FL also has 1 squarish jaw. If they film her from a distance it's not noticeable, but up close we really see the asimetry.

@@mrseskasi exactly, or even uneven eye placement? These are people, not CGI... There were a lot of closeups, yes, but I felt the director was making a strong ,memorable, artistic statement for each scene and the drama as a whole.
This is my drama of the year so far. The latest episode was an emotional rollercoaster. I don’t want it to end and I have a feeling it’s just heating up. Logic isn’t perfect but honestly it’s too good to care. And the chemistry, while rare… so good.
I read the novel and im currently watching the show. Although there are of course some changes to the story, the live action is actually quite interesting and fun the chemistry of the lead actors are great, plus the lead actor is charming and can act. 😂❤
After read the novel, kinda disappointed how the writer change the ML character to be more "human" and have human emotion, he even shows his interest (feelings) since early episode on FL. It will be great if the drama writer can stick with ML character in novel to apply in drama, coz his character is really unique. Not just simply cold n cool. But he really dont have human emotion anymore, all just play n he treats peoples just like players in opera. It's really have a long process when he started have human emotion again even he despise that. Coz he been used to lives without human emotion anymore, coz he dont want have any weakness (he even get scared n choose to stay away from FL when he found out he couldn't kill her after their agremeent is fulfilled. That how determined he want to throw away his weakness, the human emotion. But in the end, love win all 😅) its feels more impactful when he find his emotion again than in drama.

This drama has me so excited, mostly because I really, really want these villains brought to justice. It’s been an amazing rollercoaster of emotions concerning the ex-hubby and revelations which follow. I do so love a three dimensional villain. Yeah, the visual representation of her music was cringe. Would have been so much better to use clips of her life and subsequent betrayal and “rebirth,” but alas. However, they did make it up with some stunning scenes such as the intimate moment in the rain. The OST, the camera shots, the acting…it was gorgeous all-around. And can I say that it’s nice to see a FL reacting to a hunky body not with exaggerated ogling or embarrassment but with simple lustful appreciation. Perhaps it’s because her character was married before or maybe it’s just her overall unique maturity, but I find her frankness appealing…as much as I find his insistence on social norms amusing.
i know, the spend the night at the duke's house part was illogical too, but, they already showed the young lady being put up in her own apartment...where the family does not come to check on her...the maid had to cover up for her, i suppose. it was not a family that eats together or anything.
Sometimes todays morality creeps into dramaland. It would not have been appropriate for the Princess to take a lover that wasn't much of a secret either. Not to mention the times the Duke calls XFF and she has to see him immediately and its not like he calls her discretely. He seems to do it quite publicly. As she says, she is a lady with a tarnished reputation to start with as the real Jiang Li already had her reputation ruined to start with. The heroine did a lot of things that women of her day and status would never do, so a lot of creative license was taken there.
Wang Xing Yue act are powerful! He is dominant in acting. Extremely talented! By surprise he is only 22 y.o.

She was very critical on Till The of the Moon and that was a good drama. Here she's critical of this drama The Double which is the best product from chinese dramas in years. My conclusion is that sometimes she nitpicks too much. Shows are still supposed to entertain and if they do, then the job is done.
I feel this drama is quite entertaining and it keeps me hooked…I keep wanting to watch more at the end of each episode 😊.
I'm a long time follower of your channel but I have noticed that recently you are in some negative mood for a while. Nothing makes you happy or interested. Current reviewing is losing your energie you had before. Actually a lot of dramas this year have their flaws but they do have some good and interesing points which attracts audience. In my opinion, way better than year 2023. Emitting negative energie could become a habbit if it prolongs, which will harm your own health and of course the channel as well.
I would suggest, that maybe you could pause the review for a while, do some drama related culture topics like you did before, which I really enjoyed a lot. Chinese poem, history, or some old dramas which you like a lot etc. When you regain your energie, then come back.
I think a good example is 'The Cinematic Themes and Visuals of Ancient China' by Accented Cinema. He did a serial of compilation and explaination videos of all the historical setting with chinese dramas and films in a chronological order. I would love to see your version of it. Or maybe an episode of the development of Wu Xia dramas and films. Or maybe an episode of all the dramas and films about the female Emperor Wu Zi Tian. It woud be fun to watch these kind of compilation videos.

So far it's pretty interesting, nothing particularly new or innovative but engaging. I read the novel (or tried to) and I can't finish it despite it being my guilty pleasure (I love Transmigration novels), so I'm glad that the drama is more interesting as is the intention between the MLs. Even so, I find many scenes very cringey but the opposite of making me angry, it kills me with laughter at the ridiculousness. For me it is the perfect drama to have in the background while reading a novel.
So, in the novel, she ends up in the body of Jiang Li…interesting…then no one would be mistaking her for her old self. Why couldn’t you finish the novel (transmigration/revenge novels are my thing).

Agreed. The CGI in the exam was so ridiculous I just skipped over it altogether. Episode 20& 21 are even more ridiculous. People call her by her real name, her 3rd uncle is right behind her, but somehow he doesn't hear it and a few scenes later even has a moronic conversation with her used to reconfirm that he 100% believes she is his niece. Buuuut, considering there's nothing to watch now - Chinese or Korean, and that Wang Xing Yue is really pretty to look at - why not keep watching the drama? 🤣

Read the novel. The characters is more ten times better than in drama, including jiang li's uncle. Xoz in novel he is more like a a scary bandit (he only being like a rabbit in front of his niece), not like a comic relief in drama. And duke su character is more intriguing in novel. He is not just a cold n cool. But completely dont have human emotion anymore. He treats all people just like opera players which is will not affected to his emotion as the audience (no attachment at all). So when he slowly change, it feels more impactful. Coz he been used to live without human emotion

I’m having so much fun watching The Double. Once you accept the physics in the universe in this drama, it’s even more entertaining. 😁 acting from the ML and FL are of course 👌🏼

Pretty sure there's a video out there of the recording process. The CG is over the top, but what were you expecting with the glorious leaf-blower intro scenes and ridiculous use of slowmo and close up? I expected nothing less tbh 🤣🤣🤣 I think the drama fulfills its purpose as an idol drama and a source of entertainment.

I’m on episode 7 and so impressed so far. I love the male lead and his handsome voice. I love the beautiful aesthetic and totally don’t mind all the wind blowing lol. I am digging the dramatic music, the banter between the leads, the comedic moments, the pace, and the colors. The male leads looks so good in red and black. I get you on the female lead and although I like her, her weird fake smile is creepy. Also she is really pretty and more unique looking. Overall I’m loving it!

I really found your channel just to validate why i stopped watching dramas too early/before they were finished. Everyone was raving about how goof this drama was even though i had the sneaking suspicion that they were lying, but i gave it a chance and it turns out i shouldve listened to my intuition.
Also, the casting threw me off. The girl she's supposed to be impersonating was so much younger than her, even visually that family was on drugs when they accepted her as their daughter. And that dead and zoned out look observation was so real! I dont know why no one talked about it while they were raving about the drama. Ultimately those close up shots with the dead and zoned out look really just creeped me out very early on and i had to stop forcing myself to enjoy it. I unfortunately (for this drama) really enjoy logic too, so this was not a great fit for me. I wish the audience had more of a backbone.
Oh my god i just so agree with the close up scenes. It just make me feel like watching an old-school Bollywood movie. Like it's okay in Bollywood movies, but not in this drama. This actually prevent me from continue watching the drama, though the lead's chemistry is so good.
I love this drama. Everyone is actually pretty fun to watch, even the bad people. Usually the guards next to the ML, I tend to find annoying and even this drama they are hilarious. There is always something going on and I enjoy the CP chemistry. 🔥❤️

I disagree with your analysis. Wang Xinyue is 22 years old. Sure he doesn't have the polish of a seasoned actor and he hasn't had many opportunities to play good lead parts in well financed dramas. He is usually a supporting character and better than the lead. he almost always plays someone older than his real age. Only in One and Only did he play a character close to his age. He is still a very talented actor who deserves better opportunities to showcase his talents. As far as technical quality issues, I am not that aware of that as long as it isn't glaring. I prefer the actors to have natural skin tones and imperfections then be unnaturally pale. I do agree that because the drama is 40 episodes, they have put too many obstacles for the characters to overcome in the drama at the expense of character development. Still, it is entertaining. After all, even though this is not a fantasy drama, it is not real life either. If you are going to watch a drama, you have to be willing to accept the impossible as possible. Although, I do agree that the FL is a bit too perfect, seeing through every trap and being able to do everything well like riding, archery, Qin, writing poetry and thesis, elegance which should be a red flag for everyone because supposedly she has lived in a prison for 10 years. She even manages to blackmail the bad guys to keep her secrets. The emperor in this drama is young, but he is easily swayed by the crazy sister. He is probably the weakest character around. This drama does have some characters that take it out of its revenge/hate mode that are entertaining like how the two lazy maids get their come uppence. and the FL cousin Rui, who is childishly steadfastly loyal even though his strength is trickery. He Feng Tian is too old to play a teenager, but he has a lot of depth playing different characters, giving each character their own identity (Pavillian master in Untouchable lovers). Wu Jin Yan, is a dancer, but is also a capable actress. In this drama she plays a complex character, one that has been betrayed, calculating/vengeful, passive aggressive at times, smart, loyal, but never wide eyed dumb. I don't think the wooden look you attribute to her is fair. .

After watching so many cdramas, i dare say 90% of it doesn't really need rational or logical thinking, so i already gave up on using my brain long ago and just enjoy any ride of cdramas that piqued my interest. Also the only thing bothers me about this story is simply how the heck FL still alive after being buried unconcscious.. but other than that, compared to any dramas within it's genre/released these few months, this one's highly entertaining and interesting and i enjoy it very much

Im really lazy to watch dramas these days but this drama caught my eyes...if we ignore some unrealistic elements of the plot its good, i like the ml character nd also the fl but sometimes i didnt catch her character well nd sometimes her make up is so white that she looks like a ghost..but over all its a good watching so far

I watched this drama. Just watched without over analyzing anything and invested on the story and the lead couple. I love the chemistry and the acting of the main leads. Love, love this drama! Only complaint is they upload new episodes too slow here in the US.
Recently got into medical school, so whenever I get time I turn my brain off so this drama has been pretty good so far.
An avid fan of Chinese dramas and make a point to watch all your recommendations and have never been disappointed. Thank you always for taking us through the good and bad and your outfits that goes along with your review are priceless.

I loved your comments and I love this drama and I’m looking forward to seeing it all the way through the 40 episodes. As a novice to Asian drama - and an English speaking viewer relying on subtitles- this is one of the better Chinese dramas I’ve seen. It’s funny you brought up the voice dubbing… Many of the Chinese dramas I’ve seen had terrible Sound quality, but I think this one’s much much better but you can tell it slightly off. Again, as somebody who’s new to Chinese dramas, this doesn’t bother me at this point. I love both of the main characters, dig their acting, I think some of the scenes have been incredibly sexy, beautifully videoed, and pretty decent use of music(for instance it’s subtle and not overwhelming the voiceover).
As someone who relies on subtitles, how are the translations for this drama? For me, occasionally I have to stop the video and go back because they moved the subtitle forward too fast or just didn’t make sense, which is unusual. Normally they just don’t translate it which frustrates me no end. Would appreciate your opinion.

I agree with everything you said, however, since when is the period dramas are logical or without tropes?😂 Some of the camera usage & hair-flying/slow motion was cringe worthy but it was funny! I thoroughly enjoyed it compared to 9.5 out of 10 period dramas I’ve seen daily as I mainly like period dramas only. I think you are too critical/harsh with the comments/rating compared to other period dramas you have reviewed. At least, this drama have some substance with their dialogues and lengthy arguments compared to other dramas with very short dialogues- they are NOT boring! There are many situations that is supporting the ML/FL- which dramas isn’t? At least the supporting actors/actresses have substantial lines. Therefore, I recommend this drama (noted it’s not perfect!)

The head shots remind me of the morphing shots directors sometimes use. My problem is the story itself. For example, why spend so much time on that stupid competition when the theme is revenge on the stepmother and also her ex-husband the murderer? Also, this drama is similar to Dream of Splendor, which is much more on-point and stick to the story. The school/competition stuff has been shown in many other drama (e.g. Time flies and you are there) and they also are better done.
Well school competition was on point. Because Fanfei wanted to ask for a imperial reward. That’s why she wanted to win.
If you remember she asked The Emperor to grant her wish to become a disciple of Shen YiRong. I think she wants to infiltrate and find about more info about their scheme

I just finished on Netflix and it’s really good, I finished in two weeks (yesterday the last episodes were released), there are some things that are obviously ridiculous like the playing of the instruments and I also didn’t love the ending, mainly bc of the adding of an alternative ending, but overall it’s really entertaining and fun to watch.
I usually agree for the most part with your reviews, but not this time. I thoroughly enjoyed The Double. It was edgy and artistic, at least that's how I viewed the choices for the flowing hair, ribbons, petals and etc. It was presented as art. The 'conveniences' that bothered you are in so many dramas, and yes it made this story work, but it was a fun story. I disagree all the side characters were tools to move the plot along. Her ex husband and the crazy princess were multi faceted, cruel, crazy, sad, yearning and haunting characters.I was never bored once and really liked that the FL's character outsmarted her foes.. I get so tired of the FL's character constantly stomped on and can never win, this was an awesome, enjoyable change. Duke Su was eye candy personified, and while I thought Wu Jin Yan looked too old for the role, I didn't let it bother me. Sure you can find fault, but it's entertainment, and I was completely entertained.

A couple of years ago a friend of mine asked for recommendations, I told her not to use logic while watching most Cdramas or else she would have a long list of unfinished dramas. She is now as obsessed, as I am.

I noticed lately that in chinese drama land, high budget anticipated dramas end up flopping, and such random dramas like The Double end up being hidden gems, which attract many viewers.
I don't remember seeing any of the leads before. The ML is indeed eyecandy, and looks so dashing in red.
There are some weird scenes and ofcourse some flaws in logic, but this is still the most watchable drama I have seen lately.
I heard in the original novel she takes over the body of the girl which dies? So like a sort of possession. I assume because of censorship they had to change that narrative.
Oh as i am not that picky i think the good acting, right pace and interesting storyline is fine with me. I didnt realize i watched 20 episodes already. The main lead have good chemistry also although the age gap is there.

As much as I love this drama, the scene in which Jiang Li plays the zither and the CGI just randomly pops up is ridiculous.
lol i've binged watched it & loving it. I think it has some comedic elements, those close ups & slow motion & hair blowing scenes are so ridiculous that I just laugh every time.
I've actually read this novel and also read others with similar plots. But this is the first time I've actually watched one so I'm actually enjoying it. Just have some nitpicks on OG Jiang Li's death, like her makeup should have been more sickly and pale. And also her clothes should have more blood lol
But I actually like this identity switching better than the time travelling and taking over Jiang Li's body. It really added some spice for those who knew FL's face.
I'm only at ep 6, but it's pretty enjoyable. I try not to nitpick much so maybe that's why I like this drama.
I personally liked the both leads acting in relation to this story. Like its not Oscar worthy or Emmy worthy but both have enough charm to make it work. Ofc if i solely focussed on acting while watching the drama, i would found flaws and their imperfections but because the plot was immersive enough i didn't find myself doing it. Its not perfect but its enjoyable popcorn flix, like a decently made Soap opera show
Didn't Wang Xing Yue do his own dub? Initially i did have some issue with him not really moving his mouth much when saying a dialogue, like it looked so much low effort and unbelievable when compared to the audio it gave. Maybe because it was given that it would be dubbed so he didn't feel like using his energy to use his mouth. But the overall acting of his soon overcame any previous awkwardness.
I get what you are saying about some acting moments of Wu Jinyan but she does deliver well closeups when it has to do with showcasing fear, sadness or trauma.
Many actors/actresses often lack consistency when it comes Reaction Shots because i guess after so many takes it becomes tiring and usually the director should be on top of his game to make sure actors give 1-2 good takes for Reactions and editors make it less awkward by spending less time on these cuts
The OTT gets better in the later episodes I think. I am enjoying the drama a lot. I think part of it is some of the actors are familiar but many not for me. The lead female character was really fun when she was drunk.

The moment I saw the first episode, I thought that this drama has some similarity to something that I couldn't pin point. After watching this video, I remembered the ridiculousness in go princess go. I can very well say that both of these dramas give a very similar vibes.😂😂
