I think if they make a season two and give all the characters and their story a reasonable closure many criticism would disappear… they made good foundations for the story as we enjoyed it a lot at first but cause of number of episodes and the ending it left audience so frustrated that they forgot the amazing and fresh sides this series had.

This is the type of drama you become obsessed with because of the idea of what it could’ve been (my case) I’m just so intrigued by the gong family lore, back hill, and wufeng.
That being said I actually loved the main couple. Tv is so swamped by toxic male leads that this ml was the breath of fresh air I’ve been desiring. He’s just so devoted to her!!! ❤❤

I agree that first part of the drama really drew me in. I found the second couple, the friendship of the Gong brothers and the pairing of the Elder Young miss and Jin Fan to be the reasons that kept me coming back. At the end of the drama, I kept thinking that the main lead was unqualified for his role and the Second Young Master should have be in that role. I think the writing made the first couple really unappealing. Why is it that most of the supporting characters and their interactions were more interesting. I didn't see why the male lead was so willing to turn over the world for this woman he just met. At first I was really annoyed at Gong Shangjue and Gong Yuanzhi at first for disrespecting Gong Ziyu but then I changed my mind. I was right on board because Gong Ziyu is a weak leader. I also don't get the storyline with Gong Ziyu's elder brother- that piece didn't make sense. All this being said, I actually really liked the drama up until the last couple episodes. I was pissed with the ending to be honest- I upgraded my IQIYI membership from standard VIP to Premium VIP. I feel like we could come up with a bunch of different theories to figure out what happened. All I know is that Gong Ziyu was going to be in his feelings and break the rules of the sect to go after her probably. It just made me want Gong Shangjue to be the leader even more.

Every Guo Jingming work is criticized for the same things, but yet he is the only producer who got a distinctive style (which I happen to like). He knows what he is good at and gives a perfect picture. As for the whispering part - it got rid of too high female voices, which are used too often in the dramas. This is a drama you watch for the picture, not for the plot.

I liked the drama, I enjoyed the cinematography, art direction, styling, I liked all the characters and may be I'm the rare one but I was all for the main cp over the second leads.Loved how every episode ended with what I didn't see coming, it kept me guessing and I loved the unpredictability of it. But the last 4-5 episodes felt rushed and lacked in editing and that ending pissed me off.
To add: I was so invested in the story of backhill people like give me a whole another drama for them coz I didn't get enough.Oh and also the scoring for the drama was A+ for me, it created the perfect tension and a sense of dread at most times.

I just started this drama these days and have seen a few episodes already.
From an aesthetics perspective I love it very much. It sets itself aside from other C-dramas I have usually seen. I feel this dark aesthetics also fits so well with the current season we are in.
I didn't knew this director worked before on some of my favourite mini series "Painted skin" and "Wuliang". Since I watched those short series I always was looking for something similar in style.
At least this director knows to set himself aside in a sea of copy-paste and try to seek some originality which I personally appreciate.
About the other inconsistencies and weird things like the almost whispering talking and the slow motion scenes, I indeed found it overdone. But I thought it's mostly used to set the viewers into the mood of this show.
Good to know that I have to get ready for a half done ending.

I watch the drama just for Esther Yu. I think she is really underappreciate in this drama. She is really great proving to the audience she is more than what people call her only can act 'cutesy'. Yun Weishan is her first 'proper' serious role, her breakthrough role & i think she really nailed the calm, elegant, gentlr, looks like a weak lady but actually a strong woman, & a tired spy with the reality who only yearning for freedom. The way she learn martial arts, learning dubbing differenciate her vouce to match Yun weishan voice, her dedication to use no stuntman for the mud scene, 36 hours hanging wires in high fever, shooting & arranging every bts & material for every costar, etc etc. I'm justs so sad with the way they gave no proper screentime for Yun Weishan dispite Esther took the most time in shooting & discussing with the drama tean about her role. It's been the second time she got backstabbed by the drama team that she cares so much. I feel really sad for her. At least, I just hope that this role can open a new world for her to get a new opportunity to get a better drama production team, a better project, a better crew, a better screenwriter, a better director, a better costar, a better role & all the best thing for her. Hope she will meet and work with a drama prod team that as enthusiastic, sincere and really care for her, not just take all her effort and hardwork for granted 🙏❤

In a foreigner's cdrama fan standpoint, I find this drama is really enjoying to watch. At first I did find the way they talk to be weird, I was like "why are they whispering?" Then, I just ignored it. I do agree though, that YuShuxin and Zhang Linghe had a little chemistry, the realtionship had a wonky development that I find it quite underwhelming when they all of a sudden had a kiss scene. Their relationship had less development than Jinfan and Zi Shang. Yun Wei Shan remained the same all through out, but I thought she would have more involvement on the story, and have more development as a spy, but somehow, the person who was more involved as Wufeng's spy was Lady Wuji and Shangguan.

My take on this drama is quite different from yours. I would give it a solid two gold bars. I was totally blown away by the look, so different from most wuxia dramas. The foreboding atmosphere and soundtrack drew me in immediately. The complicated characters and the mission they were on was endlessl intriguing. The main lead was sympathetic with a history of personal losses and great challenges to survive in his clan position. Maybe the way he was quickly besotted by the female lead was somewhat naive but it eventually held him in good stead as she ended up going against her indoctrination. The brooding second lead and his coterie adds tension and conflict. The elder, young Miss is a delight and her passion pays off. Other supporting figures and the many layers to this story switching between front hill and back hill history is fascinating.
Can't agree with any of the criticism as to the supposed Japanese look, really? the eyebrows are a problem?, slo-mo and people talking in a drama are not a problem to watch given it sets a tone and is interesting because they should be acting and impress me as the audience, fighting scenes were satisfying. Yes, the ending is rushed maybe that comes with trying to do this in 24 episodes and it does leave questions unanswered so I would love to see a season two.

The sets, costuming, even vampiric look to the characters was one of the main selling points of this one for me. It's not that I want everything to be shot this way, just that it was a huge departure from the bright and sunny atmosphere of so many Chinese dramas. I particularly loved the use of jet beading and shiny/reflective fabrics to add detail and depth to the costuming when so much of it is basically shot in a dark room with a lamp on in the corner waaaaaay over there. With such stupidly attractive actors, their pale faces _became_ the emphasis for me, and I enjoyed being drawn in by that.
For a first-time actor, Tian Jia Rui was amazing, and he is on my list of actors to watch in the future. He sold me on his character, even if the character was heavily let down by the plot. He's cast in Guo Jing Ming's upcoming Fangs of Fortune, so I'll get him on screen, but I'll be a huge skeptic about the storyline going into it.
Unfortunately, this drama had so much going for it. I was actually surprised at most of the cliffhanger reveals, which is rare. But the exposition from the mastermind was one I wanted to listen to while washing dishes by hand (which I don't do willingly). There are thousands of storytelling methods which could have hinted at these things throughout rather than a huge dump of uselessness. It was ultimately useless, because at that point in the story, all the damage had been done, so him being behind it wasn't even interesting anymore. And did we really need another "I've had a tough life" character in a privileged family being infiltrated by women who really _have_ had a tough life to try to break into that secret garden? There wasn't enough worldbuilding for me to understand how the back hill ended up there, why, and how it factored into the larger world. So while I want more, I want less, you know?

It’s actually a really good drama compared to every other periodic Chinese dramas. Loved the look of the costumes, cinematography, and mainly aesthetics in general. The director did a good job making every character look really good
Like the male leads 1 & 2, but also female leads too, especially female lead 2, she is gorgeous because of the Directors vision/aesthetics! oooof i’ve watched the whole thing just for their looks LOL. but I think it is because it’s different from your typical Chinese periodic drama that it has to leave us with a “you interpret what happened” ending…. Which literally gave me a whiplash but I wasn’t surprised

Absolutely agree with the pacing/length of episodes, long ass dialogues, & not giving a crap about the leads storyline & watching for the 2nd leads/brothers. One the dramas I hopped on before you came out with a review. Eventually dropped it because I could care less for the lead’s storyline/chemistry & it felt slow/dragging. Dropped this for the drama “Faithful” & glad it did.
    1. Started ep 1, & unconsciously kept looking at when the episode would end. Only drama I have ever done that to. Literally questioned myself if it was because I was watching to much short drama. 😂
    2. Literally sat watching characters go back & forth on dialogues just felt like a waste of my time & the characters time.
    3. I only been watching the short clips & cuts of the 2nd leads & brother if I could find any on TH-cam. Esther & Zhang Linghe could not sold me. Maybe this maybe be unbiased because I didn’t watch the other drama with Wang Hedi & Esther.

    • @Dee-eh3tt

Yup.. I was glad that in the other drama (Love between fairy and demon) they didn't end up together as tbh I don't find this girl beautiful enough to be female lead in any drama. Her lips look too fake and facial features are ordinary compared to many other actresses in C-drama who look like dolls and can act as good too. I didn't like the chemistry between Zhang Ling He and her in any of their dramas.
Honestly, I feel that the director only invested into good looking MLs but could only find 2nd FL and Yun's younger sister as pretty as they should be. All other FLs were just too ordinary in looks compared to their MLs. The sister's character was rather annoying and unrealistic than funny and cute.
In terms of story line, I think it was pretty good story and with some great dialogues could have been weaved and told even better. But, the ending was disastrous knowing the fact that most C dramas never manage to bring S2, they should have utilised the cast and plot to give a proper ending. Considering almost 1 hour on each episode, they only needed one extra episode to wind up the story properly. Anyways, it was a 50-50 experience for me for this show, although I would give 10/10 to all the supporting actors (two brothers, 2nd FL, Wuji, back hill boys and wufeng boys.)

@@Dee-eh3tt I was going to comment on Esther’s looks but afraid her fans are gonna come after me. Likewise, I don’t find her looks to be appealing as a main lead material & her acting/voice is not cut for me. I was shook that they casted the 2nd female lead for her role (shook as in they did Esther even dirty by casting someone so visually gorgeous on screen). I have watched another drama with the 2nd female lead so I known her before this drama & her acting in this drama is so much different to what she has shown (in a good way). I’m sure Esther stays afloat in the industry because of her family’s rich background. I mean great for her to have a strong backing in a competitive industry.

I totally agree with you - it started beyond my expectation. I really enjoyed the tone of the series and how well the action scenes were made. Then I got frustrated with how the story became so unpromising and illogical (with lots and lots of unnecessary super slow pace). Even though I’m a big fan of the male lead, I totally lost interest with the character and felt disappointed with how the rest of the characters (from such a powerful and supposed to be super smart “organization - families”) deal with the situations -- it’s just weird.

I enjoyed it immensely due to the different type of story and also because I loved that Esther Yue was playing a serious role without her puckered lips and puffed out cheeks; which I find adorable in the right drama, of course. So this one had her doing a very mature part. I loved the coloring to go along with the spy games and mystery aura and it gave it that dark chilling effects. I got bothered by the martial arts and how it was slow mo and too fast in other places and you couldn't see the true art of the martial arts. But it still was good enough to keep my attention, which many dramas lose my attention and I FF to get through it. Loved loved loved the sister, she was the wonderful comic relief and the actress who played her was brilliant. Love Jin Yan but the brothers were on my enemy list until they showed another side of themselves. This is that kind of drama where you KNOW that you KNOW that you KNOW, there will be a Season 2. However, they should have done a back-to-back Part 1 & 2 like they did Blue Whisper, because in Dramaland, it takes years to get S2. Look for instance, we are finally getting S2 of Joy Of Life and we wonder when we will see S2 of Sword Snow Stride, if ever. So that is a major drawback here. Why didn't they just do S2 on the same set? Well probably contract obligations of some of the actors. BUT we all will be pretty angry if any of the characters of this very good power drama, do not return. Leaving just ONE out will ruin things I think. I rated it a 9.5 because it was that good. End of story.

Thank you for the review, I've been eagerly awaiting your take on this.
To be honest, I was extremely excited to see this drama, especially with how cool the trailer looked. I thought there would be intense drama and all that. I mean seeing Esther Yu and Zhang Linghe reunite after LBFAD was a major factor of why I watched it an stuck through it.
I believe, the main couple was supposed to be displayed as the non toxic one versus the other main couple, but, oh dear, that was so badly written. Having seen these two in LBFAD I know they could actually make it work, but something felt off and incomplete throughout the episodes.
I particularly liked the colour pallette and costumes and now I know why haha since it's the same director as YingYang Master Dream of Eternity, a film which I quite liked.
Also as a Mandarin learner hearing them speak slowly and softly and being able to understand them, made me feel really proud of myself haha. But then again, if people acted like that in a series in my native language I'd probably want to gauge my eyes out.
I hope they do a season two. I hope they hire a new writer who can fix the mess at the end.
So for people wondering whether they should watch it or not, I do recommend it, there are worse dramas out there tbh. Visually it's very pleasing, the 1 to 1 fights are fluid and spectacular to watch. The soundtrack is reminiscent of LBFAD. The only thing is that half way through it just doesn't make much sense.

Ranters pointed out a few hilarious plot problems:
    1. Leader dies and whichever potential heir is around will ascend - because a message tattooed on the deceased leader's back needs to to copied onto the new leader's back.
    a. Don't they have paper to copy down the message?
    b. Everyone else might see the message except for the leader himself.
    2. Gong clan cannot produce enough heirs in a period setting that doesn't ban having multiple wives but they insist on one-husband one-wife tradition.
    3. Poison that the evil assassin group uses to control their agents turns out to be a beneficial supplement. This group isn't so bad after all.
    4. Assassin group "hinting" there is an assassin among the potential brides when Gong clan hasn't suspected one and expecting the clan would not further consider the possibility of more planted assassins.
    5. Gong 2 allowing 3 suspected assassins to clear one another.
    6. Assassin group keeps sending female assassins to Gong clan. These women keep falling for Gong men. Might as well have an open marriage alliance between the two organizations then rule jianghu together.

Lmfao yeah the no. 1 point (Absent Inheritance Rule) is what left me miffed at the very beginning, it is so stupid. And without this stupid rule, there wouldn't be this drama so I can't just ignore it. Whoever is around when the previous clan leader dies becomes the leader? That's the recipe for getting incompetent leaders which surely doesn't fit with the theme of Gong clan being the strongest. And it's not that the elder brother is long gone and his return is uncertain, he literally just would come back a few days later. In that case, you'd always have to keep one brother all time at home in case someone dies. And who is the most likely to stay at home all time if not the most incompetent brother who can't do shit? So why do y'all get surprised pikachu face when that bro does indeed become the leader?

    • @aleksandrasucur8615
      @aleksandrasucur8615 ปีที่แล้ว

Evidently, the ranters didn't attentively followed the plot, otherwise they wouldn't miss:
      1. The tattoo is not "a message" but a code of the utmost secret of the Gongs whose chief/sword beholder is a sort of 'carrier' and the code is supposed to be passed down only to the next chief. If this code contains a method to activate their secret weapon (Infinite Fire), would the ranters still copy it on the paper? Eg. would they copy activation codes for nukes on paper or in clouds?
      2. The Gong clan lives in a human-unfriendly environment. Why would they risk lives/health of many women when they can select one healthiest and most resistent (to the environment) in order to reproduce themselves? (Btw. when the entire foundation of the Gongs is "storing their secrets" dealing with one woman is also more logical than dealing with many: it's easier)
      3. So what? We, the audience, do not know much about Wufeng. We know, there are not so bad persons, like FL's coach or FL's sister who was brutally killed not by the Gongs but by Wufeng. We are not told the entire story, the beneficial supplement passed as poison could be the idea of some other "good person" in that group.
      4. Irrelevant. On their side, Wufeng got a message from a long time ago from a spy (Wuming, Madam Wu) that the best way of inflitrating the Gong mountain is their bride-selection, this event is their weak spot. After that message, they haven't heard from her and if we (including ranters) were Wufeng, maybe we would also try this way of deception.
      5. Ridiculous.
      6. 😂I like this one.

    • @keekeepod
      @keekeepod ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@aleksandrasucur86151. But I remember seeing someone behind the person copying the code. Also, what about 1b, anyone might chance upon seeing the leader's bare back. If FL actually or any of the previous planted assassins did their job, code wouldn't be a secret. This is no better than temporarily copying it down and safeguarding it. I'm certain that nuke codes are not tattooed onto those who are keeping it safe. I doubt they even memorize it. There are steps involved.
      2. If they can pick one "healthiest" woman for each man, they can pick more in future years. "Healthiest" doesn't necessarily translate to quality, quantity and/or gender of offsprings. One reason for multiple wives is ancient agrarian society needed all the labor it could produce. Women's productive reproductive timeframe tend to be shorter than men's. Take into account the ending - ML let his one and only wife go visit relatives(?) alone. Return date unknown. If she didn't return or something happened to her reproductive organs, would he marry another? 2nd ML let his pregnant wife go. Was it a divorce, would he marry another? At this point, much ado about marriage and heirs resulted in nothing.
      3. Not irrelevant if viewers are supposed to believe that the assassin org is pure evil to contrast it with the good righteous Gong clan. "If it weren't as bad as it was made out to be..." likely leads to some come up with 6. A few mentioned that in the long history of this org, had no one missed an "antidote" due to various circumstances while on assignment and found out about the "poison"?
      4. This is about the current group of brides. The whole point was there wasn't any indication that the Gong clan suspected planted assassins among them. Once alerted, why would Gong clan believe there was just one assassin? If ML's father actually did the stupid thing of killing all the potential brides (and making enemies of innocent ones' families plus ruining the clan's reputation), all for nothing. ML should've thought about it and do nothing, instead of revealing the compound's secret passage, but I would rationalize it as his not taking chance with innocent lives.
Even though it appears that they did suspect more and 2nd ML did pick out three suspects, he let one suspect interrogate another and let the third be the observer, without anyone else present.

I am obsessed with the second couple. Their chemistry is sizzling. Never knew this drama until I saw it on a flight and I got hooked.

    I like the drama
And the chemistry between Linghe and Xin Xin is good. There is a chemistry on them but they focus on the second lead. I hope there is a season 2 on it.

The biggest thing that bothered me and became laughable was that everyone had teary eyes when they had conversations throughout the whole drama. As if one could not convey seriousness without getting teary-eyed.

I watched 6 episodes too. Then The Outcast came out, as a fan of the original web comic and anima adaption. I switch to it and save TJTY for later watch and....... I am glad i did it lol. Many friends of mine got really frustrated with the story and rant till today.

Haha I love the Outcast/I Am Nobody too! Though I did come back for this drama later because I just had to finish what I started 😂

Omg I can relate to the slowness in which the characters spoke. I watched it on iQIYI and I was able to speed up the scenes but also still be able to read the subtitles. I just realized that’s how slow they were talking lol.

I thought this was pretty good, chinese dramas had gotten pretty formulaic lately and this kind of reminded me of Ancient Detective where it came across as its own thing.
Finally watched the last 2 episodes, dont really get the complaints about the ending as it obviously sets things up for a new season. Add in the cameo from Joseph Zeng as one of the characters time skipped. Really hope they get the chance to finish telling the story,

Everything you said and the characterization of the male lead were my frustrations with this drama.

The thing about this drama is.. the main lead liked female lead just like that? Really? She didn't do anything special at all. Why would he just fall in love with her our of nowhere? This doesn't make sense at all. Another thing that I don't like about this drama is the fact that main lead just got everything as he was lucky. I don't see him working hard at all. He just got everything like a silver platter and truly he didn't deserve any of it. Why is he the head when he can't protect his own sect? I really feel bad for the 2nd lead as he actually deserved the head position. And what is with everyone just liking male lead? Even in the trial realms, he was just liked so all of them teamed and helped him? It seems so fake. Why can't I see anything struggle for male lead? He gets everything, when I mean everything easily. This doesn't make any sense. Yeah he is the male lead but I have never seen a stupid, weird and stupid male lead like him. His wife is an assassin and he forgives her? Like immediately? He even puts his whole sect in danger for his so called love? Stupid. Idiot. And he is shown as someone who "loves" everyone and is weak hearted. Bro he risked everything for his selfish reasons and the only thing he did was to become stubborn. Seriously, I liked all the characters except the male lead.

Lmao that's what happens when you have no women around, and only drive a herd of women like cattle during marriage time inside your oh-so-secret sect. Whatever comes your way in the form of a woman, who looks and smiles at you, you pretty much say f crown f country I want loooove.

    1) i agree with the dragged out long conversation scenes, too many straightforward talking scenes. i dont like it that much, bcs it doesnt left the audience(me) having creative thinking and finding out their underlying meaning, everything is just thrown out as dialogues. example like, their plans or motives, everything are straightforwardly thrown to the audiences' faces. as a mystery/conspiracy drama, i too want to be involved in their conspiracy.... whats the point if i knew all of them earlier....
    2) again, i agree with the 'super slow speed'. these characters talk soooo slow..... its so breathy~ lots of air. it make them looks so pretentious.
im currently at episode 5, and i really could not stand these 2 things..... idk ,should i continue? the plot is predictable atp and nothing's really groundbreaking. it's a pity since i loved yu shuxin and zhang linghe as xiao lanhua and changheng. even the character setup in this drama are not that great imo, for a mystery/conspiracy plot, their setup are quite shallow. i couldnt connect(empathize) yet with any of the characters' motive.

My Journey to You should have another season. Otherwise, I'd call bs on the production. I'm used to cliffhangers that's why I am not disappointed with the show. I'd certainly be if they announce that that was the real ending.

I thought the opening few episodes were amazing. Everything was still in a very mysterious stage and I quite liked the dark colour palette designs.
But as the story unfolded I did think there were a lot of plot holes and it just wasn't that good.
As for the acting, I actually thought Esther Yu did a great job. I haven't seen her take on such a role before and her fight scenes were pretty cool. As for the rest of the cast, well, it's fair to say the director chose some very pretty people and shot some very aesthetic scenes. I've seen them do press for the drama and the two brothers' dynamic is so funny to watch too.
Back to the actual drama, unless they actually have a season 2 as rumored the ending really wasn't it for me. There are much better ways to set it up than on such a cliffhanger like that. Other dramas certainly wouldn't have left such an open-ended finishing episode. For me this was such an unexpected and unsatisfactory ending.
