Porsche 911 (87): Restoring The Rear Wheel House

  • This film is about the restoration of the rear wheel house of my Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 from 1987.
    It all started with a careful cleaning, but I soon noticed that under its so-called rust protection some corrosion issues were waiting to be dismantled. I've repaired all the rust damages by welding up the holes, restored the corrosion protection and did a spot repair of the paint.
    I'm using body sealant, stone guard, filler, water based paint and two-component clear to realize a blend paint job and bring the whole thing back to its original state - as much as possible.
    As announced in the film, here's the e-mail address to ask for a special offer for the Flex PXE 80 Battery Powered Polisher: info@matoopa.com
    Please mention "Greasy Fingers".

    What I wanted to say is: I had to remove the door seal.

So many youtubers just either play horrible music and don't say anything or hit the fast forward and expect viewers to learn something. You sire are modeling the way. Thank you. Now any idea on replacing the 911 door rubber on the door frame? Also on removing the felt on the inside of the door frame. I always thought rubberized stone guard eventually lifted and trapped moisture.. I live in socal, and my car is from 1991 and I seen signs of lifting and slight surface rust. I think the best option to stop this, is to take off all the factory stone guard, get the metal completely bare, epoxy primer to seal in the metal completely, then a stone guard to protect the epoxy primer. It’s Impossible for moisture to makes its way under epoxy primer.
    I am thinking of getting a wire wheel on a high speed angle grinder, and taking off my factory under coating/stone guard to start fresh.

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you’re absolutely right, 2Component epoxy primer must always be the first layer on naked steel followed by stone guard. In my experience, rubber based stone guard has made some progress in the past years and I used it in the project that you commented on. These days, I‘m switching to bedliner as stone guard, there’s a film in the Giulia series about this.
      Still, the first layer is epoxy primer.
      If the car that you’re restoring is post 76 Porsche 911, I recommend not to wire wheel the original stone guard off. And that’s for two reasons: the stone guard Porsche used back then is extraordinarily resilient and unless you see it coming off at spots, there’s no reason to distrust it.
      The second reason is that heavy wire wheeling will also remove the zinc layer which I often find totally sound after all these years.
      HTH

      @@GreasyFingers no criticism of your words at all but from others perspective your level of acceptable is a very high standard. I would be delighted just to get close to it. I’ve been thinking about buying a more classic Porsche (I have a modern 911) and seeing the areas you are working on in great detail is very helpful. Salty winter UK roads are not very kind to older cars so knowing what I need to check really is helping me a lot.

      Yeah, finding only perfect acceptable, I sometimes find is a brain disease of mine. I pour so much time into this, it’s madness.
      I really encourage you to go for an old 911. Prices are low and once the Corona mess is over the only way is up. Needless to say the fun is incredible.
      The spots I showed in the past films basically cover 90% of the damages that you normally find on reasonably maintained cars, so if these are okay, there’s not much more to worry about.

    Great work again. My brother purchased a 1989 Targa 3.2 with the 5 speed G50 about 8 years ago; I believe he paid £9000 U.K. Sterling. It was red like yours, and I didn’t like it at the time as I felt it was cumbersome to drive. Additionally, the hinged clutch pedal just reminded me of a beetle.
    I wonder what it’s worth now? I recall a colleague having one about 5 years ago he valued at £30,000.
    I don’t think my brother regrets it; we have owned numerous cars including E30 M3’s, Skylines etc etc. I guess you can’t keep them all! He’s since had a number of 911 turbos including the 991. Currently he has an Alfa collection including a 75 3.0 V6, a 164 24v Cloverleaf, and I’ve just sold him my Fiat Coupe Turbo LE.
    I still keep a 916 GTV in my collection. Fabulous cars Alfa Romeo are, if you are prepared to maintain them correctly.

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is an impressive list of cars.
      I had a 916 spider myself and interest to buy a 916 Coupé comes over me in waves, same with the Fiat Coupé.
      With my dad working for BMW in the eighties, my need for E30‘s is still satisfied. I think the family must have had at least 10 of these when employees discounts weren’t yet to be taxed.
      911 are probably the cars with the widest range of driving behaviours from total mess to adorable, depending on how they are adjusted and maintained. Mine still has issues, so you have to keep watching …

    • @rezaq1
      @rezaq1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GreasyFingers I’ve had three 916 Spiders including two in Zoe yellow, fabulous colour. They’re great cars and the 2.0 TS is all you need (the V6 is bad enough for weight in the Coupe). As for the Fiat Coupe, this was my ninth car and my second LE; I am bored of them after nearly 15 years with them yet it’s my brothers first, so I thought I’d let him experience it. They’re great useable cars, but I guess I’ve had one too many.
      You mention the E30, I used to be known amongst my social group as ‘the E30 man’. I don’t keep cars long, but the E30 M3 I kept over 5 years! Says a lot about them, only my current E38 740i Schnitzer I’ve had for longer (6.5 years).
      For your information, the said brother still maintains a 1990 E30 325i Motorsport convertible (798 chassis code) in Sebring Grey with a manual transmission and the fabulous ‘bubble’ leather. He’s owned it around 10 years and it’s only covered around 1300 miles during that period. It’s probably the best one left, and only on 91,000 miles.
      We are petrol heads as an extended family and still own some Ferrari (360/355), two more Porsche 911 including a GT3RS and many more including a 1994 Audi RS2 wagon which really needs restoration (it’s been off road 20 years and was stored in a barn).

      I basically like the concept of ice blasting, but to me the problem is logistics. You know, in order to really get all the benefit of it, you have to first disassemble the car and then I don’t know how to get it to the blast man - though I’m lucky to have one in the next village.
