Restoring the Final Wheel House (Porsche 911, 87)

- This film is about the restoration of the front left wheel house and fender of my Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 from 1987.
It all started with a careful cleaning, but I soon noticed that under its so-called rust protection some corrosion issues were waiting to be dismantled. I've welded and repaired all the rust damages and built up new corrosion protection.
I'm using body sealant, stone guard, filler, water based paint and two-component clear to realize a blend paint job and bring the whole thing back to its original state - as much as possible.

always a pleasure. the grease on the back of the lamp housing was actually pretty smart. my vw typ 3 was partly saved by repeated layers of oil (leaks) and road dust & grime, followed by more oil.. for 50 years. the result was a thick, stiff, black-brown layer under which the car was perfectly preserved.

Rust protection with oil & grease is a double-edged sword. It’s easy and efficient on the one hand, but once you go down that road there’s no turning back. To me, it destroys much of the joy that a classic car can give if all the beautiful design solutions are covered in dirt.

Great Video as Usual. I am dreading doing the final alignment of my fenders using the adhesive putty tape. Glad to hear that my belly will finally come in handy to move the fender into place. I can't believe that people are actually back dating the G-Body Porsches. They are beautiful as is. In 20 years there is going to be a wave of people fixing all of the back dated G Bodies. Case in point, my '72 was front dated to look like a G - Body and I have been spending the last few years turning it back into a '72. Keep the videos coming.

Attaching the fender, it certainly makes sense to have a second person around. Especially at the left one, where one had to thread the plastic tube for the tank cap lock.

Oh I’m a total believer and rest inhibitor’s while working on my 1889 cast-iron building fronts . Now any metal project I’ll use rust inhibitor before primer. Gotta say I enjoy your thoroughness

@@GreasyFingers : Die Lackierung ist nachtblaumetallic, die Innenausstattung meerblau, Vedeck auch blau. Nach der Kombination habe ich mehrere Jahre suchen müssen, dieses Jahr konnte ich noch ein Hardtop in Wagenfarbe dazu kaufen. Ich bin mit diesem Wagen super zufrieden. Wenn Corona mal irgendwann vorbei sein wird, werde ich mit diesem Wagen an die Cote d´Azur fahren.

I am an African living in England and owned a1989 carrera sport 3.2 with a 964 rs body kit. I got the with the and hope one day to return it back to impact bumper shape. A clip on my TH-cam.

I watched the video, and really, I’d had never thought it’s a conversion. Are you sure you want to return it back to impact bumpers? When was the conversion done?
I was a young man in the late eighties and we all loved the 911 but hated these bumpers. It was like a relief when the 964 appeared on the scene, so I can well understand the motivation that drove the guy.
I’m fascinated by your excellent work! It’s mind blowing. I’m ground up restoring a 88 bmw 535i . I’m wondering what brand or type of butyl tape you are using? I will need to source the same for my fenders. Thanks in advance !

I‘m afraid I don’t know the brand of the tape. I ordered it at my 911 parts dealer among some other stuff.
I don’t think there are huge differences in quality. If you take it from e.g. Petec or Würth you can’t go wrong.

You first remove the bumper, then you get access to the screws that connect the lip to the fender. There are a couple of more screws inside the trunk that you have to release and that’s it.

That’s a Stahlwerk. The settings obviously depend on the task.
I use a 85% Argon 15% Co2.

The welding on this car seems to be a lot easier then on the alfa. Is this because the difference in steel quality or are you just getting more experianed ?

I love restoration videos. But don't work so hard pressure washing that old car. New technology is already available to clean like new and faster. Dry ice detail. Not sure of the cost. But worth every penny when you don't have to work to make your old car look new.
