Porsche 911 (87): Restoring The Rear Suspension

  • This film is about the restoration of the rear suspension of my Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 from 1987.
    The rear axle was disassembled down to the single screw. All parts have been restored or renewed. Wheel bearings and bushings have been replaced, the aluminium trailing arms wire wheeled and painted and the so-called swords zinc plated in the original yellow chromate look.
    The production of this film was supported by JP Group Classics from Denmark who gave me some of the spare parts for free.
    It was also supported by matoopa.com, my trusted shop for classic car - related tools.
    If you're interested in the Gedore Red torque wrench (R68900100 / 3301216), please send a mail to info@matoopa.com and mention Greasy Fingers Channel.

    Thank you Sir for your work. I am looking forward for a new episode, it has become a treat. Inspiration. Therapy!
    For people outside of Germany this is how we picture Germans, always doing the job well. German beer tastes better after you restore German steel to its former glory!
    One thing which has worked for me with regards of stubborn bolts is soaking with penetrant few days before, also using a punch or ball peen hammer to tap where I have access (bolt head or nut). Then few 6 point combination wrenches in the more common sizes would work well to prevent rounding up. Good luck with your projects and thanks again for showing the good example!

      A side note about these national mentality things: they sometimes work on a broad statistical base, but most of the times they’re not applicable to individuals. Some of the most careful and meticulous craftsmen I know are Italians and some of the most hard working guys are French.
      When it comes to my work, you see: I’ve picked my job because I’ve always loved cars. But if you develop cars, things quickly become very theoretical. These days I’m living out my initial motivation of becoming a car guy.

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I’ve had the same thought many times.
      It becomes quite evident at this point that it actually is a design of the late fifties.
      Only thing we must not forget: suspensions are one thing but the centre of gravity is another.
      Today’s stupidly huge SUV’s have the latest suspensions and yet they handle light years worse than these old 911’s.

    I have worked on Mercedes and Peugeots purchasing US Snap-On tools for best performance. The latest Dual 80 ratchets are top of the line with action, strength and low drag of the mechanical members of the ratchet. I have been a Snap-On customer for over 50 years enjoying the benefits. Other brand tools are rated high due to warranty; Snap-On has very little warranty as I take care of my tools and do not ask more than spec for the performance I demand from my tools. Why do you have that ratchet when Snap-On is available to you in Germany? It is a surprise to me that you are using that brand of tools in your work. I really like your explanations and style of videos.
    I have never driven a Porsche but I see the spec of what they manufacture as being high on the chart.

    Having done this job on the exact same car (‘87 Carrera) a couple years ago I was interested to see how you did it. I had to do all this on jack stands, however. 😢 I had the EXACT same problem as you where I couldn’t get one of the bolts off the front trailing arm. I ended up having to take a sawzall to mine, also. You got the tougher of the two sides off with a wrench, though, which I still don’t get how you did it. That stupid bolt was like $25! Your spring plates/bushings/torsion bars came out of the torque tube way easier than mine did, too. I watched this video with both satisfaction and cold sweat. It was not an enjoyable job to do but the results are awesome.

    I have been a Porsche mechanic for 47 years and I have to say I really enjoy watching your educational videos. There are a couple of things I do differently but ends up with the same conclusion.. My only negative questions is related to anti-seize products. Firstly I never use an adjustable wrench, I always use my correct size spanners which are all made in "West Germany" I always use counter force with another spanner on the other part of the oil lines both on the engine, oil lines and cooler to make sure the twisting force is countered. My second question is you do not use any anti-seize products at all, I have always used copper grease on anything that is underneath of the car because of the salts and dirt which are readily used on our roads in Canada, as one day the part might have to come off again. I use to work for Roitmayer in Munich and have worked for a few different Porsche shops around the World. But even I can learn from you. Thanks and keep making videos as they are excellent. Look up my site at Jay Lloyds Klassix and you can see what I do.. Thanks again..

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback, Jay. It counts as ten if a guy with your background says that.
      In fact I’m using copper grease a lot myself when I do projects for friends and customers. The reason why you don’t see me using it in this series of films are two: first, this is my personal car and under no circumstances I have in mind to use it on salty roads. Secondly, the film making. While I work, I always have the camera running pointing on my hands. In most of the cases this footage is enough to produce a film. However, sometimes things are out of focus or the memory card is full, I forget to turn it on, I mess things up in an embarrassing way, … these kinds of things. Then I need to disassemble the work again and redo it with the equipment properly set up. That’s when copper grease already on would spoil the script, you see. 😊
      The adjustable wrench: these films were taken at a time when shops were closed down and each and every parcel took weeks, if not had been lost completely. I was just upgrading my equipment back then from amateur to pro and here you go.

    • @miketedesco3567
      @miketedesco3567 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GreasyFingers thanks for the quick response. One could argue with or with out. I guess the whole purpose for the bushing is just to carry the load. It’s the torsion bars job for the compression and the shock for rebound.

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mike. Don’t get me started on that, I could talk about suspensions 24/7 😆
      The spring basically delivers a force proportional to the wheel lift, the damper to the wheel lift speed, in both directions - compression and rebound. It therefore takes energy out of the system.
      The bushings, as you say, take the lateral and longitudinal loads on the wheel.
      They also make sure that especially under lateral forces some intentional
      self-steering effects help keeping the vehicle stable. I therefore sometimes wonder about people’s optimism in changing these bushings towards higher stiffness as it can well lead to decreased stability at the limits of friction.
