Porsche 911 (87): Blend Paint Job

  • This film is about the restoration of the fender of my Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 from 1987.
    It all started with a careful cleaning, but I soon noticed that under its so-called rust protection some corrosion issues were waiting to be dismantled. I've repaired all the rust damages in my last videos, this time I do all the corrosion protection and painting.
    I'm using body sealant, stone guard, filler, water based paint and two-component clear to realize a blend paint job and bring the whole thing back to its original state - as much as possible.
    As announced in the film, here's the e-mail address to ask for a special offer for the Flex PXE 80 Battery Powered Polisher: info@matoopa.com
    Please mention "Greasy Fingers".

    The care and attention is immensely therapeutic. After watching one of your other videos, I finally pushed aside the disappointment of my dash binnacle warping from heat during powder coating, and stripped it back down. I found I enjoyed the process more by just taking my time with it, unscrewing the switches carefully and gently placing them out of the way to eventually be re-installed on another binnacle. Nobody ever does anything properly any more, and seeing someone truly take the time to do the best job they can is highly infectious.
    Thanks for excellent videos, really looking forward to seeing them crop up in my subscriptions in the future.

    Rebuilt my engine last summer (split case) kept it pretty much to factory 3.2 specs upgraded to newer alloy cylinders, the hardest thing I've had to do in the past two decades is just leave it alone drive it and not tweak it ruining reliability. I grew up canyon racing high performance motorcycles in LA and later the mountain roads of the Hudson Valley NY. So it is very hard to for me to just leave anything alone.
    P.S. It occasionally snows here, for shits and grins on a snowy day I drove over to the Maserati dealership (no Ferrari here) armed with all the mailings they sent me I told them I was here for my complimentary test ride!

    Fantastic results...I tried to blend paint in the past but never managed a 100% match, well done! Does the water based paint need high temperatures to cure?

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Geoffrey.
      Two things about blending: you gotta be lucky that the paint guy matches the colour properly. I normally bring along the filler cap so that he can do the fine tuning. Things are much easier when you paint towards an edge like I did because the differences caused by light and shadow help to hide differences of the colour.
      Drying time of water colours isn’t a problem, it takes as long as an according amount of water would take to evaporate, i.e. over night.

    Hi. Great job. Can you please give use some details about the Low pressure spray gun. What are you using ? ( 0.8 nozzle or > ) It is very useful to know for small painting jobs. Greetings from Germany

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Tom. Yes, I use the 0.8 nozzle.
      Everything else is just a standard Anest Iwata LPH 80. I recommend to have a pressure valve directly at the gun though it’s not a bargain. If you turn the fan on (a bypass valve that redirects some of the air flow to flatten the spray), pressure drops a good bit and you don’t want to run to the compressor every time you need the fan.

      Great work and have learned a lot from your site. I’m planning in getting the iwata hlp80 but trying to decide between .8mm or 1.0mm...any recommendations or thoughts.
      What kind of coatings (primers, base, and clear top coats do you use? Are you using 2k products or iso based paints? If you are using iso based hardeners, what’s your Personal Protection Equipments regimen. I noticed you also use single stage spray can coatings as well.
      Lastly on rust conversion. What’s your philosophy on treating surface rust within inaccessible cavities before rust protection. What brand of neutralizer do you use.
      I thank you in advance and keep the motivative progress of your projects coming!!

      There’s also soon going to be a video about the protection of cavities, but the main information is available already in the video mentioned above.

    Beautiful work. Can you send a link for the base paint and clear you used? I have a similar project on the horizon for my 1985 3.2 carrera (also guards red). Last time I did any paint on the car was 2013, and I used 2k solvent-based base and clear, both with isocyanate hardeners, which I am not crazy about for potential health/inhalation reasons. Seems like the water-based has come a long way since then, and I would like to use it for my upcoming project. Is your base 1k? And the 2k clear - does that use an isocyanate hardener?
    Chris

    • @GreasyFingers
      @GreasyFingers  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Chris.
      That is in fact a topic that I wrap my mind around quite a bit.
      As you can see in the films, I’ve used water based paint and all things said and done, it worked okay. The point is: a solid clear coat on top of it is mandatory, so judged by the amount of potentially hazardous solvents, the advantage is exactly zero, but you’re one work step down.
      I will in future use acrylic two component paint again, invest in good ventilation in my workshop and be more consequent in wearing a mask.
