There is a similar branding issue with the watches called "Louis Cottier". Louis Cottier was a famed swiss horologer, but the watch brand of the same name is a recent creation with zero connexion with him.
I don't know much about the various groups that comprise several brands nor how one influences another but I recently bought a James McCabe that I like very much (Baja Scabler in dusty blue for just under $100 USD shipped). The watch's dial is marked "Belfast London" at the bottom where Swiss Made is placed on many Swiss-made watches I've never seen anything that made me think they were anything other than a UK-based company selling Chinse contracted watches. I bought it because I liked the style, and the price and had bought from the seller before so I had confidence it was being well represented in the eBay listing.
Lol. Dark Jody don't pull punches. Yes I'm guilty of enjoying these type of videos but then again I haven't missed a JOMW video in years as evident by the fact that at 3:30am, in Trinidad and I am up watching a JOMW video. I must be mental
Have said it before and will say it again - there is obviously some money to be made here. Business plan; 1 - Get some cheap generic Chinese manufacturer/parts to assemble a watch for you 2 - Come up with some nonsense marketing hype 3 - Build a website 4 - Send watches to influencers 5 - Profit! What's amazing is there are so many buyers that keep these watches coming and coming. That or the profit per watch is so much that it keeps the business going with minimal buyers.
Ha, 'go away now', nice touch Dark Jodie! I was genuinely expecting this to be about Seiko! Never heard of these Earnshaw pieces of cack, they look like those horrible Armani Exchange things you see youths sporting on the tube.
I made the mistake of buying one from the website, Before I knew any better, The price was ok, until a few days later I started receiving messages about import tax, eventually confirming they were real I had to pay another £48,00 , this is the only time this has ever happened, and yes, it came from China.
My first automatic watch was a Thomas Earnshaw…it’s stopped working after a week and I returned it and got me a Seiko Sports 5. I own 4 Seiko divers now 😊
I thought I'd never see someone who inflated pricing as bad as Invicta. Got a Master of the Oceans GMT (claims Swiss made, Swiss movement- the movement at least is a Ronda) for $89 on the site named for a big river in South America. In the box was the hang tag, with a price sticker for... $795. A mere 800+% inflation over the actual retail paid.
I was expecting this video to be about Stührling... another equally trash brand with shady marketing and laughable discounts from unrealistic prices. I was slightly drunk one night and bought one of these watches online. Lesson learnt!
Oh this brand still exists. The first watch I was suckered in to before I knew anything about watches way back in 2018. The mechanism was running several minutes a day slow. Drove me insane.
i never pay attention to this watch brand, but almost for once, i was looking up for a skeleton automatic watch, then this brand bumped up on every pages i had visited. Then i looked for their website, legit website design, eye-catching watch, i was falling for them .... until i saw one, just one comment from a buyer stating that their automatic watch was a disaster to him, how he just recently bought it, but the timing tolerance is unbearable, how it died twice a day, ... . And that was when i knew there was a big red flag, and i stopped right there.
Actually, because I liked the looks of one of their skeleton watches, Earnshaw actually got me into collecting mechanical watches, because I got it for £99. still running. But obviously their marketing is a bit questionable.
I just got into watches recently. Wow is the watch community odd. As someone who is just starting out I look for value for money considering there is no way I am going to go out and buy a high tier brand like rolex or omega for example. To me it's like hey should I get a Harley Davidson and pay 10000 extra for the name, or should I get a Honda for 20000 less. Maybe it's just me.
in a moment of weakness I bought one of these a couple of years ago(for £79uk),it's a sort of royal oak homage and a bit chunky to say the least,TBF there's a lot of stainless steel for your money and the butterfly clasp is better quality than some Japanese brands, for what I paid it's not that bad,I get what you mean about the marketing though.
Were you as Jody put it 'dangerously drunk'? Don't worry we've all bought our share of 'what the F did I buy THIS for?' Watches ... mine were 1) an Aldi watch (ironically that was German made actually looked good and got a few compliments), 2) two Lige watches and 3) an Ochstin chrono.
JustOneMoreEvisceration - well done! Nowhere near enough warning shots like this. Too many “if you don’t have anything nice to say” types, keeping quiet about some of the crap brands and sub-standard products.
Come on, Man- these are $250 watches, nobody in their right mind is expecting quality from a "fashion" microbrand. Invicta also has basically zero do to with the actual Swiss watchmaker that went of of business in the, what was it, 1960's? Sadly, that's just what it is now, call it "stolen prestige" if you will (maybe I should claim that term). And most of them are clearly rubbish from the photos, although I have to say I kind of like that Carlisle and they inarguably have put more effort into actually designing a watch than the likes of Pagani "Design", which AFAIK has never designed, only copied. I mean, it is what it is, but I think I'd rather have one of these than Alibaba rebrand AKA Daniel Wellington or the like. They are at least offering something that doesn't look exactly like everything else, have some design continuity across the line (like it or leave it) and they are not trying to sell the things for $2500, so I say give them a pass- if they are total trash, it's a case of you get what you pay for. Consider Fossil as a comparison.Yeah you can get a better quality watch for the price, Orient, etc.- but then you are back to one of the same 150 or so watch models that all of us see all the time and are frankly a bit bored with. There are a lot of guys jumping intro the "cheap" watch space, have you given any thought to doing some more upscale reviews of smaller brands (Formex, Zero West, Norqain, etc.) or is it a case of what you are doing is working, so don't mess with success? Just curious. I do enjoy your reviews although I have generally given up buying really inexpensive watches.
They remind me of a certain brand that sounds Italian but is no where nearly as Italian. But in their case, you will actually get the watch. Can't say the same for that brand.
"Anyway that's all I've got for today, go away now" I had a good chuckle at that line I must admit. If I was a TH-camr I like to think that's is how I would end my videos. Videos over, get tae fuck.
Funnily enough, those gaudy skeletonized watches are the reason why I'm following a watch channel on TH-cam years later. Not this brand specifically, but I wanted to buy a watch and thought "hey, this looks cool, you can see the inner workings of it, isn't that neat?"... Luckily, I wasn't dangerously drunk (just mildly) and started to look into the subject to figure out what I really wanted - and it wasn't that. At all. Dodged the proverbial bullet. Dark Jody is educational, methinks.
I was sent one of these after subscribing to a certain Club that sells watches THEY choose. I left the club and the watch sits in a drawer because I would be ashamed to give it to a friend.
I actually had to listen to the ending twice to make sure I heard the critical drinker reference correctly, but I feel it's appropriate for this video. Thanks Jody!

I really look forward to seeing you build a watch with the movement. Is there a cheaper source for the 2824 movement? Also is there a Chinese movement that would work as an alternative? I think I'm getting the itch to try a watch build sometime in the future.
Yes, Sea-Gull and other Chinese manufacturers make 2824 clones. The PT5000 is quite highly regarded and available as an option alongside the SW200 for some watches from San Martin.
I like the way some of them look. I haven't brought myself to purchase one yet. I've seen a few on Ebay that I like. I keep finding myself going in other directions.
Dark Jody is cool. I have bought any of clomage Chinese watches and felt disappointed. But by far worse are the Timex watches made in the Philippines. They don't last at all. I challenge you to JODIFY that brand!

I think the good Doctor was completely fair and judged appropriately based on a good amount of research. Well done.
There is a similar branding issue with the watches called "Louis Cottier".
Louis Cottier was a famed swiss horologer, but the watch brand of the same name is a recent creation with zero connexion with him.
I bought one for $65 it's ok, but the dial isn't aligned properly. The 12 o'clock position shows 12:01.
First time I've heard of them. I wouldn't purchase one, but I can't help but feel sorry for those who did.
I got sucked into buying an Earnshaw when I first started buying watches. Thought I was getting a great deal, but lesson learned
Have said it before and will say it again - there is obviously some money to be made here. Business plan;
1 - Get some cheap generic Chinese manufacturer/parts to assemble a watch for you
2 - Come up with some nonsense marketing hype
3 - Build a website
4 - Send watches to influencers
5 - Profit!
I want to be Dark Jody when I grow up!
One of your best videos. Keep ‘em coming!
Great❤️👍

"That, to me, is marketing at its most cynical."
OOOF. That's not a burn that's a murder.

Hi Jodi! Where do you buy your t-shirts? New one every time😂. Online or in local store?
I was expecting this video to be about Stührling... another equally trash brand with shady marketing and laughable discounts from unrealistic prices. I was slightly drunk one night and bought one of these watches online. Lesson learnt!
Oh this brand still exists. The first watch I was suckered in to before I knew anything about watches way back in 2018. The mechanism was running several minutes a day slow. Drove me insane.
Am I on the wrong channel? :) Is Dark Jody savaging a watch or a Marvel movie?
Great video as always.
i never pay attention to this watch brand, but almost for once, i was looking up for a skeleton automatic watch, then this brand bumped up on every pages i had visited.

I bought a nice looking watch from the Bradford Exchange and it was £300 and terrible with a cheap £10 cheap quartz movement 😂

Awesome! Dark Jody gives the people what they want. LOLOL The Earnshaw v Omega vid was hilarious, too. Cheers!
A good British watch brand I own 2 of is Bremont !! Maybe you can review the Supermarine in your next video !
Love Dark Jody!
You are spot on with these Companies over inflating their worth to catch out People who don’t know any better.

You have me on tenterhooks. Can't wait for the next episode of Dark Jody. Talk about a cliffhanger.
They remind me of a certain brand that sounds Italian but is no where nearly as Italian. But in their case, you will actually get the watch. Can't say the same for that brand.

Spaghetti Scameti?
@@TheKnobCalledTone. Nope.
Vincero ?
@@international_dave you came close.
"Anyway that's all I've got for today, go away now"
I had a good chuckle at that line I must admit. If I was a TH-camr I like to think that's is how I would end my videos. Videos over, get tae fuck.
Keep on buying mocking and invicerating (if that’s a word)! We enjoy both 👼 Jody and 😈 Jody!!! 👏🏻🤠
Hah! Well done, Jody (love the "Critical Drinker" ref!)!
I blacklisted all the Dartmouth brands a while ago, even AVI-8 and Spinnaker, which are probably the best two of the bunch.
Jodie my eyes are still in agony from last time you showed the Techno My-Brain. Why'd you have to show it again?!?
I was sent one of these after subscribing to a certain Club that sells watches THEY choose. I left the club and the watch sits in a drawer because I would be ashamed to give it to a friend.
I actually had to listen to the ending twice to make sure I heard the critical drinker reference correctly, but I feel it's appropriate for this video. Thanks Jody!
Indeed! He has a sharp tongue, and a great accent 😉
Have to say, I creased myself laughing when Dark Jody or the Critical Watcher said that. 😂
Hey ! The Critical Drinker showed up today!! Go away now!! Lol ! You Are The BEST Jody! Take Care And Stay Funny. Eric
Very interesting and entertaining video. I’d never heard if Earnshaw to be honest, but watching this, is now obvious a brand to avoid. All the best from the U.K. 🇬🇧
ok, I'm going... I'm going...
but I'll be back baby

I really look forward to seeing you build a watch with the movement. Is there a cheaper source for the 2824 movement? Also is there a Chinese movement that would work as an alternative? I think I'm getting the itch to try a watch build sometime in the future.
Yes, Sea-Gull and other Chinese manufacturers make 2824 clones. The PT5000 is quite highly regarded and available as an option alongside the SW200 for some watches from San Martin.
Okay, I know this brand sucks but I actually really like the watch you bought from them. Too bad the dial is misaligned.

Dark Jody is cool. I have bought any of clomage Chinese watches and felt disappointed. But by far worse are the Timex watches made in the Philippines. They don't last at all. I challenge you to JODIFY that brand!
Dark Jody isn't evil, he's just less happy.

Priceless My friend Jody Dark it is so far love this videos very interesting 😀....
I think the most roasted watches were MVMT, such garbage plastic junk and super overpriced garbage.
To hell with the watch, that Masters of the Universe shirt ROCKS!!
"Go away now" must be the nice version of f*ck off as described in it's usage by the brilliant and wonderful Billy Connolly.
