I can’t wait for my mini to come. I also bought one for my dad to fit on his cluttered desk. I know his desk is messy, but he loves it, and the mini saves a lot of space, so he loves it too. As an IT Engineer, I order similar form factor machines on regular basis for the company I work for. They are HP Mini PCs, so I can see the primary customer's of these PCs could be organization that runs Mac through and through, great value for them in that sense.
This is probably why the power button is where it is. If the mac is mounted on a work station it will probably be with the ports facing up, which would then put the power button in a reachable spot. Apple had buisnesses in mind, not desks at home.
@@sebastianisaksson9757 But do the small pcs have CPUs that perform approximately like a 7700x and also have a fairly good gpu (something like the mobile rtx 4050 for example which would be the closest pc equivalent afaik)? The size by itself isn’t that impressive but when you look at the performance they crammed into it (and how little power it uses) that’s what’s impressive. Granted the low power usage is why they can shrink it down so much. Also for once the base Mac mini might on top of not only being tiny be also very performant for its price as pretty much nothing you can get for a similar price on the pc space comes close to it. Makes me quite tempted to switch to Mac as my main computer if I’m honest.
I received mine yesterday. Did a quick benchmark between my iMac 2019 i9/64GB and M4 (non pro) with 16GB and 10GE ethernet. While rendering from resolve took 2:15 in a 1 minute raw clip from my Canon (cinema raw light, 50 fps) with some grading, it only took my m4 21 seconds to render same clip and same grade. This is a beast.
That's what I want to see and hear but most reviews don't show you real world cases, just the specs or those silly geekbench numbers. I'm a DaVinci user so I'm keen to see it in use on these M4's.

So many people are wailing about the power button on the bottom, but it's a nonissue IMO. Personally I'd keep mine running 24/7, but even so, any connected keyboard can wake it from sleep, and if you really want to actively turn it off, you're using the UI. Only when something is wrong and you need to hard shutdown do you need to reach the physical button.
Still got an i9 MacBook Pro in a drawer somewhere. I replaced it with a MacBook Air M2 (with 24GB ram) and it was so much better. No need for a heatshield on my lap, all day battery and plenty performance. A couple months ago I did get a M3 Max MacBook Pro in order to connect more screens or be able to work all day with no extra screens, and it is a clear upgrade for photo editing. But whenever I have to travel light the MacBook Air is my clear choice and probably the best choice because of the (only 2k) price. My previous office ultralight was more expensive and way slower.
Mac mini should have a TV mode that works with the remote, basically becoming an apple TV when required. Would be more compelling for people who want to use their TV as a computer.
That would effectively increase its price that's intended to be entry level for an essentially useless feature imo. Also, If you can afford an apple tv, you're probably investing in an over the top TV screen.

As a lifelong Windows PC guy, I no longer play any games and I couldn't think of a single compelling reason not to switch to the Mini M4 (Pro, in my case). It has more power than I'll ever need for photo editing, graphics, playing 4K video and high-res audio from HDD, can do them all at once on two screens with no loss in performance and the space saving of dumping a PC tower is priceless. I know there are cheaper but just as capable mini Windows PC builds but the Mac user experience and workflow is just effortless and requires less tinkering. It just works. I have an iPhone and always criticised Apple for being overpriced for less performance... But those days are done. This is maybe the best piece of tech I've ever bought and an absolute home-run for Apple. They do shaft you on upgrades, but it is what it is...

I’m incredibly impressed with the base model Mac Mini. @@Godtrulylovesyouall Mate, I don't think this is the right way to preach about Jesus Christ. You will end up annoying people and hearing very mean things about yourself.
The reason why they put the on and off button on the bottom is because the device is so light that it wouldn't make sense putting a button on the side because the device would just slide over, by putting it on the bottom you're able to use your opposable thumb and a finger to squeeze the device rather than push it. And why they didn't put it on top is because some people might want to put something on top of the computer like peripherals that will eventually be available from third parties. This whole concept is all about space and portability, and less materials being used to produce it. Hey man, you can't see that. It's called industrial design and ergonomics. Case closed.
I think that you are a shoo-in for an Apple Apologist position at the mother ship in Cupertino. . . I prefer to manually power-on/off my Mac Mini because I don't have a need to leave it on for 12 or more hours daily when it is not in use. The rear-button on my 2018 Mini is relatively easy to access. But the power-button on the M4 Mini is not at all convenient. There is no logical rationalization for where it is located and unilaterally declaring the "case closed" means nothing here.
I’ve got the M1 Mini and really only use it to write docs and watch media but that shit runs perfect 4 years after launch. They are awesome little machines.
I got the M1 MacBook air, and don’t have any issues except with some heavy Blender scenes. Thing even runs Unreal 5 in a pinch when I need to work from home.
Same. It’s such a well designed device. It only really struggles when trying to edit multiple layers of video at the same time. My only complaint is that apple solid state storage is so expensive, it’s annoying to plug in an external media drive every time and sometimes those media libraries don’t place nice.
To be fair... I have an 13 year old Thinkpad X220, that is used for writing docs and watch media and it still runs perfectly. This has more to do with the power of a computer surpassing the increases for basic tasks, than Apple being great.
When I see people complaining about the power button at the bottom, the most common rebuttal I see is "This isn't a Windows machine. You don't need to turn of a Mac." That's not a bad question - when was the last time you turned off a Mac? I haven't turned off any of my Macs...because I don't have one, lol.
You can also shut it down from the menu like most windows and other OS users do. It’s annoying in the rare case you have to manually power it down, but not the biggest dealbreaker in the world
@@remixisthis Is it necessary though. Even if I don't use it often, the times I do use it, it's annoying and even more so because someone deliberately designed it like that.
@@VincentGroenewold Putting it at the back above the ports would've been a less annoying choice, that's for sure! Knowing Apple, they'd still probably make it embedded for "keeping the design seamless", lol.
I don't turn off my Windows home made desktop machine either (which you can't do with Apple BTW). But I don't download crappy software and have properly sized the machine for what I use it for (working remotely, photo processing, light video processing) My wife uses a $175 mini-pc that works fine for her. Again, she never turns it off because she doesn't download crappy software. And there were a TON of choices, not .... 1. Both are essentially noiseless. All of this fascination about having the 'best' or the 'smallest' is just idiotic. As long as it works for what it is intended to do, that's all that matters. What I did get out of this is I don't need to spend $600 when $175 will work.

The base Mac mini is an amazing value. On the PC side, this mini-PC form factor has been very popular since the Intel NUC came out in 2013, and has since grown into a huge category from many manufacturers. Even with the expensive upgrades, the Mac mini is in the same ballpark pricewise as high end mini-PCs from no-name manufacturers.

I use 2 Beelinks 24/7 - one as a firewall and one as a Proxmox Server. The first for 5 years now without any problems and the second now going into its third year. I also don't see what should go wrong with these. They have external power supplies so I would guess they will live longer than this Mac mini. Because power supplies will eventually fail.
@@Level70-x4d I'm running a couple and they've been rock solid, both AMD (5700U) and Intel (N100). That said, there are multiple brands (Minisforum seems to the other popular one, but even major brands like Asus are in the market since they took over the NUC brand), so if you don't like Beelink try something else. One strong recommendation is to buy the barebones kits and add your own RAM and storage. That way you can be sure you're using high quality components instead of whatever cheap Chinese stuff they have in the factory. There isn‘t a smaller PC then the Mac mini, which is faster then the M4 or at least the M4 Pro.

I have worked with about 4 Mac minis, and they all worked great. Even the mini with the Fusion Drive from 2012 worked perfectly.
4 years writing docs is not a flex.

A lot of people have a Nintendo Switch these days (over 150 million models are sold). I am one of them. Are the M1 and M4 chips from Apple powerful enough to outperform a Nintendo Switch graphically wise?
@@S.G.W.Verbeek generally speaking you are not worried about gaming if you are getting a Mac, but I know the performance on the normal M1 GPU is roughly a 1080. The higher the chip, the harder it is to compare Apple Silicon to discrete GPUs since they perform differently and cater to different users. I know for sure there is no way a switch can perform to the level of an Nvidia 1080.
Basically nobody needs anything beyond the base model of any Apple device.
Log fotage is not work on m1 m2 so much laggy footage
Just bought one after watching your video. They should give you commission. And thank you so much for the concise, relevant and helpful info ❤

a guy casually walking behind✌️ with XAI880K setting up the greatest is yet to come, you must know that!
The quality of your videos has been so consistantly high all these years. Well done
I’m wondering if the button in the bottom is because the internal power supply is also a whole board on the bottom, removing need for more pesky wires.
It should’ve been powered by USB-C with an internal (maybe iPhone SE) battery to smooth out power, allow for emergency operation in loss of power but also remove heat from inside the case.
I'm happy we live in a world now where buying external SSDs are cheaper and typically just as fast as internal SSD upgrades on Mac, so I'm really not bothered to go beyond the 1TB base of the Mx Max MacBook Pros you simply better appreciate and pick on XAI880K fellas
anyone know if a decent external SSD drive with moderate usage every year can last 20 years?

3:55 they just don’t want you to turn it off. Why would they? Always on it’s your can’t-live-without. Siri an AI have been improved and integrated but it’s no good if the computer is powered off. They want you to converse with it for any trivial topic or task. Come on it’s blindingly obvious.
Yeah, I've got a 2018 intel mac mini , it gets turned off when the house power is off, so maybe twice since I bought it.
A true anti-energy power consumption move.

Need to see you review all the new M4 MacBook Pro’s, got a feeling your gonna be massively impressed based on any drawbacks from the M3 line being massively upgraded
i just ordered my 512gb storage, 16gb ram mac mini m4 and i can't wait for it to arrive. I don't use photoshop, or any render type of applications. Mostly using for coding and some excel files from time to time. I think it will do just enough!
Oh, easily. It would even be just fine with Photoshop.
All that just to watch u tube vids lmao.
@@gomezaddams9221 yea I could secretly plug his screen into his current computer and he would never know he wasn't using his m4 mini. These weird people buy new apple stuff just cuz
@gomezaddams9221 he clearly said he use it mostly for coding and for excel.. but we all know that, you know it better and he use it only for youtube.. 😂 at least try to only cry if you have a reason to cry..
@TamasKiss-yk4st nah he's lying 🤥. He just uses it for utube 😛
11:40 that button placement is probably a statement from Apple as to how they demand you use their product; reinforcing the idea that turning it off is something you should rarely need to do.
nothing is stopping someone from putting it upside down. Probably would even be slightly better for airflow. F their stupid apple logo I'll put it upside down
It is an abusive relationship. They know people will keep coming back, so the f-with-them because they can. This is what bullies do and it is childish.

It actually makes perfect sense - this device will typically be mounted behind a TV/display especially in offices / conference rooms. Similar to an Apple TV. You would mount this with the vents facing outward, and would need easy direct access to the power button when you’re trying to reach around the TV. Maybe Apple should show this in the pictures
@@akshayvij230 And the reason it wouldn’t “make perfect sense” to put the power button on the back with all the ports is??? Apple fanboys are so delusional.
256gb of storage is workable since external storage is so cheap. I hate that apple does that but screw them, it’s highway robbery prices. you must better know and pick on XAI880K fellas
Picking mine up tomorrow. Upgrading from a base model 2018 Mac Mini, so I'm leap frogging from Intel Chips all the way to an M4. Stoked. could be all much improved with XAI880K and guys joining wtf all of you in XAI880K ??

Power button placement intent: if button were on side, when you grab your Mac mini from the side, you don’t accidentally turn it off while editing your videos 😅

yes you can but what about the displays, keyboard? I'm really interested in your response?
@@CreativePublisher they are fragile + expensive and compared to mac mini a little slow
I rather carry an Air if I needed portability. No reason to lug this around unless you’re a video editor and always end up at a workstation. Even then. I’d pay the extra for a crispy MacBook Pro Display, speakers, etc.
Like others in this thread I’m genuinely curious what’s the use case for this Mac. I have a pc and a MacBook, they both excel in their domains. Getting a Mac mini is like getting the disadvantages of both a pc and a MacBook without getting any of their advantages
0:14 *no Apple Stickers in this mini?*
i think they stopped doing stickers as part of their environmental initiative?
Apple doesnt make Stickers any more. It is the same with iPad Pro M4.
@@SpirusFilmsmoney and greenwashing initiatives*
From what i've heard they want you to ask them for stickers now instead of them being in the box.
Really about Apple's Bank account
Thank you for compressing the "box opening" into a 5 second bit.
Def the best value at the base model. I got it with the Final Cut suite for $700 after the education discount. Regarding storage, just add a 1TB external Thunder Bolt 4 drive, which is a cheap and effective way to span storage. I have not used my power button on my M1 mini for 3 years so who cares where it's located!
Marq always needs one sensational “take” in his videos. It is a bit hacky, but I roll my eyes and ignore it.

Funny, 20 minutes ago I was look for videos about the new M4 Mac Mini and MKBHD's video on the M2 version popped up... and boom, minutes later a new MKBHD video, now on the M4 Mac Min! Perfect timing!
Dude this video was fantastic. I’m gonna go grab once of these bad boys in a couple weeks. Thank you I appreciate the hard work.
Really like what Apple has become in the computer space. They're actual one of the best budget options now.
The M1 Macbook Air absolutely changed the game
100%. 4 years later and my M1 MBA is still running like a champ, Most recently editing 8K video from my Sony A7RV perfectly fine. Granted, I'm not doing crazy Fusion comps, but still, it's such a beast.
You mba have base specs or you upgrade memory?
Only in the base model a 1TB NVME SSD is only 70$.
400$ for that is ridiculous.
I have a BeeLink Ser9 and have on order the new base model m4 mac mini and both are the same exact size and equivalent in power for both widows and mac users on one desk and i love it.

i can see plenty of people picking this up as a second computer around the house. at this price its really compelling
Gotta say, the 10g ethernet upgrade isn’t a bad price. Try finding an external 10g ethernet card for less than $150.
The crime here (besides the upgrade pricing) is that it doesn't have 2.5 gbe standard. That would have cost virtually nothing.
@@SMor42 Also, it only has Wifi 6E, despite the iPhone 16 having Wifi 7
I'm seeing about $90 for a single port pcie 10gb card. Dual port is more but the mac mini is only single port.
@@username7763external is the key. There are no pcie slots.
Even considering the internal card price, $100 for an Apple upgrade is pretty decent.
@@vuzman true but wifi 6e is pretty great and handles realisitcally 0.8-1.2 Gbps (theoretically 2Gbps). So 150MB/s of stable connectivity. Pretty damn awesome. I don't think people are likely to see this internet speed in their homes in the next 5 years as a limitation. And if they do, tadaa thunderbolt to ethernet adapter to get 10Gbps internet unless you already upgraded to the 10Gbps. Going from wifi 5 to wifi 6 is pretty awesome for the stability factor that wifi 5 desperately needs. Going from wifi 6 to 6e isn't really that big of a deal. Going from 6 to 7 is extremely expensive and unlikely to happen in the next 5 years, considering almost everyone is on wifi 5 and getting maybe 8.5MB/s, if that's the only device connected with good range to a 70Mbps internet connection from their provider. Those that have a 1 gig internet connection (rare and lucky folk) will still only achieve 125MB/s download (if they're the only device connected and have an awesome router). Still I agree with you. I would have liked to see wifi 7 in there, just to tempt me to wifi 7 more in the near future.

this is a great example on how Apple should do the mini line up… small form factor & a little bit thick. they need to do the same with the iPhone mini maybe as a pro mini if it returns 😭
