[Ep 03] 1986 BMW K100 Cafe Racer Project - Extreme Cleaning

  • For episode 3, I slather myself in brake cleaner and get to work. I'm doing a big clean of the running gear so I know what i'm looking at and can actually work on this thing without my hands turning black...well more black. This will also contribute to painting it later.
And I was planning to take the cylinder head off...but maybe that's not needed...

For the record, yes I am replacing the clutch later on in the build but it's not important right now. Thanks for the input.

Genuinely my favourite build series on TH-cam, closely followed by Jake The Garden Snake's MT07 series. I have absolutely fallen in love with the bike and your cinematic and gorgeous method of telling the story of the build, pretty much WHILST it's happening. You have definitely become my inspiration for me and how I produce content, both on TH-cam and Instagram. Please, please, please don't stop with your videos, they genuinely bring me a smile when I'm having a really bad chronic depression/anxiety episode. Much love (no homo, though) for you and the channel from across the pond, and I'll definitely be picking up a sticker at some point soon

Great job on the cleaning / paint prep. Some late advice tho, ez-off oven cleaner works great for this type of work. Sprayed a few cans on a truck engine and bay that had been sitting for six years, grease, gunk, dirt, etc. Let it sit overnight, next morning it was very much improved. Even took the paint off the air cleaner and valve covers! The lemon scent was a bonus! Can't wait to see the end result of your vision for this bike... good luck!

Love the build so far...that suspension design is wicked. Racer TV had the designers featured in some of their videos. Awesome work.
For cleaning all that grease and gunk off of parts use Dawn dish washing liquid, some nylon brushes and a bucket of water to get the bulk of it. Then, use the expensive chemicals for cleaning metal, etc. to decrease prior to painting. Cheaper that way.

fr you gotta build a big nice bench to work on. It is going to make this entire thing so much easier and more organized. Working on the floor is going to make your build tough. I speak from the experience of having to work in my dad’s cluttered garage. One day I had enough and straight up cleaned out like half of his garage and bagged everything and put it in the basement.

I won't do it right now, but I'll do it at another point during the build because this isn't the last time it'll be apart

New clutch! Seriously it’s money well spent! You might even get a better one! I mean if you are planning to add more juice to this thing, get a fresh clutch!
