    That sideways four banger gives the bike a kinda bulky presence. Where I grew up a lot of people had rottweilers (northern Cali in the 90s). There was always one on the block that was just a monster tho. bigger than all the rest, muscly, head and neck like a grizzly bear. This bike is channelling that dog, pretty hard.

    When syncing carbs, after each adjustment you need to blip the throttle to settle everything. Adjusting the idle after each blip will help get you closer with each adjustment. Obviously bike has to be fully warmed up before doing anything. Micro adjustments are actually huge when it comes to throttle body and carbs. That syncing meter is easily made with some fish tank air tubing, t-connectors and colored water. Buying a pre-made tool is time saving , so I see why you went that direction. Glad to see you're on the home stretch and will finally get to enjoy it.👍👍

    @- theillestrator - Hi again, sorry, just adding you need some sort of fixing for the front of your seatpan - perhaps a metal strap can be looped/clamped around the rearmost upper frame cross tube?
    Also thinking about the exhaust, hopefully the single pipe collector section is afixed to the frame with a sprung mount? ...also if you slightly loosen the header clamps and giggle around the endcan and collector pipe section, you might be able to get a few more degrees of leftwards angle on the can section to help clear the tire. Then retighten the header clamps.

    My man...those "dreaded linkage screws"...Those are the screws you're supposed to adjust when you sync the carbs, (not the pilot screws). They sync the butterflies at idle speed. (You adjust the pilot screws to get a smooth idle at low RPM, then eventually the idle screw for overall idle speed). But it's the linkage you adjust and you have the tool right there, don't be scared.
    Do cylinders 1-2 together, then 3-4 together then use the middle screw to balance 1-2/3-4 til they're even.
    I forgot to say that your build is beautiful. Just in time for what might be a really early summer. 🍻

    • @Theillestrator1050
      @Theillestrator1050  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im afraid you're mistaken. The brass air bypass screws at the front of each throttle body are what's used to synchronize the vacuum/bypass for all 4. The 3 linkage screws in the middle are not to be touched as per the manual, everyone on forums, BMW themselves, and everyone unfortunate enough to have fiddled with them. Those paint marked linkage screws close and open the butterfly valve to the left and right of it respectfully. It's set by BMW at the factory and unless you truly know what you're doing you shouldn't touch them. After messing with them, I didn't have enough know how to fix them even though you theoretically could with the vacuum gauge. I really encourage you to look up what im talking about because to sync the throttle bodies in the sense seen in the video specifically BMW K bikes, you simply adjust the brass screws.

    • @blipco5
      @blipco5 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      - The illestrator - ...Ok but on every Japanese inline four I've done it's the linkage screws. Maybe the BMW is particularly sensitive but those linkage screws are what syncs the carbs. (The pilot screws adjust either air or fuel depending where they are located in the carb body). BMW sync'd the carbs at the factory and painted the screws but I wouldn't give it a second thought to turn them. But then again it ain't my bike. Cheers 🍻
      I'm going to look into it but trust me, you can do it with that tool you have. People are afraid but it's no big deal. I use a mercury sync tool. They're getting hard to find but are the most sensitive. My friend has the one you have, it's alright but he prefers mine.

    • @blipco5
      @blipco5 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      - The illestrator - ...I did read up a bit. I would still have no problem adjusting the linkage screws, they do it at the factory and some owners do it themselves. People freak out all the time about syncing carbs or throttle bodies. It's actually pretty funny the way they are feared.
      Those brass screws seem to be some sort of bypass screw, which I'm not familiar with. Did you check if the carbs remain in sync a little higher in the rev range?

    Sir, kudos to you for your vision and the hard work and dedication that turned your vision into reality. That bike is so butch. I really like how boldly it proclaims its identity as a build. So many details that look just right. I especially like the triple clamp area. I also like how the license plate works like a fender.
    Do you have room under the seat, behind the electrical box, for a small tool compartment? Just enough room to make a box for spare fuses and a multitool, perhaps.

    Synchronizing the carburetors is about the throttle butterflies being at the same place and opening at exactly the same time, adjusting the idle mixture is not going to help if the butterflies are out of sync.
    Go back to the first throttle body and look at the butterflies, the one that gets turned by the cable you consider the master butterfly, that will also be the one that stops on the idle speed screw.
    Hold it up to light and set the point just as the master butterfly closes/blocks all light.
    Now go to the next butterfly and see how turning the screw changes that butterfly but the master stays the same, now set the second one to the same point where the light just gets blocked/butterfly just shut.
    So now those two are synchronized, now do the third and then fourth to that same point.
    That is usually pretty close, but now run the engine with the tool hooked up, the changing of the screws should make sense now, if you adjust the second carburetor screw, cylinder 2,3,and 4 will change, but turn number 4 and only that one will, turn number three and 3 and 4 change.... anyway i hope that is how it works on your BMW, if not there must be many videos here showing how, but why would these screws be there if they were never to be changed? Don't be scared of the job, you have the tool that should get it silky smooth and it is far from ideal to have some cylinders getting more fuel and air then others.
    As for the idle screws, start with the gentle bottoming out of each one and then turn all out 1.5 turns or whatever others have found suggested, once again, they should all be pretty much identical.
    EDIT:- Just watched the video again, it looks like the third butterfly is the master, the one without blue paint is just for that fourth cylinder but the two one the other side with paint may still need setting, so set the closest first to the master first and then the outer one, loosen the three lock nuts and start screwing around, you will figure it out.
    But trust me, using light should get you 99% right.

    You can loosen the spring in the mass air vane a couple clicks on the tooth wheel and it REALLY helps the throttle response. Pop the black plastic cover off the unit, and looser the gear tooth wheel about 4-6 teeth and see where the throttle response is at. Its an old VW trick, as they use the EXACT same unit. Just be sure to mark the stock location with a marker or paint, so you don't lose that spot, as finding it again is nearly impossible.

    Woo, new K100 vid!

  • @matttriestodothings
    @matttriestodothings 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I'm a bit confused on what you're doing on the sync. I'm coming from syncing a V4, I4 and parallel twin, so I'm not familiar with your bike exactly. But I'm just a bit confused on whats happening in the vid.
    Synchronizing the carburetors is ensuring even air/fuel flow thru the throttle bodies as you twist the throttle. It's making sure that the butterflies open and close at the exact same time. If I'm not mistaken, those butterfly screws are actually the screws you need to be adjusting in order to balance the air flow thru the carburetors. You'll do them on pairs. Balance 1 and 2 together. Balance 3 and 4 together. Then balance 2 and 3 together which will balance out the assembly.
    Again, correct me if I'm wrong, but the screws that were suggested to set out 1.5 turns from closed are you Air/Fuel mixture screw(pin) on the idle circuit. You set those based on your altitude and any air system/exhaust or jetting mods you've done. On cv carbs, I'm willing to bet that more turns out = richer, closer in = leaner. Verify this tho as slide carbs I've worked on (only 2-stroke) have been opposite this. I think what you were doing by screwing out those A/F screws is richening some of the carburetors to be much richer and possibly balance the bike at idle with various air/fuel mixtures to account for the butterfly sync screws being out of whack. This is why you're able to get the bike synced at a single rpm (idle), but it behaves erratically because the Air/fuel mixture is way off once you stray from the rpm you balanced it at with the mixture screws.
    Set the mixture screws back to 1.5 turns out. I'd actually recommend going to 1.75 or maybe 2 given the freer flowing exhaust and the fact bikes are often set lean in order to pass emissions. Then try balancing the carburetors with the butterfly screws. One of the carbs in the pair will drop, and the other will rise. If you're worried about disturbing their initial position, just make the spot. A little dab will do you on turning them.
    Again, I have no experience with your specific bike or even any with that type of engine. But every carburetor assembly I've balanced has been done with those butterfly sync screws. It's why we'll "bench sync" by putting a piece of fishing line between the bottom of the butterfly and throttle bottle and adjust the sync screws so they all line up. Then do the real sync like you're doing now.
    Anyway. Hopefully I didn't completely miss something and spout some nonsense. Love the channel, and I've watched your Buell series probably five times. I recommend it to people all the time. Love seeing this project progress. Cheers.

      I came to the comments looking for this. the screws he messed with and had to replace definitely look like the vacuum balancing screws and if it were a carbed bike those screws on the throttle body would be the idle afr screws but since its fuel injected i dont know. i think the illistrator should double check what those screws did

      @@Theillestrator1050 every SINGLE time I think I know something, and I work up the courage to chime in, I realize I need to get back to my corner and keep learning.
      "Air Bypass" makes sense to me along with your comment about not adjusting linkage. It allows you to add or remove air from the A/F by injecting air without actually adjusting the linkage. I get the concept now. Even now knowing it's fuel injected, I'm curious about why air bypass ports are needed when the linkage and butterfly clearance could just be adjusted by the sync screw. My best guess (judging by the fact that your video shows that they're loctited) is that the sync screws have a tendency to back out due to vibration and throw the sync off. Those bypass screws wouldn't suffer that same problem.
      Anyway, carry on then 😅. I'ma do some reading to keep my foot out of my mouth. And I'll keep watching your vids because you've got a great narration style. And the topic is obviously a good one.

    It's all personal opinion, preference, and feel, but looking at that sport-bike stance you had seemed to me mighty uncomfortable. Personally I would think about raising the handlebars somehow. But then again, I am perfectly content riding my '94 K1100LT stock.
    In any case, the bike is absolutely stunning, I love it!

    Hello.
    I've seen a lot of BMW turning cafe racers videos and would like to ask you why you guys wait until the engine is out to start cleaning it when,off the frame,you have taken some parts out that makes it risky to power wash,but when mounted,you can probably do some kind of pressure wash and take most of the dirt out,then when out of the frame you can do the details.I believe,when mounted,they are pretty much waterproof. Correct me if I'm wrong.All the videos show you guys cleaning it by hand taking a long time.I enjoy the video anyway.Keep it up and good luck. 👍👍
    Thank you,
    Rafael

I mean unless they were going to make a cushion for you with custom upholstery then maybe okay, hell of a job brother, I have watched every one of your k100 videos and I would love to get my hands on one after watching your build! are you going to be doing a new-build anytime soon???Keep up the great work brother and stay safe out there in NYC. another loyal follower/subscriber from Anaheim CA! Oh and where did you get your carburetor synchronizing tool from brother? I really need one!

    I understand how you feel about wrenching at home and that storage isn’t free. I live in NYC, harlem to be exact and apartment life doesn’t agree with what I want to do with a bike and a low budget. I’m married with a little guy and have been wanting to get my hands on a Harley sporty just to build and amp up to a 1250 cafe style for my 6’3” frame to enjoy. City living, high Harley parts prices and time have all been kicking my ass. Have I bitten off more than I can chew or should I just aim at another bike which will fit my needs?

    Loveing the look of the bike, though you might want to look for a tidier mounting spot for the coolant reservoir, it sticks out a little bit too much imo. Course that might be the only spot for it in which case I definitely get it.

    • @Theillestrator1050
      @Theillestrator1050  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, the location of the reservoir is pretty much the simplest place I can mount it. It's a matter of function over form of having to rig up brackets and this and that for it. People often put them over the engine but my Airflow sensor is in the way.

    Did you heat up the sheet after you bent it? When you bend it, it work-hardens which makes it more brittle. So you have to heat it up to release any internal stress that was acquired when you bent it. As for carburetor, does it sound like its getting choked when you blip it? Mine does it because it is running lean.
    I also see stains on the tire because the exhaust is pretty close to it. You might need to reroute it. Oil is not good for rubber as it will start rot out and plus its a safety hazard.

    • @Theillestrator1050
      @Theillestrator1050  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kept on heating the sheet little by little as I was bending so maybe on the last round of bending it was sufficiently heated...but I don't really know. seems completely solid so I can't say i'm worried. It's fuel injected, and no it doesn't really sound choked right now.

    A little late now, but a flat bastard file goes a long way in shaping softer metals like aluminum. Are you gonna do a build cost at the end? For people planning a build, it would be helpful to know how much to budget

    2 years too late… but you can jump start lithium batteries by charging them for a few seconds with a regular Nimh charger, it will elevate the voltage enough for the lithium charger to charge it… lithium chargers won’t charge if the battery is under a certain voltage… this can be done safely if cautious.

    Hey Illest, great to see the finalization, Cheers to your dedication (and RIP to your wallet haha)
    I was thinking, regarding the delay on the throttle, I had a thought that it could be because of the timing on the ignition that is off. I know that it can mess things up easily, if you haven't you might want to take a look! Less finicky than messing with dem carbs (Speaking from experience: First thing I d i s m a n t e l e d when I got my first motorcycle. Didn't go well)
    Take care!

    Did you check the spark plugs and take reading on the exhaust pipes temp after sync trial?
    I don’t think its just a sync issue.. you have a way more open exhaust and filter setup. Idle raising up after bike warming up is a Common situation on lean a/f mixture setups. Since this is EFI , you can try to incorporate igniter ecu unit or power commander kind of products to bring the “snappy” characteristics of the engine.
    Even tho its not an fz1, it will scream bitchin if you dial the tuning just right. I suggest you take it to a shop and watch the mechanic do it while you are there
