I am a friend of the co-founder of Shooting Star. we worked together at the same place for over 5 years, in those 5 years He did not once talk about the band, nor did I know that he was into music. it was a few months before I retired that one of our co-workers told me that he was in the band. my friend tells me his stories now and then about his time with the band, I will share one of his stories with you. "They did not make that much money and it was not an easy job to be on the road." while he enjoyed the experience and the friendships with the other members, it was not the best-paying job. I will tell you another thing, this was also one of his favorite songs. He also likes his privacy so I will not name him. He is also retired now and says thank you for remembering this song.
Thanks so much Jerry for taking the time to share that and to pass along your friend's stories and that this was one of his favorite Shooting Star songs. It's my favorite from them. If you can, please tell him thank you so much for all the joy his band brought (and continues to bring) to all of their fans. Take care and thanks again.
I saw them open for Triumph and Johnny Winter back in '79, they were very good live! I don't know what song they opened with, but I can still remember the first line or two of music to this day. Shame they didn't go farther in the industry.
Based on your description, I have a feeling your friend was the original lead singer, and he was indeed phenomenal. The band was never the same without him.
Hi Jerry. I grew up in Grandview MO and I believe I knew your friend as well. LOL. My uncle used to sneak me into places like The Levee and the Boiler Room to see his buddy Gary back when he was in The Chessmann. Later, I saw Shooting Star many times around town and in Lawrence before I joined the Army back in 1981. It is criminal the way they were treated by the music industry and Virgin Records. I also know a couple of guys in 'Kansas' . They had a love hate relationship with Shooting Star! Rich Williams told me once during a Summer Jam down at the Liberty Memorial, "We love these guys, but it sucks when they open for you because they were such a hard group to follow". RIP Van. Thanks for not telling my mom were I really was!
i'm from kc (kansas city, the band is from kansas), this band, album is VERY dear to me. I saw them at Starlight Thester in...'84? w/ Ted Nugent. They BLEW Uncle Ted's show AWAY! They are amazing. Check out all their albums.
Shooting Star. The pride of Kansas City, though even here they are not household names. They should be, because this song is epic. That climax is absolutely next level and I would stack it up against any song from the era. This should be held in the same regard as a song like Freebird.
I've just never understood it. How this band never made it to the national scene is confounding to me. They're one of my favorite bands of all time. RIP Van.
First time I saw these guys was at Grand Slam Super Jam, June 29, 1980 Busch Stadium, other bands were April Wine, Judas Priest, Journey (with Gregg Rolie) and Sammy Hagar. Great day, great time to be a teenager.
Nice to see a reaction to Shooting Star. These guys were every bit as good as any band in the 70's and 80's. A great tune to introduce yourself to them.
Love Harri! His reaction & comments to this great lost treasure are heartwarming- guaranteed to make you happy! Gary West was a genius - one of the most underrated rock musicians. (The thumbnail photo of band is incorrect- that is not the Original band- but a band formed to tour/support the release of “The Best of Shooting Star” around 1989/90. Search “Shooting Star Original Band” on TH-cam to find channel which has original band photos)
I saw them in 1981 in Denver at a fairly small venue. I can honestly say that I never saw a band put forward a better set at ANY show than these guys put out. They rocked then and they rock now.
The first time I heard this song I was heading home from a bar I worked at, 2am in the morning on KGGO in Des Moines, Iowa. Definitely a power hit from the get! Professional musicians nailing it! Superb arraignment, not to mention the message it carries, this song holds up well and has stood the test of time. My personal feelings on this song and it's musicians is they were way under rated!
Remember this song was out in 1979. Most songs were weak lyrics, sad mucis , and little if any changes and dynamics. One of the best songs ever recorded. A Masterpiece in my book...I am a musician, drummer since the age of 3 years old. Almost went out with the TRinidads in 1967. I toured the country and played on stages with huge acts and even toured with Derek St. Holmes (first lead singer for Ted Nugent) and this tops my list...never gets old to hear!
I hated that they were not played in the mainstream. I am from Detroit and I called WRIF to request this song and was told they did not recognize “Shooting Star”. I was like what the fuck!!! I said they are one of the best rock bands there is, and hung up.
From Detroit. Graduated in 83. I always felt they were equal to Journey in late 70s to mid 80s. I'm there too, soon many great songs, pure talent and underrated.
I remember the day I first heard this tune playing on KSHE in 1978 on the dock at AO Smith in Granite City on the midnight shift. We were at work and all of us were in awe of what we just heard. Needless to say, when they opened for Kansas a year later, they blew me away.
I bought this cassette when it was new and still play there music in Rhode Island United States of America . I was playing this this song on TH-cam in the auto body shop i work in last week . Some young guys loved it and asked me who it was in 2024 👍
Great song and a great band. They were criminally under rated. Like you said great musicianship. They have several other great songs you should hear. My favorite besides this one is Hang On For Your Life, the title song from their second album. Other good ones are Hollywood, Breakout, Flesh And Blood, You Got What I Need, and Tonight.
Michael Pennington- Thank you. It would be great to catch Harri’s reaction to some of those songs. Ironic that Harri is London based. Sadly, being the first American band signed by Richard Branson to the Virgin America label in 1979, turned out to be the fatal flaw/career killing mistake. Had they signed to Atlantic in 1979 they in all likelihood would’ve had a huge career. Very nice getting love from Harri in London.
Thank you Harri Best for such a heartwarming, beautiful reaction! You brought much happiness & joy with your comments & reactions. Pax&Blessings to you.
Love shooting star have all their cataloged great criminally underrated band like you said it's a shame these guys rock. Many many hit songs that were never played on the radio in my opinion. Last Chance is an epic jam!!
A criminally ignored song, off their excellent debut album. You were right, as there was an "eruption" on this song, an eruption of fantastic musicianship, a brilliant way to end their debut album.
I absolutely love that song. It’s old but great. What I loved most is seeing you as a first time listener to it just digging it and totally get into it. 👍
Man Harri I dug how you analyzed that song and it was so big you couldn't even find the words to say it. It's a big big song. Awesome. I got to see it again Harry you really enjoyed that song immensely. There's no words to say how big you really thought that song was and I'm happy for you
Was a big fan back in the days of the 80’s. The band got considerable attention by local Bay Area FM rock radio stations Think I had 4 of SS on vinyl Truly an underrated gem of a band that never got the acclaim they deserved.
Shooting Star is one of my sll time favorite bands. They could have been as big as Journey back in the day but unfortunately they never got the support and proper promotion from their record label(s).
I saw them in a theatre in Kansas City in the early 80s. It was a fantastic, energetic show. After the concert we went to a club, and who should show up but the band. An epic night!
This song truly is a powerful symphony of sound. I've enjoyed their music for 40+ years now and love when people discover these guys. Glad you enjoyed this as well.
What a great obscure suggestion by Tim S. Shooting Star is one of the best unknown bands to release multiple albums !! While I think this was their best song, another good one is their most well known song, “Hang On For Your Life”.
Had the pleasure of seeing them a couple of times around 1980/1981 in a smaller venue. Two singers, great electric violin, etc.. Super tight rockers from Kansas City area. Try Flesh and Blood next.
One of my all time faves, glad you’re jamming to it. Shout out from Detroit, been listening to this all week and the came across your vid!! Made my day too.!
I loved your reaction to the band of my formative years in Johnson County, Kansas. I watched The Shooting Stars when they were a cover band. Van had this thing he did during shows. He'd turn his guitar around and let an audience member pluck the strings while he fretted. I was lucky enough to do it once.
I can hardly believe you are covering this. Shooting Star is from my Hometown, Kansas City...they were fricking awesome! Can ya hear a little bit of the band "Kansas" influence to their sound?
Wow, these guys were GREAT. 97.5 KMOD Tulsa used to play Shooting Star all the time and they were a large part of the soundtrack of my youth. Such a talented band! SS should have been much bigger than they were. RIP Van McLane. 🙏
When I first heard this song as a young boy I fell in love with it instantly. And this was shortly after discovering FM. Quite a while before I discovered my favorite band Pink Floyd. This is the only song I have ever heard from this band shooting star. It has as you say everything. Power on a grand scale, excellent music arrangement, incredible message in the lyrics. And everybody in the band got their own little lead solos so that no one was left out. Good job, man. Good review.
@@JamieBarrettMusic somewhere around that time. I don't remember the year I discovered this song but when I discovered FM I think it was quite a few years earlier

This song, along with "Golden Country" by REO Speedwagon, are my two favorite motivating songs. Thanks for the reaction and I'm looking forward to viewing more of your videos.
I love, love this song, and had already heard it many times as a teenager. I came across your channel as I was looking for the song on TH-cam. The best thing about your take is that you said, early on, that the crescendo was going to be big and the subject matter was timeless. You called it!
Great tune and reaction! I think they had another charted tune called "Hang on for Your Life". Anyway as others mentioned, SO underrated! That music break though! 😳
I love love loved this band back in the day, I'm from Kansas City so of course I did! Saw them a few weeks ago at Ameristar casino. I didn't really want to go because I was thinking, without Van & Gary, ( those are the two incredible voices you're hearing ) what's the point? But I had free tickets and it was amazing! The current line up is up to the task. Had a great time and when they closed the show with this song it felt like thunder. I know Van died from complications of West Nile virus, but Gary just kind of vanished off the face of the earth. I wish him well, wherever he is.
I grew up by these guys they are from olathe Kansas. In 1970s they played bars great band.kansas city metro There like the band Kansas listen dust in the wind guys from Topeka Kansas 1970 Kansas rocked
Glad you played this song I've been a big shooting star fan since this song off of their debut album this song inspires me everytime I hear it one of the greatest pieces of music ever done they have a couple other hits hang on for your life tonight and Hollywood try giving either one of those songs a check out
I.M.O. "Break Out" is, really, the "all purpose banger" in their catalogue. (well-worth your time). ...but this one is a strong contender, as well. Nice choice. 🤘🤘
A MASTERPIECE!! To me better than most rock radio hits from that time period. Has been on my playlist since released. Great band sadly overlooked by many. 🤘
Well done sir. Very few 99% of people have no idea who they are. I grew up in the neighborhood, their music reached me at 15 years old. Helped shape my life. The inspiration , you know. All of their music is positive. Check out Flesh and Blood, Hang on for your Life, and Tonight. Trust me on this. I know where the gold is. Be Well.
My old brain can't recall this song. Sounds like Dennis DeYoung meets Triumph. Definitely a great song with amazing instrumentation. Just a rockin'. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Tim. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
You're welcome Mary. Glad you liked it. It's one of my favorite classic rock songs. If you're interested in listening to more of their stuff, check out their second album "Hang On For Your Life". I think you'll dig it. It's my favorite of theirs.
I'm sorry these guys didn't get their props. My favorite from Shooting Star is Hollywood. My buddies and I passed around their second album Hang On For Your Life amongst each other so many multiple times that we wore it out.
Their record company was infighting. When they were touring in London this song shot to #1 in radio play in the United States. They didn’t even know. That’s the good news. The bad news is their record company had NO records in the stores!
Nice job, there’s another great song by these guys called Hollywood. More of a ballad, but a great song none the less. In my younger years before computers and such, I used to wait by my radio getting ready to tape this song on cassette tape.
1979 - Band trusted & signed to Richard Branson’s newly formed Virgin America as the label’s First American band. Fatal career mistake. Had they signed with Atlantic, their career wouldn’t have been ruined. What a shame. They could have been huge.
Shooting Star was bada$$. IMO, I think they didn't get the recognition they deserve due to the music change in 1980. By 81, Van Halen and guitar tapping was taking over, then New Wave, Synth-Pop Rock and of course the Hair / Glam Metal by 83. If Shooting Star would've been around when Styx, Kansas, Journey, REO were on top, they would've gave them a hard run on the AOR charts.
Great song, great band. Their other best album is Silent Scream which is a little known pop masterpiece. Incredible last effort to fame by the great Gary West. This was a the Record Execs massive failure. They should have been huge.
Absolutely loved this band and this song from their debut album. The message here resonates even more today! Fantastic musicianship.
Massive review worthy of a massive song with a real message. You nailed as did the band. Righteous, brother knew you would dig the second break/solo.

Brilliant track, brilliant band
My old brain can't recall this song. Sounds like Dennis DeYoung meets Triumph. Definitely a great song with amazing instrumentation. Just a rockin'.
Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Tim. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
You're welcome Mary. Glad you liked it. It's one of my favorite classic rock songs. If you're interested in listening to more of their stuff, check out their second album "Hang On For Your Life". I think you'll dig it. It's my favorite of theirs.
They were a regional band played heavy in Rochester NY and not at all in buffalo ot Toronto weird anomolie
I’ve heard this before but I don’t know when or where. It’s good🌺✌️
Thanks Tim...I was going to recommend this song... nobody's ever heard of it I still have this album... Also saw them live they were fantastic!
Haven’t heard this in such a long time. An oldie but goodie !!! Thanks Harri !!❤❤❤
Inspirational song for me since this came out. I’m 62 now
Have you done their song, “Flesh And Blood”, “Breakout” or any others?
My 2nd favorite SS song . Flesh and Blood
Never heard this before. It’s great. Sounds like April Wine /Triumph/BTO MEETS Rainbow and Focus. Haha. Great one !
underrated band and love hollywood song too.
I have always loved this song. Your video just popped up in my TH-cam feed! Have you heard Magic Power by Triumph? ❤
Love Hollywood
Nice job, there’s another great song by these guys called Hollywood. More of a ballad, but a great song none the less.
In my younger years before computers and such, I used to wait by my radio getting ready to tape this song on cassette tape.
They were amazing live....sounded better than the albums
1979 - Band trusted & signed to Richard Branson’s newly formed Virgin America as the label’s First American band. Fatal career mistake. Had they signed with Atlantic, their career wouldn’t have been ruined. What a shame. They could have been huge.
I just very vaguely remember this song - it sounds a lot like what Triumph turned into.
Reminds me of Kansas a bit too.
Millions
Shooting Star was bada$$. IMO, I think they didn't get the recognition they deserve due to the music change in 1980. By 81, Van Halen and guitar tapping was taking over, then New Wave, Synth-Pop Rock and of course the Hair / Glam Metal by 83. If Shooting Star would've been around when Styx, Kansas, Journey, REO were on top, they would've gave them a hard run on the AOR charts.
Max Romeo, Holding Out My Love
This in Hollywood
YES NOW TO SLOW IT DOWN A BIT CHECK OUT ONLY FLESH AND BLOOD BY THE SAME GUYS...
Great song, great band. Their other best album is Silent Scream which is a little known pop masterpiece. Incredible last effort to fame by the great Gary West. This was a the Record Execs massive failure. They should have been huge.
Thanks for doing a reaction for this track. I liked your reaction.
Try Flesh & Blood for another of their songs that has a message that is timeless.
New to me!
Me too, sounds like it belongs in a musical.
@@bkm2797 It is new to me as well. It would work in something like Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge. I like it!
