"It's a Canadian thing" Is probably derived from the fact that the Western music industry has always been dominated by big countries, and Canada has always been a younger 'upstart'. so in order for Canadian bands to have succeeded, they have to be unparalleled. At the very top of their game.
This is why you get bands like Rush, Triumph, and many many others you've yet to experience in videos.
      Tragically Hip,
      Tea Party
      April Wine
      Headstones
      Teenage Head
      Loverboy

The guitar solo on the studio version of this song is, in my opinion, one of the most perfectly crafted and performed solos of all time.
Years ago, two friends of mine who were DJs in the metro Detroit area met, fell in love, and were married. On their way to their honeymoon, the bride fell ill...upon going to the hospital, they learned that she had Hodgkin's Disease. They chose to go on their honeymoon as scheduled.
What followed was a short but happy marriage...the disease resisted all treatments, coming back every time. If memory serves, she passed away something like 7 years later. Her on-air name was Sabrina West (Black, after they married), and the groom was named Steve Black.
I bring up this sad story because they were (and are) friends of mine, and I attended Sabrina's funeral. Instead of the usual depressing music, the funeral home was filled with the sounds of their favorite music, which they had chosen together beforehand. This song was prominently featured among those songs, and the lyrics were printed on the back of the memory cards that were handed out. Steve later said that they had become a sort of rallying cry for Sabrina and himself. I've never looked at the song the same way since.
    Rest in Peace Sabrina Black!
I apologize for the length of this post...I kept it as brief as possible.
    God bless!

Rik Emmett is not only a top notch singer, he's got strong voice he can control at will. It's such a great distinctive voice I believe he should be up there with Dio, Dickinson, Halford, and Tate as far as the top five singers. His guitar playing is a mix of classical blues and rock. He always plays the perfect notes and doesn't waste one. Underrated as anyone could be. He is such a unique talent that you don't see anymore.

My favorite group. Canadians are know to be "NICE" and say "I'm sorry". Rik Emmett (lead guitar and lead vocals on most songs) has the sweetest, best & highest (largest vocal range) male rock singer I have ever heard. And 2nd to no one guitar playing. Although Very humble and would never say how good he is. In concert one time, during "Rock and Roll Machine', Rik went into a ??? 30 minute solo--playing at least (1) of Every great Rock & Roll song, by Every great guitarist ( Jimi H, Jimmy Page, Santana, etc.... songs by Queen, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rush, Jefferson Airplane/Star ship, Pink F, and Many More. Also classical Flamingo, Jazz, Blues, Fusion, and MORE. Truly a gifted and humble... and Canadian ( sober ? ) musician. [ They toured in L.A on the early '80s. Rik did solo and other groups--all different styles. Thank you Jamel.

Triumph was playing around the time of Rush and was referred to as "Rush's better looking cousin." They never did tour together. You can see from the video that Triumph added a second guitarist later in their career when they toured, which Rush didn't do.
The lead guitarist and the singer of this song (and most of their "hits") is Rik Emmett. An excellent player in his own right, he authored a monthly article in Guitar Player magazine.
Jamal, you like drummers who can sing, right? Gil Moore sang lead in many Triumph songs, too. Definitely a hard rock band of the 70s and 80s.

"On July 31st, former Triumph guitarist Rik Emmett guested on 101 WRIF, and during the interview he discussed his relationship with
Rush guitarist and fellow countryman, Alex Lifeson.
Emmett: "Alex and I were always well suited to each other, I think. When Triumph was just a bar band playing The Gasworks on Yonge Street in Toronto, Alex came down to the gig and had a couple of beers and introduced himself to me. We've done guitar workshops together. And, of course, he played on one of my records. I did a record for Mascot / Provogue a few years back - 2016, I think - and Alex played on a couple of tracks. He's a gentleman, he's a tremendous artist. If he had decided he wanted to be a painter, he would have been a great painter. If he'd have been a poet, he would have been a great poet. But, he was a guy that picked up an electric guitar and eventually was in this band. And Rush... we were always riding on their coattails. They were always a bigger thing than us, breaking other markets and playing all over the world. We owed a lot to them.""

That's why the name of the band is Triumph: positivity. (Actually they originally named themselves after the motorcycle brand, but for most people it came to be associated with all the positive lyrics.) They never toured on the same bill as Rush, though individual members have worked together in side projects, and they did tour the same circuits and often with the same opening bands. On a personal note, this band's music saved my life. It was a light in very dark places for me when I was a kid. I think a lot of people can say the same. Jamel - as far as I know, Rush and Triumph never toured together. They did, however, get their early start around the same time and place (club scene around Toronto) and were familiar with each other before either became famous. In particular, Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson and Triumph guitarist Rik Emmett are longtime friends, who have worked together on numerous projects.
Rush and Triumph are often compared because: 1. They are both "power trios" from Canada; 2. Rik's and Geddy's vocals have a somewhat similar quality; 3. Both have blazing, electrifying lead guitar work; 4. Both have a bass player who also plays keyboards. Some significant differences though: 1. Triumph has 2 lead vocalists (drummer GIl Moore sings on some of their harder rocking songs); 2. Triumph did not get into the progressive/thematic/concept material that Rush did; and 3. Starting in the mid/late 80s, Triumph added a 2nd guitarist to their live performances to more closely capture their studio sound, which featured a lot of multi-tracked guitar parts.
I saw Triumph twice during their early days when they performed as a 3-piece act (Rik, Mike, GIl) - they were an exciting band to see live, and used a lot of flashing lights and pyrotechnics in their shows. And Rik's guitar work is truly awe-inspiring. Some of my favorites you should check out: "Hold On", "Rock & Roll Machine", "Blinding Light Show", "Magic Power", "24 Hours a Day".

As a Detroiter, these Canadian rock bands were very popular because we could receive the Windsor and sometimes Toronto radio waves. And, talent prevails so the Detroit rock stations knew of the growing popularity and gave them airplay.

The days grow shorter and the nights are getting long
Feels like we're running out of time
Every day it seems much harder tellin' right from wrong
You got to read between the lines
Don't get discouraged, don't be afraid, we can

IMAGINE...being back in 1980s...the world has always had a lot of music, but not like what happened when we got amps and world tours...enter...Queens Ryche...and enter Triump! Somehow, much of the world missed it. Even You missed it. You my friend are one of the lucky ones...with time You found the knowledge, wisdom, beat, cross-cultural empathy, all of it... And You my friend fell into TH-cam. And thru it all...You finally, after 50 years, have discovered a source of music We have loved. Love for Triumph...its hard to put into words. You see, They Do. Lay it on the Line, Never Surrender,...the band's Moto is music that inspires the strength needed at times to make "thru another day." Let me go deep, I'm in San Antonio Texas. The FIRST TIME Triumph was ever played on the radio in the Country was HERE. WE WERE LIKE..."WTF...WHO WAS...THAT?!!" As I said, IMAGINE. What happened after is Rock History...This City ADOPTED Triumph. When Triumph would tour, the First Spot they would open was Here; sometimes even quietly at first. Some small room somewhere. This city would SHUT DOWN when Triumph came to town. It was an incredible time of love for music, where the divisions we see today just weren't in your face. Seems to me, if division "was always here"...the best way to learn past it is to keep your opinion too yourself. Nothing good to say, don't say anything. Eventually, those racial characters get forgotten. To help bring those insecurities to the surface, as The Trump Party has done is at first energizing (too bad they were not inherently good qualities!), that Hooray! feeling of being involved with others that agree with you...step back...the obvious point I'm making is well, obvious. And now, We have a problem. One much much worse than racism. A Country Divided means a Country broken to the point we can't get anything done. While the Chinese are landing astronauts on the dark side of the moon, or building their first space station, We like the fool's that racism makes of Us, can't see past the things that should be default easy decisions. Now it's "us" vs "them"...stupid. who is "them," your NEIGHBORS?? YES THEY ARE. So we now have Being part of the Problem or Being part of the Solution. Anyhow, Congrats to You for having transcended all this rediculous finger pointing. Able to jump thru time to 1980, put on a "white mans cap" and Rock because it's the Music; and more, the Truth. Too bad more White Men don't recognize what a freedom it is to be Black, traveling in time (You), and Learn. In the end, it's NOT the White Race or Black Race...HELLO: THERE IS ONLY ONE RACE...THE HUMAN RACE. Recognize.

Yeah, kind of like Shooting Star, but more successful. I wish I’d seen them live. I bought the albums immediately, but my bf at the time was into punk & bands like Devo, The Tubes, Oingo Boingo, the B52s, etc. (weird flex, I know; his lack of appreciation for rock led to our demise as a couple). I enjoyed all those concerts; just glad that the Dead Kennedys and Sex Pistols didn’t tour nearby during that time. I’ve since seen Agent Orange. I was underwhelmed by the music, the performance, and the backstage amenities.

Triumph and RUSH were the soundtrack to my early teens. Man, thank you so much for this video, it's just what I needed right now.

This was my theme song during my fight against pancreatic cancer over the course of most of 2015. I am now 1,996 days post-surgery, with no signs of recurrence.
I do not know if they toured with Rush, but when I was in college back in 1977 at Norwich (the military college in Vermont), Molson brewery put on a beer bash in Montpelier. The bands were Triumph, Rush and April Wine.

Great song!!!! I like "Hold On" real well too.... You could check a band called April Wine also "I Like To Rock" and "Roller" would be my suggestions among a few others.

Hard to say if Rik is a better vocalist, guitarist or lyricist. What a talent!
