    It would be a fun feature for gravel or snow. It seems like for pavement it required pushing it much harder to get it loose than you have to with a rear drive car. It would be hard to find a good place to safely play with that on pavement - I guess a big parking lot.

      It's a little tougher due to it also still having AWD engaged you really gotta send an AWD car to get the sameish outcome of a rwd car with less effort

    Drift mode is undoubtedly a gimmick but a fun one!
    It's not really accurate to say that this or other clutch-based AWD systems can send up to 50% power to the rear wheels. Percentage torque splits make sense when you are describing a standard open differential (50:50) or something like one of the later (R)S model Quattros with a default 40:60 split and a 4:1 torque biasing ratio (80:20 to 20:80), but they are confusing when talking about a typical clutch-based AWD system. I like to think of it as if they are a part-time system that can vary from off to fully locked. When the clutch is disengaged, no torque goes to the rear (or possibly a small amount due to clutch drag or preload). When the clutch is fully engaged, up the maximum torque capacity of the clutch can be sent to the rear axle. In the case of the Mk8 Golf R, Magna claims up to 3500 NM (1750 NM per side) for the Performax Rear Drive module. That's more than the transmission output at max engine torque in first gear, so theoretically all of the power could be sent to the rear axle. In driving situations where the clutch is fully engaged and neither axle is struggling for traction, the split will indeed be 50:50. But if the front axle approaches the limit of grip, more power will be transferred through the rear axle, pushing the car forward and maintaining traction at the front. In these situations, quite possible under heavy weight transfer, more than 50% of the power is being delivered through the rear wheels.

    • @timetravellergec2043
      @timetravellergec2043 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bmw clutch based AWD can send it all to the rear. This is what I call a drift mode. VW must go back to basics. RWD biased AWD platforms with disconnectable front axle.

    • @rosskj9187
      @rosskj9187 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timetravellergec2043 It is just a gimmick based on the fact that it has a new torque vectoring differential. If you want RWD biased car get a BMW, Golfs and other VAGS simply should not be RWD biased since this changes the DNA of the cars entirely. Front wheel drive cars / front biased AWD cars are far easier to explore the limits of grip with, this makes them easier to drive fast for the majority of people due to understeer being more predictable than oversteer, BMW's are certainly targeted more towards driving enthusiasts (amongst luxuries) thus anyone who's owned/driven a BMW will tell you it's a hell of a lot more lethal on the limit than a FWD biased car. Each have their own target market and VW are doing it right with the Golf.

      As an mk7 golf r owner i have to say the Focus rs is way easier to drift , donuts , and way overenginiered fro street use, while the golf r is still a drag race vehicle and confort however i love the dsg and its engine capabilities. For sure i will trade in for the mk8 But golf r for drift nahhhhh, i don't see myself drifting n a golf r. Maybe focus rs if you want to drift.

      The GR yaris has a clutch based AWD system and it can send more power to the rear than the front under normal conditions.
      The secret is slightly higher gearing on the rear diff, which means that a full lock would be able to make the front tires slide, in which case they would brake the car if it ever did fully lock.
      But that doesn't mean anything for drifting obviously.

      The answer is rather simple. The rear diff has slightly longer gearing than the front one, so in a full lock scenario the front wheels would be slower than the rear ones, which means that all the forward torque goes through the rear wheels. The car doesn't actually do that, but it can do 70/30 with it.

    If you see Chris Harris review of the MK7 Golf R from several years back, he managed to get it sideways through a corner with a bone stock car. Granted it required a lot of speed with a Scandinavian flick, but it could be done. That is not ideal, but with some suspension modifications and proper alignment, you can have a LOT of sideways fun with an MK7.
    I think the MK8 new rear diff is an improvement, but it seems a relatively minor one. It might be a lot more effective with similar suspension modifications. I run -2.5 degrees of camber in front, -2 in back, slight toe out front a back, and stiffer springs, bushings... It is extremely balanced, gentle turn in results in nice four wheel drift, but a sharp turn in while lifting will make the rear easily come around but in a very controlled manner. It is not the fast way, but makes for easy adjustments when needed and can be a lot of fun.
    It seems the MK8 still needs some work for track use, the new diff helps but you don't need it to have a fun tail out track car.

    For drifting VWs, you should check in with The Drift Master, Tanner Foust. I think he is still a spokesman for VW. If you don't know Tanner, he was/is (?) a rally car and stunt driver. He was also the head driver for VW in the now-defunct GRC. Actually, it was the Beetles that killed the GRC. They won everything for three years in a row. Then GRC decided that everyone would have to run identical Fords. And that was the end.

    • @trader2473
      @trader2473 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, they are the same atleast thats is claimed, the way it drifts is super smart, transfering rear available power to the one wheel, left or right depend on the side you do slide. In order to proper drift awd system you need overdrive at the rear so the rear axle can spin faster than the front, but they do super smart system by transfering all power to the one wheel so it can brake traction and make it drift, but for proper drift you really need to upset a car, push it really hard and it can drift properly. Look how Benny L make it drift.

    Did you try holding the traction control button down for about 10 seconds ? With my old car there was a "Stability control" along with traction control that allowed both rear wheels to spin rather than just one side.

    Is the drift/drive mode similar to how “Adaptive Chassis Control” works?
    Follow up question- Can adaptive chassis control be turned off, or otherwise deleted? I can’t even stand ABS, a car controlling itself at the level of self adapting chassis control just sounds awful to me.
    As for the drift, if the torque converter shifts the power to the rear I’d say it’s possible to do legitimately. You still had to steer and control it.

    Why there is no Rear engine rear wheel drive hot batchback? Fwd isn't very ideal, front biased AWD is good but not so much and RWD doesn't make any sense in hatchback so only less compromise option i can think is RERWD.

    I’m a happy owner of a mrk8 R and I still don’t understand why the system cannot transfer 100% to the rear instead of 50%. It could be much better and more fun. The way on which I have to activate the drift mode is awkward and not only it doesn’t keep the last settings, but it changes the gauge cluster. I wish there was a way to overwrite that.

    • @HumbleMechanic
      @HumbleMechanic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I 100% agree.
      There power distribution from engine to rear is mechanical. So it can’t decouple the front like it does the rear. It’s mechanically linked

      @@HumbleMechanic VW should have designed arround this better and made the torque split much more adaptable, these cars have enough power to need more than 50% rear bias in some situations and other competitors like toyota or mercedes have already figured out ways to send more power to the back.

      @rolandm9750 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@victorcorpadea1340 If you're talking about the A45/CLA45, it's really not much different. I don't believe it can put more than 50% drive to the rear either. It uses L & R rear multi-plate clutches to transfer side to side, which is the same as the Golf R. The system may be different but it's mechanically achieving the same thing. The Focus RS is the only modern transverse AWD car I'm aware of that actually mechanically overdrives the rear, and by that it's only 1.8%
