I wonder why they burble/rasp like that? V6's (Nissan VQ) also share it too but less intense, but an Inline 6 (2JZ or B58) sounds very smooth. I assume its because V engines have an odd number of 3 cylinders per bank??
@@Josh-qm4rb their extraordinary sound comes form the difference in length of the inlet and exhaust tubes for the left and right cilinderbanks. I love the sound 😍

@@krudmuphinstudioz The term VR is a VW invention, and did not exist in the earlier Lancia iteration of these engines. Something to note: the 2.8 VR6 was only FWD. While the 2.9 VR6 was always coupled to a 4motion (4WD) drive train. VW did this to compensate for the loss of powering 2 wheels more.
Just came here to brag about the fact I owned a 2.8L VR6 Passat and currently own a 3.6L VR6 Touareg. It’s the best engine to have been produced. I’m surprised other manufacturers haven’t taken this model.
I have this 4:54 2.8L 200 hp VR6 engine in my 2004 MKIV GTI. Engine code BDF. The engine requires premium 91 octane fuel. Regular fuel (87 octane) is inadequate. I'm interested in understanding why you believe regular fuel is suitable for this engine.
BMC's Duncan Stuart developed an experimental Lancia-inspired 18-degree SOHC V4/V6 engine family that used a toothed rubber belt to drive a centrally-mounted camshaft, being conceived at the behest of Leonard Lord from about 56-58 (who wanted to replace BMC's various engines with a common engine family - the later E-Series being conceived for a similar unrealistic purpose) before being cancelled in late-62. The V4 was tested in a 1.1 and 2.0 forms (in the likes of the MGA, first MGB prototype and possibly even one A40 Farina in 1.1 form), though the V6 remained a paper project. The BMC 18-degree V4/V6 project however was dropped because of its alleged bulk/weight, inability to be mounted transversely in the upcoming FWD 1100/1300 and 1800/2200 (only longitudinally Triumph 1300 style - unlike the VW VR6), reputedly sounding rough by MG engineer Syd Enever who disliked the uneven exhaust note of the V4 configuration, being too costly to develop (and the cost of requiring a thorough refit of the Longbridge engine production facilities) as well as once the A-Series engine proved capable of being enlarged from 948cc to 1098cc (later 1275cc).
I used to own a V5 golf ... the original 10v version ... I had it re mapped and stuck a miltek exhaust on it... back in the day I thought it was amazing & fast ... but by today’s standards it was gutless & thirsty ... still... it sounded good & I loved it for about 6 years!
When I bought my Corrado a couple decades ago I knew from its earliest G60 problems that it was destined for the swap I still have my 92 but it's a 97 GTI under it all Maybe when I retire I'll do the turbo Quattro conversion but it'll always be a sweet sounding VR6
I have a 2019 SEL Premium and aside from wishing it had a Turbo option the way the Audi does, I actually like it just as well if not more than the Q7. I rented a 2019 Q7 for a week when it was new so I had experience with both. Seeing other Q7s on the road the Atlas just has a better overall look. It looks more aggressive and bigger (the Q7 seems to slouch [i.e. it sits lower) compared to the Atlas).
I had no idea this car existed. Thanks. It does indeed seem to tick all the right boxes, besides the price and the looks. I'll stick to a bora/jetta anytime

@@clevernduruza8624 That's not wrong. They are 2 VR-Banks on one Crankshaft. To Eddie: It triggers me everytime that these engines were called "W". Because a "W" will have 3 Zylinder-Banks. The VW-engines are more "doubble-V's or doubble-VR's". In my opinion. 😀

Always thought they were such a badass motor design. Had one in my VW Touareg. That while car is over engineered for the USA. Damn thing it was fast. AWD too
yeah I was also surprised, but it also makes sense. More cilinders means more torque at lower rpm, and with the low combustion given by Lpg you need as many as possible. Also fits into a small space
Sound from VR6 is awesome. I wonder why WV is not using this design today, instead of V6, it would be their signature. Of course with turbo, in audi RS series :-)

I love VR6 engines!! They aren't just a gimmick either, they are awesome for the innovation made by VW's. I love that they can fit in the same engine cavity as an I-4 engine. Straight 6 engines don't make any sense to me, they're HUGE and unnecessary. Although I guess VW can't talk about inefficient sized engines like their W's...especially in the very short lived Phaeton's.

Wow awesome history! I didn't know all of the different versions of the vr6 and how many vehicles actually used it. It is one of my top 3 favorite engines.
Just a small tip on car model pronunciation, Leon is not pronounced Lyon as the city in France, but as Leon, the city in Spain.
VR6 sounds so awesome...😎 Especially MK4 and MK5 R32 with Milltek exhaust.
I had a manual B4 Passat with 174 bhp VR6 engine 15 years ago - it was a real BLAST to drive, i'm still nostalgic and i drive BMW M5 now lol :)))
the V4 has a lot of sense in a 2 strokes uniflow overcharged engine
even with its 90° offset between piston and firing interval
I have 3.6Liter VR6 300HP N/A and its best sounding 6cyl engine I ever heard. And everybody who went with my car said the same ♥️♥️
I have a Mk4 VW Jetta GLI (First owner) and a 2013 Porsche 991.1 C2S. Both manuals. Both are a lot of fun!
Just crank my vr6 up a few minutes ago just to hear that vr6 sound! Love that sound!
Something to note: the 2.8 VR6 was only FWD. While the 2.9 VR6 was always coupled to a 4motion (4WD) drive train. VW did this to compensate for the loss of powering 2 wheels more.
Corrado vr6 was a 2.9 and fwd.
I know lift trucks are rear steering but the smoothness of that accelerated turn looked like a sweet drift
i love the sound and peformance of my 2007 VW R32 with its VR6, amazing stock standard 4x4 car, cant beat it on my local roads over mountain..
Golf Mk3 VR6 and Golf Mk4 R32 appeared at our gas station. They look very cool and sound even better
Oh I miss the sound of the VR6.
I miss my old Golf 4 with v6 and 4 motion. It was so fun to drive.
Thank you very much for these videos you do it is fascinating to see the history and how things have turned out!
When I heard Lancia v4 I instantly saw the fulvia in my mind
Exelente Motor VW 👉👍 Que Salió En Golf Jetta y Passat 👍
I used to own a V5 golf ... the original 10v version ... I had it re mapped and stuck a miltek exhaust on it... back in the day I thought it was amazing & fast ... but by today’s standards it was gutless & thirsty ... still... it sounded good & I loved it for about 6 years!
Heard the VR6 was also conceived as a 2.4-litre 24v during its development before being enlarged to 2.8-litres 12v by the time it reached production.
RV6
When I bought my Corrado a couple decades ago I knew from its earliest G60 problems that it was destined for the swap
I still have my 92 but it's a 97 GTI under it all
Maybe when I retire I'll do the turbo Quattro conversion but it'll always be a sweet sounding VR6
Vr6 was a beast the first time i sat in a burgundy with factory bbs alloys. The noise is unforgetable
This is a very good layout, cant belive is not so popular
I really like my VR6 Atlas. It's a big car.
I tell my friends it's an Audi A7 with 20 less things to go wrong and 1/2 the price.
It looks more aggressive and bigger (the Q7 seems to slouch [i.e. it sits lower) compared to the Atlas).
one of the exklusive ways of owning a VR6;is the Artega GT which has the 3.6 VR6 as a mid Engine and rear wheel Drive.
I had no idea this car existed. Thanks. It does indeed seem to tick all the right boxes, besides the price and the looks. I'll stick to a bora/jetta anytime
8:52 that bike sounds amazing!
Almost balanced, compact and only have a single cylinder head with 6 cylinders. The VR6 is underrated.
Appia have the narrov V angle - 10°14’, Fulvia has 12°53’28” ; good video!
The sound is just heavenly....
Wow, super cool. I love how crafty we can be
Just a little hint VR actually stands for "versetzte reihe" stupidly translated as "not-inline-inline" @visioracer :) great work as always
I own a 1998 Passat B5 Syncro with 2.3 vr5 engine, what I can say I love the sound so much
P.S Visio, if you want any clips for a TH-cam video with it just tell me and I am gonna send some.
I love these engines if you can't tell by my username lol. But I've had many of these engines. I currently own one. They are great. Good reliability, durable, small (relative), simple, powerful, and absolutely stunning sounds from every variant ever made.
12v 24? Mk3? 4?
@@TooFlyNico 12v mk3!! Got me a ginster yellow 98. And I just sold my Mk4 12v to a friend, with all my sister Mk4 bits.
Great video👍 thank you
Long live the VR6! I’d also love to hear a V4 Lancia in real life.. and that VR Linde forklift too;-)
i like how this video included the lesser knows facts as well finnaly a one stop vr6 info video :P
Vr6's are probably my favourite engine, I'd love to swap one into my z3
They just sold that same Pontiac you showed with the old straight 8 fireball it was in a 42 pre war car !!!! $ something like 72000 btw I loved every vw I had
You should do an in depth on the W8, W12, and W16 engines!
I thought they were just vr engines joined.
@@DJDEVIL82 Absolutely true. It gets me every time too... More like a "V V" than a "W".
@@rosstihh2220 it is pronounced as ( Double V ) in several European countries
A custom VR-8 would be incredible if one ever existed.
Bugatti chiron has Double VR8 😆
Lancia Trikappa (1922)
My friend owns a straight piped golf 4 vr6 2.8 12v and ut sounds amazing😁
A lot of unknown engines existed back in the day. Quite a few different small tractor companies designed and made their own flat boxer engines and some other strange flat engine designs. Search Pioneer tractor company, my favorite design.
Rarely known
The VR6 was Also found in the Mercedes W638 shape.
As the engine room was too small for a V6. The VR6 2.8 was found in the Mercedes V280 mated to an automatic only.
The VR6 engine was also found in the Artega GT sports car
This video was amazing. Saving this one. 👍
Always thought they were such a badass motor design. Had one in my VW Touareg. That while car is over engineered for the USA. Damn thing it was fast. AWD too
Happy tp see some VR5 owners in the comment section :D
I'm daily driving a Golf MK4 VR5 4Motion (20v/AQN Engine)
A VR6 engine in a forklift truck?? Now I've heard everything!
yeah I was also surprised, but it also makes sense. More cilinders means more torque at lower rpm, and with the low combustion given by Lpg you need as many as possible. Also fits into a small space
Just sending out a thankz ,,,
love your work ...
I'm always watching !!!

Thanks, David!
VW Corrado VR6 is by far the best car that suits that engine.. Perfect style & sound
We love the 3.6 VR6 in our Cayenne. Enough power for an SUV, with none of the issues Porsche’s V8s are experiencing.
good job man! Yeah that immobilzer would of been horrible to have to do all that work and that be the issue !! awesome job man
Sound from VR6 is awesome. I wonder why WV is not using this design today, instead of V6, it would be their signature. Of course with turbo, in audi RS series :-)
I believe they shelved it for emissions reasons and went the direct injection route.
@@MrTheHillfolk hmm I don't think this engine layout couldn't be direct injection & turbo from factory.
I was thinking about modern engine with this layout.
So miss my excellent car that even made it into the Euro tuner magazine in the late 90s. I had MK4 Rave Green 2.8L VR6 excellent, manual shift, lowered, heated and leather seats, new headers, cold air intake, full exhaust, 18in BBS rims, carbon fiber hood glass HID headlights leather interior much more more just magazine talk lol. Euro tuned up batch's, shaded black back taillights. My challenge is only the nice R32 3.2L VR's in races. ✌️
don't forget the v8 vr known as the w8 and w12. it is 2 vr 4's in a v motor, or a vr in a v combination. great motors.
I owned two of these, a '92 Corrado SLC with 2.8 liters and 178/190* hp [190 after my mods], and a '97 Jetta GLX with 174 hp and a fucking slush pump automatic transmission.
-These engines are HOOLIGANS! Their sound and they way they develop power entice you to drive them hard. Sure, the four cylinder turbos can be way faster, but the VR6 is one that seems to say to you:
"Come on baby...What about another 1000 rpm; Don't you want to hear my sweet voice? Let's EAT THAT FUCKING HONDA~!"
Volkswagen's best engine EVER. When this came out, I thought there would be about 5 Japanese copies within 10 years, but only one very small motorcycle company has tried this design, which is puzzling since it is ~~PERFECT~~ for a full dress cruiser bike.
Great video as always!
Just because of this video...
