HELLO & WELCOME TO OUR MOUNTAIN HOMESTEAD! This channel is all things home, from homemaking, to homesteading and homeschooling.
    ABOUT
I'm Shayla, an earthy mountain mama to 6 wildlings, & a blessed wife to one since 2004. We're a big, Jesus loving, God fearing family & we love to laugh! Hubby & I are second generation homeschoolers, & have been homeschooling our children from the start-since around 2009. We were raised unconventionally, and our parents utilized homesteading before it was trendy, and it was a goal and dream of ours to do the same-but it's only been recently that we have been able to bring this dream to full potential. Last year the Heavenly Father brought to life our dream that we've had for over 25 years and enabled us to begin buying a mountain homestead fixer upper, so join us in the adventures and fun here at our new homeschool/homestead! Be sure to subscribe. In 2023 my goal is to upload once a month.

It just amazes me how you relate so well to a plethora of women in different phases and circumstances of their lives. There's only one explanation that I can think of, it's that God is ministering through you to all of us. How amazing is that? He reaches us all where we're at. I pray for heaps of blessings to be poured out on you and your family. Thank you for being lead.

To the mother asking how to deal with loss of sleep: I just want to say,it is hard and i feel for you!! Give yourself grace and take naps when you can,let things slide if you must, functioning on little sleep is seriously so hard 😢 i have 4 children ranging in age 2 yrs to 8 yrs and only now feel like I'm back to myself. I feel much younger than I did 5 yrs ago. It does get better and you will get many more yrs with your children to go on picnics and all the fun activities you are feeling guilty for not doing. Believe me, people who say,"enjoy them, theyre only so little once!" Definitely forgot what those early yrs are like.😅 i have always loved my children but now i can enjoy them so much more that i am out of the baby stage. Hang in there,it gets much better!❤

Thanks for sharing! We have 8 children and we had many who were unsupportive with our family size. Those who were most vocal proved to be poor parents themselves. We have an amazing family life and now we are adopting through family services. Now, we have nothing but positive words spoken to us. God bless you for trusting Him!

When I got pregnant with my twins last year (babies #7&8) after years of fertility issues I was beyond excited and happy! But I didn't tell a single person in my family because I didn't want to hear the criticism and judgements that I always get. I ended up going into labor too soon and lost both Babies. The only family members that showed up to the funeral were my parents. None of my 5 brothers showed up.
So I totally get and understand the not telling family and some friends about being pregnant again. You need to be able to be joyful and excited about having another little blessing without the negativity from other bringing you down and ruining it.

We have a lot in common. I had very similar experiences when I got saved, my dad left when I was 2, we haven't had a lot of support in our homeschooling journey, and I could probably say more but I forgot the others. Anyway, thanks for sharing so much of yourself. You're very real and humble. It's so easy to listen to you, it makes me wish we could meet. God bless ❤

I developed Hashimoto's Disease after my second child. I had 16 miscarriages (15 at 6 weeks and 1 at 3 months). I would have liked more children but it was not meant to be. I am now the grandmother of two children and I am enjoying them so much. It makes me so happy to be able to help my daughter with child care and housekeeping.

Such great info, thank you for being real and sharing! :-) I have been told by a physician that I have Hoshimoto's also...and yet I don't know too much what to do about it. I did try a synthetic med but my body reacted horribly to it. Anyhow, I wonder do you know of a good resource you use for info for thyroid issues? I didn't know about the gluten, that's so interesting...wow. Ps I love LOVE hearing how married couples have met, especially who love the Lord, so fun! I laughed a lot in that part, thank you! 😀

I've had bad reactions to some brands of Levothyroxine too. Sometimes you have to try different brands to see what works best for you. The one I found that works is gluten free and dye free. I also found a video that I'll link to that listed supplements that help.
      I hope this helps!

I hear you, Shayla... I, too, worked myself into sickness & injury with high expectations of myself. Unfortunately I always have much higher expectations of myself than anyone else does & I also have this bad habit of having ridiculously high expectations of others, too. It does not make me too popular of a person when I start going down that road. I am much, much better now, but it took a chronic illness, that the Dr.s still cannot diagnose, and a serious spinal injury/surgery to take me down a peg. When you are someone that holds yourself & others to super high standards you drive yourself crazy. For me, I don't change goals before meeting them, I just refuse to ever set goals in the first place because, "I probably just won't do it right anyway." And it makes it hard for people to be my friend when I expect them to be some type of super human that has no flaws, or won't "do everything the way I think they ought to, because I am 'always right'". I have had to work really hard - thru prayer, acceptance, & counseling to let a lot of this go (Let go & Let God) & it is a daily task for me. I actually 'gave' myself a nervous breakdown by 24 yrs old, anxiety, depression, & clinical OCD ( I actually "came to" one day @ 2am ironing every single garment in our house, surrounded by piles of clothing, bare closets, and drenched in sweat before I would admit that I had a problem. I am not sure, to this day, how long I had been ironing ...) I was having repeated panic attacks, which cost me my job & almost cost me my family. I could not get behind the wheel of a car for about a year. I had trouble going to stores alone. Even once I got over all of that, I still had incredibly high standards of 'work accomplished' for myself & anytime I would undergo a stressful situation my reaction was to do physical work. In this way, I severely injured my back - I blew out 3 disks & had to have my spine fused & am in need of 2 more surgeries that the dr.s say I am too young for. My husband has a saying that he learned in AA. "God will do whatever it takes to get your attention". I truly believe that now. NOW, I have no choice but to stop & smell the roses because I literally can not keep up the pace that I was forcing myself to. I still do TONS of work because our lifestyle demands it, but it is work that I love....& IF I get carried away, I get set right back on my heels again.

@@mountainhomesteadfamily thx....I think we could have alot to talk about too : ). I just am loving your videos. I watched a bunch last year, but then abstained from computer usage (other than school related) during Lent...then gardening took over LOL & no time. This is the lull time for me until garden season & I have been backtracking on all the ones I missed. I love how you keep it real & find the joy in situations that others would only see the negative. I try to not focus on pain. I keep on truckin' on & I take my mind off of it by focusing on others & not talking about it too much. I balance accepting what I should not do anymore, with working hard enough that I don't go the 'other way' Ha ha. Many people don't even know that I have anything 'wrong' with me.

I can relate so much with your story. Growing up in a cult and not having family supportive of a bigger family. I have 5 and I decided that when God blesses us with another we will keep it to ourselves. It helps we moved out of state and have little to no contact with family. I feel like my post partum was harder because of the stress that came with family. I don’t think 5 is that many kids but apparently people thought we were getting to carried away and that we should make sure we have the money for them. I believe God will provide. It didn’t help we got married and 9mo later we had our first. I was 19 and my husband was 21. We felt they thought we didn’t know what we are doing. I don’t regret having 5 kids in 7 and 1/2 years.

People thought my husband & were crazy, too. We don't have many kids (only 2) but we had our first child less than a year after meeting. It was not an ideal to live up to - as we had our first daughter before being married, after only dating for 3 mos. I would not recommend it to anyone else & we certainly were not living according to God's will, at that time. BUT...we did get married shortly after her birth & and have been together for 22 years now. Many people had LOTS of opinions on what we should do & when we should do it. I always wished that I had had more kids, but a nervous breakdown, lack of $, lack of family support, and not being very strong in our faith (at that point) led us to limit the amount of kids. It is something I sometimes regret - but I try not to dwell, because all in all we are a pretty happy unit of 4. We both came from largish family backgrounds (my mom is one of 10, my dad one of 5, his mom one of 5 and we are both one of 4 in our families) and I think we came off with a very negative view, due to OUR family's situations. Several of these families had abuse, poverty, addiction, mental health issues etc..as major issues, then add in a severe genetic disorder on my mom's side & we didn't have a very good example of what a healthy large family should look like. I have since confessed to my former lack of trust in God & making my decision to NOT have any more children a surgical permanency. There was actually alot of pressure on US to do the opposite of what you are describing. My MIL was pushing us to have MORE kids while I was still pregnant with the 1st & she was very upset when we shared that we were NOT having any more kids after the 2nd was born, because they were both girls & she thought I was 'cheating' my husband out of having a son. So that goes to show you that, big or small, someone/everyone has an opinion & mostly they should keep it to themselves. (as long as said children are being cared for (not abused or neglected) I mind my own business.

The church experiences have been heart breaking, but in the end I've definitely seen more of what God is and is not for, and learned more about mankind. After wrestling at God with Him at times I've learned more about Him, and His mercies, and that even though this world can have so much evil, He is still GOOD!

Oh wow. So many questions and LOADS of subscribers too. Congratulations to you!
I am going to watch this slowly and come back and forth over the day to comment.
I am so sorry to hear of your miscarriages. That sounds very difficult and hard. I love how you were inspired by people with large families. I grew up around large families as well (my one aunt and uncle have 10 kids, one of my best friends was the oldest of 9 kids and she died two years ago a few days after complications of her 7th birth, and a family with 7 kids used to take me in a couple times every single week in the summers when I was a child).
It is awesome you are able to grow your own food. So commendable.
I love your dream you had and that you were able to accomplish it.
Ah, yeah I meal plan because I have no room to bulk buy at all in my tiny home.
6 months different is NOT cradle robbing haha. You were both in the cradle in the same year.
That is a cute way to be baptized. I delayed for soooo long because I wanted a river or lake baptism, but I was, I think 24 when I finally got baptized in a church tub. I think that our faith can mature over time, so all the years you stated, you were a believer :)
I am glad that gardening and housework keeps you active. That is good to not sit too much.
Great advice to the parent who seems overwhelmed and tired.
I'm sorry you didn't receive enough support. Sounds like some pretty rough church experiences and extended family problems that you handled pretty well. I am sure it was not easy at the time though.

I always love reading your comments, Justice Pirate! Thank you! And your comment about us both being in the cradle the same year made me laugh out loud!
I'm am so sorry you lost your best friend. How traumatic for everyone involved.
I agree, faith can mature over time and I love how you put that.

Hi again. I’m not sure if my previous message went through and was deleted. I came across your channel recently just because I was looking for gluten free site and when I searched autoimmune/gluten free your channel came up. It’s a beautiful channel and definitely you are gifted with photography and editing. I was recently diagnosed with celiac either disease and I must say was a big shock because I’m not young but suffered probably with autoimmune illness for decades, hence very premature menopause at 35, only 2 children although wanted more and never used any form of contraceptive measures and I married young at 21. Life throws unexpected curveballs. There is a need for more information about gluten and why the sensitivity to this protein is on the rise. Very little information out there about the agricultural methods used nowadays with the sharp increase of pesticides and especially glyphosate over the past twenty years ( up to 400 times is used today compared to two decades ago) which ends up in high quantities in the flour and hence in our bodies. Also with fast food process everywhere the bread we buy is not made using the slow process our ancestors used and gluten is not properly broken down hence is harder to digest by most people. There will be more and more people with this kind of allergy and autoimmune illnesses triggered by wheat/gluten/glyphosate. So there will be more search on the internet on gluten free panification or even on how to acquire glyphosate free flour and bake your own. It seems you mastered this information and used it in your cooking so please forgive my suggestion to create a separate channel if you have time with clear instructions on how you make your bread for instance. I found very few channels focusing on these aspects and very few have your video quality and editing capabilities. One can see that you had training in photography, because your channel’s videos and your blog has beautiful images and content. God bless!

Hello, I'm sorry your previous comment didn't go through, I bet it timed out before you hit the send, that happens to me sometimes if I take too long responding to comments. I've screen shot your comment so as to keep and remember it! I do believe glyphosate is hugely to blame. Thank you for sharing this.

What brand of Ashwaghanda do you take? I have trouble finding it knowing what are trustworthy supplement sources. I suffer from Crohn’s and some supplements flare it up, but others are so helpful IF I get a good source.

Shaya, do you know anything about Milliken Science books? I can't seem to find any info about them. I bought them and I am wondering WHY I'm not hearing about them anywhere??

Yes, Joyful Acres! I have a few. A lot of them are old and out of print/not current, which could be why they are not talked about, I thought they were all out of print but double checked and I'm not sure why the newer ones are not talked about. Good question! I'll have to look into that.

I have celiac disease and have to be so careful about what I eat. I can seem to only have whole foods. I have totally gotten my health back eating modified paleo diet. I also have ti avoid tomatoes. Have you had issue with tomatoes? My son and daughter also can't have tomatoes anymore.

I have not had trouble with tomatoes that I'm aware of, thankfully! Celiac is so hard!

Lol, glad I am not the only one whose husband calls them a cradle robber or his old lady because if being 6 mon older than him.😂 Lots of wisdom in this video from your answers. I worried about future spouses for my children because we homeschool - I just need to give that to God bc he will lead their guidance on that. Ideas for hypothyroidism is some thing I have to watch due to genetics and my teen daughter does also now as she had flags on her bloodwork.

My aunt has hashimotos, and she had multiple miscarriages and sometimes there wasn't a baby in the sac. She did have 2 children, but she was in her late 30's before she was able to have 2 healthy babies.

Have you ever gene tested yourself for MTHFR. It’s a genetic mutation that causes miscarriage because it’s causes blood clotting. The way to get around that is baby aspirin during pregnancy. My sister in law had multiple miscarriages and tested herself and after staying on baby aspirin when pregnant she has not had any more miscarriages. I hope this helps.
