I no longer buy anything cuz I'm in the first period of minimalism (I started in the 25/01/2020) so I decided to stop buying for a year until I recognize my needs and declutter all the things I don't like/use
Simple Happy Zen I totally agree with the scarves!...they do look good on everyone and don’t cost much so it’s easy to buy yourself a number of them. I reduced the amount I have to ones I do wear all the time and go with most of my clothes.
I stopped buying mostly all things. Living on basic things now. I got one awesome link th-cam.com/video/g2aQ2e0ch8k/w-d-xo.html must check. I only have essential clothes and other house hold stuff. I don't use smartphone now. Many things downsized. Happy to see you always 😍😍😍❤❤
After my mom passed away I had a hard time letting go of some of her things. I got through it by reminding myself that I have her DNA forever. What more do I need.
Mom was a hoarder. She loved and collected swans, and I took one ceramic swan, and an ashtray that enchanted two-year old me. It's perfect for votive candles.
My mother just died recently😪. May her soul rest in peace. I have to clear the house now. It is full of dokuments, papers, offers from supermarket, advert 😂😂😂
I was the same. I get really upset when I think of things I have got rid of that belonged to my mother who died when I was 7. I have started reminding myself that I will always be part of her and that means more than any material item.
This pandemic has taught me that there are a lot of things I can do without. I have been able to save a ton of money because I'm not eating out or shopping for things I never needed in the first place.
@ Exactly! Even Bible Study on Wednesday's (via Zoom) require no "church clothing" which is awesome! Same with work clothing for those of us working from home now. I have to semi comb my hair and put on a shirt twice per week when we have zoom meetings. Otherwise, a nightgown works. And, because I'm comfortable, I get 200% more work done AND I tend to work longer hours without meaning to because there are fewer distractions. 💖
OMG like random trips to the mall! I haven't been to a mall since the pandemic. It's saved me monies, and I love just people watching there, or just sitting and writing there but it's not a necessity.
Thank you Miranda! :) I think it's important to realize that what works for me, might be different for someone else. And I don't have any illusions that I have everything figured out haha.
I still buy new books like once a year at a book fair in my town. Other than that, I buy second hand, go to the library or use my ereader. But when I'm done with a physical book, I gift it. That way, it doesn't pile up in my bookshelf. I keep my favourites though.
I am also a minimalist myself, but I actually watch your videos only because I am learning English language, you speak very clearly and I understand you very well. Greetings from Holland.
I no longer buy decorations, or collectables. I rarely wear makeup, & I only have two sheet sets . I am new to minimizing but am working toward it to cause me less stress & less time cleaning. We don’t need so much stuff to be happy.
I love how you don't spend a lot of time focusing on/speaking about one topic. You know how to minimize your lists and time getting directly to your point. Love it and your videos! :)
Thanks for a great video! I have a tip for reducing unnecessary gift clutter. I ask everyone not to buy me gifts, but instead to do something nice for someone else and then share what they did with me. That way love gets spread all around, and that's the best gift ever! I used to keep some memorabilia, but then figured out that I could take pictures of the things and then donate or discard them. I now look at the pictures and reminisce much more often than I ever looked at the things themselves.
I think minimalism is about being aware of what you personally need in your daily life vs what want in the moment. Giving in to spontaneous urges is usually not going to benefit us in the long run. And while it might be really tempting to buy lots of Christmas decorations on sale it can also be really stressing to have a lot of stuff laying around, taking up space etc.
From you I see that at the heart of minimalism can be a beautiful sense of self - of freely admitting what you like & don’t like with no apologies - and then giving yourself the permission to live that way - no need to ask anyone else.
Hi Vera! My younger sister passed away 2 years ago May 15th. That has been one of the hardest things I've ever had to deal with. She was my dearest, and closest friend. My life has not been the same since. I started not caring about anything and just wanted to be by myself. Last August, I made the decision to live again, and knew I had to make changes in my life. After making the decision to downsize my belongings, I came across your channel. I thought you were wonderful, and your calming influence and strategy ideas have really helped me in so many ways. I just wanted to say thank you. You don't realize how many lives you touch with your kind and gentle spirit. Keep doing what you're doing and may God bless you and keep you safe! ♥️
Wow Barbara, thank you for your kind comment, I don't know what to say. I'm so sorry for your loss and I think it's wonderful you're making these changes and investing in your happiness. Take care my friend!!!
Barbra, "those we love don't go away they walk beside us everyday, unseen, unheard but always near, still missed, still loved and very dear" I hope this gives you some comfort. Well done for getting positive. My friend lost her sister they were very close, she said she had to live life for the two of them now. God Bless sending positive energy from Ireland.
After going through several coffee pots; I decided on my favorite: a pour-over cone! No moving parts. Makes coffee from boiling water just fine. Used one while camping and then wondered why I buy a machine to do that. Some have a fine mesh so you don't need to buy filters, either! Just one coffee cup.
I totally agree about the uncomfortable shoes!!! I finally made the decision that life is too short to worry with uncomfortable shoes/heels. I now wear mules, espadrilles, and slides if I need some height, but they are comfy.
It's sad but even grocery shopping is stressful these days. I believe more people may embrace minimalism because of this virus episode in history. It has woken up a lot of people about what's important, including the need to save for a rainy day. Thanks for buying cruelty-free!
I use my toaster oven almost daily. It’s a multipurpose item that actually saves a ton of energy when you’re just toasting/broiling/heating up something small.
I love my toaster oven! I can cook and reheat and toast in it which does away with standard toasters AND microwaves (which I steer clear of altogether.) Toaster ovens are easier to clean than toasters too. I remember being a kid and my brother and I learning the hard way what you should NOT put in a toaster because it can start a fire! Slices of pizza, for instance.... 😁
I Bought A Toaster Oven A Few Yrs Ago When My Oven Stopped Working.. I Couldn't Afford To Fix Or Replace It At The Time.. My Burners Worked Just Fine.. Mostly Bought One That Could Fix A Pizza!. 😂 But I Used It For So Much More!. In The Heat Of The Summer I Didn't Need To Heat Up My Kitchen With The Oven!. Barbecue Outside Works Too!. 👍
I really liked when you said you don't buy non-cruelty free products. This is also something that I implemented in my life 1.5 years ago. The variety of cruelty-free products are now more than ever, and I find prices are on the similar range as well. This including house cleaning as well. I really like how I can make a choice where other beings are not suffering from my choice for visual purposes.
For those that simply dont want to give up physical books or simply cant budget for an Ereader right now, I have started checking out books from my local public library. Now im not spending $15 + on a new book every month and I dont have an over flowing bookshelf anymore!
I'm moving for the first time since going minimalist and it's so beautifully odd not having to stress out over "will the closet/kitchen cabinetry/bathroom cabinetry be big enough?!"
I don’t buy food or beverages to go anymore. I changed my hairstyle to low maintenance. No TV, no dishwasher. Appreciate what I have & think carefully about bringing more stuff into the house
I don't own a Fitbit, but my mom can't live without it 😄 I think I could get rid of almost everything from this list except books, my car (not so good public transportation here...) and holiday decorations 😍 That makes me sooo happy every year! I rarely buy something new, but I could never trash anything I currently own. Thank you Vera for opening my eyes for some of these stuff :)
I do nearly all of your 50 things except for the wine, and vegan. I use no moisturizers or lotions, though. I moved into a tiny house on wheels that I designed for myself, and live in 182 square feet (17 s.m.) and find it very freeing. I got rid of so many books, clothes, towels, dishes, shoes, cleaning products, and even vitamins. I haven't used detergent for years, I got rid of my fridge, and clothes washer, bought a hand washer, a spinner, and a deep freezer. I have a cooler for milk and spoilable food in the summers. The deep freeze is because I love ice cream and smoothies, and I can just refreeze the water bottles for ice. I also found that I don't get dirty, except for my hands and feet, so I use liquid dishwash for my clothes, skin, and dishes. Vinegar instead of deodorant, creme rinse for my hair, and for cleaning. Baking soda for cleaning tougher things to get clean. My vacuum cleaner is still the one I got over 40 years ago. Still going strong. Life is so much more pleasant with room and time, rather than stuff. I kept my sewing things, because I loved to sew, and since eye surgeries, I can see well enough to start again. How wonderful is that? If I want new clothes, I can make them, but, why? lol Only for selling, I'm thinking. Simple linen things, and quilted wall art. Artists do collect too many things. I do have an outer storage place for my tools and gardening stuff. I seldom cook from recipes any longer, just try out different combinations of foods. I have a deep pantry, so I can make nearly anything I can invent. That's what takes up lots of room, but I have shelves for them. Very few things really have to be refrigerated. I just buy fresh ingredients more often, and use them up before they go bad. And I put sugar and milk in my tea. Every afternoon. How fortunate for you that you found this early in life. It took me too long, but I'd never go back to a large house, or lots of stuff. Or owning a television.
I think you are generous in the way you present your personal choices. If others disagree, you seem to continue respecting them - and I deeply appreciate that. Your reasons/explanations for your choices are insightful and helpful. Keep it up! You are a treasure ❤
You are right about scented candles and air fresheners. They are toxic chemicals. I love how you share what you do and don't do, and then instead of shaming, you say it's your personal preference. You are very pleasant and motivating. Minimalism IS so personal and different for everyone. I have been sensitive to my clutter since I was a teenager. I am much more conscious about my purchases than I used to be because I want them to add to my life and home, not take away.
We no longer use large bath towels to dry ourselves after showering. We now use a small hand towel that dries us just as well. The reason is they take up a lot less space in the washer than those large bath towels. You end up saving on energy, soap, water and less laundry. Anyway, it works for us. Keep up the great videos!
hmm interesting and good point on fitting them in the washing machine! I take a small towel when traveling but love being wrapped in a big towel after a shower or bath.
I recently upgraded from a Fitbit to an Apple Watch, after thinking about it for literal years. It makes my life a lot better (it helps me to work out, meditate, and get better sleep).
I am so happy to have met you Vera! I'm an 85 yr old woman and have been decluttering for quite some time. Over the years I have accumulated so much 'stuff' which I am happy now to donate or pass to someone who has a use for it. I have stopped going to garage sales and thrift. I am happiest when I can eliminate things from my apartment and my life and simply focus on what makes me happy. My baritone ukulele, my watercolor materials, my toaster and coffee pot are my most pleasurable things. Thank you for sharing your minimalist, I look forward to all your videos. BTW, do you live in Amsterdam? Just curious... 🤔 😊
Sylvia Mena I can join the club too! I am happy with my old ordinary watch, and I’m the only one who doesn’t have a fancy Fitbit or an Apple Watch at my workplace 😁
I think it depends on how/if you use it. I recently got an Apple Watch after debating for years about it and it’s one of the best purchases I’ve made, but I’m a marathon runner and the ease it gives me tracking my runs and other activities as well as music and phone calls, etc when I’m out make it worth it. But, if you’ve no need to track/utilise those sorts of things then there’s no point in getting one
I also know from the ads I get fed on Facebook etc that they compile way more information about me than they need. I must've agreed to something like club cards at stores that said they could have access to what I buy with my debit card. I bought an ankle brace at Walgreens 3 nights ago and "suddenly" I'm seeing ads for other ankle treatment, etc. That's really specific. I looked up something on Google and "suddenly" I was flooded with ads for that. I don't own a smart TV. The tv. I've had for 20 years works fine and no one can tailor ads to my data.
I am new to your channel and have never considered myself a minimalist. However, I already follow 95% of these things that you don’t buy any more. How exciting! I’m really enjoying your channel.
I've stopped buying kitschy souvenirs for myself, but I always buy at least one region-specific (preferably handmade by a native/local) thing from that country that I can use as decor in my home. That way my decor supports local artists and is meaningful to me, as well as being a good conversation starter 😊
I do this too! Decor, or a local book or handmade, local jewelry or clothing item. For example, when I went to Ireland in 2010, I bought a beautiful, handmade wool capelet which I've worn consistently every winter since then. When I visited the Mendocino coast in Northern California, I bought a painting by a local artist which I love. That sort of thing. LOL, I have to admit though, I too love a good silly fridge magnet. The one I got from the Lizzie Borden house in Fall River MA is probably my favorite. It defies description but gallows humor is probably a good way to put it.
Very nice. Living in a small Indian mountain town, with limited living space, is in itself a good teacher in minimalism. And, since I live alone, it’s even easier. So, I don’t own a refrigerator, a microwave oven, a washing machine, a vacuum cleaner, or a mixie. I do, however, own an electric kettle, and (something that you don’t own!) a toaster ( which like you, I use very little). My one luxury? A hot water electric geyser both for bathing and in the kitchen. Of course, the concept of dish washers is still alien here. Most of my cooking is on gas stoves. And being Indian, even in a small place, my ultimate comfort zone is my “daily help” who makes day to day living so enjoyable and peaceful. What is a “fitbit” by the way?
I have a commercial Oreck vacuum- my parents have the same one and they bought it when I was in 7th grade- I’m almost 34 now and it’s still going strong. This vacuum works incredibly well and it’s built to be repaired instead of replaced. I’ve gone through 5 other vacuums, including two Dysons, in the past ten years, so I look forward to not wasting any more money on fancy vacuums that are built for planned obsolescence.
I love how you are honest and say you still like these items and also avoid for example magazines and sale sections because of temptations. Stuff breeds more stuff no matter how small.
I’ve become a minimalist around 2 years ago. Big decisions to make at first, such as moving out of the city, escaping a “rat race” but I got to the point, where I really had enough! I don’t need much to be happy, just a simple and stress free life, surrounded by a beautiful nature (also a vegan since last October!) 😁
Simplicity is the way to go! I lived in that “Old Fashion Time”! I go back in time and go ... it is so peaceful and quiet! I realize some things we need ... but a lot we do not! Thanks for sharing and keep on doing it “ Your Way!”!🌹
I love your channel and your personality. I must say that I agree with almost everything. Since last year when I became a vegan and started letting go of most of my possessions. Everyone in my family thought I've lost my mind. Indeed, I meditated and moved because of a job opportunity. Your whole list of Don't Buys is great! 1. My workout equipments: a chair, the stairs, and a yoga mat. 2. New way of transport: bicycle (summer/spring/ fall) Taxi or bus (winter) 3. A new way of beauty products: Homemade natural face cleanser/ soap/ shampoo (Here on TH-cam we have great multi-talented people who can show you how to's ) & containers can be upcycled glass or metal. 4. Cookbooks & Fashion Books: Pinterest, Other websites, & Fashion Lookbook on YT. 5. Fancy bed sheets, throw pillows or blankets: If Really Needed Only. I have just 1, 1, 2, 1. 6. Home décor items & scented candles/aroma sprays: Define who you are, be you. Make a cute home decor item -- 1 or 2. Today thanks to many amazing TH-camrs, you can make your own scented sticks or rocks. It's not required that you own all the equipment. 7. Plastic shopping bag/ Subscription cards/ Special Sales: Own one or two [depending on how much groceries you buy], don't get those cards they take up space in your wallet, I'm not a fan of Special Sales or Black Fridays. No. No. No thanks. 8. Wine, wine glasses, plates, saucers, mug sets: No. No. And Nope. Unless it's Christmas and I am at home not driving. 9. Impulse buys/ Anniversary/ Birthday Gifts: No. For my mums and dad anniversary, I simply get a table reservation at the restaurant where they love to go; b-day gifts, not anymore since my cousin went King Kong on the present I gave her years ago. No. Obviously, everyone is different but I rather just make memories with my family than give out things they will throw away.
Good Morning! I am with you on everything, but the toaster, books, and car, lol. Yes, we agree on even the Fitbit. But I love my toaster, I NEED to hold and smell (lol) books, and I live out in the boonies, so I need a car. That’s what I love about Minimalism, it’s our own personal journey. See you next week. Stay safe. ❤️ PS. Your makeup looks amazing!
I agree with most of your choices. I too have stopped buying books, for the most part, because it’s hard to get rid of them. It seems that people do not want used books and this was so even before Covid. So I use my digital library. Nice to see someone so young and so thoughtful about these matters.
I was watching this while having tea 💕 And you're not the only one without a Fitbit or this year's phone, I am too... Sometimes I feel like an alien because I work with IT and everyone is so crazy about these things, but I don't see the point in buying new tech stuff every year.
Thanks for sharing and I love that you enjoyed the video with a cup of tea :D And haha yes I can imagine if you work in IT, surrounded by people who love tech gadgets
Agreed! We are not even done with one thing before we are moving onto the next! There is nothing wrong with my phone, but I want the new one. Doesn't make sense.
Junia, dont worry i agree with you, i recently rejected an fit bit on my birthday as i too think i don't require it, i may have sounded rude but i know i won't use it, so thats fine and yes work for an IT company am from india tech crazy country...😁😁👍 dont worry guys there are many like us
I am an engineer and yet I am a minimalist when it comes to technology: no Fitbit, no cable, no smart devices. I prefer silence to beeps, buzzers, and dings!
@Viki Eierdam Goos on you, my first phone was a motorola, they are still exellent and that all you need, i'm not at all materialistic, and quite frankly i don't see the point of all these fancy things, and people who biy the latest thing(what is defined as the latest???) only grumble about the product they have just aquired when they get it home, i've witnessed this on many an occasion and makes me just cringe a little, and all in all, manufactures like to make money it's their aim, it can be just a con, i personally stick to what i have and that keeps me happy, this lady is abs right in her video, i don't wear a watch either, just use my phone and anyway the wearing of a watch irritates my wrist after a while!
A couple of months ago I bought a Fitbit, had it for 1 day and realised that I don't need it and so returned it to the store. I got sucked in with marketing that this was something that would be of great benefit to my life. I work out for an hour every second day doing Pilates and go for a 2 hour walk twice a week. I do not buy most of the things you mentioned.
I see a lot of those videos floating around, but they are all extremely repetetive... Yours is truly fresh! Loved it! I was surprised when you mentioned fitbit - I excercise regulary since forever and never thought about owning one!
I love books. I love the way they look, touching the pages, the scent...but I have been using my e-reader for soooo long that I cannot enjoy paper any longer. My e-reader is lighter, smaller and easier to read in bed. I also love using the dictionary with one tap as I usually read in English and it is not my first language. I love how you can use it anytime anywhere and not worry about it getting stained or dog-eared. Finally, my e-reader has embedded lighting, although it is not the same light as in a phone or an iPad, so it doesn't strain my eyes and allows me to read even when my husband is asleep.
Yes exactly I didn't even think to mention those things :D So many great things about e-readers haha. I also read in English and really enjoy the dictionary feature.
Hi Vera. I haven’t been here for a while and you’ve just come up in my recommendations so I thought I’d pop back for a visit. I’m happy to see that you’re looking so well, a picture of glowing health in fact. This was such a great video and I’ve taken some good ideas from it, so thank you. I’ve been reading some of the comments here and I’m surprised and puzzled by the strength of feeling some people have regarding how much they dislike fitbits! Mine is one of the original ones so it’s several years old and very basic but I wouldn’t be without it. It motivates me to make sure I do my 5(ish) miles a day and prompts me to get up and move every hour. It also rewards me with praise when I “over achieve”, which, when you live alone and don’t have anyone to tell you you’re doing ok is a great plus. I love it! But we’re all different and “one mans meat is another mans poison” as the saying goes. It’s lovely to see you again 😊💛
Hey there, welcome back!! :) Good to see you here again, hope you're doing well. :) Yes I can definitely imagine a fitbit being a great and valuable thing in this way. Like you said, what doesn't work for some may work wonders for others :) Have a great weekend!
I agree about over-dependence on the internet. What happened in China and in Egypt during the 'Arab Spring' woke me up to the fact that one flip of someone else's switch can leave you back in the stone age. So now I keep candles in the house, and have solar-powered lamps and bought a small barbeque... and a water-tank for the yard. I have a solar-powered option for the shower, too - haven't needed to use it yet. I keep real books for the same reason. Now I could live for weeks without electricity or internet if I had too.
Not only do you list the things you don't buy but give really convincing reasons. Most it's that buying these things is a waste of money. I accepted the voluntary simplicity mode of life. It is basically like minimalism except that i believe voluntary simplicity is more encompassing. I have always wondered why people put so many pillows on their beds if they have to get rid of tgem when they go to sleep. I am glad to say that I practice about 90% of what you list. There's room to grow. Thanks fir this video.
Hi Vera I trust God keeping you well. I love all your videos. I started by MINIMALIST yet I didn't know. I started seeing my Mom ALWAYS SHE LOVE DECLUTTERING. SHE ALWATS SAID IF YOU DON'T USE PLS PASS TO THOSE WILL USE. DON'T KEEP JUNK. She always said this. When I was young on my teen's I loved fashion. Incl up to early middle 30's. But, after my mid's 35's I started to slow down. I started to declutter. But, that time I never cut much. I can say I done slowly. But, since around January 2018 I really really DECLUTTER & IM NOW I would say 90% minimalist. I love ❤ my daughter only daughter Aaliyah she is 15 she knows when she doesn't use must clean or wash depend what its. If its clothes must wash fold it nicely and if its something else she must clean pack properly to give to someone but neat clean. Aaliyah she live at hostel. She comes home two weekends a month. Or she home during school holiday. Usually would be for 1 week and dec max 4 weeks. During school holidays she always know she must do DECLUTTER. Aaliyah thank God got into a habit. She is a minimalist and i share with her my knowledge. Aaliyah she is in grade 9 fulltime student and partime she offer Beauty services. She done make up courses, henna tattoo, facials. She go over weekends to client to do they events make up and do apply henna on markets over weekends not all weekends maybe once a month. I love being MINIMALIST I have sooo much time to do what I love. We enjoy each others company at home. Thank God for minimal life I spend the same amount of monthly amount in paying bills since January 2018. I never increases my budget. And we still go on weekends away and I we go holiday in december for 2 weeks myself, my husband, my daughter and my parents. We enjoy going to restaurant once a month and oncs a month to movies. Since I became MINIMALIST I STOPPED BUYING: 1. Magazines 2. Water bottles 3. Flower 4. Cds 5. Movies 6. Cable #7. I changed my internet to cheaper option #8. My old towels i cut them out use them as kitchen cloths #9. When we have our period mestrual i don't waste toilet paper i cut out old newspapers into small pieces and wrap the pad 10. Serviettes can use the washable 11. I try not to buy cleaning prods much i use bicarbonato soda for most things mix with vinegar 12. Conditioner. If i feel i need use coconut oil massage the night before and wash hair the following morning so much better 13. No hair treatment 14. I hardly use medication incl over the counter. Bcs I eat healthy and feeling little sick I do home remedies based on honey and turmeric 15. Softner for clothes better use bicarbonato soda 16. Newspaper 17. Recipe books 18. Alarm clock 19. Cut out email subscriptions 20. I exercise at home. I cancel gym membership 21. I am not vegan but I try eat meat maybe only once a week or once in 10 days bcs its not healthy to eat so much meat so often and its expensive. I eat a lot lentils plant base protein seeds nuts 22. I only have 2 winter pijamas and 2 summer and 2 special traditional event clothes Im muslim for our religious gathering if I must attend. And 2 special events clothes. Although same as you I hardly attend weddings, bdays, engagements I dont rem when last I attended one 23. Fridge magnets when going away I stopped buying any sevoniour. I have pics to keep its enough 24. When I go on holiday I go to enjoy the place not to shop. I hardly buy anything and bring home. What I want to bring home its MEMORIES OF THE TRIP NOT MORE STUFF 25. No beauty salon. Once a week I use wax and I do it my self. I apply mask myself. I cut my nails file and i use henna I do it myself. My daughter do facial for me when she is home and she do manicure and pedicure. I love experiment new foods drinks so I save to travel and enjoy different culture, race, religion. Not to argue fight. But, rather to learn RESPECT EACH OTHER. Im TOUR GUIDE and I love ❤ my job its such a pleasure. The last 3 years. Unfortunately, now I haven't been working. I used to be and work as Accountant. Although I used to earn so much more. But, I love being TOUR GUIDE I really love ❤. It is so exciting every client its different. Different race religion needs of tge client also different. I also have ladied come here to Johannesburg from near Africa countries to do pregnancy treatments they wany kids so I translate because I do speak read write Portuguese. I love ❤ Travel Food Sleep/ Rest 😅🤣😍🤩 If I had one of those van bus that its like a house and travel the all of 🇿🇦 I would. Today just now I seen a video a guy build a float house by the sea wow. I love ❤ your channel and I love everything about it. I love the fact you so natural. And so yourself simple. You not old granny or old fashion. Be who you are and some of us who are also real will love you and your channel. Stay safe Stay blessed Love from Johannesburg South Africa ❤🇿🇦 Shehnaz Ahmad
I have come to the same conclusion about many of these same things. I don't feel old - I just feel like I'm not gullible, always being sucked into what's new on the market. I think you're very wise in your decisions and I enjoy your way of thinking. Don't doubt yourself or put yourself down. Having an excess of stuff is such a waste of time and money.
I agree with almost all these. One thing I rarely see people saying they don’t buy or use is iron and ironing board. I have not used either for 30 years, and I work as a professional. You can use wrinkle free or low wrinkle clothes. And I dry everything on a line in the sun, or inside if it’s wet
You have a lovely energy about you and I enjoy watching you and getting ideas. I'm so glad that you are a beautiful vegan girl as well. It's so easy to choose kind and cruelty free. I sleep a whole lot better living without inflicting atrocities. Thanks for your videos 😃
Bravo on the phone..I also pay about 8 dollars a month, have had the same phone for 7 years and it works just fine! I can't be described as a minimalist, but I do eliminate extraneous crap whenever possible!
I'm not a minimalist so I was surprised that I agreed with 90% of what you said. I do not own a Fitbit either and I never ever buy beauty products that have been tested on animals. I love my toaster and my books 😁
This made me feel good because many of the things that she doesn’t do anymore, I never did them - ha. This is a good reminder video. I enjoy your delivery, to the point. Thanks for sharing.
I own a miband (other brand than the Fitbit) and it helps me get motivated to take 10000 steps each day. But I understand if you don't want to have one. I have almost stoped buying new clothes and just shop at secondhand stores (except underwear). Living in a tiny house with the idea in mind to be able to run the house of solar (we aren't there yet though) we got rid of almost all electric appliances for the kitchen, we just have a handmixer and it works fine. Makeup - I stoped wearing it 7 years ago? Same with shaving just stoped, I don't want the hassle and don't want to buy into that all women should shave. We do own 2,5 cars (my partners big hobby is to renovate an old Austin mini (car)) Owning a car is one of the guilty treats that I give myself, I like the freedom of taking the car to work when I am ready in the morning and don't stress to a bus. Keep the good job up! Thank you for your video 🙏
I do not own a TV set. I got rid of TV over 10 years ago, it was the best thing I ever did. Not only do I have more space now, but I also have a lot more time. I don't own a car either. I'm lucky to live near a railway station and we have great cycle paths all around the city where I live. I bought myself a new bicycle recently and I love it !
I didnt own a toaster for years. My oldest son is 8. And asked for one for Christmas last year. Lol. I was hesitant as they really just take up so much space. But he uses it every single day. Sometimes multiple times a day. And now his younger brother is too. And really bow and again toast with my coffee isnt bad lol. We dont own a microwave though. Which really gets people.
@@justadudeintheworldman.120 Ive only had one microwave in my adult life. It was gifted to us when our friends bought an even bigger one. It took up almost 2ft of my counter. And it was still hardly used. It died after about 6 months. Thats was almost 10years ago. I get asked all the time how i cook blank for my kids... When i say on the stove or in the oven its like their brains explode. My MIL is notorious for using hers. Shed get so mad the kids wouldn't eat at her place. Then i found out she even uses it on stuff like scrambled eggs and mac n cheese. I was pretty happy when my oldest said when she uses it to cook hed rather to just wait until he gets home to eat. Lol.
@@dialishious93 That’s the craziest part is when you tell them I use the oven/stove in place of microwave, lol they just give a blank stare. I’ve haven’t felt deprived without a microwave one bit. The only time I thought about it was when I was wanting popcorn but even that you can get stovetop or ready in bag now. No microwave ftw!!!
@@justadudeintheworldman.120 weve contemplated one for the same reason. But my husband loves picking out a new kind of popcorn and topping with the kids and then them watch while he cooks. We make our own bread and butter though. So i guess we just dont mind if things take a few steps to reach the final end. Most microwaved food ove had didnt taste the best anyways.
Ensure that they unplug if they try to stick a fork to loosen bread. This happen to me when I was fortunate to be in the kitchen while my daughter was using the toaster. I had to scold her to never ever use a metal item are anything else to loosened food. And definitely without unplugging electrical toaster.☑️
For me, you are like an island of minimalism))) everything around me, like online-shops, youtube shorts, stylish trends, interior design trends just yelling "buy more"! And you are the one who talk me - you don't have to buy all this stuff, and you will be ok) I really like to watch your videos, it's about self-care process for me. Thank you! And sorry for my mistakes in English)
Really enjoyed your vid, mostly because you and I think so much alike and share the same lifestyle values. My sister was given a fitbit and she offered it to me because she didn't want it. I declined her offer. I have a nice little TImex that I have loved for years and wear it when I go out and want to keep track of time. I have a high end bathrobe (a beloved gift) and an economical car (so I could pay cash). Skincare is one product for everything - a salve made by the folks at the "Homeless Garden Products" in Santa Cruz, CA. Mostly organic beeswax, almond oil, olive oil and essential oils. I stopped buying new clothes a few years ago. My black leggings (long or capri length) and the shirts I already have take me almost everywhere I want to go. Loved the lifestyle affirmation!
#42 and #43...impulse buys and sales! It's true...if I wait it out for a couple of days, I go back to look at the items (online) and find that I don't really love them or need them. But when I do love them still, I make the decision without regret to make the purchase. Patience is not one of my natural virtues, but it literally pays off.
Hi Vera, don't own a fitbit at all; i am not into tech stuff and i am also a minimalist,. You are definitely not alone in that . Love your videos. Thank you
I am 100% with you about the electronics. I don't want a fitbit or a meal subscription plan. I only subscribe to 25 TH-cam channels and I am very choosy about those. I keep maybe ten books that I read and re-read, all others I read on Kindle. I don't want the latest phones or gadgets. I feel happier keeping things more simple.
Oh god I’m 21 and I didn’t even know smart lighting was a thing haha. The more I go into intentional minimalism, I don’t own a toaster or uncomfortable shoes or a fit bit or anything like that haha:)
Although I am completely in love with the magic of physical books, I have to say my e-reader is hands down the best purchase decision I have made- probably in my entire life ever. It will never be the same as physically feeling a page, but I find myself reading more and longer and denser books than I ever have previously. I think approaching novel technologies such as ebooks as well as audiobooks makes reading much more accessible to those who have a limited ability to do so! Beautiful video as always- the cinematographic quality of your videos has improved I see! You outdid yourself again, Vera : D I am happy to look up to someone who shares a message of love like you do!
I don’t have or purchase anything with ‘smart’ in front of it; I’ve never met a person with a Fitbit who looks fit; I was delighted when my ancient toaster wouldn’t work - I could take it to the tip! However, I ‘mended’ it with a new fuse - and it’s still going strong 😬.
oh haircuts is a big one! My partenr does his own and I used to do mine but I'm finding it more difficult now its getting longer but I go to the hairdresser about once a year instead of regularly =)
I don't do cell phones. But I love my books. I have gone through my books and give away to charity shops every few years. I separate what would be a monster book shelf into small shelves in every room. I'm always decluttering. it is a joyous struggle. I stopped buying clothes unless I go on holiday, every other year. Looking forward to your jewelry video.
We love u Vera! Thank u for all your knowledge and passion. Because of u, I have turned my life around and found my better half and I know what I want to come in my life and remove. Thank u for everything.
Wow that's amazing!! Thanks so much and you definitely also have yourself to thank and be proud of for making changes and turning your life around :) Way to go!!!!
Because home decor is a major interest of mine, I have given some thought about balancing intentional and at least somewhat minimalist living with this. I do have decor items in my home and I use the principle of “collating” to avoid clutter and visual numbing. Because I only have things I love, I actually never get tired of seeing these. Some I like for their beauty and some for their quirky or amusing qualities. I also avoid having a cluttered environment and enjoy the negative spaces as much as the decorated areas/surfaces. “Collating” works for me in many other areas as well. Thanks for another thought-provoking video.
For almost all of those 50 things, I am the same as you Vera. Definitely no smart lighting or technology in our house. To me it just makes people lazier and to be honest the amount of tech nowadays is useful in many ways yes but also makes me feel a lot more stressed and I do feel it has a negative impact on our mental and physical health. I too have an older phone, it works ok so why change it? No interest in Fitbit .... I think I can work out how to stay fit and healthy without one! 😄. I love your attitude to life and as someone else has said, not older than your years, just wiser 😉🤗 x
Same here, no fit bit, old Samsung phone, no tablet(only a computer that is running on last leg), no TV in any rooms, no smart tech stuff around the house. I love it, live simple like in the 90s. Oh and my kiddos do not own any video games or phones. We love outdoor and family times plus vacation twice a month for some extra family bonding time.
I'm with you about the loyalty cards. I don't like giving out my personal info either and I don't spend that much money for the cards to be viable for me. So I avoid them. Although I do get weird looks at the checkout when I say I don't have one.
We have this place called Sam’s Club where I live, kinda same as Costco. Pisses me straight off every time I have to show my card to get gas, or even enter into the building that I pay an annual membership fee for. Argh!
I don't like wearing something on my wrist day and night either but I do own a Fitbit. I just couldn't improve what isn't measured, realizing how much more I need to move or how much more water I need to drink, helped me improve.
I personally own a fitbit only because I have to watch my heart rate, its a bare bones fitbit, and I will say it is annoying trying to sleep with it on. I also recently went through my jewelry, and only kept the stuff I actually wear or are special in some way. I am slowly paring down on stuff. I have accumulated quite a bit in my tiny 1 bdrm in the last 5 years
Glad you posted all this. I am learning. Yes, I can do fine without a Toaster, and side-tables. Questions: 1. Do you own a TV? I suppose people can now watch movies on their phone or tablet, but personally, I like to watch on a nice 55in. Flat-screen TV. 2. You don't have a car. This does save money, but ---don't you ever feel "confined" to your town? How far away is the Ocean? How expensive is a "one-hour-away" TRAIN-trip, just to "get away" for awhile? How much is a 1-month Bus pass? If you use public transportation/BUS, is it frustrating with the many stops they make and how long it may take to get to the destination *you* want? If you go to the Mall, or the Grocery store and buy, say, 3 sacks of groceries or whatever, is it hard to pack/carry and get them back to your house? 3. Do you have any sort of "fairly large" living-room Stereo system? These days we can listen to music on phone apps or a tablet but it just doesnt compare to the sheer tonal rich quality of having a stereo receiver and a graphic equalizer (to tweak/customize sound) and some floor-standing speakers. To listen to some very mellow piano or saxophone jazz this way is very soothing. Your videos are quite useful. Thanks!---from the USA (pacific ocean side)
Part of the stress that's plagued my entire life was always needing to have the latest and greatest.. not because of style, superficiality or envy of others things, but to me I needed to feel "on top of it" if that makes sense. The worst part of all that? I am a minimalist at heart and never realized it til the last year. Massive overhaul (and a dozen Goodwill trips) changed my life! It took a year to really really get in the nook and cranny of it all. It's been such a dramatic change that some have said I am an entirely different person 😂 Out of everything though, I will not give up my designer handbags. I'm not a trendsetter or anything like that, it's something that my ma and grandma have been fond of and we appreciate the value, history and craftsmanship. Plus, my vinyls! ❤️❤️
I've gotten rid of any personal or household items that are "high maintenence". Clothing that requires dry cleaning after one or two wears, things that use up batteries frequently, dishes that are hand wash only etc. I also have gotten rid of specialized cleaning or harsh chemical products. And I don't miss any of the items above!
Very admiring video! My first item was the television, everything else from then on was simple to give away. I don't have kids so I use a dorm size refrigerator which saves so much, living in the city I don't need a lot in my fridge
Great point with the „point cards“! I also decline every offer. I just don‘t like that I have to give my personal information AND in addition they monitor every little item I buy in their stores.
Hi Vera, hope you are well. No matter how fat I get, a scarf will always fit! Just as you said ' scarves', I was looking in amazement at my huge box of scarves. I went through a pretty bad scarf addiction a few years ago! But I only have one neck, how many scarves can I wear?! I am currently doing a paper declutter and using you as my inspiration, so thanks! Have a great day! x
Thanks for watching, liking and subscribing! 🤗🌿 Which things do you no longer buy??
Simple Happy Zen the biggest change was no longer buying books. I get them from the library or online. I used to have a ridiculous amount of books!
I no longer buy anything cuz I'm in the first period of minimalism (I started in the 25/01/2020) so I decided to stop buying for a year until I recognize my needs and declutter all the things I don't like/use
Good luck with the no-buy year Maroua Raiss!
I got one awesome link
th-cam.com/video/g2aQ2e0ch8k/w-d-xo.html
must check.
😭😭😭
Thank you, Barbara. Your comment helped more than you'll ever know..
Fat Omnivore 👍 here too.
True. Agree with you totally
@@dr.braxygilkeycruises1460 I agree. My sons now work from home. They all say they are getting more work done. Saving on clothes and transport.
I stop buying other people's opinions about me
👍👍👍
Good one 👍
Period sid
*sis lmao
I love how accepting you are if people have a different opinion. So refreshing!
Thank you Miranda! :) I think it's important to realize that what works for me, might be different for someone else. And I don't have any illusions that I have everything figured out haha.
Another great alternative to buying books is using the library :)
Yes! :)
YYYEEEESSSS!!! Libraries are just amazing
Mildred Lake yes! Some publishers are limiting their books to libraries in the US. 🤔
Yes! If you are very much into reading you could also get a kindle
Thank you so much Jess, that's great to hear :)
I have a storage box, and if it doesn't make the cut to get into the box, it goes.
@Tussinussi " being aware of" that is so true👍
This is so refreshing! So often TH-cam videos are FULL of things to buy! I love hearing how you’ve simplified your life. Inspiring ❤️
From you I see that at the heart of minimalism can be a beautiful sense of self - of freely admitting what you like & don’t like with no apologies - and then giving yourself the permission to live that way - no need to ask anyone else.
When you go the process of decluttering you’ll realize what you CAN really live without. Thanks for opening our eyes to what is important.
So very sorry for your loss. I’m glad you decided to live again. Enjoy the rest of your life. ❤️
@@terrystarnes4413 Thank you for your kind words! 💝
Blessings for your journey.
Yes it certainly makes you look at money and spending differently 🤔🤔
I agree Cheryl. I do feel people are really re-evaluated and re-adjusting their priorities.
I totally agree! I am relooking at my spending habits because I have been able to go without for so long. I am sure I can keep going without.
so true!
Totally agree!! Virus and lockdown has opened our eyes in so many ways. Focus more on the truly important things in life.
I use my toaster oven all the time too. I live alone and it just seems silly and a waste to use that great big oven for 1 piece of chicken
Toaster OVENS are amazing. I use it all the time too.
I Bought A Toaster Oven A Few Yrs Ago When My Oven Stopped Working.. I Couldn't Afford To Fix Or Replace It At The Time.. My Burners Worked Just Fine..
Mostly Bought One That Could Fix A Pizza!. 😂
But I Used It For So Much More!.
In The Heat Of The Summer I Didn't Need To Heat Up My Kitchen With The Oven!. Barbecue Outside Works Too!. 👍
We have a toaster oven and rarely use the big oven. Honestly we could get by without the oven if we had to b/c of the toaster oven.
"if you don't need it you're not saving anything" the best phrase in your video - THANK YOU!
I don't own a Fitbit, but my mom can't live without it 😄
I think I could get rid of almost everything from this list except books, my car (not so good public transportation here...) and holiday decorations 😍 That makes me sooo happy every year! I rarely buy something new, but I could never trash anything I currently own.
Thank you Vera for opening my eyes for some of these stuff :)
My souvenirs are tiny charms I add to a necklace: I stopped buying tea towels, coffee mugs, tee shirts and such.
I buy refrigerator magnets. Small and each one is unique to the area I visited
Good idea👌
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts Charise and for your kind words :)
Great tip! :)
I am already practicing this..cheers
hmm interesting and good point on fitting them in the washing machine! I take a small towel when traveling but love being wrapped in a big towel after a shower or bath.
I recently upgraded from a Fitbit to an Apple Watch, after thinking about it for literal years. It makes my life a lot better (it helps me to work out, meditate, and get better sleep).
I mostly use my smart watch for tracking my sleep. I also used the app for tracking caffeine but that seem sto be gone as an option now.
I don't even wear a watch, my phone tells me the time
Same. After my last watch broke I decided that was it
Actually it is important to have a watch because of phone addiction .... I n going to buy a watch
I kinda want a watch. But only a normal watch not a tech one
Lovely!! Thank you so much for your comment :) Love your favorite items! Also, I do live in the Netherlands, but not in Amsterdam :)
❤
You are not the only one who doesn’t own a Fitbit and thinks it’s a waste of time haha I also think the same for Apple Watches lol
Phew! I always thought I was the odd one out who doesn’t feel the need to have one.
The tv. I've had for 20 years works fine and no one can tailor ads to my data.
lol same. never have had a desire for one
Lovely!! :)
I feel the same. I love home made pottery
I do that too! It’s really lovely every time you use it, it brings back memories of your trip!
I appreciate how you recognize that some of these things can be necessary for other people, like the dryer for large families!
That's amazing! I think it's awesome you made such changes. And of course thanks for being vegan too 🤗🌾🍵
Simplicity is the way to go! I lived in that “Old Fashion Time”! I go back in time and go ... it is so peaceful and quiet!
I realize some things we need ... but a lot we do not!
Thanks for sharing and keep on doing it “ Your Way!”!🌹
I really agree with u
As I watch this, my mom exploded our toaster not even an hour ago 😂. I told her we didn't really need it anyway and we shouldn't buy another.
Hahahaha
Haha death to all toasters!
🤣🤣🤣 RIP toaster
Perhaps you are not sounding "old" just wise.
Haha thanks Peggy! 🤗🌾🌱 I sometimes feel like I don't understand 'the youths' anymore haha.
I second that!
Agreed
That's how old people got old - by being wise.
2. New way of transport: bicycle (summer/spring/ fall) Taxi or bus (winter)
I am so sorry that your cousin misbehaved. Some people are really gift people, and some of those expect others to read their minds.
I enjoyed the video and agreed with the majority of what was said as well. ❤️
Thank you Corinna! 🤗🌷 And you're definitely right about minimalism :)
I love the smell when reading a good book something about it 😍
I agree with most of your choices. I too have stopped buying books, for the most part, because it’s hard to get rid of them. It seems that people do not want used books and this was so even before Covid. So I use my digital library. Nice to see someone so young and so thoughtful about these matters.
43. SALES: If you don't need it, you're not saving anything! Thank you, this one personally touched me a lot ❤
Our planet is suffering and Americans especially are in a frenzy of consumerism. This video (you!) are so thoughtful, intelligent and inspiring.
I always love to see Ganesha Ji at your decor and thanks for the wonderful video 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 love from India 🇮🇳
Your skincare routine is exactly what you need. Glad you don’t waste your time with extras!
So happy you enjoyed the video! :) I always try to make them differently from the others out there.
What I dislike about so many of the new (it ) gadgets is that the info they record is not private.
You are my kind of girl, no toaster/Fitbit or Christmas decorations for me. I’m free!!
Hi Vera
I trust God keeping you well.
Since I became MINIMALIST I STOPPED BUYING:
1. Magazines
2. Water bottles
3. Flower
4. Cds
5. Movies
6. Cable
#7. I changed my internet to cheaper option
#8. My old towels i cut them out use them as kitchen cloths
#9. When we have our period mestrual i don't waste toilet paper i cut out old newspapers into small pieces and wrap the pad
10. Serviettes can use the washable
11. I try not to buy cleaning prods much i use bicarbonato soda for most things mix with vinegar
12. Conditioner. If i feel i need use coconut oil massage the night before and wash hair the following morning so much better
13. No hair treatment
14. I hardly use medication incl over the counter. Bcs I eat healthy and feeling little sick I do home remedies based on honey and turmeric
15. Softner for clothes better use bicarbonato soda
16. Newspaper
17. Recipe books
18. Alarm clock
19. Cut out email subscriptions
20. I exercise at home. I cancel gym membership
21. I am not vegan but I try eat meat maybe only once a week or once in 10 days bcs its not healthy to eat so much meat so often and its expensive. I eat a lot lentils plant base protein seeds nuts
22. I only have 2 winter pijamas and 2 summer and 2 special traditional event clothes Im muslim for our religious gathering if I must attend. And 2 special events clothes. Although same as you I hardly attend weddings, bdays, engagements I dont rem when last I attended one
23. Fridge magnets when going away I stopped buying any sevoniour. I have pics to keep its enough
24. When I go on holiday I go to enjoy the place not to shop. I hardly buy anything and bring home. What I want to bring home its MEMORIES OF THE TRIP NOT MORE STUFF

I don't even know what a Fitbit is!!
Sorry. I will always have my iron and board. No dryer though.
Plus a hand held steamer works wonderfully !
I agree with most of your suggestions, except giving up the toaster because we use it every single day.
You have a lovely energy about you and I enjoy watching you and getting ideas. I'm so glad that you are a beautiful vegan girl as well. It's so easy to choose kind and cruelty free. I sleep a whole lot better living without inflicting atrocities. Thanks for your videos 😃
🤗🌾💕
Even if you do own a dryer, what is the point of dryer sheets?
No to Fitbits.
I also don't own a Toaster and I am happy you mentioned that you don't own one :D I make them in the oven if necessary.
Yes it works really well :) You can also make them in a pan
Bravo on the phone..I also pay about 8 dollars a month, have had the same phone for 7 years and it works just fine! I can't be described as a minimalist, but I do eliminate extraneous crap whenever possible!
I'm not a minimalist so I was surprised that I agreed with 90% of what you said. I do not own a Fitbit either and I never ever buy beauty products that have been tested on animals. I love my toaster and my books 😁
Thanks for sharing Francine!! :) Are you sure you're not a minimalist? ;)
@@SimpleHappyZen Haha maybe! I do really love a layered look in a home but that can become cluttered if not careful so you keep me on track!
I love my stuff, I clean my stuff, I use my stuff. When I stop loving something I donate or give it away so someone else can love it. Works for me.
Lol, I haven’t owned a microwave for 5+ years. I get the weirdest looks when that makes it into a convo somehow lol
And you are the one who talk me - you don't have to buy all this stuff, and you will be ok)
I really like to watch your videos, it's about self-care process for me. Thank you! And sorry for my mistakes in English)
Aw thank you for your kind comment! Wishing you a lovely Sunday
I feel so much more normal after watching your video. Love it. Thank you for sharing.
I never have wanted a fitbit, they just don’t serve a good enough purpose for me to pay for it and wear it on my wrist everyday.
Aw, thank you Haley for your kind words!!! And I completely agree about the e-reader :)
I agree about the fit bit. It’s just one more thing to loose, break,or remember to recharge.
I don’t buy makeup, jewelry, haircuts, movie tickets, streaming services, alcohol, or vices. So much $ and time for vacations & helping out others!
oh haircuts is a big one! My partenr does his own and I used to do mine but I'm finding it more difficult now its getting longer but I go to the hairdresser about once a year instead of regularly =)
Wonderful. However, I do splurge on a couple of the items that you do not subscribe to, however, I get your point..
I stopped going to stores at all because I’m sure there’s something I like so avoiding temptation is big for me.
same here !!! I always buy things I don’t need everytime I go to Walmart without a shopping list 📋
I ask my son to do the grocery shopping because he doesn't buy anything that is not on the list.
I’ve always been a planner, reader and writer and I switched to an iPad and it’s amazing
Thanks so much Jacqui and have a great day!!!
Questions:
Clothing that requires dry cleaning after one or two wears, things that use up batteries frequently, dishes that are hand
wash only etc. I also have gotten rid of specialized cleaning or harsh chemical products. And I don't miss any of the items above!
I love it! :)
Have a great day! x
Haha thanks for sharing and I'm so glad to hear it, good luck with the paper declutter!!
