I lean a little more toward the Gerber Multitools mainly because it seems that the included tools are a little stronger in many areas and most models are designed so that when the pliers head is open and in use, the handle solid and rounded as opposed to the Leatherman's open tool storage area that just gives you two edges that make it uncomfortable to really grip the pliers hard.

@@kalebmulisha6313 they'll replace it once for free with great customer service, you pay for shipping, I learned the tools limits at that point and haven't broken a Leatherman since, they'll repair or entirely replace with a newer model if broken irreparable and discontinued, because the key point is they don't ask for your original ownership of it, they don't question that, so they must keep track of return customers who repeatedly have broken, because someone could theoretically buy a used one on eBay and repair then resell it, even though they'd make more through ATF auctions, the warranty is not there for you all to abuse your tools, it's in the knowledge you'll be able to pass down something that still works, and can even be sent in for a tune up, it's the safety of a good investment, plus it keeps American jobs and the appeal factor, to break the plierhead once and have it replaced for free instead of the tool being useless and could be filled in by a SAK without the pliers in the EDC role, I'm sure they also keep track of if it's the same tool needing repair, because their first repair their willing to lose money on, and if by questions you mean the 180 character limit text you need to write to explain the issue to them

I have both as well. The Gerber's outboard tools are a winner for me... just a better design. My Wingman pliers sometimes get hung up on the frame while closing the tool. Can be difficult to free it and that's annoying as hell. Also, the tools are difficult to swing open. The Gerber isn't quite as aesthetically pleasing to me as the Wingman, but it wins in every other way.

I have a wingman and the older suspension. I find myself using the suspension far more often. I like the main blade for scribing lines when woodworking because of the straight edged blade. Gerber less expensive yes but if it uses the same Chinese Steel 3CR...) as in the Grtber Dime, I will take the Wingman and it’s 420HC steel. I also have a Gerber Truss and tools are hard to extend. I don’t like the look of the NXT because I feel that dropping it in the mud will lead to a lot of cleaning unlike on the Wingman. I was having same type arguement with myself re Wingman vs Sidekick but ignored the Gerber due to my experiences with tool extension on the Truss. The Package Tool on the Wingman won me over because I get a lot of the plastic nightmare packages and seeing how easily that tool opens packages sold me on Wingman over the Sidekick.

I got my first PST while in the Army. I thought they almost perfected that model with the Blast, whose major advantage was adding the locking tools. Then they discontinued it and now have the Bond which, again, does NOT have locking blades, but at least it costs $20 more than the PST used to (the heritage edition of the PST costs $70 more than the original). And since it doesn't come with the clip - which will run an extra $10-$15 - the Bond then basically competes with the tools it was created to replace at the "lower" $60 price point when manufacturing costs increased.
I love the Leathermans that I've owned, but that company consistently seems to have squirrels running around, making decisions.

  • @danwoodson2384

A difference between the two is in the ease of getting in-and-out of your pocket. The Leatherman is more rounded and smooth on the outside; the Gerber has sharper edges and protrusions which can hang up on clothing. Since I am always taking mine in-and-out of my pocket, the Leatherman is the clear choice for me for this reason!

The issues with the Gerber are as follows:
Bead blasted finish that rusts in humid tropical environments.
Tools that are not made in USA, meaning they are willing to snap due to poor Chinese heat treatments.
Leathermen wins again to no surprise

Nice comparison 👏 my daughter just bought me the Gerber Suspension NXT to add to my collection. I love multitools, so I have a couple 😁 I work as an aircraft mechanic and my EDC at work is a Gerber Center drive and a Victorinox Tinker but even though the Center drive is awesome it's a bit bulky for just kicking around the house on the weekends. So I'm hoping the NXT will fill that void. I have a Wingman I've had for years and it's great but aside from the blade, scissors and pliers I think it's kinda limited especially when it comes to it's drivers plus it's slightly heavier. It's served me well for years don't get me wrong and Leatherman always makes a good product. But it is what it is. Also I like my drivers to lock. If I'm putting pressure on a screw I don't want to be concerned about it folding over on me. So we'll see 👀 but I like it so far. It's lightweight, tools lock and it's easily pocketable with the clip. I can just grab it off the counter slip it in my pocket and go. Thhanks for the review, looking forward to more.

Suspension NXT is a piece of shit. You have so many sharp edge. You cannot avoid chaffing you hand all to hell. Plus they never use spring open pliers which sucks balls trying to get it open in tight spots.

Two years later, the Suspension is a mistake. I just bought one, and I will be returning it tomorrow because it is virtually impossible to pry out the inner tools. The knife, the Philips head driver and the scissors come out easily enough but you're going to need another tool to pry out the other blades and, when you get them out, some of them are useless. The awl is too wide to be an awl and doesn't have a thread loop so it isn't really an awl at all. The file blade doesn't have enough bite to take down a hangnail, let alone a nail, and the "ruler" is a joke. I don't know what you can measure with that tiny little ruler. Using your thumb will be just about as accurate and much more convenient. The fit and finish? The version I bought at Home Depot was made in China, according to the packaging, but there is nothing on the tool itself to indicate the country of origin. The tool doesn't align properly in the closed position.
I've been carrying Leatherman tools since 1983. When it comes to a tool that you are going to rely upon for the rest of your life, price is not the most important criteria. Performance is.
I never touched a Wingman, so I really can't compare the Wingman to the Suspension, but on its own merits, the Suspension should be left that way, hanging suspended from a rack in the store.

    • @AJHart-eg1ys
      @AJHart-eg1ys 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I got my PST in roughly 1990, and when that disappeared years later I got the Blast, which is thicker but I thought was almost a perfected version of the PST since it finally had locking blades. So, Leatherman being Leatherman, they promptly discontinued it and now that price point has the Bond which, again, doe NOT have locking blades. It also doesn't come with the clip, so for the added cost of ordering that (If you want. i'm a sheath guy) the price gets kicked up to the same - if not more - than the tools it was meant to replace at the lower price point. 🤣
I love Leatherman, but it seems like only every 10th idea they have actually improves anything.
      Take care.

Given the choice, while the Suspension looked more appealing, I much preferred the Sidekick. Well, I've misplaced it again, hoping I might still find it, I went back to the Suspension for a few weeks. Then I decided to try out an Ozark Trail Multiforce, which I'm growing to love. The Multiforce is an 1/8" thicker and heavier but, unlike the Suspension, forcibly using the pliers is not painful or awkward. In many ways, I'm liking it even better than the Sidekick.

The Gerber isn't a deep carry. It rides the same depth as the wingman. The NXT is just longer. Deep carry means that the tool is almost completely hidden inside the pocket......below the mounting screws of the clip itself. Good review though.....I have the wingman but I think I'll go out and get one of these Gerber's too.....I'm just a MT collecting idiot....love them.

Both are excellent tools. The outboard tools on the NXT are a winner. But the tool is much larger than it needs to be, making it uncomfortable to use. The knives on both are similar, but the Wingman's knife is a winner, due to it's length and ease of deployment (but I also carry a knife. Problem solved.)
They're both very good. I use both. But the tool that seems to make it on my hip the most is the MP400 Compact Sport. I can scavenge for something to make an awl, I never need a ruler, and the MP is much more rugged.
I can't disrespect any of these, though.

I have a Gerber Truss and due to it being stiff and. practically tearing my fingers off unlocking tools to put them away, I ordered a Wingman as a replacement. I have a Squirt PS4, as a keychain tool and the Wingman for home and possible EDC though undecided.

My wingman has finally given up. Broke blade, broke medium flathead, and a grove in the wire cutter. I bought this Gerber on Amazon before I saw this video and think I may have made a good purchase.

I have both as well. My opinion get the leatherman. Better scissor, locking mechanism, lot smaller, easier to flip internal tools out (Gerber hurts), overall better quality. And way better warranty--lifetime. Leatherman you can even send it in because your blade becomes dull from normal use.

Price alone gives the Gerber a headstart that Leatherman then has to overcome. The Suspension comes in at $39 today. The Wingman is $70. To be honest, the main thing holding m e back from switching are the aesthetics and the feeling that, since I started using my PST in the Army, then got them as gifts for my father and brother, that we're kind of a "Leatherman family," plus there are so many garbage products out there that it's difficult to know who to trust.

Have the gerber suspension,, after all these years it's still holding up good,, and my Winchester one from Walmart with the xtra bits is holding up equally well too,, my next trip to Walmart im gettn the $4.50 cent Hart tool multi plier to test.

The quality of the gerber is abysmal. the grinds are awful, blades are dull. I miss my old wingman.

Bought a Gerber years ago. Bought a Leatherman and never looked back. I don't care for the cheap feel of Gerber. Feels like a toy versus a tool.

I decided to buy the Gerber Suspension NXT because of the tools I use most which is the screwdrivers, and pliers and they look better too. I already had the Center Drive and love it most of all due to it's screwdriver length, and the pliers on it.

Yes, i tested a Gerber MP600 Multi-Plier cutting quartz stones with the cutting part of the plier, then i cut very tiny copper wire easily, . Gerber steel is harder, Leatherman steel bends. Gerber steel breaks, but aplying exesive force.

I've had both and the Gerber is cheaper cause it does not last as long. My Gerber lasted 2 years before it became loose and overall less reliable. My leatherman has lasted 5 years and still feel tight and strong.

Ah darn, I bought it a week before i saw this vid. Could've used the Amazon link.
Gotta agree with you on the NXT. Excellent lightweight tool but best carried in a pouch (Maxpedition entity pouch in my case) but the Wingman has a far better pocket clip and clip position.

I bought a Wingman and a Sidekick years back at a Home Depot sale price of $19.98 at a time when the MSRP for the entry-level models was $29.98. Quite the deal then. But I wouldn't lay down the dollars they're demanding today. I've since picked up the NXT and find it out preforms the similarly-stacked Leathermans at every turn.

maglites are overpriced as well. A mini maglite on Amazon is $32 for a 100 lumen light. I just bought a streamlight on Amazon, also 100 lumens and a better design for $20

Excellent comparison, sir! I too, have several other multi-tools, including the Leatherman Wave. I agree that the clip on the Gerber is nice, and it's one of the few designs that make it easy to detach/attach to the pocket one-handed. I also like the solid locking mechanism of the Gerber. Thanks again for the great review!

One thing thats nice about the wingman is the retail package opener and if you do use scissors (alot of people do not care) they are bigger. I own a few Leathermans and Gerbers. My favorite is the Center drive...

While I can see the advantages of the Suspension, I still prefer the Wingman. Got one for my ladyfriend for her work as a caregiver in a nursing home, and she has never looked back. Easier and more comfortable in pocket, and does everything that she needs it to do as far as slicing through any type of belt or restraint in an emergency, and the scissors, she tells me, are great for when using first aid or medical supplies. For her situation, I'll still choose the Wingman. But as the saying goes, your mileage may vary. Good vid.
