Mainly a Gerber guy, but have some SOG’s, too. I think I’ve owned 1 leatherman. What one of them needs to do is offer a build your own, so you can select the tools you want most.
For me it's always Victorinox >> Leatherman >>> SOG > Gerber, not only in pliers but in all sorts of multitools. All three of the last brands have fine innovations and interesting ideas compared to the relatively basic Victorinox features, but none can compete in terms of finish, fit, rust resistance, robustness and overall usability. Victorinox set standards twenty years ago and even when it doesn't seem to lead in this niche of the multitool world, it remains a very strong competitor. All that said i'm a strong advocate of pairing a Victorinox swiss army knife of any model with a dedicated set of pliers, like these small Knipex. I think it's better to have functions separate from the gripping tool itself, but that's me.
I had the SwissTool X, but not the Spirit. It's a beast of a tool, bulky and solid yet very well-finished. The Spirit as I under is more compact and lighter.
10 years in the US Navy. Attached to 3 ships. Multiple deployments. Leatherman was the only multi-tool sold in the ships stores. NEVER went anywhere when we were haze grey and underway without my Leatherman on my hip. Used it probably hourly for different tasks. Bought it in 1991. I still use it to this day. My brother was US Army and a Gerber guy. But for my money the Leatherman is....well.. THE Man!
i got my Gerber Needlenose Multi-Plier 600 Basic in 1998, it just came out. and i still have the same one, has been on my belt ever sins. Gerber warranty is excellent. had the needle nose replact and the blade, free of charge in 2019. and they gave me a new pouch as well. i am a farmer need the tool every day, and hard use at that. love the tool.
When you buy the SOG, also buy the leatherman ratcheting bit driver. It fit's in there and then you have a ratchet screwdriver for 1/4" bits. In fact, knifecenter, if you read it, recommend it to people that want to buy the power access or the power pint. It's an epic combination.
Victorinox is the above and beyond the best quality, but you will pay a hefty price for it. But hey, buy once, cry once. I got a Spirit MX and I'll never need another multi-tool. It will outlive me.
I have a Leatherman Wave+ that usually stays in my home and a Skeletool CX for EDC since it is very slim, lightweight, has a pocket clip, and has most of the important tools that I would need when out and about.
I've always been a Leatherman guy. I own several, but the one I use the most is the Rebar. I am intrigued with the big pliers Gerber in this video and the Victorinox.
I switched from the rebar to the swisstool. The only things that are better about the leatherman are the replaceable cutters, narrower needle nose, and the nail nicks are tougher if you have extremely short nails. But fit and finish is much nicer on the victorinox, and it has never devolved rust on the file which has happened on all my leatherman tools (Oregon coast) and the tools seem to be tougher too. (I broke a knife tip and the small flat screwdriver on the rebar) also the victorinox chisel is awesome.
I’ve bought a tool from all these brands. My two favourite tools are the standard SwissTool and the Leatherman Charge. It depends on my mood as to which one I carried at work. But the SwissTool has been winning the last few years. Both are high quality tools. I used to love the Gerbers with the slide out plier heads. But I grew to dislike them because the handles could pinch my palm when I squeezed them.
I've had my Victorinox Swiss Tool for over a decade. I abuse it, but am responsible when prying. I've used it as a hammer on several occasions (I'm talking about very hard strikes) and it's completely fine. The thing that probably helps the Victorinox the most is their heat treatment process; it's legendary. Blade is EASY to sharpen and can take a very keen edge. Scissors are the best in the industry. I could go on and on.
I have been leaning toward getting another. I had one of the first Swiss multitool iterations. Sadly, it went for a swim while salmon fishing in a river in Alaska.
I have tested all the brands and models mentioned in the video. For me sweet spot is Victorinox Spirit X when I am carrying a separated folding knife, if not - Leatherman Wave. Gerber bites your hand while clamping thin cables, Free P4 has poor set of tools comparing to its size. SOG is nice but it does not have good scissors + wood saw combo.
One big problem with the SOG's is how super wide you have to open the grips to get the pliers jaws fully opened. It's larger than almost any human hand and you can't grip it one-handed which defeats the purpose
Yeah, extra leverage throughout the whole travel isn't really an advantage, without being able to "reset" the plier to handle relationship. Maybe they'll add that feature lol.
I have that titanium leatherman charge, its been a hell of a tool to have on me. I use it way more than I thought, but one piece did break on it, the medium screwdriver as they call it. The flathead. Don't put too much pressure on that specifically if i have to warn you about anything. Otherwise, at cost it's amazing.
I watched a guy ruin his Gerber wire cutter from just cutting a standard coat hanger...I cut it repeatedly with my Leatherman with no problems... Gerber told him that was considered abuse of the tool...sooo guess which one you should buy
That doesn’t sound right to me: i used to cut nails and barbwire with my gerber, never had problems of any kind. Fun fact, a colleague of mine struggled to cut a thick barbwire with his leatherman because of its ergonomics... that’s the main reason i still go to gerber.
I'm not a fan of Gerber @ all, I'm Leatherman all the way. However I'm not saying it didn't happen but that just doesn't sound like Gerber. I've heard time and time again whenever somebody has any problems whatsoever with a product of theirs they just send a whole nother shitty tool to them. If it wasn't the guy just bullshittin you then I take it maybe the warranty guy was having a shitty day at his shitty job at the shitty company.
Super presentation of some of the options out there 👍I had always carried a Swiss Army Knife but graduated to my first Leatherman (crunch) a few years ago. Sadly it has turned into an addiction....... Last time I looked, it was at 11 😱
While serving in the US NAVY (active duty) I used a Gerber. Then I enlisted into the Army Reserve and became a Leatherman guy. Both are great but the Leatherman super tool 300 is my go to
I’ve broken 3 SOG, 4 Gerber, and have owned a Leatherman Core, Super Tool 300, Skeletool CX, MUT, and ARC. Leatherman never broke or twisted the frames and withstood diving in the ocean and abuse without a failure, on top of the MUT being in my pocket for 14 years. Leatherman makes the only tool I trust with my life
I carry a Leatherman Skeletool everyday. It clips o to my😊 mmbelt loop and really has most of the tools that I ever need. There is a Leatherman wave plus in my console just in case. My surge sits at home, waiting for me to put it on keto. I changed out the glass breaker tip on the screwdriver for a flat / Phillips bit from another model that I own.
The answer is simple: Surge. It can cut 2.5 strands of wires or 2.5mm screws pretty easy. Maybe even more, but i only tried 2.5mm. But i admit, i wish the tip of the pliers be blunt .
My current are Sog power lock EOD b63n-cp, Leatherman charge+TTI, and Leatherman Surge, and I’ve owned several others over the years as well. The surge is my edc, the charge is my swap out for edc, the Sog is in the glove box of my truck.
I lose knives. My parents gave me my first Leatherman. Had a Wave after that. Currently I have a Gerber. The only downside is the phillips head blade I broke not long ago. Have to get that fixed. I have done whole service calls with a multitool, including using the saw to cut a fixture hole in drywall.
I used my leatherman oht for a few years, but recently bought a charge titanium and carry that now. I also bought an old sog paratool at a garage sale and have carried that a few times.
Leatherman offers the widest variety of full-size heavy-duty tools and some of those are excellent. The only major drawback is their proprietary flat-bit system. SOG offers the best small and light multitools for EDC and occasional use (PowerLitre and PowerPint). Gear pliers system offers extra that extra oomph most other small tools lack (and big tools do not need). Standard 1/4 bit holder is a big plus too.
I have a Leatherman Free P4 and Gerber MP600. I love the Leatherman and being able to get to all tools with one hand and put it away. I work in the Utilities Field (Telecom, Electric and Natural Gas) and use it often. It is my EDC. The Gerber is a backup if the P4 is temporarily misplaced. Much better price point on the Gerber tools
I had a local retired machinist make me a custom multi tool. Yes they were over 550 by the time they were done over 12 years ago but he poured his heart, years of knowledge and passion into them you can tell. I have had them for 12 years and other than the typical superficial marks they feel and look like new. Quality you cant match with production products. If i knew back then the personal value they would add to my collection i would have gladly paid the man double. I highly suggest looking into the people out there making custom sets of multitools, they are on a whole different level of quality, great conversation pieces and it just feels much better giving your hard earned money to a person/small business rather than corporation. Plus not a single cent of mine went to packaging and shipping or any of that unneeded expenses usually we just accept attached to our knives.
If I may go off piste for a moment. In my view the Nextool Flagship Pro is the best, certainly for me. Every tool is accessible from outside. Pliers are sprung. Exceptionally good full size scissors. Locking super-sharp Knife and saw.
The Leatherman Charge is my go-to at home (and I have a couple of the Wave models as well) while the Victorinox Spirit is the "away from home" choice. Both makes are first rate in construction and quality. My first Swiss Army Knife was a Swiss Champ and purchased nearly 40 years ago. It was recently refurbished by Victorinox and looks like the day I bought it.
I wish they would make a backpacking /camper style / bushcraft type... Using 14c28n sandvik stainless steel for all parts.... Maybe they have something like it out there, but I haven't found the right one just yet😋
I have a very old Leatherman Super tool which I paid 12 or 14 bucks for at an estate sale years and years ago and have yet to use it . I was just in the process of attaching it to my Ontario SP -53 sheath for what I would call a true disaster combo. I guess it is now a collectors item now that ontario has gone by by damn shame . Happy Trails
Awesome video! Can you do one on mini multi tools. I had a sog I really enjoyed and it got lost. Instead of the pliers being the main tool it had scissors. Great videos keep it up!
I am also a big fan of the minitools, especially on a streetbike, my big Victorianism is with me on a Vespa tour. And don’t make the mistake, which the companies want to tell you: Always have all tools with you. That is stupid. They only want your money. If you are out with your girlfriend and want to serve her a bottle of German wine, just keep your Swiss Army knife with you.
I never really took the squirt seriously, until I bought them for my boys. They are about to be ten, and have had them two years. They are great. I had to buy myself one! I don’t use them enough to carry my full sized leatherman, but the squirt takes no space and is very handy. I’ll have to look at the equivalent SOG.
@@banditone00 Yeah exactly, I always had full sized multi tools but I never had them with me when I needed to use a simple tool. I still have big tools and they are OC better. But it's just the size ang lightness of these tiny ones that truly makes them EDC.
Do you have the Spirit? I have the beefier Swiss Tool and I use that thing as a hammer from time to time. It's totally fine. I abuse it and it's going strong for over a decade.
Love my Gerber! Daily use for years. One weird thing, however, that I wish they would fix. The jig saw blade holder won’t fit standard jig saw blades. Had to grind the blades off just a tiny bit to make them work. I carry it with a short metal blade with an assortment of blades in my bag. Most are too long to fit closed. All had to be modified as mentioned.
I had no clue Victorinox was in on this. I will continue more searches on this. I was looking for videos on multi tools and this is the first to mention Victorinox
The free series simply blow away the competition for ease of use and smooth operation ! Makes the rest look pretty Stone Age ! The ARC takes it up another level with its toolset and that Magnacut blade.
Oh man, oh man, oh man…. Gerber has been my go to for a LONG time. However… the Leatherman p4 free has been in my pocket for about six months now and there it will stay until it cannot function anymore. Expensive, but a game changer.
Very good presentation ... I own both a Gerber Suspension and a SOG Poweraccess Deluxe, but I am pretty underwhelmed by both of them . Now I think I 'll try the Leatherman Surge + Set .
I've learned over the years reviews and all that don't matter for MT's.. you gotta just buy and try til you find the one that works.. I HATED the Getber Diesel.. but plenty love it. I LOVE my Leatherman PST.. does everything I need and is tiny and dense.. and symetrical which is important to me. The PST is the best bet, I have a 1995.
I've used the Leatherman MUT for over 10 years at work, great for clearing stoppages in anger on an LMT Defender... (It happens when your bosses buy sh*t cheap training ammo...) But as much as I love my old weathered MUT, I'm very tempted by the new Arc...
Should have showed the Leatherman Signal. It's interesting. I have one & a Rebar. I usually EDC a Gerber MP600. I keep my Leathermans at home or in a pack.
My favorite is the Victorinox Rambler. So easy to put on a keychain and just the most used kit in my pocket. //Okay question time! We can ask questions on here, right? Can you recommend some good-looking, well-designed 'hard use heavy use" folders. I've seen a willion lists and they range from a bit too tacticool ugly (ie Adamas) (99% of Cold Steels, not a fan of their tacticool look) to too plain (ie Ontario Rat). Is it possible to get stylish yet sturdy knives? Closest I've seen is Miguron Pelora, Sebenza Large, Petrified Fish Beluga, Giant Mouse Nimbus v3 etc.
Still love my blackened Leatherman Surge and Juice C2, that I EDC in my tweed sporran regularly. I hope Leatherman creates a TSA complaint blade-less multitool, the size of the Juice into 2024. I'm a Leatherman man.
Hey DCA.i fully understand your tool choices,, they are the leading competitors in the space.. but for 20+ years my go to plier based muti-tool has been and still is a schrade tough tool with tools that fold out perpendicular to the pliers as opposed to parallel with them as in most other tools .. but i know schrade doesn't make or sell as many tools as your choices so its understandable
SOG Paratool. Needs to come back in titanium (for weight) and with the solid plastic Blackie Collins belt holster. I no longer carry mine, it stays in the shop wher I won't lose it.
nice vid but what about the smaller, more pocketable multitools? I've loved my leatherman squirt p4 for years and has done mostly everything I've needed for basic EDC
The PS4 was discontinued, which i think is a bizarre decision by Leatherman. For dignified tweezers like these i think it's either the Gerber Dime or the superior (but larger) Victorinox Tinker Deluxe SAK.
For the price, SOG is the best, for the quality and "innovation" Leatherman wins, for cool points its Victorinox. I have a SOG powerpint within arms reach most of the time, and i used to have a Surge in my rucksack until it got stolen. 😭 But, if I'm honest, the powerpint does enough of the work that I need before I have to go to a toolbox and I'm not convinced I'd get that much more work done, sufficiently often to justify buying another leatherm.
Frankly, gerber has been way more innovative than leatherman over the last two decades. Case in point, leatherman came out with the OHT as a copy of gerbers mp600 design, and gerber responded with the centerdrive which is better in every way. That is why the OHT is from my understanding discontinued or about to be discontinued, and the centerdrive is not.
I prefer the Leatherman. Mainly due to the wire cutters being replaceable (which the vast majority of people don't have to care about for their lifetime.) Otherwise, the Victorinox are incredible.
This Fella definitely knows what he talk about. Very polite, and i like the fact that he is not trashing product over other product. Very professional. Subscribed. Thank you Man. I will go with Victorinox, Leatherman is only disappointing me lately with theirs Garbage steel Quality.
Haven't had time to watch the video yet, but what's the deal with Leatherman accessories? It seems they are in such small supply and some people are selling them for crazily inflated prices. Specifically the ratcheting bit driver extension. Also what's the relationship with KnifeCenter and Leatherman because I'm wondering if KnifeCenter will be selling the Leatherman ARC when it's released? (I've heard it's a production multi tool so won't be exclusive like some of their garage offerings.)
ARC turned out to be Leatherman Garage limited run so far. For the ratcheting driver - it is "trendy" right now (lots of videos published) so lots of peoples buys it "just in case". Leatherman will resupply them sooner or later.
It's simple- Victorinox... Victorinox has one big problem, I always can't choose what to take today: my Victorinox Swisstool or my Victorinox Swisschamp.. Both are great and sometimes you have to take them both
Leatherman BATCH #005 with the MagnaCut steel is probably the best multitool currently. And remember not all multitools are the same. I was in Hawaii and realized I needed a multitool. There was a 5.11 Tactical store nearby, saw they had a branded multitool, and purchased it on the spot thinking it would have the tools most other multitools have. WRONG!! It was a special EMT multitool with very odd features and just about useless. It didn't even have a proper knife! 😫
Miałem leatherman, ale po tym jak połamał mnie się śrubokręt podczas przykręcania śrubki do ramki zdjęciowej od razu się go pozbyłem kupiłem victorinox. To było 15 lat temu
I edc carry two original PST II models with scissors and inside tools. That is a big feature to me and not a bug. Because in Germany it makes this full blown tool kinda twohanded and legal to carry. Yes plIng is uncomfortable. But the package and robust nature is great for the usage vs weight ratio. Squirt and Freeatyle are too small, Wave+ so ot feature the slim form factor perfect for pocket pouches like Alpaka zip pouch pro I use. Skeletool … no scissors. So the oldie still a winning concept for me.
I have one of the original PST’s from 15 or 20 years ago. I carried it for years, but don’t have a need for a multi tool anymore. I just carry folding knives now. I still have it with the original leather sheath. Fun to see. Thanks. 🔪🎸
Perfect timing, the lock bar for one of the screwdrivers on my leatherman juice s2 broke today. Can this be fixed? If not, what are some multitools that are similar to the juice s2?
SOG powerpint is the winner all multitools, it's compact, practical and more future than others brands.. The problem is steel way too soft, SOG need to upgrade more quality steel at all..
I was a machine gunner in the army from 2000 to 2004. Gerber was my goto to clear jams as I could deploy it with one hand quickly
MP600 Gerber is also standard issue in Canada as well
I always broke the tools off my gerbers I was issued. My original leatherman super tool is still completely intact, two decades later.
My mp600 is still intact 13 years later after deployment and heavy use as a diesel mechanic don't be a gorilla with your tools 🤣
Is it really your go to when it's just standard issue. Woke military. Back to transgender sensitivity training every quarter and CRT
Bro didn't rank up for 4 years hahaha
Mainly a Gerber guy, but have some SOG’s, too. I think I’ve owned 1 leatherman. What one of them needs to do is offer a build your own, so you can select the tools you want most.
Look at the Goat Multitool.
Hot swapping! That thing looks awesome! Thanks for turning me on to this.
Gerber NXT suspension used by the US Military is GREAT
roxon have just the thing

I have the Original Personal Survival Tool.

had the needle nose replact and the blade, free of charge in 2019. and they gave me a new pouch as well.

Unfortunately lost in an attic, replacement has locks on the handle. Miss that old guy...
I've owned 1 Leatherman, 1 sog and 1 Swiss Tool. And hands down the best was the Swiss Tool X.

It was recently refurbished by Victorinox and looks like the day I bought it.
Gerber mp600 scout pro for work, leatherman skeltool cx for everywhere else. Love both
I wish they would make a backpacking /camper style / bushcraft type... Using 14c28n sandvik stainless steel for all parts.... Maybe they have something like it out there, but I haven't found the right one just yet😋
Thank you very much for the spoiler alert up front. Saved me a lot of time.
Leatherman and Victorinox are my favorites although the Gerber center drive is awesome.
Have the Victorinox Spirit X now for over 8 years, if its not on my belt its in my edc pack. Fit ,finish, and function, are top notch.
Leatherman Wingman has never let me down. Absolutely love it.
Just figured out it fits in my change pocket. 😊
It's a good little tool for sure
Good tools 👍
Awesome video! Can you do one on mini multi tools. I had a sog I really enjoyed and it got lost. Instead of the pliers being the main tool it had scissors. Great videos keep it up!
I am also a big fan of the minitools, especially on a streetbike, my big Victorianism is with me on a Vespa tour.
And don’t make the mistake, which the companies want to tell you:
Always have all tools with you. That is stupid. They only want your money. If you are out with your girlfriend and want to serve her a bottle of German wine, just keep your Swiss Army knife with you.
I run with a SOG power pint in black most days. It has loads of tools, a pocket clip and is about the same size as a Leatherman Squirt.
The powerpint has a large tool-set and can fit in the small 5th pocket(watch pocket) of most jeans.
Great review! Leatherman has 25 year warranty, Gerber has a "LIFETIME" warranty which works for me.....
I went with the Swiss on mine. It’s more elegant than tough like a gerber but I still like it very much
Do you have the Spirit?
I have the beefier Swiss Tool and I use that thing as a hammer from time to time. It's totally fine. I abuse it and it's going strong for over a decade.
I've also had issues with the Gerber's breaking in various ways (not from hammering).
I'm still using my '86 Leatherman, although the warranty has expired
The Victorinox MX clip is outstanding, and it's so much narrower than the others!
I love my free p4, the plier strengthened sog though is pretty cool and would come in handy, can wait for the ARK
Very good presentation ...
I own both a Gerber Suspension and a SOG Poweraccess Deluxe, but I am pretty underwhelmed
by both of them .
Victorinox ! Simply
I love my Dual Force. I only use the pliers and screwdriver from it but that's all I need.
I've used the Leatherman MUT for over 10 years at work, great for clearing stoppages in anger on an LMT Defender... (It happens when your bosses buy sh*t cheap training ammo...)
But as much as I love my old weathered MUT, I'm very tempted by the new Arc...
Nextool and Roxon deserve a shout for their recent models
Should have showed the Leatherman Signal. It's interesting. I have one & a Rebar. I usually EDC a Gerber MP600. I keep my Leathermans at home or in a pack.
Gerber dual force looks amazing. Thanks for sharing!
I have a few Leatherman multi-tools, including the Wave, but my Victorinox Spirit is next level quality (especially the ratchet set)..
Yep. It's amazing how people overlook the Swiss Tool.
@@randelrobbins1408 I've sent a few as gifts into Leatherman country and the other ranchers and workers are impressed by it.
@@gordonmacdowell8117 Wow! You give great gifts!
Still love my blackened Leatherman Surge and Juice C2, that I EDC in my tweed sporran regularly. I hope Leatherman creates a TSA complaint blade-less multitool, the size of the Juice into 2024. I'm a Leatherman man.
I really wish these companies would let us customize and choose the features we want. Especially Victorinox.
Skelatool cx goes with me everywhere I go every day.
SOG Paratool. Needs to come back in titanium (for weight) and with the solid plastic Blackie Collins belt holster. I no longer carry mine, it stays in the shop wher I won't lose it.
Mine was stolen a long time ago..
Would love for them to come back with no changes..
Just the same tool..
nice vid but what about the smaller, more pocketable multitools? I've loved my leatherman squirt p4 for years and has done mostly everything I've needed for basic EDC
The PS4 was discontinued, which i think is a bizarre decision by Leatherman. For dignified tweezers like these i think it's either the Gerber Dime or the superior (but larger) Victorinox Tinker Deluxe SAK.
And i forgot another: the SOG Powerpint.
I have several multi-tools and honestly don't use them a lot but I would be in the market for one that accepts standard quarter inch bits
Carried the 300 in my work jacket around the farm for years .
One hand opened pliers my favorite 10 years using my gerber every day
Love my Surge, I have wide hands so the Wave is a little shorter than I like. Leatherman is my favorite all day long.
Surge is King 👑
I prefer the Leatherman. Mainly due to the wire cutters being replaceable (which the vast majority of people don't have to care about for their lifetime.)
Otherwise, the Victorinox are incredible.
I think the Gerber MP series has the best grip for when you have to bear down
The Swiss Tool is the most comfy to use. It’s almost like ur not even holding metal at all. It’s so soft.
My biggest issue with the gerber center drive. Is that the pliers can't hold a flat piece of metal securely. It can always slip out.
It's simple- Victorinox... Victorinox has one big problem, I always can't choose what to take today: my Victorinox Swisstool or my Victorinox Swisschamp.. Both are great and sometimes you have to take them both
Very informative and helpful. Thank you very much, I’ll be passing along the video link to help friends and customers I know 👏🇨🇦.
Those victorinox would be literally perfect if they included the victrinox scale tools (tweezers - toothpick - mini pen) perfect i tell you
I love my Free but I carry my Bond and Curl more because they are so compact and easy to EDC.
Ok here we go...back after I watch
Ok, when can we expect a response video? 😂
@@Joshadamwyo I'm trying to formulate how to say...SOG is absolutely horrible without coming across as an elitist asshole lol.
@@Joshadamwyo I've held of doing that kind of video..but I think I need to eventually
@@maxlvledclooking forward to it....😊
Outstanding presentation!
Thanks for sharing these with us!
Waiting for SOG to come out with a new heavy duty Multi tool with replaceable Nose plier cutter like the Leatherman and the centre 1/4 drive.
For decades I own several models of Leatherman and Victorinox and now doubts about,LT🇺🇲. is the best for hard daily use.
I would love to see the OHT from Leatherman
Tip broke off leatherman wave trying to remove blank firing adapter from M4. Mind you, probably my fault, but still turned me off them...
I have one of the original PST’s from 15 or 20 years ago. I carried it for years, but don’t have a need for a multi tool anymore. I just carry folding knives now. I still have it with the original leather sheath. Fun to see. Thanks. 🔪🎸
i prefer the victorinox by a mile
I find my swiss tool fufils everything i need in a work environment and performs all the functions i need and all these well.
