Unlike some other reviewers, I really appreciate the demonstration of the tool in your videos. Well done, sir. I have been using a G.I. gerber mp600 for years, but just purchased the wingman.
Well thank you sir. I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I like Wingman, I think it is a very easy to carry and useful multi tool. I hope you find it as useful as I have.
I got a Wingman over the a Sidekick because I would use the scissors way more than the saw. Right now, the Wingman is my only full-sized Leatherman with an outside accessible knife. I’m also a big fan of the pocket clip.
I have several Leatherman tools. I carry the Wingman every day in my job as an aircraft mechanic. It does everything I need for on-the -spot tool needs. I have carried it on 12 day back country hikes as well and it was always there to serve. The package opener is something that Leatherman should incorporate on all their multi-tools.
24:10 "a good multi-tool for someone who wants a little bit of capability but doesn't want to carry around the weight of a Wave or Charge or Surge or Rebar" The Rebar is 6.7oz and the Wingman is 7oz
The Rebar has become my EDC plier based multi Tool. I carry a Victorinox knife based tool on me and the Rebar stays in the car, unless going on a long walk or hike at the park or on a trail.
I have been carrying the Wingman for the last 3 years as my EDC tool, Yes I do love the outside scissors, and I don't mind the combo blade because I always carry a folder in my other pocket. The first thing that drew me to the Wingman was the pocket clip. I had been looking for a full size pocket carry mult itool for some time when the Wingman came out. This tool will stay in my pocket for some time to come.
I bought a couple "kicks" off ebay cheap and on one the tools would flop out. Sent it in to leatherman and they sent me a "wingman" with a sheath. At first I was pissed, until I played with it a bit and noticed how sophisticated the shape and design of it. What a step up in engineering from the early leatherman pst. I have a wave, rebar, kick, blast, original (pst), lost an awesome Swisstool RS that I was reserving as a true survival tool for my wilderness pack, and I've owned a couple of the schrade "tough tool", but I prefer carrying my wingman most of the time cause it suits my needs. Before I retired, I spent tens of thousands on dedicated mechanic tools and rarely ever tried to use a multi tool instead. But now am old and just like to do small easy "fix it" jobs like draw slides, door hinges, or the like...nothing heavy. The wingman perfectly suits my needs. I like to have it on walks with my dog and trips around town. A good "urban" (as you said) for this old guy. Thanks Ben. Keep up the good work.
I have never felt like the Wingman got enough love. I have always thought it was a pretty dang good EDC tool. Has just about everything a regular person needs on a daily basis without all they extras that they wouldn't necessarily use. In my opinion, it is a great urban EDC. I like the Swisstool RS by the way, an excellent tool.
Upgraded finally to surge after using wave since 98 or 99 cant be sure. You're right the surge lil heavier but what a beast. Enjoy your vids. Really enjoy leatherman and Victorinox tools and your unbiased and honest about products. Nice
Great review. Here's a good whinge for you. When you mentioned how prices are high for the Leatherman tools in the US, in Australia, the very same tools are at least twice or three times the price. Obviously, there are a number of important factors, why these tools are a bit more pricey...like shipping costs, currency exchange rates between the two countries, the size of a potential market and turnover, competition from other producers etc. I think you get the idea. So to cut the chase, I'm always looking for a Leatherman bargin, even it's a used one. Any yet, one day I was in Bunnings (Australia's largest hardware retailer), and in the tool shop, I saw a few Gerber models (no Leatherman) and I purchased the Gerber Vise for $22.00 AU. All in all, your reviews are great, and BTW, my choice of Leatherman that I own is the Crunch. :)
I agree with your observation about the price point fir the Wingman. About 6 years ago Hime Depot had the Wingman on sale for about $30. The next year they had the Skeletool on sale fir the same price. A good price for what was then $40 multitools. I truly can't believe the huge price increases at Leatherman- especially with the increased competition.
Unfortunately the scissors turned me off on this one. I was hoping for Surge like scissors. Also for 60 that's too high. 39.99 feels like a good price for this one. Looking forward to your review of the Spirit X. That one might be the tool for me.
Great review! I have most of the Leatherman multi tool. I recently went back to the wingman. If the juice s2 had a clip that would be my perfect multi tool. You can’t have everything.
@@txtoolcrib I've been binge watching your vids too and I'm having a blast haha Ever since Leatherman's price increase, the Wingman and Sidekick are retailing at $50 now. Gerber's NXT looks like the most competitive entry-level multitool now. Maybe you can look into it? :)
Another solid review, Ben! :D I paid $27 for my Wingman. If it did not have the package opener, I would have returned it. The package opener is so great. I hope more multi-tools get it. Great review of the Leatherman Wingman! I got my Wingman over 12 years ago as a gift before leaving my country to go to South East Asia. It is still serving me well! Normally is has lived in my backpack, but recently I have been using it as my EDC on my belt. The pocket clip is fantastic and works great on my belt an even on my jeans and shorts without a belt, making it super handy! It helps me get those quick tasks done around the house or when I'm out. I would love a Wave or Surge, but the prices here are very expensive, I'd just get my tool kit when I need to do serious work. I'm thinking of getting a Victorinox Rambler, or Huntsman or Pioneer X as a companion for my Wingman. Love your reviews. Take care and God bless.
I rock the Leatherman Wingman on the daily, the only update it really needs is a longer blade to fill in the empty space, and an double sided files instead of 1 1/4 "rule"/measure
Along with my other comment, I should say thank you. It was a great examination of the Sidekick. P.S. you talked me out of the sidekick. I’m getting a Wave+
There was a time that I really wished that the pliers on all multi tools were all spring assist. I’ve found that I really prefer no spring. I feel like they always open a bit too far. What was discovered was that the spring mechanism within the pivot of the plier will always fail before the plier does. I really don’t like the spring on the OHT.
bought one a few years ago to replace my supertool300 that i send back for warranty every 3 years because i wear out the pivots to the point they just dont work right, also to replace my gerber mp400 that was lost. i use it only for fishing now. honestly i should have gotten the mp400 again, leathermans warranty is amazing and there are no complaints and that alone makes it worth buying one but the function of the mp400 was outstanding in my opinion. and yes i have a leatherman oht, similar to the mp600 but not the same.
I've had the wingman for a few years. One complaint I had was when using the pliers with any force, you'd come away with some pain in your palm from the handle and some pain. I have larger hand and the wingman is kinda small and the edges aren't very forgiving. I think those three together caused the problem for me. Just upgraded to the wave+ and the longer handle and smoother edges fixed that problem.
Spot on, went to look at the Free last week and although it is a cool design the actual tool set is underwhelming and seemed a bit too thin and flimsy for me. I’m a fan of the Signal but it needs an aggressive file and a sharp pair of scissors. Other than that it feels way more sturdy than the Free series.
0:08 The Wingman is now _$70_ , and Wave+ _$110_ . This is not due to "increasing manufacturing costs". Leatherman is simply being a for-profit business and charging what they can get away with now that "EDC" is a big business.
Just picked this up at Lowe’s for about 50 bucks with a sale and a military discount. Overall, I have to agree about the clamshell package opener - great tool for this. This is my first Leatherman, so I am really digging the spring action pliers.
Congratulations. While most Leatherman multi tools are not spring loaded, it’s a really nice feature on the multi tool. I think this a great urban edc. Absolutely love that package opener too.
I was debating on getting the free p4 or wave plus as my first multi tool for the house and edc. I purchased the wave because of the interchangeable bits and the eyeglasses screwdriver lol
I really like the straight blade in the Sidekick. I wish it was on the Wingman. I’m OK without the small serrated blade, because the package opener is what really sells it for me with this tool.
I have a Leatherman Wingman for EDC use. I also have a Charge TTi, a Juice S2 and a Kick (not Sidekick, but Kick). I bought the Wingman as a replacement for my quite banged up Juice S2. The Juice still works, but looks awfull (bend scales, missing paint, that kind of damage. I hate Leatherman doesnt build Juice S2's anymore. I think the Wingman is the closest current Leatherman product. I mean, outside blade, outside scissors, the toolset in itself is quite similar The Wingman is also quite a lot smaller and lighter compared to the Charge. It is however bulkier and heavier then the Juice S2. For me the Wingman is a good fit, but I did swap the blade for a straight Sidekick blade which I bought seperately. For size I like the Juice S2 better and some days I still carry it. On days I know on forehand I will use the multitool more, I carry the Charge TTi.
I’ve always felt that the Wingman was a fairly useful multi tool at it’s price point. I know there are some that do not agree with that assessment, but I find it quite useful. The package opener is awesome by the way.
Hello, I have been loving your Videos. Could I have your advice, I have both the victorinox Swisstool and spirit but wanted another multi tool I can leave in the car (I have a socket set in the boot). As I'm in the UK/England Leatherman is very expensive over hear compared to Victorinox (Traffifs I reckon). My question is, is it worth getting Leatherman that cost far more than the Victorinox?
Excellent Tool Love mine only 1 issue. PLEASE don't use anything to strip wire other than a high quality wire stripper. Electrical Current travels on the outside of the wire. One nick in the conductor can and probably will cause heat to build up and eventually can cause the conductor to overheat and or catch fire. A multi-tool can not consistently strip the insulation off the wire without compromising the conductor. Unless you are really accurate or really lucky, spend the $10-20 on a good wire stripper. Ex........Klein Tools. Wiring is no hobby...............Call a licensed Electrician.
Really enjoy your channel. Just so you know knife works.com has wingman for 31dollars and rebar for46 dollars. Month away from 2020 that's real good price. Picked up 2 each for Christmas presents.
Just found your channel and I’m having fun geeking out on multi-tool vids! On the Wingman, I bought min back when they were $30 and liked it so much that I bought two. Simply couldn’t beat it for that price and I love the spring loaded pliers and the scissors on the outside. What I don’t like: I hate combo blades. Seriously, they’re annoying. I also find that the belt clip is pretty useless. Would I buy the Wingman again at the current price of roughly $60? I’m not sure. For $60 I’d like to see replaceable wire cutters and some refinement to the tool that I just don’t think is there. I still carry my a Wingman on a regular basis and it hasn’t let me down.
I actually have this tool “the wingman” I love it ! ... it’s good for the price! I just wish the inner tools had the option to lock ! And am sure this tool would be a very good seller!
Hi, Ben! I’d love to see a size comparison between Wingman and Free P2. I’m pocket carrying a Wingman now, after carrying a Gerber Dime for a long time ( mine is a much more casual use than yours ;-) ) This works surprisingly well. Wondering if P2 is the one I’ll eventually upgrade to. Is P2 less pocketable than Wingman?
I will try to keep that in mind. That’s actually a decent comparison, though I think in the end that the FREE P2 will edge out the Wingman in capability. I will keep it in my mind for a future video, thanks.
my daughter is in her ait at ft Gordon right now .. 25n is her mos .. what is ur recommendations for a good multitool for her. the mos is basically shes in running, repair and maintenance of communications. wiring , servers , computers, phone.. etc etc.
That is an excellent question. I think I like the Wave/Charge series for that application. I like the fact that is has the micro driver, which can be very useful for smaller screws. I like the fact that it has the ability to change into multi drivers. I personally would choose the Charge+ black on black because it is a military application and for the better knife steel. It is a bit expensive, but I think she would be the envy of her fellow service members. The Charge will come with a pocket clip and sheath for multiple carry options as well. It will also include a decent selection of bits, so it would not be necessary to purchase the full bit kit.
The crazy thing is that there is space for a 1/3” longer main blade. Mine also have a bad play in the plier head. Gonna try to give it a good blow with a hammer/drift..
In mid 2013 it was $22 (twenty two!) bucks. And bits set was $13 and extention was $9.7.... ...now its $59 on the same amazon, holly sh.... was 2-3 times cheaper!
I bought my Wingman when it first came out. It was $25.00 on sale at Bass Pro. It is a decent tool, but it is not worth what they are charging for it now. I personally would not pay more than $40.00 for it.
I beleive wing man and sidekick wire cutters should be redesign...I have sidekick which fails to cut wires as there is gap between wire cutters.excellent budget EDC but disappointed with wire cutters.
Nice video, but... you're not using the wire strippers correctly. Actually I haven't seen anyone on TH-cam using them correctly. Steps: 1) Start with both handles "closed" 2) Open only the handle containing the wire stripper fully 3) Open the wire stripper until it locks into place 4) Grip the open handle with your right hand so that your thumb covers the wire stripper 5) Insert the wire into the wire stripper holding it with your left hand 6) Use your right thumb to press the wire against the wire stripper edge and pull the wire with your left hand. Best regards, and keep up the videos! :)
I like the way you do your wire stripping, but to me it’s not practical. I do residential electrical work and 99% of the time I don’t have the space to rotate my tool, or can’t twist the wire itself. I’ve always stripped my wire holding it at 45 degree(roughly) and slicing away from you.
This is my edc multitool , I want to change the blade out to a plain edge, what blade would fit in this? I’ve looked for sidekick blade but not easy to find. Would wave or surge work? I think a black surge blade would look really sharp in this.
I had a wingman for about a week when they first came out. When I returned it the Lowe’s employee asked why, and I told him “it just doesn’t feel like a Leatherman product”. I stand by that to this day
The very first time I tried to use the small flathead it immediately broke with a loud Ping! Still carrying it. The broken tool opens boxes better than the box opener.
So disappointed in this product. I use this for military training explosives but it cant cut the crossmatch like the wave does. If the wave was spring loaded I'd like it the best.
Im from the future leatherman are cloned now patients are up lol a good one is 30 bucks for a wave clone a leatherman wave plus is now 119 crazy stupid overpriced nice but costly 😮😊
The plier stopper plate broke bothside of my Wingman, i have seen people having the same problem as mine... Bad MT just dont buy it, doesnt live to its name... Just stick with SURGE or either WAVE...
Why is it that MOST Leatherman all have the same tools. Wouldn’t it be better to add things like the package opener to the Wave Mk 2, or the Charge plus......... coz both of those are virtually the same !!! Mix it up abit !!! Leatherman is getting boring, they need to change around their tool design for once.
I must disagree with you about the package opener. I believe it is a gimmick. Package openers have only been around for maybe a decade. I have used my knife blade to open packages my entire life. If the package opener was really relevant, Victornox would have brought them out 50 years ago.
Fifty years ago, they didn't have blister packs. I think it is a bit obtuse of a statement to say that if something was relevant, Victorinox would have already come up with it. Victorinox, while I like their products, is not the end all be all. The package opener on the Wingman/Rev from Leatherman is no gimmick, I can assure you. It is a far safer and more effective instrument for opening up plastic packaging than any knife will ever be.

Hey I bought leatherman wingman love it a lot better than leatherman rev love package opener 😎
I’ve always felt that the Wingman was a fairly useful multi tool at it’s price point. I know there are some that do not agree with that assessment, but I find it quite useful. The package opener is awesome by the way.
I have a wingman. Great little tool for fixung my bike in a pinch. I am getting a Surge though.
Night and day difference in those two.
I really love your videos very informative 🤙
Thank you sir.
Point taken.
Really enjoy your channel. Just so you know knife works.com has wingman for 31dollars and rebar for46 dollars. Month away from 2020 that's real good price. Picked up 2 each for Christmas presents.
Hey thanks for that.
I wish that package cutter would replace the fixed interior screwdriver in the wave. Tool would be darn near perfect with that change
Great review of the wingman
Thank you very much.
I gave $50 for my "Wingman" nearly 7 or 8 years ago. I felt like that was too much at the time. I was really disappointed in the scissors.
I actually have this tool “the wingman” I love it ! ... it’s good for the price! I just wish the inner tools had the option to lock ! And am sure this tool would be a very good seller!
The lack of locking tools is definitely one disadvantage that this multi tool has over some of the competition.
Too bad the Wave and Surge doesn't have that package cutter. It's an underrated tool and I love that tool as much as you seem to.
There for i use the flat edge on the serrated blade of the surge
I find it funny the way you say phenomenal. Dunno why but it's just funny.
Too much southern drawl?
@@txtoolcrib Perhaps :)
@@txtoolcrib thank u sir .. I will take ur advise.
Great stuff as usual!
Thanks again.
On the WAVE you could use the tin opener as a package opener
Out of the box no, but if you sharpen the point, then yes. It is a very common mod that many people do.
Wingman here in Philipines have the prize of 70$ in equivalent in peso
The crazy thing is that there is space for a 1/3” longer main blade. Mine also have a bad play in the plier head. Gonna try to give it a good blow with a hammer/drift..
Wish they would increase that blade size.
Scissors cant cut paper now. Been a year since new. And only issue is scissors. Looking to get sidekick instead
In mid 2013 it was $22 (twenty two!) bucks. And bits set was $13 and extention was $9.7....
...now its $59 on the same amazon, holly sh.... was 2-3 times cheaper!
I thought they jumped up in price at a pretty rapid rate myself.
I bought my Wingman when it first came out. It was $25.00 on sale at Bass Pro. It is a decent tool, but it is not worth what they are charging for it now. I personally would not pay more than $40.00 for it.
Just like everything else, prices always go up.
Got mines for $20 new old stock off offer up
Sidekick is almost identical except the package opener is replaced with a short serrated blade.
And it has a saw instead of Scissors
So it seems that the Wave+ is the greatest multi tool that has ever been designed.
Many, many people feel that way.
I beleive wing man and sidekick wire cutters should be redesign...I have sidekick which fails to cut wires as there is gap between wire cutters.excellent budget EDC but disappointed with wire cutters.
I underestimated the package opener cut myself lol…. It healed it up.
I work in construction bro it has never let me down
That’s great! I’m glad it works for you. I prefer something a bit more robust for my application.
How is it in long term use?
@@nmtoolsandgadgets4963 it's working great
@@nmtoolsandgadgets4963 you can find them in Walmart for 30 dollars
@@federicohernandez5191 nice tho too bad it's 80$ here in my country
That method works well for larger wire, but I haven’t found it to be very effective on smaller wire myself. Thank you for the recommendation though.
I wonder is it possible to replace this combo blade with a regular blade maybe off the Wave?
you can!
@@dank9288639 which knife option can I use to replace the combo blade? I reached out to Leatherman and they stated that it wasn’t an option…
@@The.Dude.Abides. off the wave! you can also do a light Google search and you will find other options to do so on the forums 👍
@@The.Dude.Abides. sidekick blade will work the best tho... it's been a while since I looked into it. but yeah man
@@dank9288639 I’ll have to look into that, thanks man! 👍
Unfortunately, I think the only blade that would work well would be the Sidekick blade.
I put a straight edge blade from the Sidekick on my Wingman. I’m not a fan of combo blades.
You and me both.
How did you do this??? I’d love to do the same.
What does the plus and minace sign mean
So disappointed in this product. I use this for military training explosives but it cant cut the crossmatch like the wave does. If the wave was spring loaded I'd like it the best.
I was never happy with the pliers (wire cutters) on this one
At 40 dollars your not going to get Wave, or Supertool functionality, quality.
It is surprisingly close though.
Im from the future leatherman are cloned now patients are up lol a good one is 30 bucks for a wave clone a leatherman wave plus is now 119 crazy stupid overpriced nice but costly 😮😊
Wave+ 💖👌
The plier stopper plate broke bothside of my Wingman, i have seen people having the same problem as mine...
Bad MT just dont buy it, doesnt live to its name...
Just stick with SURGE or either WAVE...
Sorry to hear that.
Thanks Ben, much appriciated.
BTW i had found few MT China made quite impresive ,how do I propose to you?
Pok Nyet you can email me at txtoolcrib@gmail.com
Why is it that MOST Leatherman all have the same tools. Wouldn’t it be better to add things like the package opener to the Wave Mk 2, or the Charge plus......... coz both of those are virtually the same !!! Mix it up abit !!! Leatherman is getting boring, they need to change around their tool design for once.
My wave sucks as bottle cap opener.
It leave a bit to be desired as a cap lifter. Makes a really good can opener though.
that stupid eye glass screw driver is shit, would love to have an awl instead. The leatherman free is a joke.
I have found with the Surge that I can get by without it. The awl is way more useful day to day.
Just fell asleep
Uncanny how you can type while you are asleep.
Yeah if they could put that skill on a multi tool the world would be a utopia! 😉
Your teview is way way too long
Then don’t watch.
It's a POS
I would replace the screwdrivers with a bit receiever if I could alter it current design. A new shaped one that fits mind you.
Oil it right out of the package or box btw; it tends to be shipped dry of any lube.
Good advice.
