(Ex)Hammer main here! A quick note to anyone interested in the light bowgun. The mine is NOT a trip mine. It goes off when attacked. This can be triggered by both monster attacks AND hunter attacks, meaning you should be shooting the mine anytime the monster is standing on it. You can also lodge the mine into a monsters body using a certain wire if skill, meaning any attack on the monster is likely to trigger the mine until it wears off.
...or if you see your Light Bowgun buddy jumping over the monster for some reason, it prolly means that you can do more damage on a certain spot. I should know, because I used to main Light Bowgun and jumped over the monster about 50 times a hunt. Now I'm a Heavy Bowgunner because I got sick of y'all not seeing me boost your damage.

Generally speaking Charge Mode: Strength (blue) has slightly longer charge times, forces you to move a bit more, and a bit more power but also more commitment/endlag and generally speaking fewer combo opportunities. Performing a charge switch from Strength will automatically put you into LV3 Standard, which will be amazing for some silkbinds or quick LV3 charges. The standard charge mode, on the other hand, has generally shorter charge times, a bit less damage and movement, but more combo opportunity - the spin attack ending with a golf swing, for example, if you get off the strongest swing, you can tap A to do a bonk that you can follow up into the Strength Charge LV3 without having to switch.
blue charge moving lvl 3 has been changed into one of the most useful attacks in terms of frame data and range, so if anything, yellow charge is more committal because it has the useless spin instead.
@@user-rn7wf7ry4s Spin is magnitudes better in this game; a lot easier to aim with it (which was always what threw people off with the move to begin with), but you can even combo straight into the A-attack's Big Bang finisher after hitting the spin's golf swing now. It's one of my favorite combos now, especially since if you go from blue to yellow mode, it'll instantly give you a level 3 charge too, easily setting you up for the spin
@@TheMoonman4 actually, it seems any finisher from the spin combos into big bang. bigger finishers take you into later parts of big bang. seems useful when wirebugs are on CD. however triple pound, charge, cancel to yellow, impact crater seems like a better option that takes about as much time.
My advise to all the new people out there when try out new weapon: focus on 1 thing at a time. Go to hunter’s notes and all the move set are there, but dont do all of them. Learn 1 combo and go hunt until you become good at it, then learn a new combo/move of the weapon and repeat the process.

@@poliwharaslah965 Rather, the true hunter doesn't _need_ a lock-on. It's absolutely convenient when fighting a single monster, but it can be troublesome against a group since focusing on one target can blind you to the others.

As someone who plays hammer a lot. You stay in Blue Hammer almost all the time. The attacks are generally better, but the main draw is if you need to do a quick impact crater (ZL+A silkbind move) you can switch back to Gold hammer, as switching from Blue > Gold will give you an instant level 3 charge, you swap back immediately after preforming the attsck.
For SnS users: Forward+a is shield bash. Up to 3 hits that can stun. You can use it after any X combo. You can press x+a during or after any combo to do a round slash. It does good damage if done at the end of a combo and can aim it at your side to help you reposition yourself mid combo. Also, down+a while guarding or during a combo does a backstep into your charge attack, in which you can let it go after fully charge for a charge slash, which will send you into the air, X for air attack, A for Shield dunk. If you press X during the charge attack, you’ll do a series of attacks, in which you need to time your X presses for max damage. After a shield uppercut, A for round slash, X for sword thrust that’ll send you to the air if connected. You can do the same as in the charge slash, but only here you can press x+a for a downwards multi hit thrust.

Switch axe has a neat thing you can do, you can morph out of wildswing with a circular sweeping attack instead of the slam. A,..., ZR, ZR/X. The second ZR will put you into sword mode, but if you press X instead, you'll go back into axe attacks. You can press A just the once, or multiple times, as long as it starts the wild swing and not the fade slash. It's pretty useful for if you started to wildswing, but then the monster moves a bit, or if you don't have time to pull off the full slam combo. It's better than the pseudo-slam you do if you haven't swung enough in my opinion. Just don't do it near somebody else. It covers a pretty large area, and you move forward while spinning. You shouldn't wildswing right next to somebody normally anyway, but be extra careful with this.
Little Info to add about Kinsects in the Full game: You can't upgrade specific stats individaully / can't upgrade your kinsect at all, BUT you can buy better Kinsects for money that have better stats depending on type. Those kinsects also get upgraded dependant on your Glaive
Context for people new to the series: In every previous game you had to upgrade your Kinsects, complete with their own upgrade tree. Rise replaced it with a simpler system where you just directly buy the Kinsects with no need for upgrading.
I kinda wish you *could* upgrade them instead of just buying different ones. I'd prefer to keep the healing buff of the two starter Kinsects but with the higher base stats of the others.

Quick tip for aspiring long sword players, you can charge spirit gauge and level it up with zr combo on dead monsters, small or large, also you have a shorter zr combo if you do a fade slash first.
The sword and shield also got pretty good upgrades. In worlds, the infinite light and heavy slash combos required you to move in the opposite direction to restart the combo. In Rise, after a X X A A combo you can press XA to do a round slash to restart the combo, allowing you to continue attacking in the same direction. The perfect rush in worlds required you to roll sideways to restart the combo. In Rise, simply tap A before the final stab to do a round slash, and you can immediately pull back the left stick and hold A to perform another charged slash into perfect rush.

For people want to try charge blade: everything changes once you get the switch skill, and then it basically becomes "try to stay alive while wielding axe all the time" (instead of charging the sword you can charge the axe making every swing have multiple hits when you hold the buttons and you don't need the powered up shield to do it but it goes away whenever you go out of axe mode also the axe can charge phials by itself and over a 1 minute period in the training area damage output was about 20-25% higher using the spinny axe instead of the glowy sword and yes this weapon is really not that hard)

@@josephspearman-oxx9404 Not sure about rise or world (mostly because I haven't played with anyone other than my friend) But it and horn have been the weakest weapons throughout the series. Gunlance does less damage in exchange for the shelling, which sounds good until you remember shelling does set damage, so its not that effective late game. Also it has the 2nd slowest movement speed a while unsheathed, next to greatsword which unlike gunlance, has more benefits when constantly sheathing. TL:DR You move slow and do low damage, Just remembered, in Rise speed can be patched with a skill you can unlock called Blast Dash. This is mostly based on OLD GEN information btw, as in before Monster Hunter World, I don't know how they've changed shelling for the new games.
@@orange7153 Low damage what? On World I could dish put heavy damage in a span of a few seconds, what was even better was when you embed the monster with huge wyvern stake damn near doubling your shelling damage on that spot. A Wyvern Fire blast there would easily do around 600 damage with max artillery if I remember correctly.
"Totally not even more stuff I'm leaving out" As he shows as amped element discharge which wast mentioned at all. But don't worry we totally believed that statement.
Bow is the best melee weapon in the game. One of the switch abilities makes it so you can do an attack dodge during a combo. But dodging counts as a combo. The dash attack applies the coatings doing often 2-4 times the damage of shooting. So you can infinitely dash attack WITH whatever element coating you got. The coatings never deplete if you only melee. PLUS you never have to worry about losing sharpness. And you can still shoot winged monsters out of the sky. Bow is best weapon this game prove me wrong.
SnS has a few more toys that I consider vital. For starters, the charging x+a attack (or draw your weapon while moving) gives you about 5 seconds of flinch free, so utilizing it often helps a ton in multiplayer, and I believe both options after the backhop also get this armor. Speaking of which, holding back + A during a combo will make you hop back. If held you charge into an attack where you leap at them, do a rising attack, and can then do a falling attack with your sword with x or shield with a. If instead you release a and hit x instead you'll do the perfect rush combo, where you have to time the next x hit with when you turn red. It does a lot of damage, has a multiplier to do even more elemental/status damage, and is finishes with the scaling slash from the charge version. Also you can get into it by "parrying" an attack with zr+a. Using both are fairly important to a stress free multiplayer experience. I try to backhop often to keep myself from getting tripped, and either do perfect rush if I feel I can land the full combo, or the charge if I feel I cannot.
I absolutely love this and introduce this video to any friend picking up Monster Hunter Rise for the first time. Do you think you could do one that covers Silkbind Attacks for each weapon as well, plus covering Sunbreak's new additions possibly? If you're able to break this down into Big Red Crayon, I think you'd do well for those as well.

So... Just gonna slip in right here... there *is* in fact a locking camera. Just go into your camera settings and select Focus Camera instead of Target Camera. Hope this helps at least a few people out there.
Watching footage of Monster Hunter without context, it looks like a generic action RPG. The game is incredibly in-depth and there's A LOT more going on than what the visuals will tell you. Most AAA games will make sure the visuals and interface is telling you the entire story, so that the game is easier to pick-up and play. Monster Hunter has evolved over the years to be more accesible (like the on-screen weapon actions in Worlds) and more expletive (like the damage numbers and monster status icons [top right]), but there's still a lot of nuance that doesn't translate well to footage, and you only get to experience playing it.
You're probably the only person online who actually acknowledges the gyro. As a splatoon player, they feel like they're objectively better than sticks for the bowguns/bow.
The only thing though is I miss embedding the monsters with a comically large stake and then it becomes a mini game of how many times can I explode on that spot or put bedbugs in it. If you do enough explosion damage, the thing gives off it's own explosion causing a knock down. GL is still pretty good, you should try it!
A tip for anyone using Switch Axe: If the monster isn’t knocked down or tired and moving around, try to get into the Amped state using Wild Swing when using your Elemental Discharge. This way, you’ll attach yourself to the monster and won’t risk missing the attack. If a monster is down, however, just go for a normal Elemental Discharge, as the extra time spent trying to get into the Amped state might give the monster enough time to get up and attack or run away.
The A button attack for dual blades is a distance closer move, good for when the enemy keeps backing away. In demon mode, you go twice as far (attacking the entire time). Something to keep in mind; the X+A combo ONLY works in demon mode and arc demon mode (though it lasts longer in demon mode). DO NOT SPAM THIS MOVE! It locks you in place for an extended amount of time, leaving you open for attacks.
Thanks, a minute and a half in you've explained more clearly than all other videos I've watched X+A simultaneously that was a big question for me and you clarified it. 👍
my gs playstyle over the past 2 days has gone from slow, big damage, easy to get hit to fast af and occasionally launching myself at a monster with a comically large sword
There actually is a true lock on setting. Not like hold down this button to focus the target like in Zelda, but if you go to Settings -> Camera -> scroll down to Camera Style and choose ‘Focus Camera’ it’ll keep you locked on to the monster when you press the right stick. You can then cycle through the list of monsters that are in the area, but will only lock on to them if they’re in range of the camera. Granted this means you have to press it multiple times in order to actually unlock your camera if you ever don’t want to be locked on at some point
This is everything I needed. I dont need maximum efficiency by knowing everything about a weapon from these other 30 vids out there. Just need to know what to do to hit monsters and win
1:02 "There's no true lock on like in Zelda games." There is, the option is in the camera options menu, you can set it to focus camera on the selected monster
For lance rather than a>a>a>hop a>a>a>zr+a quickly is better since it doesnt move you and keeps you in position to continue the combo. Hopping cam and up messing your positioning so not the best to do, also takes more time.

@@user-rn7wf7ry4s the spin is pretty solid with elemental damage
@@gerwin1133 and then you come back to reality and realize that you're playing hammer.

For SnS users:
Forward+a is shield bash.

With the switch axe when your tapping A on axe mode you can also press ZR to do a spin attack, press it one more time to combo it into sword mode

Step 1: spend a few years and get a PhD in it.
Now you know how to us the Charge Blade, your welcome.
I don’t have rise yet but these videos have finally got me back into world after putting it down after about 8 hours
I miss having access to both sides at the same time from World though. Not a huge fan of switch skills. Feels like they tried to nerf many or all weapons at the same time.
@@rositchi5889 To be honest, I barely touched MH since writing this comment. I recently came back to it and it does definitely feel nerfed.
TL:DR You move slow and do low damage,
Just remembered, in Rise speed can be patched with a skill you can unlock called Blast Dash.

As a charge blade main, I came here specifically to see him explain switch axe and charge blade
not a bad explanation, now it only needs to explain everything else :)
The only way to truly play bow is 2 ft from the monster at all times.
Bow - best melee weapon.
This already feels wrong

I'm a veteran, but reloading your axe still gets a chuckle out of me. god i love this series x3
I love how the Hunter now says reloading and I bet everyone else is like what? That's an axe lol.
Another reason to do the sword charge-up in Charge Blade: It makes it so you won't bounce anymore.
You'd only want that with a male character
You're probably the only person online who actually acknowledges the gyro. As a splatoon player, they feel like they're objectively better than sticks for the bowguns/bow.
man, the bedbugs attack is really making me want to play the gunlance
Lol
And some gunlances can KO monsters with the bed bugs. Join the BOOM crew!
The only thing though is I miss embedding the monsters with a comically large stake and then it becomes a mini game of how many times can I explode on that spot or put bedbugs in it. If you do enough explosion damage, the thing gives off it's own explosion causing a knock down. GL is still pretty good, you should try it!
ive been jumping off the dog into a greatsword slash so much, i had no clue you could charge that attack too. this changes everything
While this is old, it's the first thing that's made me understand Switchaxe better, and I'm tempted to try it now, thank you!
