    Incredibly useful workflow that honestly should already be a base feature in the Curves WB. Excellent video, Mango.

      Thank you. There is another video coming soon regarding sketch on surface which was a patreon video which I will be releasing soon regarding seamless patterns on curve surfaces and tracing a reference image. It may help you with your issue your having regarding b splines.

    I watched this video several times and matched each step on my own computer. But at the end when I tried to extrude the text on curved surface, I got an error: ... because shape is not on a plane.

    Like others asked, is there a way to pad or pocket this string after projecting it on the surface?

    I was wondering if you could do a video on FEM analysis of a pressure vessel. lets say a simple LPG cylinder. i have tried but for some reason it will not work. I am designing a vertical boiler for a small steam loco for another youtube content creator and thought, i would ask the question. HP295 steel used of course.

  • @specialservicesequipment393
    @specialservicesequipment393 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ok, so that worked. I was able to map some text onto the surface of a cylinder. I cannot get FreeCAD to let me pocket or boolean difference the letters into the surface or extrude them above. Must be missing something somewhere on this. I'll go back and look at the other video about mapping objects onto the surface, see if I can find the issue.

    i'm trying to put some embossed text on a tube.. My problem is that the when I create the construction box in Curves, it is in a different axis than the text. The text should run across the longitudinal axis of the tube, but the construction box is perpendicular to it, so I had to do several transforms of the text to get the it in the same plane as the construction box. The positioning on the tube is ok. It shows that it should wrap in the correct orientation. Anyway, after doing the transforms and selecting the text to be mapped, nothing happens. Any thoughts?

    Hey, thanks a lot for the instructions!
    Maybe a "dummy" question: how do I design that nicely curved base that you use to project the string 🤔?
    Thanks, have a nice day!

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No question is a dummy question, it's only easy when you know how. 😊 Sketch a half moon shape and then extrude the sketch.

    That was a great video - but when I tried to print a piece, the letters didn't appear. Do you have a video on how to raise the letters? I am trying to put raised letters on the side of a coin-like object. Thanks.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  ปีที่แล้ว

      When you exported the model did the letters get exported with it? It almost sounds like the letters were not fused with the base object.

    • @SouthernMetal
      @SouthernMetal ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MangoJellySolutions that might the the problem. When I view the .stl file in my slicer app, I don't see the lettering. But I do see the ShapeString letters flat on the surface (I exported the ShapeString as well). I am watching all of your how-to videos on FreeCad from the beginning - and I appreciate all of the work you did in creating the videos.

      @@SouthernMetal Sounds like you haven't got a thickness on the sketch_on_surface. Fill extrusion = true, fill faces = true and a thickness of your choice start with 1 or 2 first. Thank you, glad your enjoying :)

    is it possible to emboss the text using this method rather than raise it?

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, so if you use a minus figure on the extrude then you can use a boolean cut.

  • @stevelongton2992
    @stevelongton2992 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've used this process now on different applications. However, one area it won't work for me is if you are projecting the text on a swept surface. I.e the surfaced is curved in both the X, Y and Z plains. The text lays perfectly against the surface but when you attempt to give the "Sketch on surface" some depth a small exclamation mark appears and the text has no volume and cannot be Fused to the curved surface. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is another way without using the Curves workbench that may help you achieve what your trying to do. But I will try to explain it here. Take your text and your loft. Place the text under the loft and Extrude it through. Use a boolean intersection operation. This will leave the faces of the text in contour of the loft which you can extrude. If that doesn't make any sense (pretty hard to explain so more than likely not lol) hold on for a day or so and I will upload a video.

    • @stevelongton2992
      @stevelongton2992 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MangoJellySolutions Just doesn't seem to work, as soon as the text is mapped to the sweep the extrusion either doesn't carry across or the system doesn't see them as solids, therefore they cannot be boolean together.

  • @Tom-hg9lw

    Is ist possible to engrave the Text?
    If I type a negativ number in "thikness" it won't work

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a setting called offset. Which will offset the text. Try that with a negative value.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh and if you haven't worked it out yet you will need to creat a boolean cut between the original object and the text using the part workbench.

  • @SLCompulsion

    I've got the text mapped corrrectly I think but when I try to extrude, I get "18:11:41 Wires are not coplanar.
    18:11:41 Recompute failed! Please check report view." Can you show in your example how to extrude the text on the face?

    • @SLCompulsion
      @SLCompulsion ปีที่แล้ว

      I figured out thanks to your other video; "Sketch on Curved Surface / Faces in Curves workbench. Celtic Ring / Jewellery 3D Printing". The key was under: 'Sketch_On_Surface/Settings/Fill Faces' and setting that to true. Was that was true, I could extrude. Now I'm trying to set the "Taper Angle" but that is failing for some known reason. I'm trying to make a sand casting pattern and the lettering needs a negative draft angle.

    Strange thing, must be an issue with my FreeCAD. I was able to get everything to work once, when I tried to recreate it I had no problems drawing objects and pocketing them onto the surface of a curved plane, or a cylinder or such. When I try to do the text again, it will not map it properly to the curved surface.

    • @MangoJellySolutions
      @MangoJellySolutions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm strange, when you say not mapped correctly, can you describe what you are seeing.

    • @specialservicesequipment393
      @specialservicesequipment393 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MangoJellySolutions Trying to find a way to properly describe it, the object in sketcher will map properly to the curves and everything. When I go to draft workbench to put the text in, I cannot get it to fit the curve of the shape at all, they stay flat. I checked to be sure that the shapestring is entered in the properties like you showed as well. The other issue is getting the draft workbench to even work sometimes, it will stay greyed out and not let me use it.

    Hi! I'm so sorry I can't follow your awesome videos. My time is occupied by learning micro controllers, so I stopped watching FC content. I keep adding your videos to my watch later and ill binge them one weekend. Btw, if you want I can make a banner for you as well, based on any artistic or creative direction or choices you may have, as a sign of gratitude for helping us out with your wonderful videos. May be make changes to the logo if you want. I can't promise any hard dead line, but I will try my best to get it done as soon as possible.
    Once again, I'm really sorry I cant follow your videos as they are uploaded. Hope you are having a great day and my best wishes to you and your family! Cheers!

      Mate that is absolutely fine, we all have our own lives and other interests and I know how complex microcontroller programming can be. I am honoured that you took time to write this post and still want to folow the videos. I do have plans for the graphic you created. I am moving house and I will be able to have my own little office. At the moment all my videos are done from the kitchen table as I have no room. I should be able to have a dedicates setup if all goes well and I get to move, so your graphic is going to be used in some way in my new office. Thinking about making it into a neon light. Do you do graphic logo design as your good at it! Thank you by the way.
