VW ID. Buzz: WORLD EXCLUSIVE FIRST DRIVE! - Why It’s Our Electric Car of the Year | Top Gear

  • There’s a real cough buzz around VW’s EV comeback kid. We’re the first to drive a production-ready version, so we thought why not stage our very own BugJam and show it to people who really know their vans. Time to introduce it to the ancestors and ask the real camper fans what they think...

      Well 200 hp for a van in today’s market is terrible so I’m not surprised they didn’t bring it up. And this was a paid ad not a review to be clear. TopGear has no integrity just like most corporate automotive journalist and they never have.

      @@dustinstorey6779 they will be offering a two motor-AWD version as well. Keep in mind, torque is equally as important and like most low HP diesel engines, you don’t need allot of HP to get these moving. All in all, it’s a good start and will sell very well in Canada.

      I can - there are some elements of these (and SUVs) that make them an absolute pain to share the road with. One is that it’s almost impossible to see what’s going on in front or to the side of them (at junctions), the second is that many owners of these sorts of cars seem to develop an assurance that their cars are bullet proof and indestructible and every one else should just get out of their way. Having said that, having something like this to explore in would be lovely.

    imagine having two layers of solar panels on the roof where you can shift one layer to the side of the buzz to use it as a roof too. you could generate some nice electricity to drive your utilities and charge your battery a bit too. 2kWp peak could be possible easy.
    for now the 77kWh battery is a bit small for long trips, because realistically you get close to 30kWh per 100km at 130km/h.
    but with the bigger battery in the area of 95kWh that comes 2023, 300km range is not an issue. if you are easy on the pedal, 350km should be no problem.
    however, all the MEB batteries now - up to 77kWh - can be replaced by LFP batteries in the next years with makes them much cheaper. but so far, the new 95kWh battery cannot be replaced by LFP soon because LFP does not have the higher energy density of the NMC cells so far. that will result in a significant high markup for the bigger battery. but who knows what the future holds. CATL is known for their 160Wh/kg LFP battery but Gotion pushed it to 230Wh/kg already. If they could push the density to 260Wh/kg, then they could even replace the 2023 NMC 95kWh cells.
    Btw. VW holds the majority of Gotion. But their battery factory in Salzgitter will start production in 2026, that is very late!!!

    You are right, it is not all about sportiness and how fast it goes, but about the so called carbon footprint to manufacture them and where the electricity is going to come from to charge them. will take a few years for the price to come down. the battery development still makes big steps in the right direction. but demand is so crazy high that this year the prices got up because of insane price rises on raw materials like lithium, nickel, cobalt.

    I'd like to drive this rather than an SUV for sure.
    But they're also correct when they say it's a tad small for a convert.
    But I am a little curious about the seat/rail system. Is it compatible with the multivan accessories? And wouldn't it be cool if the converts could use it, so it'll just be a days work to go from camper to luxury minibus?
    Anyway, as some of the converters also mention, it would be amazing if you could tap into the large battery.
    But it would need a powerstop, so you can at least go 30-50 km or so, driving gently. So you don't get stuck in the middle of nowhere, just because you enjoy the aircon a bit too much.
    I'll certainly be keeping an eye on the buzz.
    Edit: it will be in competition with ElectricBrands little bus. 600 km with the largest battery will be difficult. But better when it comes to top speed and comfort.

    I think people forget most charging will be done at home not out and about, and the charging infrastructure is actually quite good, i've drove from Edinburgh to Colchester on numerous occasions with my electric car and also from Edinburgh to Bath and all the way down to Cornwall with no charging issues. And no it doesn't take three days to charge it it takes 30 minutes on a rapid charger and only nine hours or through the night when you're sleeping at home.

    "it's not for me, I'm a dinosaur, I like the sound of engines"
    You can never satisfy everyone,for years we heard people complaining about cars getting more and more complicated and hard to repair if anything goes wrong and now electric cars are here with a very simple and small engine with no maintenance,no gearbox, no DPF,you can charge them at home and so on and people are complaining about other things. I know that electric cars are not perfect,the infrastructure is still lacking but like all things more EV's on the road,more charging places will follow

    • @ShmuelWeintraub
      @ShmuelWeintraub 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very true. No car is intended for "everyone" though. I like this van and, if they make a version I can actually afford, I will buy one. The thing non EV people should keep in mind is that the extra expense up front is offset by the 70-90% savings on fuel costs each year. That matters. And the more you drive them, the more you save.

    • @seybertooth9282
      @seybertooth9282 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1
