  • Greazy sets up an experiment to get tight drums in a big room. Using Gobos to block off the drum set can be a great way to eliminate the room sound while still allowing sound pressure to escape and preventing the build up of low end.

Did you have any issues with breathing with the dust off of the Burlap dividers? I tried using that stuff and it almost killed me. Yet, I had been in studios that Burlap on the walls and it didn't bother me. What is up? I had to take mine down and put up linen.

I would happily but they’re only a few seconds long each. Kind of a waste of time

That sounds really good. Are those gobos just extra thick rockwool, or two layers? Thinking of building a couple now.

That’s it. Just rockwool in the middle with a wooden frame

What's the word on those Muro AC-7's? I've seen them popping up a bit recently. I'm looking to add a small diaphragm pair mainly for OH, maybe some strings and occasional acoustic.

I think they’re pretty good sounding. I have a few pairs so I’m trying them on different things

Hey Greazy, I'm gonna be moving my setup to a new place after I finish out grad school and had a question that you could maybe offer some direction on if you have a second:
The new space is a second floor, no door between the first and second floor of the house. I'm wondering if you had any thoughts about the best way to isolate drums in that kind of environment to minimize bleed into the other parts of the house. I was thinking maybe putting them on a slight platform full of rockwool and getting one of those drum isolation shields, but wasn't sure if this would work. Any advice?

Honestly, you have almost no chance of actually soundproofing your place unless you completely build a room in a room with airgaps and green glue sandwiched between drywall. The things you said might help a little but I predict annoyed housemates eventually

That's kinda what I figured - thank you so much nonetheless for the reply. Congrats again on the grammy! That album fucks hard man

Try putting the drum kit outside. Lots of Rock bands have done that.

who? and what do you do about wind
      this sounds cool

I think it is not uncommon. It MIGHT have been the Foo Fighters. I remember the song was a big hit. It just means that you add the ambiance (reverb etc) digitally... OR NOT. This was for giant drum sounds. The drummer can just be wide open. There is a video online where they are breaking down a mix, not just the drums. It was a big drum sound. I don't think the wind is ever an issue. Led Zeppelin recorded an entire album outside. A plane was an issue there at one point. It is more common than you think. I record stand up bass facing into the open canyon through an open sliding glass door here (at night (no traffic)) otherwise the room will saturate. I am in the mountains. Drums need a lot of space to breath, otherwise you will end up playing softer than you would like. It is usually the loading dock or something. You don't do it on a windy day is all. You know, good recording studios are all about "Live End" / "Dead End" and how to make use of these for what you are recording.
(Dude is that really your face? You are going to scare the children looking like that. )
