Amazing that you can add that much intense compression without the cymbals and hi hats becoming harsh! Their level comes up of course, but they remain so smooth. Must be beautifully recorded, well done!
I rarely think of 1176-style comps being used for mastering, HOWEVER, I believe Brian Lucey actually has one in his chain! I think I remember him writing about it's "transient rounding" ability.
I'm sorry to hear that. Scams hurt. When you're back oin action, this box does deliver nice, useable sonics for a fair price. Others do as well, but I've been pleased with the SFE so far.
@@davidpetersmusic The external sidechains and mix knob have become so essential, it's truly an ideal stereo compressor for my needs. Thank you for this excellent demo!

1:44 It looks like the Blend button is about to come off, the button is shaking when you turn it. What is that about? At least the other buttons seemed to be attached to the device. SFE sounds nice overall, i like those harmonics, they really bring out the 3K-4K and up.
@@davidpetersmusic You mention that, and I did notice the harmonics button here being a "brighten your sound" button. The hats / cymbals / metallic sounding percussion jumped out and sparkled with it engaged. Do other compressors focus on different bands? Like a "bass is now front and center" compressor?
Hi … it would be Interesting to hear a A to B comparison between your UTA UnFairchild Hardware Unit and the UTA UnFairchild Plugin 👍🥳 … thx a lot to you for your vids 👍🤗🤗🤗
@@darkstar.runner6669 Thats a great idea. But… I sold the UnFairchild! There’s now a POM Fairchild here. I was after the sound of the original transformers. I can compare those maybe?
thank you for the video! the non-lin reminds me of the level-Or, which is otherwise a pretty unique sound. would love to hear some of your other hardware compressors on drums. some side by side comparisons would be ace. and do bother to level match please and thank you!
It's a fantastic console for the money. Clean and warm, simple, no external power supplies, low maintenance, etc. I use it on larger tracking days, especially on drums, and occasionally to sum during mixing, which adds something.
Nice video and overstayer collection. I „only“ own the overstayer modular channel. Do you feel the SFE adds something you do not get with the modular channel?
It's a FET compressor instead of a VCA, so the vibe is a bit different. It's also very simple, which can be nice sometimes. The use the modular channel when tracking or trying to make something interesting. I like the SFE for daily standard stuff.
@@davidpetersmusic I have the old one but it's just that sort of rare piece where you don't find much information about it and also the form factor changing I was wondering if it was similar or not.
Brother, you say 1176 and 1178 like I have the first clue what that means. I'm just a rookie, looking to learn about compressors, and how folks are using them. I certainly do appreciate the examples you gave, and the demonstration! Sounds like one could really mangle AND corral some sounds with this unit. Cheers, and merci
Thanks for checking out the video! The 1176 is probably the most famous and well-known audio compressor ever made. If you don't know it now, you will soon. 🙂 Welcome to the world of music production!
Hey! Great video! Could you consider doing a video on using external side chains with analog compressors, and different techniques/approaches etc. I think it would be a cool video, and one Id love to see.
Dang that sounds nice! I'm constantly amazed about how just applying compressor can give tracks punch and a bit more presence.
This is why we love them! This box in particular with the added harmonics brings out that presence.
@ One day I might be able to procure those kind of hardware comps. That POM PYE one is still my fav in your rack.
It's now living with the drummer from this video!
@@davidpetersmusic Lucky drummer!

Killer unit. Thank you for your video. Your demo work is EXCELLENT!
Awe man, thanks!
Beautiful! Thanks for the video!
It's not that well known, but it really does a fantastic job!
I've owned one since 2016 and it's been on my drum buss for most (if not all) of my mixes since then. Terrific sound and value for money.
Yes, the "bang for the buck" factor is real with this one!
Great video! Would love a studio tour. And a separete video for the console! Thanks!
Updated studio tour coming soon! The one on the channel now is from 2018 and much has changed.
I see you have an Overstayer Modular channel. Can you demo this? Not a lot of information out there on it.
That might be a great idea, though I thought there were a few videos on it out there already. I'll definitely look into it! It's a fun box.
A proper demo of the POM PYE would be much appreciated!
The overstayer sounds awesome.
Coming soon!
nice. would be interested to hear this on a few different mixes. seems like its versatile enough for mastering.

I'm glad that I'm a subscriber! I didn't know that Overstayer made anything else.
They've got several cool boxes!
I lost a lot of money in a scam last year but this is one of the first hardware compressors I would buy when I get my head back out of water.

I noticed that when watching back as well. The set screw needs to be tightened up. The post itself is solid.

Quite beastly.
damn that sounds incredible!
I'd say thanks, but I think the box gets the credit. 😎
Just watched your video on the POM Pye compressor, totally different feel compared to the Overstayer. Thanks for the demo!

It’s been living on drums so I haven’t tried it there much yet! Something else is handling guitars at the moment. It’s still pretty new to me.
