Despite not being a machinist I really enjoy your videos. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into the visual aspects of showing what you’re doing on a job. I also really appreciate the care you take in describing not only what you are doing, but why you do it. For me, this is the best part. I know you could all kinds of technical jargon, but you don’t, and. I can pretty much follow what is happening and why. While just seeing a quick time-lapse and finished product of what someone has done is nice, I don’t find them as rewarding.
    Great work. Thank you.
    Cheers

As a former engineer for centrifuge and bearing companies, I am happy to see you using the correct tolerances for that part. Too many machinists use rules of thumb instead of taking a couple minutes to actually look up the proper tolerance as it appears you did. One nitpick, it doesn’t appear you verified the runout of the part after the spray welding to make sure the shaft end did not warp from the heat. The runout tolerance of the side facing the chuck relative to the bearing seat is highly critical for machines that run at the speed these do. That is the reason an end user I also worked for would not allow spray welding on parts like these unless it was done by the factory repair shop.

2.756 inch is a 70.01mm for metric guys .01 is a perfect fit in most cases for a bearing on shafts ,you can go +0.02 or 0.03 but anything more that that and bearing starts to rub. From experience commonly used bearings arent that sensitive that you have to get a micron(.001) tolerance.
Unless you are dealing with high speed bearings that have play in it for expanding due heat.
That spray welder is a nice thing for repairs like this thats for sure !
When you see a groove in the shaft like that in 99% its where seal is rubbing off ,other 1% is that something got in and made that groove. You would be surprised what left chip or a something soft like nylon rope does to a shaft.

As always Adam a great informational video. As an old retired engineer could I suggest something to help you out? When your using the Spraying kit, even power tools or welding torches. Just put the feed lines, cables or tubes over your right shoulder (as you are right handed). The lines (cables or feeds) will then follow your arm / hand. You will find this is far more comfortable, gives you better movement and control. It also stops any pulling on the lines as you work as the tension is on your shoulder not the hand or tool in use. Happy New Year to you both. From us in Sicily, but from England. Work Safe mate. Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

Nice hit on the tolerances, as a millwright we would always run into tight fits because of the machinist working to the top of the tolerance. I used to persuade them to ease it a bit more when you are working on a crane repair job 50 feet up and struggling with the likes of couplings and bearings and gears. It sure shows how good a machinist is when you ask for those very small differentials. Nice repair Adam, that spray welding is very interesting process. Out my way there is only one outfit I know of that does the same process. Power to you, cheers!

Adam, always great to see new content. Love seeing the spray welding! As an aside, I wanted to pass something on to you. I've been watching another TH-camr from Amarillo, TX, Precision Transmissions. It's amazing to see how quickly Richard can disassemble a transmission. Anyway, he's mentioned several times about how he's starting to have trouble getting a particular bushing for his transmission rebuilds. He's been concerned that he's going to have to get complete assemblies in order to replace a bushing. I thought that it might be something that you might be able to make for him, so that he wouldn't have to get more expensive parts in order to get the one part he needs. Thought if it worked out, it might make for a regular project for you. Just a thought. Keep up the fantastic work!
