I am 72 years old and I would love to see you do a video on skincare for 70+ individuals. So many do them for 30-40-50's and that leaves out all of the baby boomers who are still wanting to look their best. Please consider doing more for those that are older seniors (60-70-80's). I like you videos and thank you for your consideration.
a jar of nivea cream, blue glass jar, or cer've cream large jar, and cerave facial cleanser bjs hasvit cheapest under $ 25 ,and vitimin B conplex 3xs a week along with daily multi vitimin, & vitD... drink water,

Hey Pamela! It depends on where your skin is now! What are your goals? What do you use currently? I’m a licensed esthetician so when choosing products it’s important to know if your skin is smooth or dry, congested etc
I think what a lot of people commenting fail to realize is what works for YOU will not work for everyone. Personally I have HORRIBLE reactions to Cerave, others love it. You can’t just list off products that YOU like. Not everyone has your skin. As for OP, while age is a factor what’s more important is your skin type, what you’d like to accomplish and what your main concerns are. In general as people age the skin gets drier and thinner. Collagen production drops (which isn’t something that can be replaced topically) as well as cell turnover. The only product that every single person needs is SPF outside of that it’s very dependent on skin type/concerns
Eye cream is 100% necessary regular moisturizer is not supposed to go around the eye area because the skin is different there and using regular moisturizer can give you millia
thank you for saying that not everyone needs a moistrizer, that is so rare to hear. My skin was always perfectly fine without using a moistrizer, but since everyone (including a lot of derms) in the skincare community keeps stressing on how essential moistrizer is, I started trying out so many moistrizers, and every one of them either break me out or made my skin worse in some way. Whenever I stopped using moistrizers, my skin gets better. I used to be so confused, now that I hear it from a specialist, I feel much better, thanks.
For the longest time (before age 50), I found that moisturizers just excarbated my rosacea and acne prone skin. Someone advised me that I needed hydration ... And indeed they were right ... Once I found hydrators that worked for me, my skin could finally tolerate (and actually needed) a moisturizer. Now many years later, with my sensitive and dry skin can only tolerate a few moisturizers work without causing irritation and rosacea-related breakouts.
You need a moisturiser in the sense that u need hydration, mostly oily skin can get away with lack of occlusives and emollients. Just hydrating ingredients like aloe gel, glycerin or hyaluronic acid serum are enough
Same. Now as a rest of using actives, toners, serums etc. I fucked up my skin and have to deal with Rosacea, and fungal acne… and prior to this I had combination sensitive skin, and never used anything on my face including moisturizer and sunscreen.
Your skin gets dryer as you age. My boyfriend doesn’t use anything either cause he is a noob to skincare, and he’s fine. I think most people were fine until our skin barrier gets weaken. For me, it was trying out many skincare products (being a noob also and not knowing my skin type) that sensitized my skin. The seasonal weather also made my skin terrible, and when I lived back in my hometown, my skin rarely broke out.
For most of my life I didn't need (or use) a moisturizer, and I had very good skin. Two things have changed that: 1. I'm using a retinoid now, and that makes my skin a little dry. 2. I live in a place with very cold winters, and my skin is dry in winter, with the heat and ultra low humidity. So, every evening I evaluate my skin, and I use a moisturizer if I think I need one.
This is the gentle reminder I need. I'm currently in a skin-product buying frenzy, trying to solve multiple problems at once! But really, I'm at a point where I need simple, gentle, targeted, and PROVEN skincare. There are just so many more products and so much more social media now -- it's easy to get swept up in excess. Also, some of us might need in-office treatments vs topicals, so that's worth considering. Thanks for the video Dr Ellis.
I’ve been guilty of hopping from active to active and product to product because there are so many great things out there to try. However, after starting Tretinoin I was forced to simplify my routine. It’s more effective and it’s saving me money! (Part of me still has some FOMO though)
This video is SO necessary. Since finding your channel and following your advice, cutting down on the products I use and building a solid, simple routine, my skin has improved so much. Thank you lady 💚
So authentic and her no nonsense approach is refreshing. Most derms generally gravitate towards promoting their own agenda & products. Her genuineness and knowledge is spot on 👍🏼
I have a simple routine: cleanse, tone and moisturise. Adding a toner to my routine made a world of difference. I use Paula's chioce pore reducing toner...love it. I don't believe pores can be reduced though, however it has helped control break out for me.
I use that toner too. I feel like some toners dont have exfoliant in them though. Those are the ones I def dont need. But that Paulas stuff has helped my acne a lot.
I use toner as well. My sister introduced me to it years back and this is what got me hooked: I had just finished my shower and I was about to apply my moisturizer and she told me to try the toner (I had acne back then); once I used the toner, not only did I FEEL my face cleaner, but the cotton pad was really dark, meaning my face was still full of dirt even AFTER my shower. I was like holy cow. Now I use toner as a routine and yep, it definitely has helped with the acne. It doesn't reduce pores, but idc as long as it's clean. Also, CeraVe brand works really well. ALSO I do exfoliate in the shower...it does strip away old skin cells. I ran out of exfoliator once, so I didn't have some for a week. I showered w/out it and my face still felt dirty, kinda like bumpy but not really (idk how to describe it), and that's b/c the old skin cells weren't being washed away. Felt so much better once I exfoliated. I introduced it to that same sister a few months ago and she loved it. She said her skin feels so much softer. I'm glad it works for both of us, but I understand that it may not work for everyone.
I also find that a minimal skincare routine works best for me. I have sensitive skin and I didn't know this until I started really getting into skincare and added too many products to my routine. It damaged my barrier badly. I've gone back to a simple routine and my skin is thriving now. I stuck to just using a cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen and my skin loved it. Recently, I added the cosrx snail mucin before moisturizing and that has done wonders for my skin too. It has made my skin looks more even in tone, smoothed the texture and it has actually reduced how oily my t-zone gets which I don't think is a typical benefit of snail mucin. I've also noticed that high ph cleansers work better for my skin than low ph. I found most low ph cleansers to not clean my skin well enough. I haven't experienced irritation from high ph cleansers either, so I think it's best to just be intuitive with your skin and use what works for you.
I have extremely oily skin and started with the cosrx snail mucin and found that my oil reduced dramatically. I think its because its very hydrating without adding oil and a lot of us with oily skin are dehydrated which encourages our skin to produce more oil.
Your TH-cam channel is so helpful. I spent 3 hours watching the bulk of your videos! I'd love to see a video on hair-loss and how to prevent it - minoxidil, ketaconazole LLLT etc. Thank you!
@@DrSamEllis I am sorry I missed your webinar on hair loss. Do you have a schedule for upcoming webinars? I would love to attend your webinars. I have a burning question on prescription Tretinoin. Is Tretinoin equally effective as when mixed with another active such as Niacinemide? I would be extremely grateful for a response. Congratulations on your pregnancy, wonderful blessing. I am a mama of a 22 year old and it’s my biggest blessing. Thank you for all the honest information you provide . Please move to southern CA 🥰🙏🏼
Can shampoos add to hair loss? I have white hair and use a “commercial” whitening or anti-yellowing shampoo. I have noticed hair loss. I do not know if this is caused due to aging OR the shampoo!!
I have 2 things in my routine that never change, a 2% BHA toner in the morning and a 0,05% tretinoin cream at night. I always use an SPF 30 (that strength gives me less eye-burning) like Hawaiian Tropic. Other than that I use cleanser and face cream and they vary a bit. Haven't found favorites for those yet and I make my own skin creams so I like to try different things. I have a very minimalistic routine and it works for me. I don't have the time or energy for long routines. Thank you for a good, informative video. I agree with every point you make.
Hi Dr. Sam, I'm 62, and for me, Retin-A has been a lifesaver since my 20s. I only stopped when I was pregnant or nursing. Definitely sunscreen on a daily basis. Vitamin C with ferulic acid, a gentle cleanser, and a moisturizer for dry skin. No scrubs, toners, masks, or essences. I've only started in the last 4 yrs getting Dysport for my crows feet (I have no wrinkles on my forehead), and once a year, lip injections. The last time was with Kysse. I had been using Juvederm Ultra XC. Only a small amount. I don't want to look like a duck. I hope you are feeling well. A tip for morning sickness - keep a bag of pretzels by your bedside. Grab one before you even get out of bed. It definitely works. Thank you so much for your advice. ❤❤
Thank you! I was happy to see that I generally don’t incorporate the products you mentioned. The only exceptions for me are 1)a Korean essence with urea that my skin loves and is great under my tinted sunscreens when I need a little more hydration. 2) Again Urea in an inexpensive Korean eye cream- My undereyes were still so crepey, flakey and dry even putting my moisturizer under my eye and this eye cream has eliminated the problem. I have rosacea and I could use a moisturizer with urea that could eliminate these products but I find that ceramides really help improve my skin barrier.
Hi, Dr. Ellis! I just happened upon your channel via other channels. For about ten years - from 2009 to 2019 - I used a very expensive skincare line that TORE UP my skin. Not only did almost every product contain both alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids, I was trying to remedy my acne issue. After several in-salon facial treatments which made my skin worse, in combination with the product line I was using, I finally went to a dermatologist and was prescribed a topical treatment. That was eight years ago, and I pretty much use the topical treatment as weekly-biweekly maintenance. I also changed my skincare line to an AI skincare product line, which I have been using since 2019. I also have a very minimalist approach to skincare. I no longer use: toners, manual scrubs, and eye creams. Instead, I use a cleanser, a day cream, sunscreen and night cream. The biggest change I have made is daily use of sunscreen.Thank you for your channel!
I love la roche possey’s retinal eye cream as it has eliminated many fine lines it I still have to baste my under eye with either shea butter or Vaseline . I am 57years old
I've lost my Sephora Rouge status since I've been buying drug store brands that I love. Finally, at almost 50 y.o., I have good skin. Hope you're feeling well!
I can relate 🌸I used to buy expensive products before doing my research and now I know those products had with minimal key ingredients- SPF, Retan A, quality moisturizers.
Oh my!…ME TOO!! I’ve been transitioning to all “drug store”(MUCH LESS EXPENSIVE, but QUALITY) products since March 2020…now all my expensive products are gone and I am seeing better results!! I watched The Budget Dermatologist on TH-cam and she really spoke to ME. Done with the hype and trendy.. no more empty promises and wallet💸! No more Rouge status… but what I am gaining is so much better!! I’m happy for you…I’m happy for US!🎉
Im the completely the opposite! As I've gotten older (almost 47), I've had to completely move away from drugstore brands and products. I just can't find any drugstore products that don't bother my skin in some way (and trust me, I'VE TRIED!).
No sponsored video, yay. Thank you for not making this a sponsored. I only watch dermatologist TH-cam video's when it comes to skin advice, but it seems like lately alot of them are only doing video's when sponsored and only recommending their sponsors product's. Thank you : )
I do micro needling once a month in a conservative way. I use .05 with a good quality roller that I clean with alcohol before and after. I love how my skin looks healthier after the treatment. Thank you! Great video.
The one you’re forgetting is genes. Sure, sleep and hydration helps, vitamin E cream isn’t bad in any way, but some people get lucky and some don’t. All this skincare advice is to just optimise your chances, get the best result you can personally get. Two people will never have the same skin even if they use the exact same products. Even in my friend group in our twenties, one has never used any skincare because she just doesn’t need it, her skin is fine, but another has had to start using skincare and even getting prescription creams because she has skin issues. In the same way you might not need anything if you’re not seeing signs of aging, but someone else might be seeing fine lines in their thirties and want to start a skincare routine. Also, your situation might change. My sister is in her forties and was doing everything wrong before, tanning, not using sunscreen, not washing off makeup, but she was just lucky with her skin, it looked fine despite all that. A few years ago reality hit her and she started getting dark spots so she started using sunscreen on her face and reversed the dark spots.
I'm Korean and have been always interested in skincare, however, no one I know do the 10 step routine.. at least not everyday, not all at the same time.. I try sheet masks, different serums/essences, and etc. from time to time, not because I need them, but because I'm bored with the basic skincare products! I don't use anything too harsh on my skin, but I like trying new/different products once in a while for the sake of "experiencing".
Both essence and sheet masks helped my dry and sensitive skin a lot. So true that every skin is different. Not going to get rid of skincare that works for me :).
You're so articulate and have confirmed what I've heard from other Dermatologists. I do enjoy the Nuface for giving a temporary lift to my brows and my red light device for glow. Thank you and have a great week!
I don´t use any of these. Just cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen when going outside. I have tried eyecreams in the past but they are never hydrating enough . Glad you confirm me I don´t need them 😀
Yes, focus on the ingredients necessary for your skin concerns, not a product type. I do use an acidic toner but not just to have a toner to feel I need one to complete my routine. That is my daily exfoliation which could also be achieved with an acidic cleanser, serum, or moisturizer. I just like the toner best for this. I don't use a serum because the only one that would benefit me is vitamin c and what vitamin c does I already get from using the acidic toner and tretinoin. The vitamin c would be redundant and potentially irritating. If you try to use every active ingredient some may be overlapping, not adding any extra benefit, and may just cause sensitivity.
Excellent information - so much of this is common sense. We tend to live in a culture of "more is better", and so often that simply is not the case. Love your channel - thank you!
Thanks for sharing! I just turned 30 and have always had a pretty minimal skincare routine (general cleanser in pm, lotion am/pm, and sunscreen (when I remember) and retinol in pm) and then just started to get hyrdafacials every 3-4 months. I feel like even though the cost of hydrafacials are higher than things I could buy at sephora but finding this thing that works is worth it to me. :)
Good Morning Beautiful ☀️☕️ I absolutely love your channel. I am a new subscriber. I was a sun worshiper for most of my life because of ACNE! Even after my skin was clear! I had basal cell carcinoma on my nose and it was a huge hole after MOHS. Thank God I had a wonderful plastic surgeon. It has been 7 months-I really followed my surgeon’s advice-now-After looking and feeling like a monster-No one can really tell! My son bought me sooo many wonderful things that he thought I could use. One of the gifts was a gel eye mask that I keep in the fridge along with a rose quartz roller. I roll my eyes and face-and put the eye mask on-one eye at a time! It has become one of my favorite morning routine-before skincare! I had a forehead flap--partially and my nostrils finally match! Just wanted to share. Again, I love and appreciate your help! Kimberly 😘
Hi great video, my AM is splash face with water. Skin ceuticals c serum and sunscreen. My PM ponds fragrance free cold cream. Cerave hydrating cleanser. Perscription Retin A. Done nighty night time😳
I’m 56 just started gua sha, I use it with Elemis balm cleanser to minimize any friction on the skin at night. The stones are cooling under the eyes and it’s in a posh little pouch. My geologist husband laughed because one of our hundreds of stones was not acceptable, lol, it’s gimmicky yes. But it’s relaxing and I found that it helps my sinuses and pain and stiffness in the occipital area. Elemis skin superfood each am, sunscreen. Dysport to the globellar area, 20+ years of once a week or more Rx tretinoin cream, spot treat with pink drying liquid or Normaderm by Vichy. Probably headed for lip plumping and maybe blepharoplasty in the next year.
Great video! At 52 people often think I’m under 40 & aside from using Botox on my 11’s, I haven’t done injectables or surgical procedures. I attribute most of this to genetics, however my neck started aging rapidly in my late 30’s (guessing my job had a lot to do with it). I’ve tried so many things & topicals & none worked UNTIL I found a LED red light device from Omnilux. I promise you it has worked.. slowly but it WORKS! My derm even asked me what I had been doing and I told her the red light every day & also started using a sleep wedge which has reduced my nasolabial lines & significantly decreased eye puffiness & eyelid drooping. (Seriously my SIL is a regular user of fillers and could not believe I had not had filler around my mouth). I was 100% sceptic on both things (LED red light & sleeping elevated on my back) & both have done wonders in *helping*, not curing, inevitable sagging. The LED neck wrap also does the décolleté at the same time and that has reduced pigmentation of some sun damage. Omnilux has been studied and is at the top end of that type of device so buyer beware of buying this type product from Amazon. The device is an investment & so easy to use. I try to do 3 cycles ( 30 mins) per day while getting ready. Well worth the time & money for me. (LED red light is supposed to stimulate collagen production which leads to plumping and more elasticity 🤷🏻♀️).
Thank you for this! So informative. I’ve never had a skin care routine and six months ago started buying lots of products thinking I needed them. Ive finally come to the conclusion that a gentle exfoliating cleanser and moisturizer is all I need. And Elf brand is wonderful for both products so overall my routine is very affordable as well.
I use the FAB oatmeal toner which also has honey in it. My skin is sensitive and I have redness and I find it super calming. It’s def more in the category of not your typical toner.
Loved this “category” approach to skin care we don’t need. There’s enough to sort through in “what we do need” category. It’s nice to filter out these categories that aren’t really beneficial. Will be looking for your update on the light masks. Thanks!
This is really good! Some of these things I never even knew about, but I know some people that spend a lot of money on skin care products. I rarely use anything but water on my face. If it's really dirty or oily, I use shampoo on it to get it clean. My make up just consists of lip stick.
I have been exploring skincare since this year (because I need something to do in pandemic) and now I like trying out skincare products so much it sparks joy to see new products, toner is my favorite skincare, because it feels good on my skin XD I have forgotten my skinminimalism and money-saving skincare target now, I don't know how to go back to it lol...
Thank you for the video! I do feel that Kiehl’s Iris Extract Activating Treatment Essence DOES make a difference as a step before your serum. The skin becomes brighter, smoother and softer. But it is an extra step of course, you don’t need it all the time.
Tretinoin simplified my routine because it was so immediately effective (after years of wasted money on ineffective products). I did recently incorporate a weekly 10-minute AHA/BHA peel that has helped, but as winter came on quickly here, I've found I need to cut that back to every other week in order to not damage my skin barrier. Dermarolling with those needles just gives me the creeps.
@@bella2432 hello! You could go really slowly at first: apply it over moisturizer every 2nd or 3rd night. Try that for four weeks and see how it goes. And if you feel you need to, apply another layer of moisturizer on top, but wait until your skin is touch-dry and the tret has absorbed. Hope that helps, and good luck! 💖
@@bella2432 I have extremely sensitive and dry skin and I am never putting tretion without a thin layer of moisturizer, and then one more on top of tretionin. I've never had any peeling or irritation.
@@bella2432 It is prescription. My skin tends to peel in colder weather. When that happens, I wear a moisturizer or moisturizing serum under the tretinoin. I've also found a two minute massage of cleansing balm lifts off the dead peeled skin.
I only use eye cream during fall/winter since the rest of my skin gets super dry and I need a very thick and nourishing cream for my face that I can’t use for my eyes. If I put thick creams on my eyelids I get milia.
I cant believe allll the money I spent on skincare product trends just because a youtuber recommended it. I cut down to cleanser, moisturizer. My skin looks so soothed and calm something that wasn’t happening with all the essences, toners, retinol, exfoliants. Not a only did I cut down on products and money spent, but even watching countless repetitive TH-cam recommendation.
I think certain skin conditions do very well with essence toner sheet masks. They can be really great for dehydrated skin. And even great for acne prone skin that can benefit from balancing the skin with more hydration… I agree with the other things though.
Good tips for skin who does not have acne or eczema. But for people who suffer from these things, we do need often drying medications. Which again means we do need moisturisers
I confess, I use a toner. I love the smell, and it just makes me feel like I’m getting every last bit of makeup/dirt off of my face (even after the double-cleanse). 🌷
Double cleanse at night (if I wore makeup) or use plain glycerin soap in the shower, moisturize, SPF in the morning, retinol at night three times a week, exfoliate once or twice a week (not on retinol nights) and once a month (deep cleaning or extra hydrating) mask! That’s it! I’m diligent about what I do end up doing every day/every week but nothing more, My skin needs glycerin. Sunscreen and retinol , that’s it. If I see or feel a huge pimple, then a tiny dot of benzoyl peroxide. No toners, absolutely no AHAs or glycolic acid and no eye cream. Vitamin C didn’t work for me and many serums are just extra stuff I don’t need. I’m 38 and people think I’m in my 20s, depending on the day and lighting. Lol! Another super helpful video, Dr. Sam, thank you!
I learned a very long time ago that the best skin care items for me were simple moisturizer and a light scrubby facial cleanser because I am in the garden so much. 90% of the time just plain soap and water are my friend but there are days that I get more dirt on me than in the ground. 🙂 I have not found a good facial sunscreen that does not cause a rash so I wear a large hat when playing outside. I also stopped fighting the fact that I do not know how to apply make up so along with the moisturizer I only use mascara and a tinted lip balm. Quick and easy and I am ready for the day.
This was useful and matches my experience except for one thing. I have very sensitive skin and most facial moisturizers sting my undereye and eyelid areas. So I have found that eye creams are useful for me because as I age I need to moisturize my eye area and only eye creams are gentle enough to do it without stinging. I don't expect miracles, though - just moisture!
5:17 - My dermatologist incorporated a toner to my skin care routine, only because it has salicylic acid as the active ingredient which my facial wash doesnt have (I use cetaphil gentle cleanser). I must say it really helped with my acne, almost gone now 🎉😊
I use my red light therapy mask and chest and neck device 3 times per week. I did the research and found out the correct amount of near infrared light and red light needed. I find it relaxing and I do it for 10 to 20 min. 3 times per week.
Cleanser, toner, moisturizer, eye cream (and sunscreen in the morning) has turned out to be my magic routine. Also a light physical scrub about once or twice a month helps my skin look radiant and more even overall. And honestly, if I don't use an eye cream it's noticeable after a couple of weeks. That area of skin will get dry and more delicate that usually. Salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are my enemies. Nothing dries my skin out like those two products... they help minimize pimples for sure but the negative side effects aren't worth it.
I'm 62 and have hereditary undereye bags and dark circles that make me look tired. Nothing I've ever tried has made much difference. Still, I do find that Neutrogena Peptide multi-action eye cream seems to temporarily reduce the undereye puffiness and brightens a little bit better than anything else I've used.
Dr Ellis thank you so much for another amazing and informative video. I just want to add my personal experience of using the NUface in combination to the Omnilux infrared mask. I have found this regime (and I do keep it up religiously) has worked for me in terms of 1) improved skin texture (although not in a transformative way) 2) Skin elasticity and the feel of the skin around the jawline feeling again thicker and firmer ( that is definitely there I am not imagining it). Although let me add that anyone who has serious skin laxity and in need of a surgical invasion to correct sagging skin should not bother with my regime and really consider surgery. But for someone who is noticing gradual looser skin it can help, at least it has helped me. Thank you again for always bringing your expertise so generously to all of us.
I tried eye cream years ago because a few friends said it was a must. All it did was irritate the skin around my eyes (this was a cream for sensitive skin even). My skin was always itchy and would get red and little bumps appeared (eyeliner irritates as well), so I just don't put anything around my eyes because they are just super sensitive. Needless to say I am always happy to hear eye cream is not at all a must.
Great video! I would like to see a video on haircare. What do you get done at the salon, how often and what products do you use to keep your blonde healthy looking ;)
I started occasionally masks after spending an extended vacation in Korea with my family. The directions say not to rinse them off after so I don’t. I agree, I do not need them. I consider them a treat and a time to relax. I do not have a red light devise but have considered buying one. If you find any compelling research information, please do a video. I love your nonsense way of communicating. Thanks Doc 💕
I find that when I don't use a hydrating korean toner, my skin is more dehydrated. I have oil, dehydration prone skin that is SO finicky that if it wants a toner, I give it what it wants 😅
I have a pretty simple routine - Vitamin C, moisturizer, sunscreen and a micellar water and sometimes I wonder if its too simple but now I know its not! I do need to get in on some tretinoin but that's it :)
I love to scrub my face and body a couple of times a week. Well I love the results but it is a bit of a chore. For me it’s to control dry, itchy skin, getting ashy and dealing with psoriasis from time to time. Would love to learn about any easier ways to combat dry skin issues/get relief and/or psoriasis relief. It’s not severe, but if I skip it, I tend to feel itchy and more dried out faster and the psoriasis areas seem more scaly/crusty. One thing I’ve always loved tho is how Noxema makes my skin feel when I clean my face with it. Lol. The cooling and my skin feeling moist but not greasy. For my face I just wash and moisturize and call it a day. (Besides a Scrub about twice a week lol).
I have to say, I was reluctant about the at-home red light masks, but I caved and bought the Omnilux Contour. I've been using it for about 5 weeks now and have seen an improvement. The redness in my skin doesn't seem to be as bad and my pores don't seem as prominent. I've been very happy with the results so far and feel it's worth the purchase.
Same. Also firmed up my face overall, so I can tell it really is stimulating more collagen production. I tried other devices like Dermawand, but couldn't say they helped, and was tedious having to move the device around to cover my entire face.
Hi - I am catching up on all your videos as a new subscriber. I am 58 years old and for the last few years, have really focused on my skincare regime at home. I agree with everything you say, but I do have a more elaborate skincare regime than most. I say it is my hobby…lol. I use a lot of ingredients and actives - and I try to listen to my skin. I do sometimes fall victim to the hype of something new (like I am trying citybeauty firming creams - even though I think I know better, but dang, so hard to ignore so many saying they have results.) but I do try to keep always to the core of the actives I know I need. I will say in the last year I have incorporated at home devices. #1 is LED and I can say absolutely it is amazing how much better my skin tone is with LED. I can see a major difference (and this is someone who was taking care of her skin before), so I have no issue recommending that. I also use RF (Newa) and MC (Nuface). I feel like I see a difference in tone, and my hooded eyelids seem to recede as long as I keep using them. Not a huge difference, but for me, my hooded lids are what show my age most, so since I can impact them, I keep up with the devices. The newest one I am trying is the NIRA. I have been using it for months, but not sure if it is helping at all. I do have thicker skin than many women my age (my injector told me) and I am coming off of facial fillers myself, so not sure if this helps. Doesn’t take long in my overall routine, so I am going to keep it up for a while. What I do want to incorporate is cosmetic microneedling (carefully, using all precautions) and TCA peels. I will say that people who know me ask me what I am doing because my skin looks wonderful. It doesn’t help the deeper structural changes that happen with aging (wrinkling and sagging) except superficially, but I will take what I can get. I am the sucker who is trying all eye creams, and again, it can help superficially, so it is all about expectations. I wonder what you think about supplements? I am taking collagen peptide supplement daily and Source Naturals Skin Eternal Plus as well as vitamin D to work on skin health from the inside. This is new - for the past 6 months. It is a lot, but not sure what I could remove at this point and keep my results!!
I cut everything out after I wasn’t seeing results (just irritation) and now use my rosacea treatment and a basic cream (vanicream) and it’s working so well. Now I feel comfortable splurging on elegant spf
@@lanasloboda9520 its a combination of Ivermectin, Metronidazole & Niacinamide. It’s a prescription from dermatica (I’m from the UK). Been using for 2 months now it’s really helped
Hey i have a problem with itchy skin. I visited several dermatologist but all they do is giving me creams. I don’t think I have an allergy because there is no rash. I stopped taking all medications (small dose anti depressants) because i thought it is a side effect. Can you please make a video about this or give me advice? Maybe it’s the country I live and my doctors don’t have enough expertise. I would be very thankful because it is difficult to live with struggling to sleep at night and not being able to sit and study because the itching starts. Heat (sitting on a surface or laying in bed) definitely causes this itching.
I've had really good success with whitening and exfoliating face masks that seem to also give me a more smooth skin texture but they need to be washed off because the liquid part has a sticky feel
Great Tips! ! In regards to facial massage/ gua sha tools, what I see, results wise ,from my dedicated practice of massage is that it 'wakes up' my face, by increasing the circulation. At my age, 50s, that is super helpful, as I usually wake up looking tired & w/ just a few min of massage, results may be subtle, but are immediate !
I started a new skin care a year ago with only 3 products. CeraVe Foaming Face wash-use it morning and night using only my fingers for about 30 seconds. Followed by a serum of 10% Niacinamide + 1% zinc to help control blemishes, once absrobed, I use CeraVe Daily Moisturizing lotion. It has been a game changer!!
I’ve been using my eye cream religiously for years, but that’s because I have really over sensitive skin around my eyes, and I used to get really bad eyelid eczema, and this cream really helped to heal it. I’ve also noticed that when I don’t use the cream for a long time, the skin around my eyes get super super sensitive and painful, and the eczema comes back. 🤷🏻♀️
I love your videos and how informative they are while also not making people feel stupid or like their more elaborate routines are stupid. I personally have several steps to my routine morning and night. Each item I use is carefully chosen and serves a purpose. The number of steps is mostly because it’s my self care and me time. It could certainly be done in fewer and at times I leave things out if I’m tired or not up to it. I really enjoy a rose quartz roller and a gua sha but I like these because it feels nice and it helps with facial puffiness which I get a lot of. Mostly…it feels good. I also have a micro current device….which I use because it feels nice. I actually don’t use it as much for my face as I do my shoulders and back of the neck where I hold tension. So I’m not using these for the purposes some people do, expecting any results beyond mentioned. Oh I do use a caffeine eye cream. I keep it cool so it feels good applying it but I’m not convinced it’s helpful yet. My personal jury is still out on this one.
Thank you Dr. Sam for clarifying the not needed products. As a woman in my late 40s, I am trying to slowly incorporate other products besides cleanser and sunscreen into my routine. I rarely wear makeup and prefer a paired down simple routine to my skincare. At this point I am going to check out your video on starting retinol to see if it helps with the fine lines, not a lover of invasive techniques like injections. Slow and steady...Will work with a derm doc to figure it all out.😊
I just started doing gua sha for the sole reason of relaxation. I don’t expect it to do anything for my skin at all. I had this horrible knot between my neck and back of shoulder and my bf had massaged it but it was still hurting badly. So I concentrated the gua sha on that area and it felt so amazing. It fully got rid of it and for the first time I woke up with no pain on my neck & shoulders. For this reason I’m sticking with it. Again, I don’t do it for skin benefits, it just helps my neck & shoulder problems tremendously!
I used to do the full Korean 10 Step Program...I've paired down and simplified my routine significantly since starting tretinoin. I still layer more stuff than a minimalist would but I have super dry skin at the best of days and feel I need it, especially during winter.
If there’s anything I’ve learned, the hard way, with skincare is less is more. Try to cut out the ones you feel like are unnecessary or substitute 2/3 products for 1 that contains the main ingredients for the 3 or something like that. Please do not take it as a professional advice, this is what worked for me though.
Im also a tret user with very dry skin, and I layer as well much to the chagrin of my derm. Ive found it’s SIGNIFICANTLY helped the appearance of my skin. Not at 10 steps, but I like a glowing look.
@@Justanothermusicnerdxo yeah it works for me. Try to rip the hydrating toner out of my cold dead hands. Also, after nearly a year I can finally see that tret glow everyone talks about.
I don't believe that eye cream helps to fight wrinkles and etc., but it really moisturizes my under eye area which is very dry. And I always use toner before applying facial moisturizer, it makes my skin feel more moisturized.
Dr. Ellis is totally correct. Most people only need 2 items in their skin routine. I've always used 2-3 products in my routine. I only reach for my homemade face-masks when I feel my skin is not getting addressed with the current products that I am using which are to be benefitted after a while. Thanks for this awesome video:)
I have been using a red light that I found has been helpful for rosacea. My rosacea is very much improved, though I cannot attribute it solely to the use of my red light. I used it daily for several months a couple years ago when I decided to get very serious about treating my rosacea. It seemed to help. Now I only use it when I am having a flare-up, which still occurs from time to time, though not very frequently or as severe as it once was. It definitely provides immediate relief from discomfort, but doesn't completely eliminate the redness. It's kind of weird because after ten minutes my face will feel completely cooled down, but it'll remain red for several hours.
Thank you for this honest, educational video. Beauty/skincare companies are notorious for luring us into buying unnecessary products with false claims so I am grateful that you share your knowledge with us. You are the best!
Great advice. I started including moisturiser cleansers in my skin and my skin looked good initially and then different issues started for which i now include better cleansers and moisturisersin my routine as we look after ingredients these days, but then i have always had flawless skin with breakouts very rare and i felt that i dont need cleansers always or moisturisers. Those are more of feel good factor for me but definitely not a necessity which i dont see anybody talk about. Skin by default has ability to heal, exfoliate and protect itself. Thanks for sharing such an info
I have been using Vu Skin radiant eyes for over a year and I see fresher looking eye lids on myself. The effects don't last all day though, but maybe long enough for me. I'm trying Clarins eye lid cream now also and my lids look refreshed and smoothed out more. I'm sure they put ingredients in this creams to not just be considered a moisturizer. I value your expertise. Thank you for this video.
Cleanse, vitamin C serum, sunscreen and a bit of Vaseline lip balm to start off my day since I work from home and dont need makeup. Thanks, Doc, for helping us sieve out the BS!!
Thank you for your channel. I have been using a red light device and a microcurrent device ( I alternate every other day) for months. The red light device has lessened my pore size and generally improved the quality of my skin. The microcurrent device provides short term lifting around the eye area. Love them both! Otherwise I use 20 % vitamin C ferulic acid vitamin E, Trentinoin .1%.
I do use eye cream. I tend to be drier around my eyes and the moisturizer I use on my face is much lighter since I lean oily on the rest of my face. I also have a. Outlet of mask that I use on occasion. One is exfoliating and gives me some quick results if my skin is feeling a little rough, the other contains salicylic acid and I use it overnight if I have a breakout, it helps with the inflammation and seems to heal a little faster. But, they aren’t strictly necessary and I mostly just use glycolic acid or salicylic to manage these issues.
I have to say, I have an elaborate routine. I use toners, essences, serums (actives), moisturizer, masks, sunscreen. It’s my happy place. I spend almost an hour every night doing my skin care routine. I also use some actives in the morning. I only recently started a routine with my skin. I wish I knew all of this years ago. I wouldn’t have as much damage. Most importantly, I am wearing sunscreen everyday without fail!! 🥳🥳🥳
@@andy_criola I feel like most of them actually have made a difference in my skin. I have rosacea and have been dealing with a bout of perioral dermatitis. Since I have added glycerin, ceramides, and snail mucin, my dermatitis has gotten under control. As far as the active serums, my PIE and PIH have significantly improved as well as my rosacea. I truly have seen a major improvement in my skin. I recently added tretinoin, and I am thrilled with my results so far!
@@valeriemarie1985 what’s your routine? I could spend an hour just washing my face and only using moisturizer lol! I LOVE my nighttime routine! It’s literally my everything! I’m curious what you use!😁💕
Our under eye skin needs moisture, and some of us can’t handle just any cream. I’m prone to milia so only a few under eye creams work for me. Same goes for concealer. So in my opinion eye creams are actually a must.
i only apply moisturizer on my cheeks and my neck because that's where my skin needs moisture, i have combination skin. also the cerave moisturizer made me break out a lot, but their SA cleanser saved my skin
Thank you doctor.i am young girl and has been anxious to save up and buy so many products and have bought costly products seeing how everybody online using and saying them essentials.finally someone saying what's the most important ones.
THANK YOU for this video. Since “actives” have become more widely known and accessible, skincare has become overly complicated and dermatologists have been seen as redundant(no thanks to media campaigns run by the lots of curology etc.). But after years of overly complicated skincare that didn’t help address my skin concerns beyond hydration, it was eventually a dermatologist who helped address my concerns(hyperpigmentation) and now I have a simple routine that includes a simple morning moisturizer and sunscreen and Retin-A a few nights a week. My skin has never been better. Now my next goal is to work with my dermatologist to come with a routine for my body KP because my current routine (though it works) is rather exhausting.
I personally don’t like using moisturizers for my eye area. They usually seem too heavy. Ever since I started using eye creams, I’ve noticed my eye areas are brighter and more supple. I don’t care to spend a ton of money because I agree that it’s not necessarily the miracle product it is often made out to be. Fortunately I’ve found two super affordable ones, by cocokind & good molecules. They have diff ingredients, and I use one in the morning and one in the eve. The cocokind one is my favorite. It took me awhile to pick up an eye cream because I saw a lot of skinfluencers talking about how they’re pointless. Eventually I found Ben Neiley who didn’t think that way and so I decided to give it a go and now I’m obsessed with the results!
I have use all the stuff she said not to use and will continually use as needwd. I'm 45 but everyone says I look like I'm in early 20s. I have Fitzgerald skin type between 3 and 4 with dark brown hair and eyes.
This is what I usually do and I've got people thinking Im 19 (I'm 30). Side note: genetics play a major factor as both my parents looked 20 years younger than they were well into their 60s/70s No makeup SC routine: (before bed) SA cleanser or hydrating cleanser, serum (usually retinol or Vit. C, sometimes Niacinamide), moisturizer. (Morning) warm/room temp water on the face, sunscreen. Makeup SC routine: Cleansing balm, hydrating cleanser or SA cleanser, serums, moisturizer.
Thank you for explaining about balancing the pH. I was using Thayers witch hazel for that very reason. Now I know I don't need to do that. I do gua sha once in a great while....it feels nice. I don't do it to change my skin. It's just kind of fun to do. I have done micro needling....but haven't in over a year. I never had any skin issues when I did it...nothing bad happened. I think I saw some improvements from doing it....but....it doesn't feel good !! It hurts a little bit. I'd rather do gua sha.
The thing about eye creams is that most facial products come with the alert that they are not adequate for use in eye area. That's why I feel more safe using eye cream that has the substances I use in the face.
I am 72 years old and I would love to see you do a video on skincare for 70+ individuals. So many do them for 30-40-50's and that leaves out all of the baby boomers who are still wanting to look their best. Please consider doing more for those that are older seniors (60-70-80's). I like you videos and thank you for your consideration.

tons of sunscreen. very gentle and hydrating cleanser. heavy occlusive moisturizer. and some Vaseline over your moisturiser lol. you'll be good. also a retinoid if you want to treat sun spots and wrinkles/keep the skin healthy all the way to its deepest layers. but mostly: SUNSCREEN
Résumé of what we don’t need:
1. Essences
2. Toner
3. Facial scrubs
4. Sheet-masks, any rince-off mask
5. Pore strips
6. Eye cream
7. Tools for skincare

Two things have changed that:
Same. It’s too much.
I’ve been guilty of hopping from active to active and product to product because there are so many great things out there to try. However, after starting Tretinoin I was forced to simplify my routine. It’s more effective and it’s saving me money! (Part of me still has some FOMO though)
Trying to finish up all of my skincare products first. After that I will narrow it down to what I really love.
You AlSo NEED sunScreen.
Don’t forget the sunscreen! It has been shown to not only prevent sun damage and slow down photoaging but even reverse it a bit with consistent wear!
@@alicerose5191 I use sunscreen as well
I use toner as well.
Thank you!

I love the feeling of the Purito Fermented 94 Complex Boosting Essence. I love that extra step, it makes even a simple day feel luxury.

I find your honesty refreshing and I appreciate your approach to skin care! Many thanks !
Thank you. Also, the colours you've used - clothing, makeup and hair all suit you so well! You look so lovely!
Hi, Dr.
I wii loose my Rouge status as well. I’m liking drug store as well at 55 y.o.
I’m happy for you…I’m happy for US!🎉
Ugh you broke my heart with eye creams and the tools but I don’t see much difference on my skin. Wish I watched this before wasting my money.

I do micro needling once a month in a conservative way. I use .05 with a good quality roller that I clean with alcohol before and after. I love how my skin looks healthier after the treatment. Thank you! Great video.
The best skincare routine is healthy diet, enough sleep, water, and vitamin e cream. That's all I've ever done and I look 20 yrs younger than I am.
I love the Korean routine. I wouldn't change it unless I become jobless. I have rosacea and Korean products are so gentle.

Thanks!
I use salicylic acid from Paula’s choice and SA cleanser from CeraVe and it really helps my skin because I have Kp on my face
This is really good! Some of these things I never even knew about, but I know some people that spend a lot of money on skin care products. I rarely use anything but water on my face. If it's really dirty or oily, I use shampoo on it to get it clean. My make up just consists of lip stick.
Thank you Doc, I need this. Sometimes so overwhelming seeing so much step in skincare and so much time we need to follow.
I have not been able to stick to Tretinoin without being a peeling mess. Is this prescription Tretinoin you’re using?
@@bella2432 same here but I followed Dr. Drays method and it worked so well. Slow and steady but no irritation.
Same! 😃 I love rose toner 💗
I am in LOVE with your voice!
Thank you so very much for all of your tips! ♥️
Amazing that you found a routine that works so well for you! Goes to show how skin is so variable from person to person!
I love these videos! I don't have the patience for a complex routine.
Great video! I would like to see a video on haircare. What do you get done at the salon, how often and what products do you use to keep your blonde healthy looking ;)
Can you please do a video talking about substitutes for eye creams or for addressing issues like fine lines and dark patch under the eye
I have oil, dehydration prone skin that is SO finicky that if it wants a toner, I give it what it wants 😅
that’s so true we don’t need eye cream , my skin around my eyes was fine but since I started putting cream , serums its soooooo messy now
Love how honest this is
I have a pretty simple routine - Vitamin C, moisturizer, sunscreen and a micellar water and sometimes I wonder if its too simple but now I know its not!
I have the same led device and I absolutely love it!!! I also feel it’s worth the purchase.😊
I also love my Silki'n & NuFace,noticed improvement immediately.
Hi Sam ,can you share ,what do you use for rosacea ?I have it too.(thank you)
Yes, I would love to know what your rosacea treatment is also!
@@lanasloboda9520 its a combination of Ivermectin, Metronidazole & Niacinamide. It’s a prescription from dermatica (I’m from the UK). Been using for 2 months now it’s really helped
@@Sam-td6qd thanks for sharing I will keep in mind.
I actually thought you were Dr. Sam Ellis for a second...and then realized you are another Sam Ellis who is NOT Dr. Sam Ellis. How funny!😊
Great Tips! ! In regards to facial massage/ gua sha tools, what I see, results wise ,from my dedicated practice of
massage is that it 'wakes up' my face, by increasing the circulation.
Could you tell me which eye cream you use, please?
Again, I don’t do it for skin benefits, it just helps my neck & shoulder problems tremendously!
this was good advice. Too many people still don't understand that traditional toners are redundant.
I used to do the full Korean 10 Step Program...I've paired down and simplified my routine significantly since starting tretinoin. I still layer more stuff than a minimalist would but I have super dry skin at the best of days and feel I need it, especially during winter.
I love using snail mucin cream before tretinoin.
Gentle cleanser, tretinoin and petroleum jelly (or a good ceramide based moisturiser) ftw!!!
But does all this things work or it's something that you do because it feels good?
@@andy_criola I feel like most of them actually have made a difference in my skin. I have rosacea and have been dealing with a bout of perioral dermatitis. Since I have added glycerin, ceramides, and snail mucin, my dermatitis has gotten under control. As far as the active serums, my PIE and PIH have significantly improved as well as my rosacea. I truly have seen a major improvement in my skin. I recently added tretinoin, and I am thrilled with my results so far!
@@andy_criola and it also feels good. My skin care routine is truly my self care.
Side note: genetics play a major factor as both my parents looked 20 years younger than they were well into their 60s/70s
No makeup SC routine: (before bed)
SA cleanser or hydrating cleanser, serum (usually retinol or Vit. C, sometimes Niacinamide), moisturizer.
(Morning) warm/room temp water on the face, sunscreen.
