According to the "Scorpio Engine" HOTCHIPS Symposium presentation XOX uses a SATA2 interface as it uses the identical Southbridge chip used in the Xbox One S (released a year earlier). There are diagrams of the Southbridge of the XOX on Anandtech and Tomshardware. Similarly a google image search for HOTCHIPS+Scorpio+southbridge will bring up the diagram.
Speaking of cache drives could you do a review of the AMD FuzeDrive, seems similar to what optane does for intel but for AMD, just curious if its any good and worth the price, haven't seen any reviews on it yet. Thanks and always good work!
People think this is a joke, but it is an actual problem. There are many games that have mission briefing as a loading screen, and now those load so fast you can't read it. I had to install some games on my slow USB stick to slow them down. But often even that doesn't help, because modern processors are also very fast, so they can process the loaded data much faster. Sometimes you have no choice, but to quickly take a screenshot and read it from there.
This is a great solution, put a 2TB MX500 in my One X, definitely snappier - partner observed Witcher 3 menus were much quicker and more responsive, really pleased.

SSDs and high fps monitors are evil little things. They poison your eyes and your mind to be unable to live without them anymore. :D Same goes with a good quality sound system...

I have a 255gb ssd and the only game I gave in there is cod MW and I got like 13gb left lmao, also since it doesn’t allocate the data it uses up some of the storage as it’s running as well :P at least 8gb
After going to SSD boot drive instead of regular HDD I was so amaized that I actually bought and gifted SSDs to several of my friends so that they could learn the SPEED of SSD.
PC boot time alone is crazy. It's sometimes the difference between "I can turn this off" and "I might need it soon, better leave it on." Seeing systems that take longer than 20 seconds to boot is painful.
I would get an SSD for my PC, but I think I’ll screw something up if I do it. I can’t figure out how to just get the OS on the SSD and leave everything else on my HDD and get some games and other things on the SSD too.
Put your new ssd in, unplug your hdd, boot, install windows, after windows installed, connect the hdd again. Done. There's a method to keep your installed steam, google it. Its easy.
You're spot on with upgrading a PS4 to an SSD. I put a Crucial MX500 in my PS4 Pro a few months ago and it was super simple. Simply swap the drives, load the PS4 firmware to a flash drive and boot from the flash drive. The whole process took me about an hour and my PS4 Pro is lighting fast now!
Why people want to clone hdd to ssd. It is not a good idea, it never works as it should. Why you dont put ssd in and install os from usb? I did it on a few consoles. It is not as easy as ps4 but easy enough.
i upgraded the pc of a friend today, he used windows 7 installed on a 10 year old 1tb sata hdd, and now windows 10 installed on a 120gb sata ssd. his pc took 5 minutes to boot to the desktop, now it takes only 15 seconds - totally worth every cent
M.2 is just a form factor it has nothing to do with speeed. NVMe is the interface specification, which is often associated with the M.2 form factor. However, an M.2 could very easily only support SATA 3 speed.

I have both an Xbox one x and a gaming pc with a i7 6700k and gtx 1060 and I have no preference, all depends on my mood if you want something that you can just sit down grab your controller relax and play some games with some friends then an Xbox is for you but if you’re really serious about every single frame and want to sit at a desk all the time with a keyboard and mouse granted a mouse is much more accurate than a controller but for me the comfort and ease of access is what matters to me I’d rather just turn on my Xbox and start playing a game instead of waiting for my pc to load up and then go through the many different game stores ex. Steam, origin, Microsoft store then waiting for the game to load
I would love to see you do a follow-up to this video. Take the actual Xbox One X drive out of the console, and format it. Then benchmark it on a PC, using a SATAII cable, then a SATA III cable, and tell us the difference! Would love to see some other stuff like various external drives compared, etc.

Honestly, more like the year 2000. 7200RPM drives were about the only platter drives that made any sense once they were released. It's ridiculous that Apple, for example, is STILL using 5400RPM drives in all their $2000+ base models. If you don't pay out the nose to upgrade them when buying, then you get a $2000-$4000 potato!
I took a usb external drive, unscrewed it, swapped the hdd for a ssd drive, turned my xbox on and let the system format it. Had no issue with it, very happy with my upgrade👍 It took me about 3 minutes to copy nfs heat from the internal hdd to the ssd I was amazed how quickly it installed.
Oh sorry, i mean Microsoft Xbox Series One.......which is a bit of a conflict as it is not the first one in the Xbox series, which is a bit confusing to me, even though this is running a custom AMD CPU/GPU combo i think that the people at Microsoft have been taking naming lessons from Intel (don't get me wrong, i love Intel CPU's but when you start calling your processors Core i9-10900 XE or some other tongue twisting name then you end up confusing more people then helping them, especially considering that the Core i9-9900KS Unlocked Special Edition is a generation behind and its faster than the i9-10900 XE) so seriously Microsoft....they should have stuck to their guns and kept the Project Scarlet name but it is pretty obvious that the corporate VIPs decided to play marketing name games with this product.....who wants to see if the name changes again before launch???

After 2 hours I decided I couldn't go on, had already turned into kill monster, upgrade, rinse and repeat. The motion blur is nauseous and the saturation levels are a joke, both common techniques to make up for poor graphics.
Yo man, best video on the topic at hand in years. The fact before getting into the main video... You touched on how other options for a SSD Xbox One X install. You are able to install one internally(replacement) like you said, Awesome you confirmed for me that internal install does require cloning(offical sizes, scrpit install with the 5 microsoft partions) making an external application off SDD to Xbox a more then fine option until we get them in the next console. Since before the X was released ive used a 7200 2tb HHD for quicker load times. The main thing I noticed was my early Destiny days. The Upgraded hard drive helped in raids alone from load time saves. Meaning even bringing up the "Start Screen" (Armor/consumables) would almost load instantly allowing for quick ammo popping/ weapon swithing compared to the Normal 5400 rpm HDD, there was some lag with items taking a bit to load in the slots. P.S. I think you also only one to "admit" the X has a 5400 RPM HDD. Lol
I see many benchmark SSD vs the normal harddrive on Xbox One X but with external, you are limiting your bandwidth through USB 3.0. Plugging it in internally would give it a significant upgrade. Not only performance but in terms of heat and noise levels as well.
Please please please test internal SSD as well. I've been considering opening mine and installing a SSD, but I've read so many conflicting reports on improvements.
I can't forsee MS and Sony _not_ upgrading to either an SSHD or HDD + Optane standard for their next consoles. Even considering manufacturing costs, it just wouldn't make sense.
All you have to do is go to xbox website and download the osu onto a flash drive then extract it plug it into xbox with new drive and install offline update its actually quite easy
Recently replaced my internal. I wasn't interested in saving anything so I tossed it in and then did an offli e update to setup the ssd. After that login and setup... Use a external to backup anything and copy it back over once done.
Mmm, science! I'm glad you guys tested FFXV since I plan on getting it for PC. I hope they've optimized to a certain degree, but it's good to see that the launch times are so much better with an SSD even on consoles.
I was going to say something about that. The consoles not having modern storage is one thing, but I think the severely aged CPU cores in there is worse. Most games are single core speed limited for loading too (though I've started to come across a handful that actually make full use of many cores), and I think the Xbox One X with it's 2.4Ghz or whatever Jaguar cores is a pretty severe bottleneck.
Indeed. This was very apparent to me on the PC side when I switched from AMD FX8350 to Ryzen 5 1600x a year ago. I still use the same SSD but the loading times improved just by switching CPU.
GurtTarctor I mean let's put just HOW bad the CPU is into perspective: speaking nothing of the massive architectural advantages, my T-SKU'd *35W* TDP Skylake i7 has a higher base clock than even the chip in the X, which is essentially the chip in the original One/PS4/Pro, just with the guts overclocked out of it, and then several other internal organs for good measure. Which is... really not great to be honest. Don't get me wrong, overclocking is fine and all, but it will only net you real gains comparative to wear on your chip/power envelope increase up to a certain point, and I'd say we're far past that point. The reality is, even at the launch of the baseline hardware years ago, Jaguar was something I would struggle to even have said HAD a "last leg" to stand on. Now... it's 2018, Jaguar needs to go. It should have gone already.
Although I do agree that the Xbox One X's processer is very slow compared to your typical CPU on a desktop, you guys need to remember that consules are not really designed for multi-tasking and the fact that most consule games play at 30 FPS.
Captain Soban the games playing at 30 FPS is BECAUSE the CPU is weak, not the other way around. And none of our points have anything to do with "multitasking."

Steve, have you considered texting SATA vs NVMe SSD's in gaming on PC? It'd be interesting to see what difference it makes (if any) in not just in load times, but potentially reducing texture pop in and stuttering. Just a thought.
DrearierSpider1 may want to look harder as seen a several videos and several article on this and next to no improvement on load of NVME v SSD. Even seen RAID NVME used with little improvement. The problem becomes bottlenecks elsewhere in your system.
Chiriac Puiu Ya, the little data I've seen out there certainly suggests that. Plus with 50GB install sizes being the norm (and many more games approaching or reaching 100GB, like FFXV and Nioh), you're way better off investing that extra cost into capacity vs speed. The improvement of SATA SSD's over HDD's seems to come entirely from reduced latency and seek times, and game engines aren't utilizing the ridiculous speeds of NVMe anywhere close to their fullest.
Steve, would it be possible to repeat the test with a PS4 pro with the same games (except PUBG of course)? I realize there are a lot of vids for PS4 pro out already. But they mostly cover older games. Your selection is much more actual. Another question: What about drive wear down caused by the constant game recording feature? Wouldn't it be better to use an SSD only externally since the internal drive is always used for game recording (at least on PS4 afaik)
Thorsten Metzler Modern SSDs will be fine. You can do your own research but many drives can write Petabytes of data before outright failure. They will still write hundreds of thousands Terabytes of data before they start losing storage.
But that's because HDDs are getting way cheaper than they were a few years ago. Probably due to the end of the HDD shortage that was present a few years ago.

I cloned my X1X hard drive with no problem. I simply pulled it out of my console and popped it and the new SSD of the same capacity into a Sabrent standalone disk cloning device and just hit 1 button. BOOM! Direct clone done in 3 hours. Popped the SSD back into the console, closed it up, and fired it up. No muss no fuss.
Connected external Samsung T5 Portable SSD 500GB to rear USB port on One X on 07/14/18. Game tested is Subnautica. Here are my results. mm:ss:ds (ds= 10th of seconds) Dashboard to "Press Menu" screen when water is first visible. HDD 00:23:74 / SSD 00:15:35 "Press Menu" screen to "Play Game" screen. HDD 00:05:87 / SSD 00:02:90 Selecting game save to being in game ready to play. HDD 01:39:27 / 00:55:15
I replaced my internal HDD with a Samsung 860 SSD, and used ActiveBoot Sector-per-Sector Copy to the SSD from the HDD, and it works flawlessly. The Game and overall Console performance, is 10 to 20 times better than with the original stock drive.
would a SHDD work with the xbox one? if so the value would be much better spent there. i just got a hybrid drive for 60 canadian dollars. a terabyte of storage and all my games load at least twice as fast with some games like skyrim special edition now taking only 2 seconds or less to load the majority of interiors and like 5 seconds tops to load a big area. meanwhile a terabyte ssd would cost like 500ish give or take. and the difference between a hybrid drive and a pure ssd is not worth it to me anymore.

And in the end getting a terabyte of faster than hard drive storage is better than getting 120 gb of storage that is faster than that but still can cost more at that amount of storage. And if you want the same amount. Of storage. Its like almost ten times more expensive. Is that even worth it? Thats the question to ask yourself. Especially since your paying for nothing more than load times for your games and if your on pc your os.
Supposedly the Xbox one X has a Integrated 8gb non volatile cache on-board when Microsoft was comparing it the the base model. Which was added to reduce load times over the base console
It'll improve if read and write is faster than the speeds limited by USB 3.0. It may not be a huge difference I imagine, probably pretty similar. I did it just so I don't have to have an extra drive floating around outside the console. Even if your drive was the fastest drive possible, it many games aren't optimized to take advantage of those faster drives speeds so it will improve greatly, but only to a certain point. At a certain point you're spending unnecessary money on an expensively fast drive which speeds won't be used very much.

Here is the thing, so I work in IT at a small town bank, there is me and my boss in my department lol, but anyway, we have SSDs in everything here, and yes it is impressive how fast they are and how quickly they boot up, BUT SSDs literally have a ticking clock until the die and sometimes it does not take very long, especially if you don't configure your OS right. I have seen good SSDs go down within 2 years or less because of Windows for example. Here is the thing, unless you are a super impatient person and literally every second of waiting is an unbearable pain for you, there is not a good reason to buy an expensive SSD over a reliable hard drive, I don't even own an SSD at home, I have gamed from hard drives my whole life and never had an issue. A good mechanical drive can outlast a SSD if taken care of and is so much cheaper if you have a large game library like me, I literally have a 6TB drive with 5TB dedicated to my games lol. My computer boots in less than a minute and still takes less than a minute to launch anything.
I feel like for average use SSDs are fine reliability wise for most. I have had an SSD in my laptop for the past 4 years or so and have had no issues with it but I absolutely love the speed. It’s a 512gb proprietary unit (MacBook Pro) but it has really made the computer feel fast. I currently have an Xbox one X and do wish it was easier to upgrade the HDD to an SSD because loading times for Forza Horizon 4 are absolutely atrocious with the HDD. About two minutes or more to launch the game and get to your car. It’s pretty much the only device I use now that still has an HDD.
I understand that. I make a regular backup especially before and after I install a new game, then make a backup every month so I don't have to worry too much. I also clone my ssd's aftet 2 to 2.5 years of use to new ones. Just in case.

The need to revisit this by comparing the difference between an external solid state vs internal. Is there a difference in this system, or is the CPU such a bottleneck that it makes no difference.
@8:30 I somewhat still haven't seen ANYONE making a comparrison of an Xbox One with an internal SSD, and the new Series X. Hoping for the embargoes to go away and someone to take a look into just how much of a difference there would actually be to just upgrade the One with an internal NVME disk.

@@stuart4176 I just got a normal SATA ssd, that'd you'd install in a PC. The adapter is like $8 on ebay, and whenever you plug it in the Xbox will ask if you want to set it up for games or media, pick games, and it should work fine.
one test that would be really good to test the difference between the speeds of the two is hopping into your inventory screen in destiny 2 in the middle of a crucible match to swap weapons.... it takes upwards of 30 seconds normally to load up all of your weapons and armor, which more often than not, ends with your death before you can swap weapons around...
Does the Xbox One X actually use a SATA 3 connection internally? I'm fairly certain the original Xbox One only has a SATA 2 connection, making an internal SSD pretty much useless on them.
Suggestion for PC follow up: where is the loading bottleneck? I've tried to optimised my system for FFXIV using its Stormblood benchmark for reference. Hopefully not as flawed as the FFXV benchmark! Anyway, it reports load times as well as fps. Big jump from HD to SSD as expected, but the change in load times from SATA SSD, to NVMe SSD, to Optane, to ramdisk wasn't as great as hoped, especially for the last 3. Do we need faster CPUs? GPUs? Or something else?
I have done the internal replacement on my Xbox One X and used a 1TB SSD I had and had no problems with copy protection at all. Just ran a full sector by sector clone. Haven't had any trouble with it over the last couple of months since I did it. Was I supposed to?
Later in the video you talk about optane etc and no hybrid dirve, well they did their own version of hybrid drive but put the big cache piece on board itself versus the extra money to get it from Seagate.
Steve, the internal sata bus is not true sata 3. it actually is closer to sata 2 speeds. the ps4 is the same way. Using an internal hdd or ssd will always be faster on current gen consoles than any storage device used internally
As much as I love using an SSD for my games, it's too expensive to only use SSDs, I have 1 500GB SSD where I keep my single player games that I play on a regular basis (which really helps with the load times). Everything else goes on a HHD, but that one is almost full as well.

Wish the PS4 (non pro) had a sata III interface.... Unfortunately, it only has Sata || and I still upgraded to an SSD and the results were still AMAZING. Don't sleep on an SSD upgrade... continuous read times will def be better. But you will really see and increase when multiple processes are going on at the same time. Example, Open dashboard while in game to join party with no lag time. This is due to the much fast read time on the ssd. in game example on WZ: Loadout drops would lag when opening them up to select class - SSD will fix that issue Loadout Icons/operators not loading in main menu(sluggish) - SSD will fix that issue Installing game updates extremely fast compared to what they used to be.
Great info thanks. I have been trying to decide if I wanted to put an SSD on my XB1X or not. I think I would probably go the external route though as not to void any warranty. My launch day XB1X already died after 4 months the HDMI output stopped working though I could still stream connect to it from my PC so it was working just not the HDMI output. Makes me not want to open it up even though it is easy to do.
I bought an SSD External Rosewill harddrive to help load textures in PUBG on xbox one x. For me, the textures pop in at a noticable level. Also, I no longer get stuck I'm buildings because the textures load as soon as you jump.

Given that XOX internally offers SATA2, the USB 3.0 interface should in theory be less of a bottleneck for SSDs than the internal SATA2 interface.

SSD's are bad for gaming because they load games so fast you don't have time to read all the helpful game tips and hints during the load screen.

You don't have to clone your drive. I put an ssd in my one X and updated via USB and voila. Zero issues, took 30 minutes.
That's because Microsoft released an update so you can do that. When this video was made, you couldn't do that.

You're spot on with upgrading a PS4 to an SSD. I put a Crucial MX500 in my PS4 Pro a few months ago and it was super simple. Simply swap the drives, load the PS4 firmware to a flash drive and boot from the flash drive. The whole process took me about an hour and my PS4 Pro is lighting fast now!

Why people want to clone hdd to ssd. It is not a good idea, it never works as it should. Why you dont put ssd in and install os from usb? I did it on a few consoles. It is not as easy as ps4 but easy enough.
i upgraded the pc of a friend today, he used windows 7 installed on a 10 year old 1tb sata hdd, and now windows 10 installed on a 120gb sata ssd.
his pc took 5 minutes to boot to the desktop, now it takes only 15 seconds - totally worth every cent

M.2 is just a form factor it has nothing to do with speeed. NVMe is the interface specification, which is often associated with the M.2 form factor. However, an M.2 could very easily only support SATA 3 speed.

I have both an Xbox one x and a gaming pc with a i7 6700k and gtx 1060 and I have no preference, all depends on my mood if you want something that you can just sit down grab your controller relax and play some games with some friends then an Xbox is for you but if you’re really serious about every single frame and want to sit at a desk all the time with a keyboard and mouse granted a mouse is much more accurate than a controller but for me the comfort and ease of access is what matters to me I’d rather just turn on my Xbox and start playing a game instead of waiting for my pc to load up and then go through the many different game stores ex. Steam, origin, Microsoft store then waiting for the game to load

I would love to see you do a follow-up to this video. Take the actual Xbox One X drive out of the console, and format it. Honestly, more like the year 2000. 7200RPM drives were about the only platter drives that made any sense once they were released. It's ridiculous that Apple, for example, is STILL using 5400RPM drives in all their $2000+ base models. If you don't pay out the nose to upgrade them when buying, then you get a $2000-$4000 potato!

I took a usb external drive, unscrewed it, swapped the hdd for a ssd drive, turned my xbox on and let the system format it. Had no issue with it, very happy with my upgrade👍
It took me about 3 minutes to copy nfs heat from the internal hdd to the ssd I was amazed how quickly it installed.

Oh sorry, i mean Microsoft Xbox Series One.......which is a bit of a conflict as it is not the first one in the Xbox series, which is a bit confusing to me, even though this is running a custom AMD CPU/GPU combo i think that the people at Microsoft have been taking naming lessons from Intel (don't get me wrong, i love Intel CPU's but when you start calling your processors Core i9-10900 XE or some other tongue twisting name then you end up confusing more people then helping them, especially considering that the Core i9-9900KS Unlocked Special Edition is a generation behind and its faster than the i9-10900 XE) so seriously Microsoft....they should have stuck to their guns and kept the Project Scarlet name but it is pretty obvious that the corporate VIPs decided to play marketing name games with this product.....who wants to see if the name changes again before launch???

Yo man, best video on the topic at hand in years. The fact before getting into the main video... You touched on how other options for a SSD Xbox One X install. You are able to install one internally(replacement) like you said, Awesome you confirmed for me that internal install does require cloning(offical sizes, scrpit install with the 5 microsoft partions) making an external application off SDD to Xbox a more then fine option until we get them in the next console.
Since before the X was released ive used a 7200 2tb HHD for quicker load times. The main thing I noticed was my early Destiny days. The Upgraded hard drive helped in raids alone from load time saves. Meaning even bringing up the "Start Screen" (Armor/consumables) would almost load instantly allowing for quick ammo popping/ weapon swithing compared to the Normal 5400 rpm HDD, there was some lag with items taking a bit to load in the slots.
P.S. I think you also only one to "admit" the X has a 5400 RPM HDD. Lol
I see many benchmark SSD vs the normal harddrive on Xbox One X but with external, you are limiting your bandwidth through USB 3.0. Plugging it in internally would give it a significant upgrade. Not only performance but in terms of heat and noise levels as well.
Please please please test internal SSD as well. I've been considering opening mine and installing a SSD, but I've read so many conflicting reports on improvements.

I can't forsee MS and Sony _not_ upgrading to either an SSHD or HDD + Optane standard for their next consoles. Even considering manufacturing costs, it just wouldn't make sense.
Unless you go with an AMD solution which would almost be guarenteed at this point to prohibit an optane. But an ssd boot device would be nice.

All you have to do is go to xbox website and download the osu onto a flash drive then extract it plug it into xbox with new drive and install offline update its actually quite easy
Recently replaced my internal. I wasn't interested in saving anything so I tossed it in and then did an offli e update to setup the ssd.
After that login and setup...
Use a external to backup anything and copy it back over once done.

The load times are still pretty bad tbh. Definitely better, but they can only help so much when the CPU is abysmally bad.
I was going to say something about that. The consoles not having modern storage is one thing, but I think the severely aged CPU cores in there is worse. Most games are single core speed limited for loading too (though I've started to come across a handful that actually make full use of many cores), and I think the Xbox One X with it's 2.4Ghz or whatever Jaguar cores is a pretty severe bottleneck.
Indeed. This was very apparent to me on the PC side when I switched from AMD FX8350 to Ryzen 5 1600x a year ago. I still use the same SSD but the loading times improved just by switching CPU.
GurtTarctor I mean let's put just HOW bad the CPU is into perspective: speaking nothing of the massive architectural advantages, my T-SKU'd *35W* TDP Skylake i7 has a higher base clock than even the chip in the X, which is essentially the chip in the original One/PS4/Pro, just with the guts overclocked out of it, and then several other internal organs for good measure. Which is... really not great to be honest. Don't get me wrong, overclocking is fine and all, but it will only net you real gains comparative to wear on your chip/power envelope increase up to a certain point, and I'd say we're far past that point.
The reality is, even at the launch of the baseline hardware years ago, Jaguar was something I would struggle to even have said HAD a "last leg" to stand on. Now... it's 2018, Jaguar needs to go. It should have gone already.
Although I do agree that the Xbox One X's processer is very slow compared to your typical CPU on a desktop, you guys need to remember that consules are not really designed for multi-tasking and the fact that most consule games play at 30 FPS.

DrearierSpider1 may want to look harder as seen a several videos and several article on this and next to no improvement on load of NVME v SSD. Even seen RAID NVME used with little improvement. The problem becomes bottlenecks elsewhere in your system.

Chiriac Puiu Ya, the little data I've seen out there certainly suggests that. Plus with 50GB install sizes being the norm (and many more games approaching or reaching 100GB, like FFXV and Nioh), you're way better off investing that extra cost into capacity vs speed. The improvement of SATA SSD's over HDD's seems to come entirely from reduced latency and seek times, and game engines aren't utilizing the ridiculous speeds of NVMe anywhere close to their fullest.
Steve, would it be possible to repeat the test with a PS4 pro with the same games (except PUBG of course)? I realize there are a lot of vids for PS4 pro out already. But they mostly cover older games. Your selection is much more actual.
Another question: What about drive wear down caused by the constant game recording feature? Wouldn't it be better to use an SSD only externally since the internal drive is always used for game recording (at least on PS4 afaik)
Thorsten Metzler Modern SSDs will be fine. You can do your own research but many drives can write Petabytes of data before outright failure. They will still write hundreds of thousands Terabytes of data before they start losing storage.
SSD's are great and all but... after waiting for many years; the price per gig still sucks compared to hard disks.
But that's because HDDs are getting way cheaper than they were a few years ago. Probably due to the end of the HDD shortage that was present a few years ago.
I would be more concerned with RAM prices.

I cloned my X1X hard drive with no problem. I simply pulled it out of my console and popped it and the new SSD of the same capacity into a Sabrent standalone disk cloning device and just hit 1 button. BOOM! Direct clone done in 3 hours. Popped the SSD back into the console, closed it up, and fired it up. No muss no fuss.

I replaced my internal HDD with a Samsung 860 SSD, and used ActiveBoot Sector-per-Sector Copy to the SSD from the HDD, and it works flawlessly. The Game and overall Console performance, is 10 to 20 times better than with the original stock drive.

would a SHDD work with the xbox one? if so the value would be much better spent there. i just got a hybrid drive for 60 canadian dollars. a terabyte of storage and all my games load at least twice as fast with some games like skyrim special edition now taking only 2 seconds or less to load the majority of interiors and like 5 seconds tops to load a big area. meanwhile a terabyte ssd would cost like 500ish give or take. and the difference between a hybrid drive and a pure ssd is not worth it to me anymore.

And in the end getting a terabyte of faster than hard drive storage is better than getting 120 gb of storage that is faster than that but still can cost more at that amount of storage. And if you want the same amount. Of storage. Its like almost ten times more expensive. Is that even worth it? Thats the question to ask yourself. Especially since your paying for nothing more than load times for your games and if your on pc your os.
Supposedly the Xbox one X has a Integrated 8gb non volatile cache on-board when Microsoft was comparing it the the base model. Which was added to reduce load times over the base console

It'll improve if read and write is faster than the speeds limited by USB 3.0. It may not be a huge difference I imagine, probably pretty similar. I did it just so I don't have to have an extra drive floating around outside the console. Even if your drive was the fastest drive possible, it many games aren't optimized to take advantage of those faster drives speeds so it will improve greatly, but only to a certain point. At a certain point you're spending unnecessary money on an expensively fast drive which speeds won't be used very much.
For kicks and gigs next time, compare an HDD against an NVMe + Optane drive setup.

Here is the thing, so I work in IT at a small town bank, there is me and my boss in my department lol, but anyway, we have SSDs in everything here, and yes it is impressive how fast they are and how quickly they boot up, BUT SSDs literally have a ticking clock until the die and sometimes it does not take very long, especially if you don't configure your OS right. I have seen good SSDs go down within 2 years or less because of Windows for example. Here is the thing, unless you are a super impatient person and literally every second of waiting is an unbearable pain for you, there is not a good reason to buy an expensive SSD over a reliable hard drive, I don't even own an SSD at home, I have gamed from hard drives my whole life and never had an issue. A good mechanical drive can outlast a SSD if taken care of and is so much cheaper if you have a large game library like me, I literally have a 6TB drive with 5TB dedicated to my games lol. My computer boots in less than a minute and still takes less than a minute to launch anything.
I feel like for average use SSDs are fine reliability wise for most. I have had an SSD in my laptop for the past 4 years or so and have had no issues with it but I absolutely love the speed. It’s a 512gb proprietary unit (MacBook Pro) but it has really made the computer feel fast. I currently have an Xbox one X and do wish it was easier to upgrade the HDD to an SSD because loading times for Forza Horizon 4 are absolutely atrocious with the HDD. About two minutes or more to launch the game and get to your car. It’s pretty much the only device I use now that still has an HDD.
I understand that. I make a regular backup especially before and after I install a new game, then make a backup every month so I don't have to worry too much. I also clone my ssd's aftet 2 to 2.5 years of use to new ones. Just in case.
The Xbox One 1TB Elite sku has a 1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive that only slightly improved load times on it's SATA2 interface

@@stuart4176 I just got a normal SATA ssd, that'd you'd install in a PC. The adapter is like $8 on ebay, and whenever you plug it in the Xbox will ask if you want to set it up for games or media, pick games, and it should work fine.

one test that would be really good to test the difference between the speeds of the two is hopping into your inventory screen in destiny 2 in the middle of a crucible match to swap weapons.... it takes upwards of 30 seconds normally to load up all of your weapons and armor, which more often than not, ends with your death before you can swap weapons around...

Suggestion for PC follow up: where is the loading bottleneck? I've tried to optimised my system for FFXIV using its Stormblood benchmark for reference. Hopefully not as flawed as the FFXV benchmark! Anyway, it reports load times as well as fps. Big jump from HD to SSD as expected, but the change in load times from SATA SSD, to NVMe SSD, to Optane, to ramdisk wasn't as great as hoped, especially for the last 3. Do we need faster CPUs? GPUs? Or something else?
I have done the internal replacement on my Xbox One X and used a 1TB SSD I had and had no problems with copy protection at all. Just ran a full sector by sector clone. Haven't had any trouble with it over the last couple of months since I did it. Was I supposed to?

Steve, the internal sata bus is not true sata 3. it actually is closer to sata 2 speeds. the ps4 is the same way. Using an internal hdd or ssd will always be faster on current gen consoles than any storage device used internally
As much as I love using an SSD for my games, it's too expensive to only use SSDs, I have 1 500GB SSD where I keep my single player games that I play on a regular basis (which really helps with the load times). Everything else goes on a HHD, but that one is almost full as well.

Wish the PS4 (non pro) had a sata III interface.... Unfortunately, it only has Sata || and I still upgraded to an SSD and the results were still AMAZING. Don't sleep on an SSD upgrade...
continuous read times will def be better. But you will really see and increase when multiple processes are going on at the same time. Example, Open dashboard while in game to join party with no lag time. This is due to the much fast read time on the ssd.

Loadout drops would lag when opening them up to select class - SSD will fix that issue
Loadout Icons/operators not loading in main menu(sluggish) - SSD will fix that issue

Great info thanks. I have been trying to decide if I wanted to put an SSD on my XB1X or not. I think I would probably go the external route though as not to void any warranty. My launch day XB1X already died after 4 months the HDMI output stopped working though I could still stream connect to it from my PC so it was working just not the HDMI output. Makes me not want to open it up even though it is easy to do.
I bought an SSD External Rosewill harddrive to help load textures in PUBG on xbox one x. For me, the textures pop in at a noticable level. Also, I no longer get stuck I'm buildings because the textures load as soon as you jump.
