An alternative option when reloading the OS - it is possible to re-image the Xbox without holding down the Bind and Eject (and without wiping the NAND memory) which will save gamer accounts - simply install the drive, boot up (without holding the Bind and Eject) and you will see a System Error E106 screen - select Trouble Shooting and then Offline Update (with the USB stick connected) - this method will save your gamer account information while still re-initialising the new hard drive (although games will still need to be reinstalled).

How did you do with transferring over the xbox start up video? Did you add it to the USB drive? Or do you plan on taking the SSD out and adding it manually?
I know it has been a couple of years for this video but I just did the upgrade and wanted to add a little something. I was getting error E101 during the update process, and after taking the drive out and copying the files many times I read on google that the problem could be the USB drive I was using to run the update from. After trying 3 different brands of USB I was finally able to get it to work properly using a maxell 16gb drive. 1 more thing to add is that the OSU that you download doesn't have the Xbox boot screen, you can either live with that or you can grab it off the old drive and place it on the USB and bob's your uncle. Great video as always.
I did this a couple of weeks ago with instrictions from iFixit, after my One X was refusing to boot with the original HDD and couldn't even install a new image on it. Internet says it's more likely a power supply issue that keeps corrupting the hard drive, but fingers crossed... it's worked so far. Edit: Oh yeah, I must have spent 10 minutes at 17:00, figuring out how to put the top cover on. If you got it wrong, you really had to wrench it out to try again. I was sure I was going to break it.
Bear in mind that every time you perform an offline system update you’ll lose the boot animation/splash screen as the file is not included, however it is included on the monthly online system update, or you could also add it manually but it’s not worth it in my opinion.
Indeed. I copied my boot animation from the outgoing drive, but to be fair the series x boot animation isn't something someone is going to miss, particularly if they have a great sound system... Yeah, I've done THAT at 2 in the morning 🤣 Edit: whoops, I ment one x. The series x boot animation is far easier on the ears, and neighbours lol
@@Robm_ph no sorry, I said series out of error. I actually ment to say the one x boot animation. I've had a quick look however, and can't seem to find it online either
It works and if you are doing using SSD 1 Tera byte that's fine. This new update will recognize the 1 terabyte instead of the former update that only was recognizing 500gb.
I did the swap , thanks for this video! I wasn't aware, but the Xbox One X won't format the drive correctly unless it's exactly 500gb or 1000gb. I wasn't aware of this, you probably said it in the video. I installed a 960GB drive and it formatted as though it was a 500gb leaving 365gb useable. So I took it apart again using your video and installed a 500gb.
Dude your teardown and instructions on how to do this was spot on. I purchased a drive yesterday for my xbox one x. I got the drive today and already installed it. Currently downloading all my games as we speak! Good video man. Subscribed! 10 stars!
Its interesting the different approaches from Sony & Microsoft. With the PS3, PS4 & PS5 (expansion slot at least) the storage is very easily accessable, with no warranty stickers broken to replace that part. Arguably you could also include the PS2, with its expansion slot HDD. Its good that you can still remove HDDs on the Xbox One consoles, but its obvious the console build design wasn't planned with users easily replacing that part. The 360 models were easier to replace, but if you used a third party 2.5" drive I believe it required some preparation with files on HDD etc. Whereas on PS3 & PS4, pop in any 2.5" SATA HDD or SSD, grab a USB for reinstallation file and you are good to go. I swapped a 1TB Crucial MX500 into my base PS4 at the end of 2020. Despite that model PS4 being limited to SATA2, it is still a good upgrade over my old 1TB HDD. Typically load times are reduced by about a 3rd (eg 1m rather than 1m30s) but some games, like 'Death Stranding', loading the same save from main menu was about 1/2 the HDD speed (SSD 36.81s vs 66.19s HDD). Along with general system performance (the PS4 UI is comparatively pretty sluggish on HDD), improved response when taking video clips, some texture load improvements etc. All in, I've been very happy with the result. I think I swapped my PS3 HDD once or twice. I started on a 80GB drive in my 'phat' and when my 2nd PS3 died (yeah 2nd), it was on a 320GB HDD. I replaced my dead 'super slim' PS3 with a used, but boxed slim 160GB and just left the original HDD in there. I still have the 320GB drive, I use it as a spare backup drive in a USB 3.0 enclosure. I used a 640GB HDD in an enclosure, old drive from my old laptop for backup, when I swapped the PS4 internal drives. It allowed me to copy most of my installed games over, saving me from having to reinstall discs, and the PS4s old 1TB HDD is also now in an enclosure and is basically a data mule for the SSD, as its relatively quick to copy things back & forth.
I got a Ps4 slim at the beginning of 2022 for a killer deal and have been thinking of putting an SSD in it because it will make it faster and it’s super simple. About 2 weeks ago I bought an Xbox One X that I thought just needed to update offline for another awesome deal but going through the process of using the usb I got for the SSD upgrade in my PlayStation and it didn’t work. I’m either going to by an SSD and try to make my Xbox One X work, and better than it did originally but if it doesn’t work I would’ve have wasted money buying an SSD because I’ll just put it in my PlayStation.
@@retrochi71 The USB stick didn't work with the XB1X? You tried all the USB ports? Not sure about Xbox, but for the PS4 when using the update file and console reinstallation files, Sony's guide page specifically mention using FAT32 formatting on the USB (along with specific file & folder names). Maybe the Xbox needs that, or possibly exFAT formatting. Alternatively, if possible you could try another USB stick. Hopefully you'll be able to work it out, good luck with both consoles. If you do run into issues, the reddit for PS4 & XB1 could be a useful place to ask.

This was the best video on the topic and helped so much. I've spent the past 4 hours fiddling with shit trying to re-format shit on my computer, downloading shit and messing with coding. All I had to do was slap 'er in. I feel like such a fool. Great video!
Someone asked me if I could do this upgrade to his Xbox One X. I told him when I learn how to do that I will call him. Guess what I just learned. Thanks Graham.
I am really glad I found this video. I have been thinking about replacing our old reliable 360, and while the Series X is a beast, it seems it's not so easy to connect to legacy TV's (use our 360 on a 55" 1080p Panasonic Viera THX Plasma) and receivers (in my case, a 2006 Marantz SR7500). The Series X are also still very expensive here in Canada and because of this, I have been thinking of finding a second-hand One X. Partially because they allow optical audio out, and also because they are $200-275 used now. I would view this as more of a console evolution (a bridge before getting say, an LG OLED TV and compatible AVR to use with a Series X down the road) and knowing you can SSD swap a One X makes this seem like an even better idea. Excellent video Sir, and I will use it as a reference for when/if I grab a One X, and want to hotrod it!
To follow-up, I did buy a one-owner, casually used One X for around $200, and I have just bought a WD Blue SA510 1tb SSD (everywhere near me was sold out of the Crucial units, and the computer shop said the WD is totally on par). I am hoping I can do the same thing...just swap the drive, and download and install the Offline System Update files like this video and call it a day. If all goes well, I will come back and let you, and your viewers know.
@13:00 if it's never been open and you've had it since launch or bought one from eBay do a repaste regardless it takes away any chance of overheating and gets rid of the Tim that has surely turned into concrete / Chalk by now. It'll prolong the life of this console a lil longer.
Great job on the little details like flat vs rounded screws to release the lower chassis as well as how to get the top cover back on without the need for maidens or firstborns. Two things I would make note of are 1. as far as clearing dust, an air compressor should only be used if you know it has dehumidified air, as rust spatting can be a consequence of a poorly maintained compressor; and 2. the flash drive is supposed to be formatted as NTFS to the best of my knowledge. Worst case for dusting, you can use an unused paint brush and get it pretty well. I got my cousin's One X torn down and tested only to find that it's a retimer chip that went stupid :/ I have all of the soldering tools needed except for an adequate heat gun, which I haven't the budget for at this moment (aiming for the Quick that Louis Rossmann recommends).
Replacing parts in the One X or just clean it, is one of the most easiest things. For myself Im cleaning the cooling fan right now and will replace the thermal pads for the CPU and put some new thermal paste on it.
#1, if you lag on streaming video/youtube, this will help huge. I was only able to stream in 420p without buffering, i can hit 720p now. Not to mention things load faster and it runs much smoother for sure.
I use to solely use MX500's or BX500's in SSD upgrades a good offerable drive, but after the treatment, I got as a business doing a warranty claim (The claim was for a 2TB drive that was misreporting hrs on & TBW, latest firmware & Crucial Storage Executive) for a business client of mine recently with phone calls to America from Australia as they wouldn't respond to email contact, I now refuse to promote their products & only use Samsung SSD's although their Samsung Magician software doesn't work very well on most older pc systems in my experience why I don't know on modern systems all's good.
This guide was great, but I wanted to mention a hiccup I had. Initially I did not have the option to update offline from the first USB drive I used. This is a known working drive, but the Xbox wanted nothing to do with it. I used an old 16gb USB 2.0 stick I had laying around and it worked right away. So if the option is grayed out for you at first, try a different drive.
Customer had their saves in the cloud, so clean-install was fine. Old HDD, tbh I'd scrap it. IMHO, hard drives aren't good for anything these days. SSDs are affordable.
Thank god microsoft allows for easy drive swapping with the newest software version. I remember you had to download a tool to format and add OS files onto your replacement drive before putting it into the console.
Oh wow. I was worried about that. I'm glad I watched this video and saw this comment in particular. I just canceled a order for a sata3 to usb. U just saved me 10$ man! Lolz
PS4 is easier to upgrade to SSD. Was it not possible to copy the data from the old drive to a extern drive and after you doen the install. Put the old data in the SSD?
Have still yet to look into this, but my advice is to clean-install if possible, as you can make sure there's no junk or gremlins hanging around. Cloning might not be an option if the old drive has failed as well. If you _need_ to preserve all installed games / saves, then cloning would definitely be the way forward though, yes.
I have a question. How are you able to record the screens of computers you are testing? I know that you are using a capture card to do that but is there any program you use in order for it to show up on the computer you are using to record?
I record everything into OBS Studio, which can capture basically anything connected to the computer. You can either switch scenes while recording (just like how a streamer switches consoles, welcome, brb scenes) or what I do is record in 4k, with four 1080p streams in a 2x2 grid, then at editing I split it into 4x 1080p videos and then I can 'switch cameras' in editing as if it had all been recorded separately.
Quick question I've been all over the internet. I'm trying to figure out what the maximum size of an SSD drive for the one x ? 🤔 Could I install a 4tb SSD and follow these instructions and still work.
i just recently got that SSD for my pc as an upgrade from a 1TB WD HD. cant say ive noticed my pc start faster or anything but im sure it does... seriously tempted to do same for my xbox one but likely will wait till i need to open it for cleaning or something. just glad there is the option and a vid covering it to be honest.
I have an Xbox One I got from my nephew, it would crash a lot, then would go to green screen and stick on start up. He ended up getting a new Xbox one X. I pulled the hard drive out of the xbox one, ran a HDD test program on it on my pc and found it was indeed Bad. I orderd a new 1TB ssd for maybe a hair over $100. Installed it into the xbox one, had to use a thumb drive to upload a file to the xbox so it would format the new SSD and now the xbox one runs better than it did when it was new and loads game much faster than my nephews xbox one x. When his warranty runs out I will put a SSD in his.
The default setting for USB pens in windows is write caching disabled so you do not need to use safely eject, just yank it out :-) You only really need to use safely eject if you have enabled write caching (Better performance)!
I see people loose their data far too often to roll those dice! I know that with write caching off, the chances of something happening are super slim, but it's good practise to just always safely eject. Takes two seconds to click the safe-remove button.

Yes but it's better to get a clean install, as the files are set for said storage capacity from the previous drive and other stuff that just makes this impractical, it works, but it's better to just let the xbox set the ssd completely new

Best tutorials explained to 100. New subscriber without a doubt.
Dude same thing, I had to back up and rewatch video.
Thanks for the video, just put a Crucial 2TB SSD in my One X. Cheers!
Great video. This was a lot easier than I would have thought. Thanks for taking your time and explaining what you were doing along the way.
Yeah, I've done THAT at 2 in the morning 🤣
Edit: whoops, I ment one x. The series x boot animation is far easier on the ears, and neighbours lol
This happened to me when I upgraded my One X. A few days later the animation was back without me doing anything. Good times.
@@YouNameItGaming Hi ! did you find the Series X boot animation dat file ? if yes can you share it please ?
@@Robm_ph no sorry, I said series out of error. I actually ment to say the one x boot animation.
I've had a quick look however, and can't seem to find it online either
@@YouNameItGaming is it possible to get the One X animation on the One S for example though? Maybe it'll work but just wipe with the next update
It works and if you are doing using SSD 1 Tera byte that's fine. This new update will recognize the 1 terabyte instead of the former update that only was recognizing 500gb.
I forgot how calming are your videos to me! Thank you for continuing to post content.
This worked to perfection. Clear and precise instructions. Thanks Mate!
how’s the performance been since?
@@SimplyTrashed excellent. fast load times now.
Just did this upgrade tonight. It worked perfect. Thanks for the video.
Nicely done video. Detailed, yet concise and it worked with no surprises.

Bit late to this party, but you just saved me $50 at the local repair shop to upgun my X1X to a 2TB SSD. Hitting the Patreon to show my appreciation.
Did this for my model and at least I know that even if it's not as fast as what the new consoles do with SSD's, I alt least know the SSD will last longer than the stock hard drive
Late to the game but just did this with a 2TB SSD Sandisk and works like a champ. Thank you! I really love the ability to still play 3d movies on the xbox one s and x and the optical for stereo connections directly from the machine vs hdmi splitting audio from video.
what brand/type of flash drive did you use? I know im using a 3.0 PNY flash drive w/ 16gb of space, formatted to NTFS..but the "offline update" selection is blurred out and I cannot scroll over to it. thanks

I thought the HDD was married to the board and such. Thanks for this video, mate. I think I can repair an old console I have lying down somewhere, with this.
This was the best video on the topic and helped so much. I've spent the past 4 hours fiddling with shit trying to re-format shit on my computer, downloading shit and messing with coding. All I had to do was slap 'er in. I feel like such a fool. Great video!

Thanks for the extra tutorial about how to download and reinstall software. Will buy an SSD and come back to your video for reference.

Thanks a lot! My Xbox is up and running again after years of misery
Can confirm. Have that exact SSD for my (PC) games. Cheap (enough) at around 100 bucks for 1TB, and games load quickly enough.
Best tutorial, I just swapped mine now installing the games. (1 terra Twinmos ssd)
Loving your content at the moment
this video was brilliant as much as i only play pc it will help one day if a mate wants me to do a repair for him like this one. brilliant work :)
you are a miracle man, thanks for everything.
@13:00 if it's never been open and you've had it since launch or bought one from eBay do a repaste regardless it takes away any chance of overheating and gets rid of the Tim that has surely turned into concrete / Chalk by now. It'll prolong the life of this console a lil longer.
Plus a repaste is a good 'while you're in there' thing to do as well.
Excellent video Adamant IT.
Thank you.👍👍👏👏
Extremely informative video. Great job
Great video Graham, nice work
Replacing parts in the One X or just clean it, is one of the most easiest things.
Well done mate.
Graham Lord .. love it 👍
I just watched all of this and I don't even have an Xbone! Interesting all the same :)
Hi thank you. I did this step by step put a Samsung sdd in my Xbox one x download the software all work brilliant. Easy to follow
Was the process simple to do?😮
Yes just follow the video. Pretty easy
Thaanks! I just finished it and my Xbox is alive again!! I thought I lost it.! I just bought a series s and am glad I have 4k back!

Xbox更换固态硬盘非常详细,学习到了 ,支持一下。
You can always install external usb 3 ssd and an internal ssd for best performance.
So if the option is grayed out for you at first, try a different drive.
what kind of usb drive did you use initially?

I did this for my Xbox too and while it does work well with games, I love have a speedy media streaming box in my room.
Was there anything on the old HDD? What about save games? What are you going to do with the HDD?
Customer had their saves in the cloud, so clean-install was fine. Old HDD, tbh I'd scrap it. IMHO, hard drives aren't good for anything these days. SSDs are affordable.
Thank god microsoft allows for easy drive swapping with the newest software version. I remember you had to download a tool to format and add OS files onto your replacement drive before putting it into the console.
Oh wow. I was worried about that. I'm glad I watched this video and saw this comment in particular. I just canceled a order for a sata3 to usb. U just saved me 10$ man! Lolz
@@TheCoJackProject While I haven't confirmed myself it definitely seems like it's much easier now. Curious how it goes for you!
PS4 and PS4 pro thermal paste both went bad on me at end of warranty period. Going this deep it makes sense to replace.
'Rust' is a game that loves an SSD.. loads in 1 minute vs 10 minutes off a HDD 😂
It rhymes
Why not imaging the existing HDD and writing it to the SSD?
Sometimes you are replacing the HDD because it has errors. I am not sure if cloning works on the xbox HDD swap. .
What do you think about the samsung 870 QVO for the xbox one x? I know that the EVO is a better drive but would it be worth it for a console?
PS4 is easier to upgrade to SSD. Was it not possible to copy the data from the old drive to a extern drive and after you doen the install. Put the old data in the SSD?
thank you well explained
Ok I was doing this step by step but after doing the offline install and first time assistant I'm only getting a black screen after reboot. any ideas?
Wouldnt cloning the old drive onto the SSD be easier?
Have still yet to look into this, but my advice is to clean-install if possible, as you can make sure there's no junk or gremlins hanging around. Cloning might not be an option if the old drive has failed as well.
If you _need_ to preserve all installed games / saves, then cloning would definitely be the way forward though, yes.
@@Adamant_IT Do you still have the typical One X boot animation after your clean install?
Thanks for your helpful video!
what about the games installed on the old HDD? Is there any method to put everyting from the old HDD to the SSD?
Great video.
Did you add the boot sceen file?
I clone to a SSD and offline update doesn't work and it only starts up fully booting to home page when I put the old drive back in.
Just done mine, found out the hard drive needs to be blank before putting it in. I reused an SSD that had win 10 on it and kept getting errors.
When you did the offline system update with usb flash drive what kind of usb you used 2.0 or 3.0?
2TB is the max capacity an Xbox will support internally.
Wouldnt it be easier just to clone the xbox hdd to the ssd and plug it in?
thank you for your video, I'll go ahead and do what you did, and hope it works for me, wish me luck.
Trying to put the ribbon back was an nightmare for me when reassembling it

i just recently got that SSD for my pc as an upgrade from a 1TB WD HD. cant say ive noticed my pc start faster or anything but im sure it does... seriously tempted to do same for my xbox one but likely will wait till i need to open it for cleaning or something. just glad there is the option and a vid covering it to be honest.
Is the OS on the SSD though?
The default setting for USB pens in windows is write caching disabled so you do not need to use safely eject, just yank it out :-)
You only really need to use safely eject if you have enabled write caching (Better performance)!
I see people loose their data far too often to roll those dice! I know that with write caching off, the chances of something happening are super slim, but it's good practise to just always safely eject. Takes two seconds to click the safe-remove button.
Hey I recently done this but without wiping the nand memory, it runs normal tho except missing xbox splash screen and my gamerpicture wont show up either?

Not sure if this is an old thread but I've just bought a used Xbox one X which was disgusting inside and decided to upgrade to an ssd aaaand no joy.. purchased a new kingston 960gb and that didn't work and then tried a crucial bx1tb and that failed to work.. i purchased a new 32gb 3.0 thumb drive which i quick formatted to NTFS and downloaded the recommended offline unzipped file and followed the instructions but after 1percent of running the system update the update failed tried it several times but gave up in the end and just re installed the original harddrive.. 😞😞
Can you simply “clone” via an external HDD/SSD drive caddy as well, rather then manually downloading the MS XBox drive software?
yes
Yes but it's better to get a clean install, as the files are set for said storage capacity from the previous drive and other stuff that just makes this impractical, it works, but it's better to just let the xbox set the ssd completely new
Hello. Is the gameplay also faster with ssd?
Possibly a silly question but, does this install the One X variant of the dash?
i tried this last week but my xbox kept kicking the update off, would that be because of a faulty ssd by any chance?
