@@ElectronicsComputers Probably mainly because the storage isn't what's holding the One X back in the first place. This is wild. I work in an electronics repair shop, and I was talking with another of the techs about this after I noticed there appeared to be pads for an NVMe slot on the board. I always wondered if I stumbled across some schematics on the web, would I be able to add a slot to it. The 2 sets of cap pads to the right of the slot are data lines, and they're likely required. There's also some logic and resistors missing from around the same area that you installed the mosfet
It's possible there are missing midpoints for the data connection off the slot. You could potentially compare the general area of the board around the slot to the dev kit on both sides. Perhaps even be able to check continuity on the data lines from the slot to other areas on the board. The former would give you the best shot, especially if you could get your hands on a dev kit. It's awesome you put this to the test though!
Without having a schematic, reverse engineering is extremely time-consuming. I've checked the data line with the scope, and I'm pretty sure that the problem lies somewhere there rather than with some firmware limitations. One missing tiny capacitor or resistor could make a huge difference.

Try getting dev mode activated the dev consol has the ssd slot mabe the consol will see it only in dev since it was never ment for users to have an ssd slot
As previously commented, I have to applaud your meticulous work applying the slot. However, since no Microsoft video game console after the Xbox 360 has been successfully "hacked" (in large part because of the popularity of using Dev Kit mode to run homebrew and "less than legal" software), there isn't an obvious route to force the console to actually look at the new slot. Still, beautiful work.
Maybe you need the sata drive as primary storage and can just install games on nvme? have you tried with both ssd in it? i found out that the nvme drive is populated on the dev kits for faster storage.
Such a cool video, I had no idea there was an unpopulated m.2 pad on the board! I did want to point out that it seems you've picked up the American pronunciation of 'solder' as 'sodder.' It's quite common to pick up different pronunciations and this one is particularly widespread due to American media. However, it's worth noting that in most English-speaking regions, the word is pronounced 'sol-der' . It's a small detail but can be significant in globally reaching content. Not a biggie but just thought you might appreciate the feedback. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for the comment! It would be weird if I had picked up any other pronunciation while living in the US. But of course, I know that outside the US and Canada it is pronounced differently.
the problem i see is that the hardware is okay, but maybe the software dosn't support it. my solution would be to mod the console too see it, if we could...
My theory is the M.2 slot is likely either: -only accepts M.2 SATA drives (knowing the age of the APU's generation) -whitelisted to specific drives like the Xbox Series consoles
You can use any 2.5" SATA to M.2 adapter. I have a video on that: th-cam.com/video/SyOOFrBWKsU/w-d-xo.html That adapter doesn't affect your SSD's speed. All it does, apart from physically adapting the form factor, is convert 5 volts into 3.3 volts.
To solder M.2 slots, USB ports and some small components with unleaded solder a set mu Quick 861 station to 300-350C and about 30-40% air. For big mosfets and ICs I can go higher up to 400C and 50% air. For desoldering components especially mosfets I set my station to 490C and 50-60% air to quickly remove them.

Xbox officially supports 500GB, 1TB and 2TB SSDs/HDDs. You can install a 4TB drive but the console will recognize it as a 2TB one. So after an offline update you'll have to manually extend the "user content" partition to maximum available space to allocate the whole drive capacity. I have a video on how to upgrade or replace the SSD in Series S|X and One S|X to.
what does that have to do with this M.2 slot?? you are probably talking about replacing the shitty internal HDD with an SSD, like, everybody already knows and has done it
Big thumbs up for giving it a shot, would have been hilarious if you succeded and also made some serious waves.. but at the end of the day, its not that big a miss. running my One X with NVMe drives, as these 10Gbps enclosures a weirdly cheap, even those with displays are like sub20bucks and 2 TB NVMe drives, cost like 40 bucks so relative cheap to stack up in ext fast storage for One X.. tested loading times, vs Series X and running the exact same 4K games, where was no difference, even though its handled by a sata3 controller, those fast accestimes does wonders for pop in and loading times and frame time spikes. as far as I can tell One X will tolerate 4 different drives all at once, and you can even mix & match, so 30% of a game on one drive and 70% on another. seems One X will do 26TB SSD storage.. 2TB internal + 3x 8 TB external. Wouldnt have taken much for Microsoft, to populate that M2 slot and just let it be user-optional for upgrades.. but then again, such vendors, usually dont like to send such mixed signals not least hence warrenty etc..and having end-users digging around on the f''ing motherboard, and why they made it plug and play for Series X with that horrendous properitary drive std.. but its a blast to just use external SATA3 SSDs or NVMe SSD drives for One X now that ext. SSDenclosures are so cheap-.
@@SuperNerdAdamsGarage its these cheap SSD brands from China.. Ok try this. Remove all the Xbox one x software and remove sata drive and install series x/s software and watch what happens 😮😮😮 also double check all contact points between board and vnme....very very important you will need cooling sync on vnme...too
If as a feature it was officially removed then perhaps it would be redundant even if the solution had faster thruput. Otherwise it would just make more sense to tell Microsoft to please update their Xbox One and Xbox One X firmware to be compatible with 2TB, 4TB and 8TB HDD and SSD however they would probably just ignore such a request much like how they ignored the stupidity of their online log in requirements just to set up the Xbox One/X from a reformat or a new hard drive replacement kinda like they just expect their customers to dump the old console in the tech garbage bin and buy their new disposable bucket shaped console.
Xbox officially supports 500GB, 1TB and 2TB SSDs/HDDs. It's also not a problem to install 4GB ones with an extra step. I have a video on upgrading One X to SSD.
I saw your video on the Xbox One X to SSD but it was only for 1TB. I read conflicting information about installing a 2TB SSD in the Xbox One X that calls for using scripts which sounds ridiculous. On my PS4 Pro and base PS4 I can just purchase from a 512GB SSD to 1TB to 2TB to 4TB and Digital Foundry has a video from years ago where they used an industrial grade 8TB SSD in the PS4 Pro... yet for Microsoft it's jumping through hoops to open the system up just to change the HDD from the puny 1TB to a more reasonable 2TB or if you have a large collection of games to a 4TB plus the fact that Microsoft's firmware kinda gets in the way in how they partition the drive space. Also I want to upgrade the original Xbox One from 500GB HDD to at least 1TB and use better quality thermal solution so maybe I'll make a video but it's just incredible how it seems like too many hoops need to be jumped over for Xbox One and Xbox One X. Basically I feel like the Microsoft Xbox One firmware is just incompetent or something idiotic like that. Like they intended for people to just dump their Xbox consoles to the garbage bin.
@apollosungod2819 Like I said before, Xbox One X officially supports 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB HHDs and SSDs. Just put it inside and install Xbox OS. If you install a 4TB drive, the console will recognize it as a 2TB one. Then you have to remove the drive from your console, connect to a computer, and use any software that works with partitions, extend the User Content partition to maximum available space. And that's it.
...why does the motherboard have all of the slots required and the heatsink have a space for an M.2 NVMe IT DOESN'T COME WITH? Were they THAT lazy in reusing the PS5's motherboard?
If I would be doing as you doing, I'd hate soldering SMD components as well. First for most, please learn about soldering paste. 2nd for most, they are easier to solder with a hot air. Third for most, please consider using T12 even a cheap soldering station for around 30 USD like QUICKO. Than we can talk soldering them ;).
Actually, I use soldering paste very often for tiny components and the one who invented that paste is real genius. Some videos I film in my office and some at home and I basically didn't have that paste with me.
Great job soldering the M.2 slot, it's a shame it didn't work. I'm pretty sure that you also need to hack the firmware in order to make the console detect the SSD. Same reason Xbox Series S/X won't work with 3rd party internal SSDs, as only the original model is whitelisted by the firmware, and why SSDs installed in the internal PS5 M.2 slot only started working after a system software update.
you could 100% make it work.... you didnt use the xbox drive flasshing software to format and create all the correct partitions and add the latest firmware update to the drive. you could also of just connect both the nvme and xbox drive, and clone one to the other and it shouldve done the same thing and just worked if it. please revist this and attempt as mentioned and if needed heres a tutorial fpor you to follow: th-cam.com/video/UJAz03fgMJA/w-d-xo.html if you do not wish to clone the drive to the nvme. hope this helps.

So thats how you use the wick.. all my life i just figured it out and thought i was good, now realize im good at soldering, but have a lot of catching up to do on the basics.
hi, i send you the link with schematics of xbox one x and the other xbox one and serie console, did you see it?
Nice video. I hope other tech persons can look into this too and see what xbox had in mind for these ports. The one x is a very good and future proof console if Microsoft chooses to give us hints
I'm still working on the part two. I hope we will make it work one day.
Nice video. What happen if you clone the original hdd of xbox to the m2ssd. I read that the xbox use a security code to hdd-s. My problem is, I bought an banned xbox one x. I did not found a worked jtag, I want to use it with my original cd games with offline mode… unformrtunatelly I can not game with it. I can order a used motherboars only to the banned console, and repleace …
@@ElectronicsComputersplease. Part 2
Try getting dev mode activated the dev consol has the ssd slot mabe the consol will see it only in dev since it was never ment for users to have an ssd slot
I want a sequel
As previously commented, I have to applaud your meticulous work applying the slot. However, since no Microsoft video game console after the Xbox 360 has been successfully "hacked" (in large part because of the popularity of using Dev Kit mode to run homebrew and "less than legal" software), there isn't an obvious route to force the console to actually look at the new slot. Still, beautiful work.
any news about it?
Maybe you need the sata drive as primary storage and can just install games on nvme? have you tried with both ssd in it?
i found out that the nvme drive is populated on the dev kits for faster storage.
Yes, I tried with both. I pretty sure I just missed some components, like a few tiny capacitors that need to be added to the board.
@@ElectronicsComputers 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮 part 2 please my console open no fitting 1 years open part 2 please

I think it should be Software related or some sorta Driver issue
My theory is the M.2 slot is likely either:
-only accepts M.2 SATA drives (knowing the age of the APU's generation)
-whitelisted to specific drives like the Xbox Series consoles
PCIE_M2 in schematic
You can use one on an xbox one x dev kit.
That's the point to make it work like a dev kit.
Project Definitely worth the praise.
The drive needs to be xbox filesystem i think
Would really love a follow up for this.
Nice work.
Thank you!
Where you find the caps?
So does it works With M2 SATA drive? What are a size and value of capacitors?
It works with M.2 Sata drive as long as you have Sata-M.2 adapter for the primary storage slot. The primary slot is the only one that works.
That m.2 slot is for the Xbox one x devkit
Did you manage tò make It work?
did you find the schematics oline of xbox one x?
Yep! Still working on the project.
thank you, i want to see if it's finally work@@ElectronicsComputers
Was wondering if you cloned the primary sata drive to the NVME if it would make a difference.
can you tell the value of the capacitors and microchip? thanks good video

Any updates?
Got mine working thanks.
Did you try bluetooth or wifi cards?
Nope! I'm still working on the final part of that project.
Could you provide your air gun setting??
To solder M.2 slots, USB ports and some small components with unleaded solder a set mu Quick 861 station to 300-350C and about 30-40% air. For big mosfets and ICs I can go higher up to 400C and 50% air. For desoldering components especially mosfets I set my station to 490C and 50-60% air to quickly remove them.
I put a 2tb full size ssd in mine a couple years ago, was a really nice upgrade, until I got my Series X
Why is there some residue on the board looks like someone spilled something over it at some point
Factory flux.
I notice you was using a NVMe can you try a different M.2 Sata
I got the same result with NGFF SSD.
What to do when the green board is broken ? Do you have a video on that
To cover all possible problems with the motherboard you'll need a whole bunch of videos. What's the problem with your console?
Interesting, didn't know the xbox one x had a spot on the motherboard for a m2 drive.
Hello, I saw an old video of you about altboot for a xerox printer, you could help me generate the 12-digit code since I did not work the altboot, I would appreciate it very much. ...
Unfortunately we don't service anymore Xerox stuff and I don't have access to that software. If had access I'd give that key without any hassle.
You need to use a microscope ...
At 5:18 you tell us that to solder this component you need a hot air station, so why do you even bother to show us that it is possible to use a solder iron when i need a hot air station to finish the project?
I wish you can do this on HP vitus 15 to see if it will work I will be rely happy if u so it❤. Because it has the same thing and no one have made a TH-cam video on it.

I have a one x that powers up for 30/45 seconds but nothing on screen and then shuts down again.. Someone said it may be my hd so gonna put a ssd in it and use your video thanks a bunch and hope you get your experiment to work!
Try to hard reset it first.
@@ElectronicsComputers Ive tried hard resetting before. It sat unplugged for 2 weeks tried again nothing it sat unplugged for 6 months and still a power up no display and then immediately powers back down
@mrbojangles155 Replacing the drive is not gonna help you in this situation. Most likely, it's a motherboard failure.

Whats the maximum hard drive ssd can i install would 4tb hard drive work?
Xbox officially supports 500GB, 1TB and 2TB SSDs/HDDs. You can install a 4TB drive but the console will recognize it as a 2TB one. So after an offline update you'll have to manually extend the "user content" partition to maximum available space to allocate the whole drive capacity. I have a video on how to upgrade or replace the SSD in Series S|X and One S|X to.

Would microsoft be helpful at all if you tried contacting them?
They would never do that.
The schematics got leaked afew years ago.
I hope I'll make it work in the second part.
Where on Earth are you getting 2TB drives for $40?
@@SuperNerdAdamsGarage its these cheap SSD brands from China.. KingFast, Netac etc etc. which are fine for storing games, movies etc etc
Purchased two different NVMe SSDs with 2TB NVMe to be fitted in external NVme to TypeC enclosures
*1x 2TB NVMe PCI3 3400MBs kIngfast 58 Euro ( incl both delivery and 25% EU/DKVAT) so people from fx the states without danish VAT it would be around 43 euro.
*1x 2TB NVMe PCI4 7500MBs kingfast 83 euro ( incl both delivery and 25% EU/DKVAT)
IF you just need SSD for a console... these older 2.5" SAT3 based SSD that peaks around 500MBs read/write are obviously cheaper.
Got them in juli 2023 and on sale and both drives are legit.
Ok try this. Remove all the Xbox one x software and remove sata drive and install series x/s software and watch what happens 😮😮😮 also double check all contact points between board and vnme....very very important you will need cooling sync on vnme...too
I'm too poor to ever try anything like this.
Great attempt and unlucky.
There will be a second part of the video and I hope we'll make it work.
Pro tip: clone the drive.
It's a software issue. Don't ask me how I know, lol.
Deep down i hope this would have worked 😅
Hi, have you or anyone tried doing this to a PS4 PRO?
Try it again properly.
@@ElectronicsComputers now makes more sense :), but, worth mentioning so others won't comment on that and waste your time ;).
El comentario mas actual 😂 esperando la 2parte
Te falto gamplay bro nvme test de velocidad

you could 100% make it work.... you didnt use the xbox drive flasshing software to format and create all the correct partitions and add the latest firmware update to the drive.
you could also of just connect both the nvme and xbox drive, and clone one to the other and it shouldve done the same thing and just worked if it. please revist this and attempt as mentioned and if needed heres a tutorial fpor you to follow: th-cam.com/video/UJAz03fgMJA/w-d-xo.html if you do not wish to clone the drive to the nvme. hope this helps.
