Nice! Another Di2 video! Looking good!
Personally, I suspect that you can update the 105 levers just like the Ultegra ones. Either using the SM-PCE02, or by wiring them to the rest of the system.
I just haven't been able to test that myself yet, since I don't have ST-R7170 at home to play with and there are no updates for ST-R7170 yet.
The reason Shimano say you can only use ST-R7170 wireless is because the SD300 port on them is on the side, and running them wired would mean poking a wire through the hood cover 🤣. I bet they'll let you update them through the app if you wire them to the system though. But yeah... let's wait and see :).
It's also good to know that there are TWO versions of the SM-PCE02. An older one, with only the EW-SD50 wire, and a more recent version with both SD50 and SD300 wires. Shane has the more recent version.
If you have the older one, you cannot just plug that into a 12-speed lever, since the SD50 plug won't fit. You would need either the EW-AD305 adapter + EW-SD300 wire, OR the new SD300 type link cable for the SM-PCE02. The part number for that last one is Y79M9801T

    • @BetterShifting
      @BetterShifting ปีที่แล้ว +4

Also... if you're thinking of buying the new SM-PCE02 link cable.... using the EW-AD305 adapter and EW-SD300 wire is A LOT cheaper. :)

Little bit of a rant here.. is Shimano out of their mind? This little box has a 254.95 EUR (245.99 USD) MSRP and than it comes with an already outdated Micro-USB interface? Oh, and it is sold out everywhere across EU online shops. Being the only way to update the lowest tier 105 Di2 STIs doesn't make any sense to me? I am the only one here? What is the reason Shimano kicks the Di2 users in the nuts like that?

Excellent. I updated mine a few months ago with the SM-PCE02 and it worked great. This video helped as I totally forgot the steps. Nice refresher. Yes, a little ridiculous paying for the PCE02 as it's not cheap and building a wire with the tiny plugs but once you get the set up you're good to go. It runs about $250 to get all the parts but it's either that or bringing it to a bike shop. I would rather do this myself as the shop is selling bikes and fitting. Thanks again.

As long as the shifters are wired to the battery, that would work.

For anyone happens to be here trying to figure out why E-Tube Project Professional doesn't work in a virtual machine (VM) hosted on macOS, unlike what Shane has shown in the video, please downgrade E-Tube Project Professional to V5.0.3. That is the last version that can work in a VM. With all newer version, you'll find after double click the icon, nothing simply happens. I have contacted Shimano twice regarding it, but I didn't get any response. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I HAD been contemplating spending the money for Di2 upgrade on my Canyon Endurace. I have zero desire for Di2 after watching this video.

This device exists many years... Primarly it was designed to 11sp Di2 because system can be without bluetooth module. The update over wire for shifters... NO comment :-D

As a new di2 user, i flabbergastet og just impressed by how utterly crappy shimano made the whole software side of di2. Jeeeeeeesus Christ its just utterly crap, compared to sram. 😂😂😂😂
Takes forever to Connect / handshake with the phone
Wireless shifters that need extra modules and pc and cables and bones to Update. What the actual fuck is the thought processs on that

This is a huge mistake by shimano! They are very far behind on wireless systems. The cable or device should have been included with the package!

You really should mention the risks and consequences of firmware update failure... The components become useless and, if outside warranty, Shimano doesn't have any responsibility to fix

Shimano component firmware recovery is pretty solid. See this exact topic covered in depth here: th-cam.com/video/_H3iNP-FDd0/w-d-xo.html
