  • One of many churches throughout the Todmorden Valley that no longer still stands was Mount Zion United Free Methodist Church which was located in Cornholme.
Built in 1854, it initially fell down in a storm and then destroyed by fire in 1867, before the church closed its doors a century later in 1968.
Little remains of the church itself today but the graveyard still exists.

I used to go to this church and to the Sunday school. I was also in the girls brigade there. Brings back a lot of memories.

Very kind. Thank you. Yeah, sorry...I usually film them this way. I'll try and get back to landscape for future videos. 😊

Sadly missed the most fascinating things there. There are interesting gravestones including one to a man who, in the 1850's left the village and went to Australia then later on to Moscow before ending up in Bury!

Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately it was a spur of the moment visit as my plans had changed so I was a bit unprepared. I may do a revisit sometime. He sounds like a great character 😊

That gentleman, Jared Priestley, was my great great grandfather on my mother's side. He also had a son, Edward, who was born in Russia and was my great grandfather.

@@ricktick64 Interesting, you know BBC Radio 4 did a a piece on him about 15 years ago. Where they examined his life, where he'd been and why.

@@ChrisJones-rw1mf hi. No I wasn't aware of that. It'd be really interesting to find that. I know he went to Russia to work in the mills, following his brother out there.
