Like the rest of the country who watched his television documentaries, I was fascinated. One day I was driving home from Blackpool after an offshore crewchange and diverted to Bolton to look for him. I found him in the phone book, no internet then. There he was knocking rust off a pair of iron gates with a Warrington hammer. Fred welcomed me, made a brew and made time for a yarn and showed me his workshop. Only met him that one time but I'll never forget him. I thought I would crack when I saw his cap on the coffin, but I finally cracked at the steam whistle salute. Dusty in here, is it? RIP to a proper English gentleman and outstanding craftsman.
I am a roofer which is a tough job. We respect toughness. I’m a millennial but I grew up admiring and associating w Gen X and im tougher for it. This guy is a whole universe removed from us on the toughness scale. He’s become one of my hero’s since I discovered him.
People who say they have tough jobs don't actually have tough jobs Roofing is about as basic as it gets if you think because the Sun is glaring on you all day maybe you should get a hat and some bottles of water😂 Farm agriculture that's a tough job What you do is something anybody with a high school diploma or not a high school diploma could do😂 Where can I McDonald's is a tougher jobGet over yourself roofy butt😂
I grew up with Fred on the telly and have just been re-watching it all again. I have to admit that I shed a tear watching this one!! I would have loved to have met him.
A hard working, working class man who was love by many from all over our country. He will never be forgotten. Fred was one of the very few that made this country great.
Watching this from the USA in 2024, first saw Fred’s videos a few years back . I am in deep reflection this morning in admiring this man. A common man’s Lord. If determination and bravery and kindness were the qualifications or requirements of a King, Fred would be known as one. The depth of this man’s soul is defined here by the turnout of people . A solemn moment. God Bless his family.
What a great post 👍 I'm glad you enjoyed our National Treasure 😊 As a Scot I think I can safely say he was the most popular Englishman in Scotland ever 😁 🇺🇲🏴🇬🇧
I only found out about Fred on here last week at about 3am by acciddent. What a MAN. I have huge respect for him and that tractor that was pulling possibly the biggest pair of iron balls any man has ever had. RIP Fred
What a pleasure to this world! 1 in million! I'm a 36 yr old man now young in this world today watching the true talented man that he was! Respect to Bolton
Don't be so sure. There where characters before him and there will be more after. That is the nature of this country. But at the same time, just as we've a list of Kings, so we have a list of People, and Fred was a King among them.
How can it be that I've just found out about this marvelous MAN I've only known him for a few days now and here I am 43 years old and shedding a tear for someone I never met why is this man's story not known he should be crazy famous world wide I've told everyone I no about him
Had the great honour of meeting Fred, purely by chance in a motorway service station. And bought Him a packet of Polo's, He didn't have any money on Him ! A Gent, Englishman and true icon.
Fred Dibnah - A Final Goodbye: The Day Bolton Stood Still Much much more that that. I am confident the story of Fred Dibnah will be re-visited for many generations. Redefines inspirational.
I am not easily touched, and I have learned about Fred Dibnah only a few days ago and consumed all episodes and videos I could find. Finally this one and I was seriously moved. What a bloke this man must have been. One of a few. He certainly has a place in my heart now too. Nicely done film. Thanks for sharing.
Blimey its been 19 years since Fred passed. What a great character he was ,im a southerner but i totally understood fred and his passion for steam engines and his work ethic from his home town of Bolton .. Good lad fred
Rip Fred…..you may have gone, but we have you on film to view time and time again and learn about days gone past and renew interests and passion for the traction engines.Very sadly missed even today 2023! 🙏❤️🏴peace for you and best wishes to All your family.❤️👏🙏👍🍻🎉 Many thanks for posting….well edited and put together - perfect …just as Fred would say,”do you like that?”👏👏👏
I never knew this existed, I would of watched it ages ago. R.I.P. Fred 💙. 1 in a million, not many can touch the hearts of the common people, you did in every way. I can't believe it's been nearly 19 years. God bless 🙌 🙏 ❤️
A friend in my Gym mentioned Fred a month or two past... I've watched about all of his endeavours... Stumbled across this this night. What a brilliant man. This is a hard watch, lump in throat. Thank you Fred and everyone for sharing his life.
You can dangle from the top of a 200ft chimney & defy death every day like Fred often did. In the end time gets you & time will come for us all in the end. What a great man Fred was & so were many of his generation. If only we could turn back the clock & thank each & every one of them. RIP Fred.
I remember seeing Fred on the TV when I was young he came across as a very knowledgeable warm family man they don't make men like him anymore now.😢 I just came across this on here..God bless you Fred...
Watching this almost twenty years after his passing and it still brings a lump to my throat. I'm at the same age as Fred was at his passing and seeing this wonderful tribute causes me to reflect upon my life and mans mortality in general.
What a wonderful farewell to a much loved man. That is Britain at it's best, showing such love and respect to one great personality. God bless you,Fred,..rest in peace.
How many blokes do you know built a coal mine in there back garden. What a guy. Inspiring hard working individual that deserves all the respect in the world.
What a great man a typical tough old northerner great nut and bolts engineer they will never make men like Fred again 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👏👏👏👏 he kept us on the edge of our seats there man had No nerves. My who is in his 30s cannot believe Fred’s exploits Rip Fred my son from London 🇬🇧
How did Fred Dibnah become famous? The fact that he found fame for felling the chimneys he had trained to save was an irony not lost on him. From there, Fred went on to become a regular on BBC TV, taking part in many programmes and, more often than not, extolling his love of the Industrial Age.
A true gentleman and a credit to great 🇬🇧' if only we could turn back time. Fred's generation was truly Inspirational' when ever I'm feeling down I always watch Fred's episodes on you tube and it makes me realise that we are the lucky ones due to Fred's generation pathing a path for our generation. Unfortunately most young people that have never seen him on tv will never realize that he was a brilliant man with no airs and grasses he treats everyone the same If his series came out again on tv I'm sure it would be just as popular
As an expatriate I was not aware of Fred's rise to national fame until a couple of years ago, I came on the original documentary series of when he was still relatively young, felling local chimney stacks with his tried and tested fire-in-the-hole methods. A remarkable English working man.
Fred was a wonderful man. His 3rd wife, Sheila wasn't a very nice person. She caused a lot of ill feeling by being against Fred's steam and mining friends. She really thought she was someone but was nothing but a two bit snob looking down on them. I felt rather sorry for Fred having to deal with her.
@@theculturedthug6609 Fred saw her as his 'dollybird', but she was just an old hag trying to still look like the 'showgirl' she had once been with that ridiculous long hair.
You can’t not love Fred an absolute legend, the sheer balls of the man, cut from a different cloth, I’d say rest in peace but we know he’s tinkering with a boiler somewhere 😂😂
Was sent a video of him years ago scaling the side of a huge chimney my love only grew. A honest working man would've loved to sit down for a brew with Fred ☕️ god bless ❤🍻
Dear Fred rest in peace for eternity. A true English man of immense character. I still have fear when I watch you climbed those ladders hundreds of feet in the air stopping half way up for a rest with a leg hooked around a rung of the ladder admiring the view. Fred your englishness reminds me of my late grandfather who was a docker on the Manchester Ship canal . You are missed by many.

Fred is best known for his steeple-jacking, but he was an incredible artist and craftsman. His stone and wood sculptures were beautiful and his architectural drawings were like renaissance pieces. Not to mention his steel and brass engineering talents.
What a great tribute to a true legend. He will always be remembered.
It had me going 😢😢 from start too finish 🙏❤️🇬🇧💕🙏❤️🇬🇧💕🥲
No he won't
Just a lowly Blue collar worker but being honored like a nobleman and statesman
He was worth a hundred of any of them . Nothing lowly about Fred. He was a great man

There is a statue in Bolton I think
There is a statue of Fred stood in front of a steam engine exhibit at an entrance to Bolton Town Hall Square.
